  • A classic ghost story read by H. Washington Sawyer. Jackson was maybe the greatest American writer of supernatural and gothic fiction in the 20th Century. Her most famous productions were the short story "The Lottery" and the novel "The Haunting of Hill House" which was made into the 1963 masterpiece horror movie "The Haunting" as well as later adaptations. "The Lovely House" is about equally well known as "A Visit" it was first published in 1952.

I wrote Shirley's son Laurence who lives in California and told him what a fan I was of his mother's work; he graciously replied to my letter and I treasure it

Did you write to Barry !?
I've been thinking about making a pilgrimage to N. Bennington.
Discovered Miss Shirley as an unhappy teen - only a few months before the grand lady died.

Shirley Jackson! I love her. And, I may need to listen to this again... I feel like I missed something. Thank you for posting.

sounds like one of Jackson's subtle "tricks"; she loved playing with the mind's "corridors" & she was obviously "house happy"

I want to like this but its too confusing. This story lacks clarity and direction. I wasn't scared or shook, just shaking my head at the end.
