I love these historical perspectives on the game's lack of realism

Well, considering paradox putting a 2018 Brazilian elections meme as a Path for communist Brazil, this anachronism of Theology of Libertation is fine

Poland's flag if they go down the peasant republic is the icon of the Black Madonna, or Our Lady of Czestochowa.

I think its just some alternate formations of it, kinda like in Victoria 2 its possible for Communism to be made be someone else somewhere else at some other time.

Seems like the liberation theology anachronism is probably the result of Paradox going more in a direction of creating larpy paths (personally I don't enjoy them in vanilla, KX is usually my go-to for real larp; but if people want larp, let them have larp), which although they always have made such paths, it seems more prevalent now in newer DLCs. I honestly don't know if it's a result of poor and rushed research on Paradox part or simply them just trying to offer interesting paths to players.
I personally don't agree with liberation theology, but I could see myself doing some weird Christosocialist larp just for fun, though it would feel very weird in a historical WW2 context. If there's ever some redux Cold War mod, a liberation theology path would fit right in

come to think of it, I'd really enjoy hearing more about some of hoi's religious references ala russia's patriarch aligning towards the soviets during barb.

If you bothered to do some research you would find the pretty logical reason behind this. Liberation Theology arose in Latin America in the 1860s, gaining popularity in the 1970s. While this is nowhere near the early 1940s, you can trace the ideals of Liberation Theology to that time or even earlier. The ideas are even independent of the guy who made it in this time, as Christian socialism dates back to the Church Fathers Age. Christian Communism even predates Marxism, at least in practice, with the Diggers and the Munster Rebellion. Is it possible that if Brazil or Argentina had enough popular support to turn communist that it would then accelerate the formation of these ideas especially when sponsored by a new and weak government (As they tend to center around key identities such as religion)? Yes. Is it also highly likely that Paradox wanted to appeal to the somewhat decent number of Christian socialists and communists around the world and their happened to be a term that came from the region and it wasn't super anachronistic (Especially when this is in context to an alternate history path where Brazil or Argentina becomes communist) so they used it as the name of the focus? Yes.
This isn't a story of lazy Paradox, they actually took the time to figure out a name for a Christian Socialist ideology to name one focus. Its an alternate history path and your complaining about anachronism, just enjoy the game. If you were that upset by this, then become an advocate for educational reform in the US and other countries like Japan. Its far worse than this and it actually matters.

Christian Communism or Communalism doesn't have anything to do with the concept of "Liberation theology" not existing yet. Yes, there have been economically leftist forms of Christian practice in the past.
No, they are not all Liberation Theology.
The similarities don't mean you get to oversimplify things and make anachronistic comparisons for the time.
Plus, even if the ideology was rushed into existence sooner than in our own timeline, the books which inspired the people who made the ideology do not exist yet. The ideas which shaped the theory's founders do not yet exist and are not likely to be invented without a hardship experienced and processed. It won't have the DNA which makes it the ideology that exists in our timeline, it'll be something irreconcilably different even if it is similar.

That's a pretty reasonable take. I don't know nearly enough about this topic to say anything concrete, but it seems at least theoretically possible that if there was a successful socialist revolution in a latin american country there might be some intermingling of Christian and socialist elements. I think it's likely an anachronistic title for an alternate history development.

I’d be very interested in seeing you go more into these historical fallacies in HOI4. I know your studies are probably pretty focused so can’t encapsulate too much, but it’s interesting to hear you talk about one specific focus and how’s it’s straight up false

In Asturias there were (and are some) red pastors ("curas rojos"), they were very known in the civil war and 1934 revolution. Asturias is a left-wing region but also a very religious region, so it makes sense they would appear. There are still some, like the current mayor of Langreo is a pastor and he's from the far-left IU party.
My family has various stories from the civil war, in my town the pastor was a red pastor and when some anarchist groups that had came from Cantabria tried to burn the church and kill the pastor people, some of who were republican soldiers, defended him and the church, getting the cross and other relics out of the church to safety. The church did sadly burn down but it was rebuilt in 1945 with the same relics that the people had saved.

Anachronism should be the name of that DLC, like you can make a faction called Mercosul (makes ZERO sense at all) as this the integralist path has focus about "crushing the cosmopolitans" as the AIB was actually the most equal in ethnics regards, Plinio Salgado said: "Brazil's problem is ethical not ethnical", It had black members from the African religions and they supported adopting Tupi (indigenous language) as cooficial. also making Brasilia that early/ having Vargas as a democratic really hurts me as a brazilian
