Guthrie and his friends like Uncle Larry are helping turn the tide of RUclips guitar videos from slick sales pitches to real community and learning. They bring a sort of older brother's credibility to it.
I like how you go over the same concepts over and over and over and over and etc... These ARE the key concepts (As you say) and getting these down are absolutely the key to opening up the freeboard. I like that you don't jump all over the place and do something different each time, you stick to what the key concepts are. Brilliant.
Hey Guthrie I am a 60 year old kid thanks to you and your gangs guitar lessons. The guitar neck is now opening up in a way as never before, explained in such a ludic, holistic manner. I love your work. I never subscribe to anything but I have subscribed to your channel. Thanks a million.
GT! Two things. One, the music coming out in that Brett Papa jam was incredible but my dominant take away was the deep love and friendship in the room. It's palpable and I'm thrilled for all you guys. Two, the lesson in this particular video might be the best and clearest encapsulation of what you've been saying for a few years now. With the flood of information constantly coming out on RUclips, I both saved and emailed this to myself with a description of why it's so good, so I can easily find it in years to come. It's golden and worth coming back to. (also texted it to my playing friends) Thank you, GT, it means a lot. -GB
I think it speaks volumes about your incredible natural ability that you could be playing that amazing intro (noodling/arrangement/awesomeness/whatever) and you had not even figured out what key it was in. You have an amazing gift
Guthrie thank you so much for this. Super helpful! I appreciate that you keep coming back to these topics. Repetition is the mother of all skills! Keep them coming my friend 🙏
Fully agree with you Guthrie, that Brett Papa video with you, tom and Jed was amazing! I really loved when Tom was asking each of you what you were thinking as you approached the chords of those compressions ;-)! Please do more of that
Dude, not sure if it's white shirt, but this was one of the best lessons- TONS of great nuggets- calling out the chords while soloing definitely helps- your teaching "chops" are really getting top notch. Nobody cares about the mistakes, actually it helps us see the process- thank you for all the telecasting!
I was watching an older video of Guthrie’s where he was reading a semi-negative comment about his teaching basically saying if he was a natural teacher he would slow down. To that person, I say hogwash! Guthrie is the guy you go to when you’ve been through the basics and you’re ready for some advanced, fast paced learning. Keep it up Guthrie! There aren’t many players at your level on RUclips or anywhere for that matter. We’re lucky to live in an era where we have access to such an amazing player and teacher. Many thanks to you!
Good LORD GT ! I wish all my mistakes sounded and felt that good in your last rant !!! Gonna watch this vid quite a few times for gleaning purposes !!! Y’all have a safe Labor Day - never forget ! Cheers 2:09 from Thailand ! 😎🇺🇸🇹🇭🇺🇸⚓️🎸✅☕️😸🤠😎
Love it when you stretch it out Mr GT, the mistakes are actually a real gift (what you call a mistake sounds like that whole business of going to delight of the edge to my ears). Watching you move through these things, it just reinforces to me to have the chord shapes burned into my mind and memorized in my hands. Everything is coming out of those shapes. The arpeggios, the scale of all kinds, the harmonies and harmonic movement. It is just so brilliantly simple, yet so powerful.
This lesson really hits on what I’m trying to learn and play. I’m stuck in pentatonics. And I think I tend to pick too many notes and all my lines sound clunky. I’m going to rewatch this over and over until I got it. Thanks Guthrie! Keep up the great teaching man. And your playing just knocks me out!
Omg what a kick ass lesson. You’re consistently put out some of the best lessons and applicable vids on RUclips. Thanks! Also I got the new vinyl and it’s siiiiick 🍻
As allways Guthrie! Such a good Lesson from 13:48 on i love it! Real knowledge and inspiration here! And at Brets place a lot happened with Uncle Larry also....it was really a great symbiosis of you two, coming from a sort of different places but beeing so deep musical personalities and respectful with each other, a real great gift for the guitarworld! Thanks for that Bret and thanks for the Record! Enjoy the moments you have Guthrie, white shirt shorts, its life and real. Thats why we love you and your content. And last, man this tele sounds so sweet under your fingers!
I absolutely love your videos!...You offer more musical wisdom and insights with your fabulous playing in these videos than 99% of the other instructional guitar videos on YT. Subscribed! :-)
This is such a key concept. You’re the best instructor out there. I had a blast meeting you at the Underdog earlier this year. I was the “muscle head”guy from NC😂
Guthrie I love your videos. You're 'cool' little things seem to be exactly where I am with my playing and I can't count the number of 'Ah Ha' moments you've given me. Thanks man.
You are an excellent player! I have watched you for many years.. your commitment to guitar, music, and your network of musicians, and students, that I have watched grow! I now see the CAGED shapes, arpeggios, pentatonic, and diatonics and how its all connected, thanks to your insistance!..and feel that freedom that I so envy to navigate the fretboard and make music....you are an excellent teacher.. particularly your constat reference to the CAGED system and the importance of the SHAPES..... I personally see now why you are a master.... I know you work very hard at your investment into your creativity on your instruments.. your peers, and the many of us that grow from your lessons. Take care of yourself!!! Nashville needs you around!
