    6:16 Commotio cordis is not an underlying medical condition waiting to “reveal itself”, it is a sudden onset injury caused by the exact right amount of force in the exact right location of the chest at the exact right angle within an exact 40 millisecond window in the cardiac rhythm. It can happen to anybody who receives a blow to the chest under the same conditions.

      Exactly. The risk factors include anything that increases that window proportionally, such as an elevated heart rate (the window is invariant with respect to heart rate) and long QT syndrome (which increases the window overall), but it's something that can happen to anyone under the right circumstances. It's basically a zero-day vulnerability, but for the human body. If there's enough of a jolt at exactly the right place (target, direction, degree of intensity) at exactly that part of the cycle, to avoid getting into the weeds about how action potentials work, let's just say it throws everything out of whack and cardiac arrest ensues. As rare as it is, one relatively common occurrence is in baseball, especially at lower levels, when batters get hit by a pitch. I think the window is actually only about 10 milliseconds, which would explain the 1-3% range I've heard quoted as the probability of it occurring with all the conditions aside from timing met. In any case, it's a freak occurrence no more endemic to football than any other sport with even the potential for contact, and it's somewhat ironic that this of all things caused as big of a cultural shift as it did, result notwithstanding.

    • @0mathgaming
      @0mathgaming Месяц назад +4

      @@greghmn The reason that it had such an impact on football culture is because it's something that had never happened in an NFL game since NFL games were shown on TV (and I'm talking about the manner in which he went down, not that he went down on his own for no reason, because as mentioned in the video, that did happen in the early 70s) and it wasn't something we as fans of football even knew was a possibility.

    • @greghmn
      @greghmn Месяц назад +1

      @@0mathgaming True. It's still surprising to me how few people knew about commotio cordis until this happened, because of how shocking/interesting it is if for no other reason. There's a bunch of fake martial arts bro-science bullshit that's far less interesting but still makes the rounds, and this is sort of in the same genre.

    Amazing job with this video. For anyone who isn't a Bills fan, the 2022 season will have its own 30 for 30 one day. Hamlin was just the end of what many call "The Season From Hell".
    On top of Hamlin dying in the field...there was a hate crime shooting in Buffalo in May, June our owner suffered a stroke (or heart issue, still not sure) and was in the ICU for months, Dawson Knox's 22 year old brother died, SO many injuries to key players, our long tenured play by play John Murphy suffered a stroke the week before that Bengals game. Buffalo also had 2 generational snow storms with one game needing to be moved to Detroit (giving the Bills 10 away games that year). This also made it so the Bills were the first team to play 3 away games in 11 days. The other massive storm which took lives stranded the team in Chicago for Christmas Eve.
    It was the most exhausting football season for any team in the history of the NFL and maybe all of sports. At the end, Bills fans were just glad the players could finally get some rest, the season was absolute torture.

Bills Mafia didnt think they could hold their own visiting the Bengals. The Bills were comatose after that game and sleepwalked into the playoffs. Almost losing to Miami and getting shellacked at home by said Bengals. 2022 has been the underwhelming season in the middle of the Allen-Bills Era.

    For anyone who has never seen real CPR and Defibrillation, it's brutal. Medics have to hammer away and electrocute a person who is still and limp. The patient might flail around, compressions often break ribs. Not only is the act of CPR a clear sign that something has gone terribly wrong, but the patient dies in the vast majority of cases. It would absolutely have been traumatising to the players watching, and there was almost no way that they'd be able to keep playing after seeing that happen to a friend and colleague.

      A few years ago in Britain one charity did a CPR tv advert. They got soccer hard-man and gangster actor Vinnie Jones to do it, and he delivered the serious but accurate line "better he breaks a rib than kicks the bucket". Direct acknowledgement that saving lives means breaking bones (although most often it's actually the rib popping out of the cartilage rather than breaking but y'all get it)

    I was at this game with my dad, our first game in Buffalo and he is handicapped so he has trouble standing for long periods of time, and right before the kick off he said,"I'll sit down after this cause this is going to be a 102 yard kickoff return touchdown". While he got the yardage wrong on this one, he nailed it for the second return, and being in that stadium with him, feeling it shake as all of the worries left for just a moment was truly unforgettable.

