Guthrie and his friends like Uncle Larry are helping turn the tide of RUclips guitar videos from slick sales pitches to real community and learning. They bring a sort of older brother's credibility to it.

I like how you go over the same concepts over and over and over and over and etc... These ARE the key concepts (As you say) and getting these down are absolutely the key to opening up the freeboard. I like that you don't jump all over the place and do something different each time, you stick to what the key concepts are. Brilliant.

    Hey Guthrie
I am a 60 year old kid thanks to you and your gangs guitar lessons. The guitar neck is now opening up in a way as never before, explained in such a ludic, holistic manner. I love your work.

GT! Two things. One, the music coming out in that Brett Papa jam was incredible but my dominant take away was the deep love and friendship in the room. It's palpable and I'm thrilled for all you guys. Two, the lesson in this particular video might be the best and clearest encapsulation of what you've been saying for a few years now. With the flood of information constantly coming out on RUclips, I both saved and emailed this to myself with a description of why it's so good, so I can easily find it in years to come. It's golden and worth coming back to. (also texted it to my playing friends) Thank you, GT, it means a lot. -GB

Dude, not sure if it's white shirt, but this was one of the best lessons- TONS of great nuggets- calling out the chords while soloing definitely helps- your teaching "chops" are really getting top notch. I was watching an older video of Guthrie’s where he was reading a semi-negative comment about his teaching basically saying if he was a natural teacher he would slow down. To that person, I say hogwash! Guthrie is the guy you go to when you’ve been through the basics and you’re ready for some advanced, fast paced learning. Keep it up Guthrie! There aren’t many players at your level on RUclips or anywhere for that matter. We’re lucky to live in an era where we have access to such an amazing player and teacher. Many thanks to you!

Love it when you stretch it out Mr GT, the mistakes are actually a real gift (what you call a mistake sounds like that whole business of going to delight of the edge to my ears). Watching you move through these things, it just reinforces to me to have the chord shapes burned into my mind and memorized in my hands. Everything is coming out of those shapes. The arpeggios, the scale of all kinds, the harmonies and harmonic movement. It is just so brilliantly simple, yet so powerful.

I now see the CAGED shapes, arpeggios, pentatonic, and diatonics and how its all connected, thanks to your insistance!..and feel that freedom that I so envy to navigate the fretboard and make music....you are an excellent teacher.. particularly your constat reference to the CAGED system and the importance of the SHAPES..... Awesome licks, Guthrie!
Before I even saw this video, I happened across the one with you and Tom and Jed playing at Brett's house/studio. I didn't get to see the whole video, cuz i got interrupted, when i came back to it, YT had already moved me to a new video! I hate that!
But i saw enough of it to see that you 3 guys were playing some AMAZING music, and to think it was all spontaneous, free form, improvising is just incredible!
All you guys are awesome, but you are simply too humble.
    (Is that even possible?)
[Yeah, there's a joke, "i got an award today for humility, but then i showed it to my friend and so they took it away."]
Anyhoo, keep it up, dude! You're really progressing, i can see it myself!
Don't get me wrong, you were already a great guitar player, but I can see you're getting even better! 🤪
    Great kesson, as usual!

Leaving the 6 out on the way up is a great shift sonically for me - definitely adds more weight; then start it from the 3rd and end on the 2nd (9th) etc opens up some new stuff. Then use all of the easy substitutions like playing the G major idea over other chords and it really shines! Then the descending part really solidifies the sound. Such a simple thing from a master sharing some true nuggets - thank you Guthrie for all you and your crew do! (I’ll shut up now and practice).

You lay it all out so well I find myself speechless at times. I learned to play by ear and even though I had some lessons in music theory I was always too busy playing gigs to sit down and integrate it into my playing. Luckily I did use all four fingers on my fretting hand unlike my three fingered contemporaries of the 70’s. Your playing and lessons have really helped me understand what I’m doing and my playing has become much more intentional and a lot less accidental! The inspiration and creativity is still there from the ear playing and improvising and now I have more control and latitude.

I need help getting my brain around a sweet tune you wielded during a NAMM show demo.
    7 years ago-ish. J Rockett.
Super chill minor-sounding descending run from the 7th bump, add9s... Twangy little cowboy turnaround.
I’m going off memory here. Never get it right. I’d love to hear it again. See how it’s done.
