Today on Pop Fix, let's talk about great songs from the 80s that haven't been given their due. Despite a resurgence of 80s music in TV shows and movies of late (think Stranger Things, Ready Player One, and Glow), our five featured songs never seem to make the cut. These are true feel good songs that showcase a combination of artistic talent with brilliant lyrics and music. Do you agree with The Professor of Rock's list? What passed-over 80s song would you add? I don't think it has ever really been forgotten, but The Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town" always transports me whenever I hear it. In 2021, it always fills me with nostalgia for the 80s. Even when it was popular in the 80s, it hearkened back to simpler times and bygone eras. It makes me wistful just thinking about it.
The inclusion of orchestral instruments including the cello, English horn and timpani was a stroke of genius. These borrowed sounds from the world of classical music added new expressive possibilities to the music. The crescendos and diminuendos in those long, sustained notes held by the English horn, and the dramatic rolls and hits in the timpani were a kind of reinvention of what a bass line could be in pop music.
It was brilliant.
It’s on my 80’s playlist. Love that song.
100% agree! In the 80's, I was listening to hair band music, plus a sprinkling of the pop Top 40's. Life in A Northern Town was not the kind of music I listened to, but I taped it off the radio and put it on one of my favorite list tape. There was something about it, so haunting, so beautiful, so timeless. A song that made me feel everything would be OK during my turbulent teens.
The video for life in a northern town was made only a couple of miles from my house in a northern yorkshire town, always loved the song
Oh hey la la la la!
This was used very nicely in a King of the Hill episode, although its use was for mood rather than the meaning of the song. ruclips.net/video/33CkjH4-arY/видео.html
"Voices Carry" from 'Til Tuesday was a song that I didn't remember from the 80's and then heard it on the radio in the 2000's and thought, "that's a damn good song" so I looked it up and couldn't believe that was from 1985. Would love to hear that more in TV/film.
Joshua Miller just had that on my work out playlist this morning!
Love "Voices Carry" a song well before it's time...
@@ProfessorofRock Absolutely!
Another great, but little known song by Til Tuesday is 'Coming Up Close'.
@@robertduley5026 Oh, man! That's a good one, too!
"It's My Life" by Talk-Talk, "One Thing Leads to Another" by The Fixx, Loverboy by Billy Ocean, "On the Darkside" by John Cafferty, and "The One Thing" and "Don't Change" by INXS are all quintessentially 80's and transport me back everytime. Love that you closed and recognized General Publics amazing tune, "Tenderness."
If you ever sat and watched a RUclips channel that every single time you tune in, you long for those innocent days when you fell in "love" again, for the first time.....or you instantly recall the level of excitement you felt because you were attending a school dance in the cafeteria, then tune in to this channel! It is always a very warm "welcome back" when I watch your channel. This community, OUR community is, without a doubt, one of the best there is!!
I loved ‘It’s my life’. I think No Doubt covered it too.
Tenderness lives forever
Those INXS songs are the era from them that is best. Ironically, their later stuff is MORE known and praised...and in my mind, below those earler songs in quality.
@@whutzat damn straight
"Loverboy" is still my favorite by Billy Ocean! It hit number 2, but isn't played like his other hits! And can we talk about that epic guitar solo? Yes, kids, R&B often had guitar solos in the 1980s! 😂
“The Promise” by When In Rome is an absolute gem. It’s such a fine pop tune that it makes no sense the band only had that one widely known song.
I was going to post this! Thanks for getting there first.
Thank you for this post! FANTASTIC SONG! Transports me immediately! Added to my 80's playlist!
They used that one in Napoleon Dynamite!
This is one of my favorite songs ever.
Agree 👍
ABC's "Be Near Me". Maybe the most 80's sounding song of all time.
Also, the break and guitar solo in "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" makes me feel like I'm about to have the best day ever.
All of my heart..
The Look of Love... (I’m in 1983 in a disco in my head)😆
Ever had the feeling...
Almost broke in two.
Never had that feeling
Now I do oo oo..
👊🏽
@@SarahBethBreck She's great! She knows the words :)
A fine selection. 12" of Tower Of London dub and the ABCMegamix has been in my crate for decades.
I nominate *Out of Touch* by Hall and Oates for the _None More Eighties_ single title.
It is simply impossible to be more 80's than that song was.
"In A Big Country" by Big Country is one of my all-time favorite songs and so overlooked.
A shame the lead singer suicided though...
Thats Big Country's most well known track, hardly overlooked! There are plenty of better & more overlooked Big Country songs. Try Restless Natives.
