@Gus Erland the wires inside are actually thinner tho, mostly different quality ("purity") of copper. The real difference between cat5e and cat6a for example is the better alien crosstalk, allowing the frequency to go up to 500MHz as opposed to 250MHz on Cat6 and and 100MHz on Cat5e
@Gus Erland Ah yes, I'm totally clueless. That's why I am taking my network engineering exam next month? :^) Let's grab the book shall we? - Operate at 500MHz instead of 250MHz of Cat5 or 100MHz of Cat5e - higher purity copper, resulting in less losses over distance - same AWG wires as cat6, ever so slightly thicker wires than cat5e (I guess you're right here) - tighter twists - a "plastic piece" in the middle to limit crosstalk - thicker insulation around each wire There you have it, the both of us were right. Happy now?
CAT6A Has a tighter twist in the pairs allowing for high freg, the divider helps with emi. also should of used CAT6A keystone jacks and CAT6A stranded patch cords be a little more bicsi standard.

And they wouldnt let me run my own fiber and cable, I HAD to pay them :(.... I ran my fiber lines after closing... This was a production builder in a very high end community... No need for more expensive electrical power rated conduit either. Low cost flexible or hard pvc pipe can solve many issues! I have TWO 32mm runs through my stud walls currently, one flexible for hidden TV cables (DC power, AC Mains), HDMI, , etc and the other one is a straight drop 40mm pvc drain pipe for running Ethernet cables down to the ground floor void under the suspended floor from the upstairs floor void. Left it with a draw cord to make adding cables a piece of proverbial. Soon there will be another 20 conduit runs including 2x32mm, the rest 20mm for a complete lighting automation system. All light controls will be 5v ONLY, with NO mains in the walls except for wall lamps. All mains connections to lamps will be via opto isolated relays from one control box. LOTS of mains cable conduit used too, to ease replacement of existing mains runs with orange ZHLS Cat5e control cabling. All power cabling then via conduit to the above ceiling voids upstairs and downstairs. MUCH, MUCH easier for upgrading later as/when needed for 10G or even fibre in the future!

pro cabling tip, you dont need a screwdriver or anything to straighten them out (this is gonna be crazy hard to explain in text, but here goes..) 1) untwist them 2) line them up in the right order 3) firmly hold them together (while keeping them flat) at two different points ~1/2 an inch apart 4) wiggle those 2 points back and forth on a 2 dimensional plane, the wires will straighten *much* more. 5) snip off the un-straightened part

