As an estp, the biggest change to my life was actually finding my type. Nobody can improve or work on their own weaknesses without somebody to point them out. Poking my head out of the estp matrix and exploring what's out there was a life changer for me on a maturity level.

Superficially, as a philosophy program graduate with next to no interest in athletics, ESTP was just about the last type I ever considered. Now, after years of reflection, and going by some of your pieces, including this one and the one on oppositional functions, I'm starting to think I might very well be an ESTP.

Is there any advice that you'd give to parents of a young ESTP (well I think my son is either an ESTP or ENTP; definitely Fe convergent & Ti authority)? As an ENFJ cousin re the ESTP I think we sometimes operate on a similar wavelength but other people can misconstrue his intentions, especially adults as he's a 'social pro' for his age & his Ni-Ti frameworks. I do feel like Ni-Ti/Ti-Ni as Harry said can be difficult to communicate...he's such a bright boy & we want the best for him, like most parents do 😊

@@AnyaAnnika67 Learn how to communicate clearly, and justify your reasons behind certain things, for example NEVER say "Because I said so." but rather give reasons for why you need them to do what you need them to do. Be very open and receptive and forgiving about things, and they'll be honest with you. If you're extremely strict, they're going to break the rules anyway, and they just won't tell you and can get themselves into trouble. Treat them not so much as a kid, but as a normal human who you can explain things to, once they're older than 8 years or so. All of this would've saved me and my parents quite the headache when I was younger. They were strict, so I rebelled, and I was extremely good at hiding things because I needed to.

I feel like he's misconstrued a lot of the time & due to him being a 'social pro' ie socially advanced for his age I often think people forget how young he actually is. Maybe I'm just a parent over worrying 😊. He's exceptionally bright & needs a lot of stimulation to keep his brain ticking over...it's tiring work! Estp, your NiTi Section just taught me why I feel a certain disconnect with myself and everyone else. Having to translate internally before translating again externally often loses the essence of what I even started with. So much data and life experience is tied below the surface of niti matrix things just come out so wrong but when leaning on it without explanation I always do come out on top. Thank you so much for this! I've been contemplating whether I type as an ESTP. Most of the sources I'm reading are very stereotypical. I've watched other videos with explanations I could relate to, but it felt like they were trying to jam it down my throat. It's irritating, makes you question the intentions of these sources.

*Putting this down for personal research.
5 Signs You're Actually An ESTP
    Sign. 1: SeFe Dominance
You engage with external reality in an intense manner.
The wat you engage socially is precise and often fast-paced.
    Sign. 2: Fe Novelty
You are easily bored in social situations, enacting novelty in order to 'liven things up' and socialising more to get stimulation for the sake of communal belonging.
    Sign. 3: Holistic Logic
You think more in terms of logical shapes and 'common tones', in a more musical manner based on frequences.
Your logiccal process is non-sequential, often hard to put into words, sometimes causing you to keep it to yourself lest you be misunderstood.
    Sign. 4: NiTi Matrix
You navigate life probabilistically, turning chaos into opportunity.
You double-down on a signle model of reality, illuminating any loop holes it contains.
    Sign. 5: The Ti Authority
You tend to take up the mantle of the protection and preservation of truth and logic.
Your pressure points tend to be around logical inconsistency, hypocrisy, and thoughtlessness.
    Also,
That “…moody, withdrawn, and cynical. Those would be many of the ESTP’s in this community typing themselves as INTPs for some strange reason.” got me.
I'm constantly typed as INTP when I do those online tests - perhaps it's that Ti Dominance?
So far, I've hopped around being: ENTJ, ISTP, ISTJ, ISFP, and now: ESTP. Idk how I ended seeing myself in all those types. It's just that every time I do some introspection in reference to those types, I end up being left with more questions than answers.
Still trying to understand the NiFi blindspot. Not gonna lie, as much as I like nerding out like this, I feel like my brain is getting fried. 😵‍💫

Society, neglectful parents, and bullying suppressed my extroversion right out of me. I do exercise a lot now, play music and outdoors hobbies, but social situations with people I'm not close to is always a struggle. I guess mental illness and trauma just won't allow my Fe to work, or maybe that feeds it. I still am the life of the party with my close friends and there is no anxiety there. But random aquantencies or strangers, forget it. I freeze in that scenario and don't say a word. It sucks.

I'm currently in the process of typing myself and had considerations of me being ENFJ, ISFP and ISTP. After this video however, I feel like ESTP might be added on the list of possible types. I figured out my Se-Ni/Ni-Se axis for sure, what I struggle with is my codec axis. The thing you mentioned about turning chaos into opportunity really clicked with me. I often find myself improvising at school while, for example, writing an essay (I'm a 15 year old who got really into psychology and discovering myself) in the present moment, while being informed by a general, abstract framework of reality and society.
I was a fan of your content for a year at this point and loved it all the way so far, even got the CPT e-book, which is helping me to understand the Fi-Fe dominance difference (I'm pretty sure I'm Fe/Fi convergent, however, I related to what you said about ISTPs) I just want to thank you for the content you create and the things you helped me realize about personality and cognition! Take care!

