My dad still laughs at when Moe breaks character & starts talking with present-day vocabulary around 4:28-4:34. As a kid, I never thought about that & it wasn't until I got a little bit older when I finally caught wind of it & asked him about it.
When I used to watch this as a kid in the Sixties I didn't get the cultural references. The two racehorses mentioned, _Whopper_ and _Rosemont_ were two actual thoroughbreds. The latter was most famous for defeating the popular horse _Seabiscuit_ in 1937. Also Larry's reference to being in the "WPA" which he says stands for *Willing Pilgrims Association* but audiences at the time would know those initials stood for The *Works Progress Administration* a New Deal program under Roosevelt. The WPA supplied paid jobs to the unemployed during the Great Depression in the United States, while building up the public infrastructure of the US, such as parks, schools, and roads. Most of the jobs were in construction, building more than 620,000 miles (1,000,000 km) of streets and over 10,000 bridges, in addition to many airports and much housing. New York's LaGuardia Airport is a WPA project that's still around. Also part of the WPA was a grant for Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater to put on plays
@@Fabadaba You're welcome. The boys only made a few contemporary references but sometimes they were the source of jokes so I try to look them up. Just another Stooge Fan. I used to watch them on the Officer Joe Bolton show.
The first Stooges short to re-use old footage; the canoe scene at the end is from Whoops, I'm an Indian! (1936), which was why they changed clothes before boarding the canoe (to match the footage - "On with the disguises!"). The tune when they drop balls connected to their chains is the NBC theme. The music box tune that the Stooges and female Pilgrims dance to is Beethoven's Minuet in G Major, WoO 10, No. 2. Larry's (Larry Fine) reference to the WPA would have been familiar to audiences in 1937 as the federal government had established a "Works Progress Administration" to hire millions of job seekers to carry out public work projects during the economic Great Depression of the 1930s. The firearms the Stooges are carrying when they arrive in the American colonies are exaggerated versions of a "blunderbuss". This firearm functioned like a shotgun, with the gun shooting a load of projectiles that spread out upon leaving the barrel. The story has no ending. The Stooges escape with their lives, but they leave the situation worse for the starving colonists, with the natives worked up, openly hostile, and thirsting for revenge.

Judge: Ye are accused of doing battle with his Majesty's guards. What say ye to the charge? Larry: I can explain, judge. You see-eth, it was like this-eth... Judge: Guilty! I sentence ye to Newcape Prison for 40 years! Ye to 45! Ye to 50! Larry: 40? Moe: 45? Curly: 50? I got 50. 50. 50, 50, 50, 50, do I hear 55, do I hear 55? Going once, twice, do I hear 55? Nyuk nyuk nyuk nyuk nyuk!
Much like with Whoops, I'm An Indian!, Back To The Woods would not be deemed politically correct these days, and I can imagine it being more controversial than the former due to it's depiction of Native Americans. All that is completely understandable, but I actually really like this short. The opening scene with the trio's trial is humorous, and it's interesting how their sentence is chosen. I can imagine some finding that the dancing scene goes on for too long, but I find it to be just the right length, and it's funny how it ends so abruptly. Many enjoyable gags follow, making for an enjoyable experience. I don't really have an issue with stock footage being used at the end, as it's minimal, and they added a different sound effect anyway. It's a short I really enjoyed back in the day and still do to this day. Where it ranks for me: #13
Honestly not a fan of the period piece shorts, but when they clocked that one guy with the flying rock from the tree branch slingshot I laughed out loud. So sudden.

If the present politicians were in charge of infrastructure in those days, the only roads we'd have today would be dirt with wooden bridges.
If the Thuglicans were in charge they would be private only for the wealthy

Beethoven's Minuet in G Major would be anachronistic by about a century.