In ip>firewall>nat you can make ports rules also in connections you will see all connections in and out to your network. Make in firewall filter rules flood protect rule for make your sarvers saver. In ip>dhcp server>leases you can easly make static adresses rules, also you can see there alerts. An Asus XG-C100C user here. A while back an AQC107 firmware update, atlflashupdate_1.4.2_3.1.90.zip was available for download from Aquantia's site. So I used it (via Windows 10 1903) to update my XG-C100C's firmware from ver. 1.5.44 to ver. 3.1.90 in order to successfully remedy an infrequent and intermittent dropped network connection issue. I then repeated said update with equal success on another XG-C100C I had bought as a backup. Shortly afterwards atlflashupdate_1.4.2_3.1.90.zip was removed from Aquantia's site. I sent them an e-mail asking why. Their response was noncommittal. (Note: I subsequently learned that Aquantia was in the process of being acquired by Marvell around this time. Hence there may have been some policy changes afoot.) However, I soon found an alternate and reputable source for atlflashupdate_1.4.2_3.1.90.zip. Here it is: Solo10G Firmware 1.4.2_3.1.90 www.sonnettech.com/support/kb/kb.php?cat=538&expand=_a13&action=b1063#b1063 All of the files and the readme in the above .zip are identical to those found in the one I previously downloaded from Aquantia's site. From said readme: "AtlFlashUpdate is a tool for updating firmware on AQC100, AQC108, AQC107, AQN100, AQN108, and AQN107" Sonnet Solo10G PCIe Card | Sonnet www.sonnettech.com/product/solo10g-pcie-card.html One more thing: If I had to buy another AQC107-based 10G Ethernet card I would definitely choose between the Aquantia AQtion 10G Pro NIC in the OP's link or the Sonnet Solo10G PCIe Card. Why? Because in addition to both units having a ventilated PCI plate, they also sport a spring-loaded heat sink which suggests the use of thermal paste as opposed to the thermal pad found under the stand-off-mounted heat sink on the Asus XG-C100C. Relevance? I recently upgraded Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon's stock kernel ver. 4.15.x to the 5.3.0-19 kernel that's part of Ubuntu 19.10 and discovered that it can read the AQC107's temperature sensor. It currently reads 59C even though the XG-C100C is only connected to a 1G Ethernet switch. Fortunately the CM 690 II that I use has two vertically aligned 140mm side fans which I can ramp up next summer. Those who prefer PC cases equipped with vanity windows are unlikely to have that option.
Glad to see 10 gig local networking catching up. I believe that it has not previously caught up because hard drives and internet connection connections has usually been slower than 10gig and therefor the benefit has not been that visible. With FTTH 1gig connections and ssd's getting faster, the need to upgrade the home networking is getting more prevalent.
I believe a barrier is the effort involved in cable repacement. If you have cat 5 or 5e everywhere, with a sizable company, the cable replacement piece is substantial work.
@@brianw.4985 Yes but in network infrastructure most work are actually industrial and you would rather lay cat 8 cables than cat 5 on new installations.
Cat 6A is augmented category 6 and rated for 500 MHz vs the Category 5e which is rated for 100 MHz only so its definitely a good upgrade :) for those of you who are worried about the price you can get a lowered 10 port with similar specs for around 170 otherwise a 1 GB 8 port switch can run you around $30. Cabling and ends are cheap just make sure you don't get a lower rated connector.
I use used SFP+ cards and SFP+ DAC cables with a MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S+IN 8 port SFP+ switch. £10 per card / £10 per cable and £200 per switch. It's a managed switch but will only do 10Gb at layer 2, any layer 3 traffic / tagged packets have to go via the CPU not the custom switch chip, so will only be about 3Gb max. but it works really well for my purposes. SPF+ uses less power too, so less heat in your case.
actually that was in the attic, where the break happened was the end that was in the living room wall jack. it was likely just fatigued at that point where it was exposed to the weather all these years.
uhm, I think that's not Cat6a. That's just Cat6 with a little more twist count. The anti-crosstalk plastic divider is already present in Cat6. I believe a real Cat6a, aside from having more twist count, also have slightly higher copper gauge and at least a foil shielding with a grounding wire which will be attached to the metal body of the Cat6a connector.
Using a Mikrotik like that as a "dumb switch". This is breaking my hearth. This thing can route, be an OVPN server, manage IPSEC connections, and do your wildest networking dreams... I'm sad now.
This one has a wimpy CPU and RAM, it sucks at all the things you've listed. Like... really wimpy. 650mhz mipsbe. 64MB RAM. Worse than their gig switches. Basically good for running RouterOS to manage the switch chip and not a ton more.
I mean you gotta pay to play. There are much cheaper ways to network 10G, but if you want a copper (RJ45) switch and plug and play, you gotta pay up or wait.
@Linis Tech Tips - #protip, you can't see the actual difference (the one that makes a difference) by looking at the ends of a 5e and 6A cable. The main difference between 5e and 6A cables isn't the plastic separator "cross" between the pairs - that is vendor specific and exists on plenty of 5e cables too, and has done so for many years. The difference that enables the increased speed is the way the twisted pairs are twisted. It's necessary to twist the pairs differently to reduce crosstalk between pairs, because if one of the wires of a pair "meets" a wire from another pair repeatedly, it will increase crosstalk. 5e solves this by having the wire pairs be twisted differently, i.e. the brown pair could be twisted tightly/frequently, while the green pair could be much looser/infrequent. So the chances of random encounters between the same wires would be greatly reduced. This has an unfortunate side effect, as the brown pair in the example becomes longer per feet of cable than the green pair. And this difference, over a longer cable run, can be enough to have data arrive at different times and thus makes it necessary to reduce the speed (frequency). As this difference grows over the length of the cable, it is also the explanation why you can run 10G on a short 5e cable run, but not on a long one. 6A solves the problem of wires "meeting" differently: By having each wire pair be twisted in a tightness/frequency that changes along the length of the cable. So now, the brown pair might be twisted very tightly at one point, and then later on in the same cable be twisted very loosely. And the wire pairs are then put in at an offset, so that they will always be twisted differently in a given section of the cable. That way, the pairs don't "meet up" still, but the wire pairs end up pretty much the same length, which means the transmission time for each wire pair through a cable run will be very near identical, and thus, speed or frequency can be increased no matter the length (providing the cable is not longer than specifications), as opposed to 5e, where it'll work on shorter runs but fail at some indeterminable point a long the way. So rather than looking at the end of the cable, to spot the difference you would open up some section, like 3 feet, of cable and look at the way the pairs are differently twisted. :)