@@finbarrsaunders Agree. Big Country has a phenomenal song list from which to choose.
Absolutely one of the best songs of the 80s!
Fields of Fire,Look away, East of eden my top
'I Feel For You' by Chaka Khan is my favorite 80s song. It's the best blend of hip hop, funk and pop! The best!!!
Amen!
Ain’t Nobody.. By Chaka Khan ... always puts me in a good mood..
That's a good one.
@@mackermaldrill2656 .. It just puts me in a good mood immediately.. I’ll listen to it at least 5 times.. kinda like caffeine with a energy shot for me.
@@SarahBethBreck It puts me back in time to s specific place. Good for both of us.
There's an 80's song that haunts my dreams. I remember watching it on MTV that someone in my family recorded onto VHS. The piano always gets me and I feel like I'm 6 again watching this video. The song is Stepping Out by Joe Jackson....
Thank you
This was the very first video I saw on MTV. What a great song!
@@MarkBurdette72 It still gets played on Backtrax USA with Kid Kelly! The original 80's show!🤗🤔👍📻
Is she really going out with him? Was better
Gta had it
There is nothing else quite like "Something About You" by Level 42. I also love "Lessons in Love".
Both great tunes, but my All Time Favourite Level 42 Tune is 'Leaving Me Now' (1985) which I remember the first time around at the age of six.
Running in the family is also good
Great freakin tune! One of my favs
They have not any bad song.
World Machine
I'd like to respectfully submit Joe Jackson's Steppin Out.
Respectfully my ass, it's an amazing tune!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I see your Joe Jckson and I raise you a So it Goes by Nick Lowe
Yes yes yes yes
Haunting melody. One the original staples of MTV and then nothing from Joe Jackson. Way to burn out!
"Life in a Northern Town" by the Dream Academy is a great 80's song - one of my favorites from the decade. Although it probably wouldn't work in film or TV.
It was used famously in King of the Hill.
@D Allen "...With John F. Kennedy, and the Beatles."
"The Edge of Forever" from the same album is famously used near the end of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". John Hughes, what a legend...
It had a forlorn feel that at that age I really related to.
“Overkill” by Men at Work is my song for this. Never really cared for it when I was a young kid when it first came out. But I saw a version of Colin Hay doing it with a choir here on RUclips and it blew me away. It so gets lost in the shuffle in their history compared with their two big hits from Business as Usual and it blows both of them away. “Heartbreak Beat” from the Psychedelic Furs is another great one. Man, you could end up thinking of a lot of the great songs from the 80’s.
Colin Hay was on “Scrubs” and did an acoustic version of “Overkill”.
Life in a Northern Town - The Dream Academy still sounds beautiful.
Finally, some one said this one! Unique and ethereal.
thanks for this
Love that song .makes me have flashbacks .
That entire album is genius. Not one weak track.
I've never heard the album. I'll have to look it up. I have only the 45 from when I was a kid!
Icicle works: “whisper to a scream”
The cars: “hello again”
Naked eyes: “promises, promises”
Paul young: “every time you go away”
That entire Naked Eyes album is bomb.
Every time you go away-I will always remember the noise and distortion. His video sucked. Pamela and Roseanna by Toto. Drive by The Cars takes me back
All amazing songs!!!
Whisper To A Scream is probably the best forgotten 80s song.
@@geniusswitch Yes, definitely!
Mr. Mister, Broken wings & Kyrie brings me right back to the good times of HS senior year!
Bingo
Man, most of the Euro stuff from back then is like a twitchy time machine for me that I love to ride. Class of '88 here.
Level 42 is so underrated. So many incredible 80s-defining jams.
Grey's Anatomy used at least one maybe two songs from Level 42. I rediscovered the songs when recently watching old series with my daughter.
Learn more about something about you!

love Lessons In Love especially
Try some of there early albums.Much more better then World Machine?
Backing band for M - Pop Muzik
Since nobody bothered to list them…
5. Pebbles - Mercedes Boy
4. Glass Tiger - Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone
3. Dan Hartman - I Can Dream About You
2. Pointer Sisters - Automatic
1. General Public - Tenderness
You're welcome. 🙂
PS (in response to the some-23 replies): If I made a mistake transcribing this list, it's because the video is a bit hard to follow. Please offer specific corrections and I'll review the video and edit my list. By the way… *_I DIDN'T CHOOSE THIS LIST. IN FACT, I WOULDN'TVE CHOSEN ANY OF THESE SONGS._* I was just taking notes for my own comparative reference and thought I'd share it to save people the trouble.
