Casio A168WA-1YES Display, Nato Strap and NFC Mod

- This one is my favourite Casio modification so far. Never been a fan of nato straps especially on Casio watches but I think it's growing on me. Black nato strap goes nicely with stainless steel looking Casio A168WA-1YES body in which I managed to fit an NFC chip that's slim enough to sit comfortably under the LCD. To anyone who's about to comment "iTs uNrEAdaBlE" - please see a doctor (eye or/and brain) and comment your condition in the comment section. Inverted display is perfectly readable just like a normal display. Also, super happy about how backlight looks, electro luminescence is cool. This watch is really easy to work with and mod, you can easily try it yourself with minimal tools. Thank you for watching.

Being one-offs, it depends on person to person. If i really like that watch, I could pay even the double the price of the stock one.
I got this watch at Walmart for about 10 bucks,great buy 100% would buy again (that is if I have to)

I have no clue what happened during the video. I understood the polarization of the film allowed for a negative display and the strap replacement part, but other than that, I just enjoyed watching you tinker.

5:30 - You have to install *Gold Spring First* then The _white face_! Spring won't come out because spring has 2 different size ends. Small part goes first and Big part stops it from coming out.
Also when I installed nfc tag inside my watch face! There's a *SILVER SPRING* stays with battery dropped, and couldn't figure out where silver *Spring* came out from! It's for alarm btw. If you lose, it won't make noise!
Watched video by @JUnbox _A168 Battery replacement_ that helped with putting the SILVER SPRING in place.

I usually use polarizing films from an old cell phones. This time I used the one I got on ebay which is meant to be used for samsung smartphone screen. There's loads on ebay and they all do the same thing.

I just got a 1.2mm thick nato for my a168w but it's too tight with the original shoulderless spring bars. I'm thinking of buying thinner spring bars, either 1.2mm or maybe even 1mm diameter. What kind of spring bars did you use for you watch? Thanks in advance.
Hi, yes you need a thinner spring bars. I bought a set of different size springbars so it wasn't a problem for me to find a thin one. You can also try ironing your strap, but be careful not to burn it.
Beg you pardon for my ignorance, but what's the NFC for? It's the same "NFC" of mobile connectivity?What's its usability in this type of device?
You can store some information in it. Text, links, contacts etc. My favorite is that you can program it to connect your phone to selected wifi just by taping your phone.
I'm sorry but I don't seem to understand what you did to make the LCD inverted, you removed a polarising filter and replaced it with a different kind? How can I find such a filter?
The EL still looks good even with negative display. I didn't think it would, but cool!
What is the NFC for? I really don't know much about it other than my phone has it and I use it with Samsung pay if the card reader has the touch pad up top. What does it do on your watch?

At first i thought you placed two polarizers and then after watching it a few times, I realized you placed the new one underneath the old and peeled the old one off after you stuck the new one on the screen. Did i get that right? 😅 Also, you mentioned in one of the comments that it should be 45 deg for better contrast? How do you determine "better contrast?" And 45 deg in relation to what exactly?😅 Sorry if I have too many questions. I just bought a A168WA-1WDF and really want to do this mod. I think the blue green light is just beautiful. 🙂

Hey, I love answering questions. Now here's what I did. If I remember correctly I peeled the old polarizer and placed it on a new sheet so I can cut it precisely. New polariser comes with protective film on both sides so there's a lot of peeling. Really I just replaced a polariser film and that's all you need to know haha.. To get the best contrast just assemble the module without polariser and test it with the new one at different angles... 45° in the relation of an edge of polarise film.

Because i searched online locally and i got a 0 deg polarizer, a 90 deg polarizer, polarized light, and polarized light 0 and 90 degrees. Now that made me confused lol. Can i just use any? 😁😁

Thanks! I used some thinner spring bars that I had laying around. Also, ironing your strap helps but be careful it burns real fast.

How do like putting the NFC chip behind the LCD? I would assume little interference being mostly just glass.
If I put it behind the glass then the backlight would be a bit sketchy. I would do that on other watches that are not backlit tho. But it works perfectly well, better than I expected.

70% Rubbing alcohol. You can, the stronger the better.

I barely care about watches. I'm just so happy to have a channel to watch when high.
Casio is not taking it seriously where as we all classic lovers think about it so much.
Imagine Casio releasing digital square models in pure quality steel models with LED display. People will mad to purchase. But No they are chilling and happy with the tiny plastic dials tied with low quality chains. Yes the price is less though.

You have to buy one. It's called polarizer film. The one I removed is the same one, you just need to flip it at different angle to get negative color display.

Beautiful! Managed to pull off the negative LED, looks amazing. I can't get NATO strap to fit though! Been trying for the last 45 minutes and scratched the lugs to hell but seems impossible. Is there a trick?
The trick is to use thiner spring bars and bend the strap before putting it in.

Hi, I'm working on making it fully black. To make custom writings would require some expensive equipment like flatbed printer.

Hey, brown leather might look good but there's a lot of gray area in there. I would go with the black strap, you can't go wrong with that.

It's called polarizer film, I buy them on ebay, search for Gameboy Polariser, they are self adhesive. If you don't want all the mess applying it yourself, I will have ready to use negative displays on my etsy store some time next week.

Yes, 8:42 show how the light looks, also firs few seconds of the video is how it looks with the light on in the dark.
for future projects please consider some sort of diy adapter for larger than 18mm nato straps. there are plenty of big casios that look odd on a 18mm nato..

Hi mate. Lovely stuff. Just a question? How can you have the light on all the time? And how can you get a blacker " black" backgroung, that doen't get blueish from the backlight? Is that even possible with an LCD? Is there any posibility to use some sort of OLED display, to have a better display. Also, do you know anyone who would machine and anodize a case? Thank you.
Does NFC really work? Because of the metal lid at back, wouldn't it cover the signals?
It works through the display.
Is the case steel? Amazon lists this watch as having a steel case, but it looks more like the plastic that casio uses on other watches.

No, the case is the usual chrome plated plastic.
I don't know what he uses NFC for, or just put it in because it fit, but some public transit networks allow you to bind an NFC tag to your personal prepaid account and then you can use it to pay for your commute. You can also have phone unlock or application invoke by NFC tag.

I used thinner spring bars and bent the strap in the places were spring bars touch.
There are some watches that have a positive LCD but still light up only the numbers when you activate the EL backlight as a negative display does. Any idea how this can be done?