For those wondering what I'm brabbling on about:
- CRS: Cloud Router Switch
- 3: series 3
- 12: 12 wired interfaces
- 4C+: 4 Combo 10G/SFP ports
- 8XG: 8 5G/10G Ethernet ports
- RM: RackMount
Excellent name for its market audience.
And, Made in Latvia:)
Let's grab the book shall we?
- Operate at 500MHz instead of 250MHz of Cat5 or 100MHz of Cat5e
- higher purity copper, resulting in less losses over distance
- same AWG wires as cat6, ever so slightly thicker wires than cat5e (I guess you're right here)
- tighter twists
- a "plastic piece" in the middle to limit crosstalk
- thicker insulation around each wire
There you have it, the both of us were right.
Happy now?
@Gus Erland Ah yes, I'm totally clueless.

DOH! CONDUIT DUDE! Whenever I can (time/money/difficulty) I ALWAYS fit conduit in awkward situations! THEN adding or replacing cables to runs avoids those issues you were having.
I had conduit installed in key locations by my builder when I built my new house. They all thought it was overkill and I'd never use it. Now I have fiber and multiple Cat 5e runs pulled thru it. No regrets.

pro cabling tip, you dont need a screwdriver or anything to straighten them out
(this is gonna be crazy hard to explain in text, but here goes..)
1) untwist them
2) line them up in the right order
3) firmly hold them together (while keeping them flat) at two different points ~1/2 an inch apart
4) wiggle those 2 points back and forth on a 2 dimensional plane, the wires will straighten *much* more.
5) snip off the un-straightened part
do step 4 too much and you can work harden the copper and break the conductor. but that is how I do it I confess.

If this will helps, whean configurating the mikrotik switches and routers better use Winbox software, dont know what you use but i think simple using browser, configure RoMON that you can connect to device without any filter rules = saver things, you can also make many DHCP servers and VLAN rules for your servers to keep saver and separate devices from your normal devices like normal use laptops or phones, in ip>firewall>service ports change the ports you like beceose many of ppl like to try enter your cr using standard service ports and also if anyone can connect to your internet provider network and use scan in winbox, can see your device. In ip>firewall>nat you can make ports rules also in connections you will see all connections in and out to your network. Make in firewall filter rules flood protect rule for make your sarvers saver. In ip>dhcp server>leases you can easly make static adresses rules, also you can see there alerts.
PRO TIP - you can play music on your mikrotik switches and routers using scripting, you all can find in google serch. Think about that, flood rule starts to working, someone attacks your server, router starting the script to block that and also plays imperial march from star wars :D.
there are almost everything you can do with this router.
PRO TIP for ppl working in internet providers - if some company have many of radios from mikrotik and you dont know what radio you need to service, someone who can enter to this radio can play for you any music to locate the radio, we have many of SXT radios for clients and whean you reech the roof of building and see 6 radios .... that can helps
10gbps you can also reech using 2 x cat 5e cable, using any cables outside better use cables with gel inside, that will make water out from the inside of cable.