You're Welcome ! 🙂
#1 was actually LEVEL42
Good list but I would argue general public’s tenderness hasn’t been a forgotten song. Was in the Clueless (mid 90’s) and Just Go With It (2011 I believe) soundtracks. Solid list though.
Tenderness was the ending song in the movie clueless
@@zatchg1212 I think it was in "weird science" too??
Yes to Dan Hartman and pointer sisters.. hell also glass tiger
"Steppin' Out" Joe Jackson. Goosebumps STILL every time.
Stepping’ Out and Breaking Us In Two both ughhh love ❤️
JOE JACKSON was so amazing and I think he maybe gets overlooked too much.
OMG yes!!
He talked about it in a great episode. It was a reveal where he set it up nicely. I had a popular extended video of it the blockers eventually got around to. It's on Vimeo.
Me too :-)
Totally agree with "Something About You". I've been listening to this almost every time I'm in the car for the last 35 years & I have never gotten sick of it. It is perfection.
Can I add “Suddenly last summer by The Motels” and “The First picture of you by the Lotus Eaters”
I always tell my kids that the 80s is the best decade ever
The Motels were great.Martha Davis has an amazing voice
Level 42's "Something about you" has always bring me back to them no matter how much older I get, no matter how much I think my music preferences have changed. That song will always be in my heart and my head. ❤
I agree. A close 2nd, and also highly overrated, for Level 42 is Lessons in Love. This one hits me to the core.
I agree 100%!
Still wear that CD out! Yep, still got CDS.
Sorry, I meant "underrated" lol I love Lessons in Love
Level 42 has some nice amount of great songs. For me probably the best one is "Good man in a storm". Amazing bass line. Micro kid also great, etc.
I was in Marine Corps boot camp back in February '86, when I heard "Something About You" playing on the radio, sitting in the dentist office. It brought a tear to my eye! It got me thru boot camp! After I graduated, on leave, I bought everything I could find on Level 42 and have been a fan to this day!
Chaka Khan - I Feel for You ... it takes me back, it makes me feel good, I can't hate it, don't know if its used in shows, it certainly does get radio air time. This is one of those songs that goes up a notch because of production quality which is something I respect very much. It tells me that someone slaved over every detail and sound effect and not just to juice it up but more importantly not to over do it. R&B is a very special; nothing like it.
When I play I Feel For You, I have to listen to Ain’t Nobody immediately after. From then on I may listen to Sweet Thing, which is a 1976 song. All are great. Surprised I Feel For You only made it to #3
What a mega-smash that song was.
Anything by The Cure: “In Between Days,” “Close to Me,” “Boys Don’t Cry”, and of course “Just Like Heaven”-one of the best songs ever. Also, Duran Duran’s “Save a Prayer.” And so many hauntingly beautiful INXS songs I don’t hear often enough…
Boys don't cry gets quite abit of airplay, not sure about the others
I've been a fan of The Cure since I was a child (Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me was the first album I bought) and they were the last band I saw live before the pandemic, so you won't hear any disagreement from me! ;)
Boys Don't Cry was in the movie "Wedding Singer" :)
Love the chauffeur by Duran Duran
Love Cats.
‘The promise you made’ by Cock Robin
‘Its My Life’ by Talk Talk
‘Save a Prayer’ by Duran Duran
‘Electric Blue’ by Icehouse
‘All of my Heart’ by ABC
just some of my favourite 80s tunes 🙏☘️☘️☘️
ELECTRIC BLUE!!! Yes!!!
Save a prayer is a great song, but my favorite I think is “the chauffeur” by Duran Duran.
Icehouse had some other bangers I forget.
Love ABC
"She's a Beauty" by The Tubes. Forgotten gem of the 80s.
That song kicks ass!
I saw the Tubes in Nashville back in January 2020. Opened up for Loverboy. They still sound great and put on a good show.
@@carolbeville733 very cool.... how did Loverboy sound?
zestydude87 Mike Reno still has the voice! Very impressed.
Miami Vice - "Heart Of Darkness"
The greatest 80's song that no one ever talks about...
"Life In a Northern Town" The Dream Acadamy.
K And that’s not true I just heard a podcast from Nick of the band talking about how it’s been used in dance songs and still has a huge life he makes money with.