    Hello, Secret Base. I first want to say I appreciate the work and effort that goes into making these videos. To try and make a long story short, I’m a Raiders fan, and I’m honestly getting tired of other “Raider fans” suggesting we TANK the rest of this season. It’s also crazy other fan bases think it’s a good idea. Okay so now my point of this comment. I’ve been doing some research of my own on the percentages of many things involving 1st Overall Draft picks, 1st round QBs, and QBs taken in the 1st round after another QB had been selected. Basically I tried to find a video of any kind that showed the stats of high draft picks, and how they help their team over their career. So far, with Patrick Mahomes, the stats for Postseason record, Super Bowl appearances/wins and regular season victories, are better for QBs that were passed on than the 18 QBs selected 1st Overall since 2000. I think it would be interesting to make a video that deep dived in the history of longevity/wins/postseason/SB victories when it comes to 1st overall draft picks throughout the NFL’s history. I will say that I found that out of the 18 QBs selected 1st overall, 77% of them have at least made the postseason, while the remaining 57 QBs selected in the first round have only 19 QBs that have made the playoffs. However the 19 that had a QB drafted before them have more Lombardis, more SB appearances and have a better postseason record. I really think a video that showed the statistical history of 1st Overall Picks would dispel the myth (imo) that “tanking” for a better draft picks throughout the doesn’t necessarily equate to Championships, let alone a better overall team.

      See, I knew the opposite. I knew the NFL wouldnt make them play. I knew from the look in Josh Allen and Stephon Diggs eyes that no player on that field would take another snap and if the NFL wanted a team playing for the #1 seed to forfeit on national TV, they would have to take the heat for that. The shield care about the circus going on, but they care about their image more.

    I wasn't at this game, but I can tell you all it was a traumatic experience for everyone. I don't normally follow football, but I felt the same concern as a lot of other people when I saw the news because Hamlin's injury was _that_ significant. I've personally seen injuries on the field before in high school football, but only a couple really even come close to comparing to this. And I can testify to the nature of trauma.
    There is also something utterly, deeply wrong about being in a football stadium packed with people that is totally silent. Really, any place that normally has some level of noise going on at all times, to be in a place like that when everyone is silent is terrifying. I've only encountered it a few times in my life. I was never the type for football itself, but I joined my high school's marching band and still help out with their events to this day. The first time I encountered that kind of silence was in band, on the field, as the show my freshman year, which was about NYC, included a tribute to 9/11.
    The most recent experience with both that awful silence and witnessing injuries on the field occurred this fall, when I was back with the band for the 70-year Alumni Night. It was also one of the worst I've seen. One of the players for the away team, my high school's rival, went down. I didn't see what happened, but within seconds aides from our side (who were much closer) were running for the First Aid bags. Both teams converged near the player, while leaving room for the EMS, as the away team's coach ran to get the player's family. One of the moments that is still crystal clear in my mind is another away player, either a close friend or brother, crying and hugging one of our people, who was comforting him.
    The scariest part was that the injured guy wasn't really moving. One of the things you always look for is movement of the extremities. Every time a player is injured, it's always scary, but if they're moving their hands and feet, you feel slightly better about the situation. Then someone sent one of the younger helpers (maybe a sibling of one of our players) back to the bench to grab scissors. I can't explain how I knew that's what she was looking for, but my intuition was spot on. They cut the injured player out of his gear, and around this time someone I hadn't seen run across the field came back, followed by the ambulance crew who's always on standby.
    They loaded the kid onto a backboard, and then onto a gurney, and wheeled him off, followed by his family and the player who'd been hugging one of our aides. I didn't see it, but my sister (and later the news) reported that the player gave a thumbs up as they wheeled him off, and our side cheered louder than they would all night. A minute later the Visitor side got the news that their guy was able to give that thumbs up and also cheered.
    I know this was one of my little community's moments and somewhat different in key ways, but it's also a good place to talk about it because of the comparisons. For someone whose knowledge of football, despite four years of witnessing it, is still "Ball Go Far", I still feel concern when things like this happen (beyond the usual normal concern for my fellow people) because in many ways, though the band sometimes doesn't like to admit it, football is the reason we come together, and the thing that makes it possible to even have things like marching band.
    TL;DR: Teams might be bitter rivals, but when someone gets hurt it doesn't matter who you're cheering for. We're all at that stadium for the same reason.

    My mom (a lifelong Bills fan) is one of those "drag 'em off the field and resume the game" types, but even she was worried something was deeply wrong in those lengthy 10 minutes and felt they should just call the game. (though if had been a Bengals player, I don't think she'd have had the same feeling---good on all the Bengals fans there that night)