I'm still surprised how costly 10gbe is, the standard was ratified in 2006! (10GBaseT) which was 13 years ago and it's still rare in the consumer world. Considering the price of new ones (here in Europe) about 1k... Well that's cheap
@@alolanstarboy it's a Mikrotik. Mikrotik tends to overstate their abilities. I went a similar route, minus going CAT. I went Fiber Optic. Bought (2) Dual Port SFP+, 3 in total (1 was 49Y4252 EMULEX) off Ebay for less then $10.00 a piece. I see today they want to extort people for $179.00 a piece (Melanox) used, Just like NVidia - they bought Melanox. 2 in servers and one in my main rig. Ran 2 SFP+ Copper from the 32 core servers about $20.00 a piece and 2 Fiber Optic cables $12.00 a piece for to my rig upstairs through the register :) I do not currently get 20 Gigabit, but I do have 10G redundancy. I used the 4 port MicroTik. CRS305-1G-4S+IN ($144.49 off ebay - cheaper today). Jacked into a 32 Port Router / Switch that Google used to use less then $50 off ebay (has dual 10G Uplinks - used one). I did have to buy 4 transcievers (MikroTik S+85DLC03D) brand new cost me $55.00 total. I can easily max out 10 Gigabit - 1.2 GB a sec. I do have plans on upgrading the Mikrotik router. CRS309-1G-8S+ Hopefully then I will see 20 Gigabit. Basically raid 2 X 10 Gigabit ports.
I have since shut down both 32 core servers down and replaced them with a 3900X It has dual PCIE4.0 Raided NVME, 8 X 8TB (raid 0) & 2 X 10 TB (Raid 0) raided drives. I plan on completely removing Gigabit from the house. I do have my information backed up, so give me some slack on the raid 0 ;) I do build Operating Systems. Makes you wonder what my main Rig has does it not? I promise you. I do not have a mechanical hard disk or a SSD for that matter in my "Main Rig". I am all about speed. 20 Gigabit is roughly 2.4 GB a second across the network. I could also instruct a sever to build this or that, with the quickness.
That router they all come online? I went "Lite" stepping into 10 Gigabit. What I did not tell you.

I ate that. See I learn too. All Failures. This is a perfect time to extort people. I have $179.00 adapters I paid less then $10.00 for. I bet I could recover the above money. Bet money it does not happen. Maybe down the road I move to 40 Gigabit? That is actually 80 Gigabit, it is dual port. It is in my basement. I bet I could sell that for a grand or better. I do not like them. Want me to tell you I do not like money? I have enough & that should be all that matters.

4:43I kind of expected something along the lines of "Speaking of audible... Here's a message from our sponsor: Audible".
Hence there may have been some policy changes afoot.)
However, I soon found an alternate and reputable source for atlflashupdate_1.4.2_3.1.90.zip. Here it is:
Solo10G Firmware 1.4.2_3.1.90
www.sonnettech.com/support/kb/kb.php?cat=538&expand=_a13&action=b1063#b1063
All of the files and the readme in the above .zip are identical to those found in the one I previously downloaded from Aquantia's site.
From said readme:
"AtlFlashUpdate is a tool for updating firmware on AQC100, AQC108, AQC107, AQN100, AQN108, and AQN107"
Sonnet Solo10G PCIe Card | Sonnet
www.sonnettech.com/product/solo10g-pcie-card.html
One more thing:
If I had to buy another AQC107-based 10G Ethernet card I would definitely choose between the Aquantia AQtion 10G Pro NIC in the OP's link or the Sonnet Solo10G PCIe Card.

@@SuperSkandale new installs yes, 6a or 7 at least. But there are tons of existing installs with cat 5 or 5e.
You can use short runs of Cat 6 (NOT a) for 10GB - 55 meters vs 100 IIRC.
For MOST folks, that's not going to matter.

I really like this one. Seeing how to attach wiring is super cool

Linus: "The original cat-5e cable broke!!!" Reality: the mice chewed through the original cat-5e cable.
actually that was in the attic, where the break happened was the end that was in the living room wall jack. it was likely just fatigued at that point where it was exposed to the weather all these years.
I was just really making a funny playing off on the mouse/rat droppings in the attic.
I think it's great that Linus uses his face meme as a super-stretched background
Just... magnificent
uhm, I think that's not Cat6a.
I imagine there aren't many 10G switches made that aren't managed and affordable at the same time.
This one has a wimpy CPU and RAM, it sucks at all the things you've listed. Like... really wimpy. 650mhz mipsbe. 64MB RAM. Worse than their gig switches. Basically good for running RouterOS to manage the switch chip and not a ton more.
When its cheaper than a comparable dumb switch.... and a dumb switch is all you need.... nothing wrong with that.

My eyes got itchy just watching him crawl around up there XD

You may say how people who are poor are there because of bad decisions, bad education, etc.. But how are you the judge? What makes you special enough to allow you to judge people’s decisions and say if they were good or bad? What makes your conclusions valid? What I’m trying to say is treat people the way you want to be treated, because the comment that Peter made was generally not directed to you.
