I read that the filmmakers did countless auditions for the Angus Tully character but couldn't find the right fit for the role so they went to the schools where they were going shoot the film, and auditioned kids from the drama departments. That's where they found Dominic Sessa. The guy was literally hired straight out of drama class.
how do u feel about them finding out the modern cars part? I honestly just noticed now. Do you think they will make those changes in the future or leave it like that? Cognrats on working on a fine movie.
Amazing work. I knew there had to be some serious effects in there because of the retro locations, but I just could not find the seams! The mark of truely brilliant VFX.
This only gets better with every rewatch, I think it's genius that the movie pretty much tells you the central theme at the very beggining. "non nobis solum nati sumus." Not for ourselves alone are we born.
The Holdovers is already up there in my comfort movies list. Totally recommend watching Anatomy of a Fall or Society of the snow. These were some of my favourite movies this last year.
There’s a really great story about how Dominic Sessa was cast. I believe they were scouting/auditioning kids for the role and hadn’t found anyone yet. So they contacted the school where they were filming at, asked their theater department if they had anyone who would like to audition.. and that’s how we got Dominic Sessa! His first role, and he was incredible. That core 3 ensemble is so incredibly strong.
As someone who has a family member with terrible mental illness, this was such a cathartic movie, and as a teen brought me to a time that I wasn’t alive for, and made me feel right at home; Thx for the reaction guys!!!
One of my favourites of last year. Such a great story and performances. Incredible to think that that is young Dominic Sessa's (Angus) first film role!
Glad to see you guys enjoyed this movie! I loved it. Personally, Da'vine's performance was my favorite element of it just cause it feels so raw and emotional, but the whole thing is really beautifully put together.
Absolutely loved this movie! I'm from Massachusetts so it hit the spot for me even more. I saw this on 35mm film at the same movie theater that they filmed the theater scene in! My dad's also a teacher and the kid who depicts Curtis was one of his students!
Really liked this film. Some Alexander Payne movies don't hit me that well, but this had some fresh optimism in the script under the bleakness. Dominic Sessa is a interesting new actor, he's got charisma
One of the nominees I really loved more then the big ones like Barbie and Oppenheimer..just pure comfort cinema with a most definitely gonna be playing every Christmas for me. Also Paul should win but sadly cillian has been cemented to win best actor
I am truly completely in love with that *verry slight grainy quality over the film. It's so subtle! Really feels like something pulled right out of childhood when watching something on video cassette. What a beautiful nostalgic feeling. I want more current films to do this
@@WedgeTheEagle yeah the school in the movie is deerfield academy in western mass. paul giamatti gave an interview that mentioned that he used to swim against deerfield academy when he was in high school.
The town location shots were in Shelburne Falls, MA near where I grew up. Although I grew up in the 90s-00s, a lot of Western Mass was (and is) still aesthetically in the 70s/80s, so Christmastime in my memories looks a lot like how it's portrayed in this film. Something really special was captured in this film, but I feel a deeper connection because it feels so cozy and familiar. This is 100% going to be a must-watch Christmas movie for me and my family every year now. I watched it with my parents on Christmas this year and my dad had a great time pausing the TV to scrutinize the shots and point out where things were (he also clocked the modern cars lol) - and spent the entire end credits trying to figure out if the turn Paul takes at the end would be the right direction toward Boston or not on that road.
Sideways and Win Win are 2 great ones with Paul. I pet sit for a Yale drama professor and Da’Vine was her student. Said she’s lovely. She’s great in Only Murders in the Building too.,
This seems like a pretty random choice for y'all (happy it was on a poll and won!), but I really enjoy this movie and I'm looking forward to seeing y'alls reaction!
I watched this for the first time about a week and a half ago. I was honestly surprised! I wasn't expecting much, but it was very heartfelt. I almost cried at the end tbh.
Dominic Sessa definitely deserved at least a nomination for supporting role at the Oscars and that too this being his first acting gig. I would take out Sterling K Brown even though I think he's done a great job in American Fiction.
Watched this with my mom on Christmas night right before I went to bed, it was one of the best ways to end the day and it become an instant classic for My mom and I (and eventually my sister). Definitely gonna watch this movie every December from now on.
this was such a surprise for me! both the movie and your reaction because i didn't expect to have this type of movie showcased in your channel. this was hands down one of my fav movies from this/last year. so happy you guys got the chance to check it!
in the gym scene, one of the banners on the wall says TABOR, which is the school i go to!! it was so dope to see something filmed close by!!! I also like that part of the message is the teacher realizing that his students aren't all just privileged and dumb (some are ofc). I go to my school for free because my mom is an assistant there, (i would not have the means otherwise), and the message was really sweet for me.
Just finished watching this ..loved it, such a soothing strong character build up .great acting angus .marry ...loved them...must watch love from india 🇮🇳
Thank you, Eric! Thank you, Calvin! Thank you, Aaron! 🌨 I *love* this movie!!! But I don't agree how recent commercials try to make it seem like a raucous comedy. It's a layered comedy/drama... there's a difference. And for such a great movie, there's no good reason to try to trick unsophisticated audiences to see it.
I was absolutely shocked to find out this was Dominic Sessa's first movie role. I thought all three of the main characters were fantastic and he fit right in with Paul Giamatti and Da'Vine Joy Randolph. Both of them were Oscar nominated (with Da'Vine winning) and I really feel like he could have been too. The Oscars can be a bit snobby and political... they probably didn't want to nominate a newcomer in his first role. I personally feel a great performance is a great performance and your experience - or lack thereof - shouldn't matter. Either way, he's got a bright future that kid.
I have a question unrelated to this movie. ~ a year ago you said you gonna react to more Indian movies, but haven't done one since (iirc). Will it ever happen?
Love this movie! That smelly condition he hsd is a real thing. I seen a video on it before. I feel terrible for women who have it. Smelling like fish. It doesn't matter how many showers you take or try to cover it up.....ughh difficult situation.