Have you checked out IDR labs? Honestly I don't think typing yourself at such a young age is very accurate or useful tbh. Your personality isn't even developed or experienced enough to be apparent until around the same time your neuroplasticity crystalizes, which is around 24-26. And trust me you will notice when that time comes, the intergration/formation makes you feel, kinda old and self aware. For now I really do believe that sort of self analysis will just hinder the joys and benefits of being young and free.
P.S I think I know your type :) Feel free to take my unsolicited opinion/advice with a grain of salt like you I find this stuff extremely interesting.

@@Dizmal0ne About the typing, I would say that it helped me understand that I have a passion for people and psychology, and that I have an intense interest in personality. While having other interests like gaming and drawing, this one fulfills the analytical part of me. However in the last months I was slowly moving away from having a strong attachment to it. I felt like I was putting too much of my identity into a type and decided to attempt to treat it in a less attached manner. (btw sounds like something ISFPs with their FiNi would say) Even though I disagree with your point of this self analysis hindering the joys of being young (actually its one of the things keeping me going), I really do respect your opinion and think that I should actually take some notes from it. I'm definitely planning to revisit this interest for self-exploration at the age you adviced me to! I too refer to an ESTP that I know as chaotic and he refers to himself as an agent of chaos. Very spot on description that I have seen from my INFJ lens. They're very adept at knowing who they can be punchy and or jokey with, who might need to be brought back into the social atmosphere (the loners), and I have experienced them sometimes going to others to verify information for their Ti at times. They feel like sandpaper but they're great at smoothing out the jagged parts in others or pointing out areas where others could benefit from going with their own chaos, rather than perpetually resisting it. A thoughtful type indeed.

I think the thoughtfulness of the type can get over looked a lot of the time; we vibe in our holistic logical thinking. I sometimes think he's been dealt a harsh hand as he's socially advanced for his age probably, in part, owing to his Se-Fe & his teachers forget that he's much younger than he actually is...he's still running rings around everyone though 😂

It is very attuned to the external, as you said frequently chaotic, reality that Se dominants users wish to exert their will upon and restrain its messy effects by "forcing" the untidiness into state of a total submission. From the outside, it is a force to be reckoned with and its essence can be incredibly intimidating and intense.

"mistakes are okay as long as they make sense given the availability of information" I find this funny as just today I was reflecting on why I don't find some kinds of Si/Ne jokes or limericks funny at all and I realized this happens if I know the people making them know they're not true, they don't extend reality, they are not a twist on reality, they are plain false affirmations, should any false affirmation be considered funny now because it's not true or..
anyway, thank you so much for this video, I was looking forward to it, truly insightful, and, in true probabilistic fashion, I won't lock in on my type yet, I am still pondering over ESTP/ENFJ, although I identified with all the points, it's a bit uncanny really. thanks!

I always self typed as ENTP but OPS typed me as ESTP which makes much more sense. The stereotype that Se first is some sort of skateboarding / mountain climber never fit me for and I always assumed my logical / intuitive bent came from Ne.
The shadow Fi is a difficult one. The feeling is of not having a sufficiently developed identity, and inability to align completely to different groups and perspectives. We can find the good and bad in each one without becoming a zealot of any path. The flip side is sometimes becoming a zealot is important for the long term investment in an identity or project without which the ESTP will lose interest.
As I’ve grown in my type Fi has also become more sensitive and I feel myself valuing the softer side of life more than I did when I was younger. It was certainly the key to development and become a well rounded person. It also smooths out the rough edges of an otherwise highly weaponised mind that can concurrently build intuitive models and slice up logical fallacies.

One year later and I'd enjoy a Matrix video. Sometimes, I can almost see a very thin line between fabricated reality and what exists all around us. My head feels clear when I get out in nature, and I understand the traps society sets to distract us. Anyway it's hard to fully explain what I mean, but I think you can follow my thoughts. When you explained why we mistype as INTP, that was very validating. Thank you!

Absolutely. I thought the ESTP was an unthinking type, similar to wild animal, focused on getting approval via physical achievements or presence. Now I understand, my disagreeable, boring, analytic, and self destructive nature doesn't contradict at all the basis of the type!
i read about a concept the other day, 'antagonistic Pleiotropy', and I thought 'damn, that's why estps are so uncommon, they have the social skills of a woman, and are more likely to reproduce for that reason, but their descendants tend to be XNFJs'.