Yet another simple but instantly applicable concept. I think of everything in 1 to 8 # system (rarley think in 9th or 13th n all). Just saying remove the 6 ascending and you can keep it descending because of ... ya know....Sounds good. Exactly what I need. I always notice these things in my playing, but hearing you talk them simply like this is really connecting things for me. Thanks again dude
Guthrie, Bukovac, Jedd and Brett are Super Stars and they find the time to invite us on a journey! You can they all really care about teaching and love what they do! And enjoy seeing people become better musicians! That’s what keeps me coming back! These guys are the real deal! How lucky are we to have these dudes available to dusters like me!! 😂
Listening to the French Family Band today. Thanks again for posting these videos. They help me to get my head organized for creating curriculum. They truly help a ton. I may take one of your courses at some point just to have something to do on guitar.
I wasn't able to watch the live jam from yesterday until late last night but that was awesome watching you all jam like that and then another great lesson video today too this is the best weekend thank you for the videos bro. Salud!
Awesome licks, Guthrie! Before I even saw this video, I happened across the one with you and Tom and Jed playing at Brett's house/studio. I didn't get to see the whole video, cuz i got interrupted, when i came back to it, YT had already moved me to a new video! I hate that! But i saw enough of it to see that you 3 guys were playing some AMAZING music, and to think it was all spontaneous, free form, improvising is just incredible! All you guys are awesome, but you are simply too humble. (Is that even possible?) [Yeah, there's a joke, "i got an award today for humility, but then i showed it to my friend and so they took it away."] Anyhoo, keep it up, dude! You're really progressing, i can see it myself! Don't get me wrong, you were already a great guitar player, but I can see you're getting even better! 🤪 Great kesson, as usual! 👌👍
This intro really sticked out of all your lessons! I loved it! Then again, I love your style of teaching. Hope i can get a few online lessons with you one day ❤
Wow, what a joy to hear from you. the musicality of your lessons makes me progress. You deserve, through your talent, everything that happens to you. Thank you, thank you. Hello from France.
Guthrie this was a fantastic lesson. Thank you, I have always had trouble “seeing” the chords. This broke it down where I could see at least the triad. I’m going to continue to use this exercise to reinforce where the pentatonic and the chords “collide” much appreciate this lesson
I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago and you’ve made so many things I never really understood make actual sense. I feel like I’ve learned more in this short time than I have in my 20ish years of mediocre playing. I wish I would’ve discovered your channel a while ago. Keep on posting more stuff Guthrie!
Leaving the 6 out on the way up is a great shift sonically for me - definitely adds more weight; then start it from the 3rd and end on the 2nd (9th) etc opens up some new stuff. Then use all of the easy substitutions like playing the G major idea over other chords and it really shines! Then the descending part really solidifies the sound. Such a simple thing from a master sharing some true nuggets - thank you Guthrie for all you and your crew do! (I’ll shut up now and practice).
My wife and I were in Hendersonville a few years back. Almost moved out there from Virginia. There’s a cool restaurant we went to called the Rudder. Enjoy the videos
You lay it all out so well I find myself speechless at times. I learned to play by ear and even though I had some lessons in music theory I was always too busy playing gigs to sit down and integrate it into my playing. Luckily I did use all four fingers on my fretting hand unlike my three fingered contemporaries of the 70’s. Your playing and lessons have really helped me understand what I’m doing and my playing has become much more intentional and a lot less accidental! The inspiration and creativity is still there from the ear playing and improvising and now I have more control and latitude.
Appreciate your gift! I do and learn so much every time you share. May play a little today at the Sand Bar at Pirates Cove. Thanks so much for your lessons.
This whole concept is something that needs to be taught to beginners as soon as possible. I stumbled across this idea on my own a couple years ago and I wish someone had taught me this years ago. It would’ve made such a huge difference. Not many instructors show this! 🤘
With all you've got going on, it's great to see you sound and grounded. Awesome content, and the noodling catches my ear everytime! I catch a small tidbit each time i see one of your videos. Thanks!
That G pentatonic to chord shape and then going up the diatonics. Why has no one ever pointed that out. Genius. Your playing today was sublime somewhere between classical forms with Jazz influenced melody So musical. Inspiring stuff 👍. And free! Sometimes I really love RUclips…sometimes
Thank you! This was helpful. I was stuck playing through every note in the scale to get to the chord tones. This helps connect CAGED in a way that’s familiar. Seeing chord tones as their own smaller scales now too. Love your playing. Very inspiring.
Love this! Practising in an environment where there is no other musicians is so hard, but watching how you are able to understand the guitar is so inspiring, and giving me more motivation to try and sit down to work on this.. i try everyday, but end up noodling instead😂 but i am now insistent on at least learning the caged system and all the scale positions.. videos like this make it so much easier for me to understand😎

I'm trying so hard not to overthink it. I spend too much time in that Maj sound and not enough on the Minor as I run up the neck. You just showed me that so I'll git onit. Hey the Feed brought me a 4 year old video of you and Billy Strings playing over Heard It Through the Grapevine. Man you were taking it to places and levels it's never been before. Billy was having fun and giving Good Stank Face during your solo. Such an amazing performance dude. I know Billy can light it up as well but that version was showcasing your talents.
WOW!! Didn't realize that ascending 6th is literally the reason why my pentatonic stuff has been sounding so cliche. Crazy that just one small note on the ascending makes such a difference.
Guthrie, Sir, I need help getting my brain around a sweet tune you wielded during a NAMM show demo. 7 years ago-ish. J Rockett. Super chill minor-sounding descending run from the 7th bump, add9s...