He doesn't have a "thing for Mary", he simply respects her.

That’s so cool
Paul Giamatti also couldn’t see out of one eye
Such a fantastic find, too. I'm really looking forward to what he does next. He's a really good, interesting young actor.
I'm really glad Da'Vine Joy swept award season for this role she was truly amazing
I loved the moment she had with Lupita Nyongo at the Oscar’s. It was awesome to know they were in the same acting class together
Glad yall were really into this. My company did the VFX work on it. I was really excited to watch this one for a long time, and it did not disappoint
That's amazing.

Too much subtitles for them
Is it that comfortable?
That is the most emotional handshake I've evee seen!!!!
I cried my eyes out at that scene….the whole film was worth it for that…..but the whole film was an excellent ride anyway.

Should have been nominated for an Oscar. Was better than the winner.
this movie felt like a warm hug
As someone who has a family member with terrible mental illness, this was such a cathartic movie, and as a teen brought me to a time that I wasn’t alive for, and made me feel right at home;
Thx for the reaction guys!!!
Oh...this is an awesome surprise for a movie reaction. The Holdovers is now in my Christmas movie rotation.
"What are they, secret agents?"
"No, they're Mormons"
"Oh"
perfection
Please watch more of the Oscar nominees this year!! Poor Things, American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall and Past Lives were phenomenal!
Past Lives and American Fiction were fantastic.
American fiction would go right over their heads
Nope.
Best movie of 2023 for me. Davine probably won every best supporting actress award during awards season
would love to see you guys watch another underrated oscar contender in the society of the snow...incredible movie, i think you'd all really enjoy it
Honestly one of my favorite movies, watched it with my dad
Yes! So glad you reacted to this film. Thank you
One of my favourites of last year. Such a great story and performances. Incredible to think that that is young Dominic Sessa's (Angus) first film role!
Such a beautiful movie, really glad you guys reacted to it
All the Oscar noms this year were honestly fantastic, but this one really stands out for me. Hope y’all react to at least a few of the others as well
I’m so happy you guys got to watch this movie. It was one of my favorites from last year and is such a sad, but also feel good movie.
This is genuinely one of the most genuine movies I’ve ever seen. It’s a beautiful story.
This is a pretty underrated film compared to some of the blockbusters it was in contention with for awards season. Hope ya enjoyed
I love this film so much. Every Christmas from here on out.
Just watched this a few nights ago. Feels like a throwback film, as in, they dont make them like this anymore. Full of honesty but not pessimistic.
This was my favourite movie of last year. Love the chemistry between the main trio😊
Glad to see you guys enjoyed this movie! I loved it. Personally, Da'vine's performance was my favorite element of it just cause it feels so raw and emotional, but the whole thing is really beautifully put together.
what a brilliant movie! And way funnier than I was expecting. Alexander Payne doesn't miss
Absolutely loved this movie! I'm from Massachusetts so it hit the spot for me even more. I saw this on 35mm film at the same movie theater that they filmed the theater scene in! My dad's also a teacher and the kid who depicts Curtis was one of his students!
From the director who made the Alan raptor in JP3
redemption arc
Such an excellent movie. This past year was so good for new films.
Really liked this film. Some Alexander Payne movies don't hit me that well, but this had some fresh optimism in the script under the bleakness. Dominic Sessa is a interesting new actor, he's got charisma
There were so many great movies last year and this one is definitely in my top 5!
This film is so heartwarming!

I believe that this wasn’t actually shot on film, but was made to look like it was in post.
24:07 for an optical illusion with Calvin's drink
Yes!
This was filmed a couple of towns over from where I lived. I remember hearing about it for a while
I love this movie so much. What a gem.
This movie does such a good job capturing Western Massachusetts, where I grew up.
To be fair, the entire movie was shot in Massachusetts
I think all the locations were accurate. Like a recognized downtown Boston and watertown and I bet they shot in Roxbury too
@@WedgeTheEagle yeah the school in the movie is deerfield academy in western mass. paul giamatti gave an interview that mentioned that he used to swim against deerfield academy when he was in high school.

The quietest film that had the loudest impact for me this past year - a true classic :) Thanks for reacting to it.
For those wondering, the film was shot on digital but edited to look like film in post-production
Such a wonderful movie, I wish they could give the Sscar for two actors so Paul and Cillian could both win.
19:29 Eric getting mad over a brownie🤣
For being the debut role of Dominic Sessa he absolutely killed it. I am looking forward to seeing him in more roles in the future.
I love Cillian Murphy to bits but I genuinely believe Giamatti should have won the Oscar for this
as fantastic as Paul is in this, the performance doesn't touch what Cillian did in Oppenheimer. in my opinion, of course.
If only they could have split the Oscar in half lol
I agree Oppenheimer was not a good film, and Cillian Murphy was sleepwalking through it.
@@ecksearoh6283 That’s your opinion and all, but that’s a biiiig claim. I consider it one of the best films ever made. Not the best, but one of them
@@Shine28 Not in my opinion. Murphy was okay. And Dominic Sessa deserved the best-supporting award ahead of Downey jr. Was he even nominated?
This is why I think they'll love The Bear, if it wins poll... lol
Edit: AND IT DID!