Fantastic video as always. I am quite certain I am an ENF-T but I relate to a lot of this... only in certain situations, though. You've mentioned before how the ENF-T can use SeFe in certain scenarios which I relate to often. Yet I wonder how it differs from ESF-T's SeFe? The only way I could discern myself from this video was because I am certain I use way more NiFi than SiFi, but still it's always good to have clarification.
Could a possible "ESTP vs ENTP" video be on its way? Love your content, Harry!

    • @CognitivePersonality

SeFe gateway tends to be fast and reactive, and has a harder quality to it. NeFe by contrast, regardless of Se dip, is very intentional and works more deterministically (like a music conductor) to shape the social landscape.
SiTi logic is a lot more algorithmic and computational than NiTi also!

Love the spray paint analogy! Like some other people, for me that was great timing as well since I have recently worked with it. So, I can relate both metaphorically and physically :)
I suspect myself to be an ENFP, yet I wonder how I can see myself in those descriptions. I'm not sure if you remember but I had asked you a few times how I can develop my Fe. After some time it just developed on its own and now I see too much haha. But I like it more than when I didn't!
Specifically, I find myself predicting how certain social things could affect certain people and how any given room can feel by me saying something. That seems weird because if I'm an ENFP, I should be an intuitive thinker, not feeler.
Is this possible for an ENFP?
I also find myself relating more and more to INFJs just as much, if not, more than I relate to the ESTP. When will the ENFP subtypes video come out, if I may ask? I suspect that I may be an ambivert.
I understand that you have a life outside RUclips but I would love to have a conversation with you. I can imagine that we would have a conversation I can't have with most people.

My husband of 16 years is a FANTASTIC, confident, charismatic and sweet, ENTP! He is seen as argumentative and righteous and a go getter, who started his own successful business. He doesn’t care what people think about him and says what he means and what he thinks. His brutal honesty but deeply caring and moralistic nature is what I admire the most. I have never really seen him rattled or look nervous.
I am an overly emotional, spoilt, dreamy, moralistic, flighty and deeply thoughtful ENFP! I think it is touted that our personality match is not a great mix, but we work fantastically! We are each others ying to our yang! I liken him to Donald Trump, with a wink wink! And me to Kate Bush! Extra wink wink! An underrated dream team - very different, but quite the same in our convictions.

You know, Harry. I've been coming up with a theory related to statistics and personality for a while now, and why there are so many misstypes in this community.
And it has to do with a specific question: is it valid to believe that convergent thinkers like INTP and ENTJ move away from MBTI due to lack of creative freedom to conjecture? Considering a community capable of lynching those who don't follow the rules of Jung and Myers-Briggs, mainly.
What do you think of this?

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  Год назад +2

INTPs can be a mixed back there as they often also seek to preserve knowledge, but I have found ENTJs and INFJs have a greater tendency to form their own 'takes', so would fit your hypothesis more than the Ti dominants.

Little regard for ... social exchange. .. etc. That's one of the things that kept throwing me off. I would think I sound "just like" this type except ... and the except was either that they loved small talk and talking about feelings all day long or they hated it. And, hate it if it is all day long or without reason- the gooshy "We need to talk" sort of talks, that is - but I love the sort of talk where you meet up with friends at a diner or just kick back and chill at home, or , go out dancing or whatever. But, I also need the deeper stuff. Not the gooshier, more overly sensitive stuff. No. Just leave my life if you are going to not give me a logical reason or simply say "I don't know. I felt mad so I acted like a jerk." Because, my goodness, everybody has themselves some trauma or angst. Let's have pizza and beer, and talk about them, instead.Though, not for around a year from now.

I spent the majority of my life thinking I do not get bored, because, well, I do not get bored in the way that most people I know get bored when they say "I am so bored." which is usually folllowed by or entirely expressed as "There is nothing to do." Generally, there is always something to do- think, sing, feel, paint, write, exercise, work, something.
But, recently, I remembered a few times when I just couldn't take it anymore, and I was bored, bored, bored ... not because there was nothing to do but because life was being so staid and predictable, and nothing was a surprise. No one was doing or saying anything that was not to be expected of them. Criminals committing crime in the usual way, reporters reporting the same, the police saying the same things to the criminals and slapping on the same handcuffs. People walking down the street, observing and making the same comments about the same things, wearing the same sort of clothes and makeup as usual and relieving their own boredom in the same conformist manner they always had.
One time, I did something that was energetically criminal and dexterous, to the point that the observing police officer simply said he would report it all in some other way altogether as he didn't know how to write it up. And, thusly was everyone's boredom relieved for a small time.
Weirdly, no one ever mentioned it to me again. None of the people I was walking with, no one in my family was ever told - unless, maybe I told them, later, and it was one of the things they had decided I was either lying about or insane for thinking happened- and no one whose property sustained damage ever complained or sought recompense.
I was treated somewhat more deferentially by some people and challenged more by others. Which was, more or less, the same way things always go.