Agreed! A lot of people I know never heard of it despite it being used and such. I personally love that song and actually cry most of the time when I hear it :)
Loved that song...I bought the 45 as a teenager back in the 80s
Yes. You may like the remake by Sugarland
That song sucks , its shit , garbage , sonic diarrhea,
The TUBES “ Talk to ya Later” & “ She’s a Beauty!!!! Love Fee Waybill..
They performed in the 1980 film
"Xanadu" & did the theme song
from 1981's "Modern Problems".
The riff in Talk to Ya Later was the brain child of Steve Luthaker.
1989 Michael Penn - No Myth. One of the best songs to come out of the 80s, but hardly ever played anywhere. Except on my stereo.
Neil Schroeder me toooooo
That song was used in the movie Loser and it fit well right at the end.
...and mine lol! I think he shot himself in the foot by naming the song No Myth instead of Romeo In Black Jeans. I remember as a kid wanting to buy that album so bad but kept asking for the song "Romeo In Black Jeans" and sales people had no idea what I was asking for. The days before google, youtube, and smartphones huh? LOL.
Omg I loved that cassette tape! It had that song and one other that I liked....’This and That’ :). Thanks for reminding me!
Great call Neil!..definitely under appreciated!
May I add 'Things can Only get Better" by Howard Jones
Did you just copy and paste a comment. How sad.
New Song and No One Is aTo Blame are great Howard Jones songs too
@@PopeyeBjj86 Maybe he didn't see the other comment about the same song. His post isn't the same word for word. How sad that you find it so sad.🙄🙄
I LOVE this song!
The Night You Murdered Love was their best. Superb song! How did they get so good so quickly?
As a goofy kid growing up in the early 80's I didn't appreciate much 80's music and When I reheard The Motels " Only The Lonely" it holds a permanent spot in my 80's playlists.
Motels and Quarterflash .. Mixed them up a bit, back in the day for some reason... Motels "Take the L out of Lover (and it's over), is a good gem by them.
@@Garysmusic1964
I suggest "Take Me To Heart"
from Quarterflash's follow-up album,
"Take Another Picture"
& The Motels' "Little Robbers"
(title track from the album).
@@Garysmusic1964 👍👍Quarterflash not " harden my heart" but "find another" 👍👍
That Fender Rhodes organ opening riff instantaneously takes me back to the 80s. It's one of those songs that you know by only hearing one note. Classic with incredible vocals.
The Motel's 'Suddenly Last Summer' is now playing in my head. Not complaining though. 💟
I can dream about you, was my Dad's favorite song. He unfortunately passed away in 1993, so this song holds a special place in my heart ❤
“More Than This”. Roxy Music
Haunting, love song.
“Slave To Love” Brian Ferry...even better!
Awesome intro...beautiful arrangement.
Also "Same Old Scene", "Avalon", "Over You" and "Oh Yeah"....
Sexy music
Jimmy5634 if you havent heard Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians cover of More Than This is stripped down and beautiful
Will not disagree with you on Bryan Ferry. Boys and Girls is a perfect album from start to finish.
More Than This should have been the number one mention...I do think Grace Jones' Slave to the Rhythm should have made this list.
The Church "Under the Milky Way" that is a solid song that should be remembered...
skrimpdaddy it lives on ,on the amazing Donnie Darko soundtrack which also has an incredible score by Michael Andrews
It got used in the season 1 finale on HBO Mrs Fletcher. Great tune
It was the first song I thought of when I saw this title.
@@rosssmith8481 have you heard of a band called the script or the paper kites those are feel good bands too
The entire album with "Under the Milky Way" is very good. The Church's "Reptile" is a great song too!
“Under the Milky Way” by the church.still to this day it transport me to another place and time.dreamy lyrics and music you get lost throughout the song.
“Cure ripoff but it’s fantastic and I love it” edit , it’s the other way around. I refer to the subtle motif running beneath the main melody.
@@michaeltaylors2456 Not any kind of a "Cure ripoff". If you're talking about Lovesong, that was released a year after UTMW. If you're talking about the overall Church sound, they very much had their own thing.
If I remember well, it was used in a Miami Vice episode
@@michaeltaylors2456 yes if you listen to any other song by the Church so not the Cure. I love both bands and there is a very distant sound difference.
John Powers I’m really referring to the modulated guitar melody lifted from the cures Love Song
Another 80s classic that gets overlooked is "Electric Blue" by Icehouse.
"Crazy" by Icehouse is one of my favorite songs of the decade.
Luke Million Electric Blue cover
ruclips.net/video/Rcqz-CiyQYk/видео.html
I loathe that song. When I was a kid I used to sing "It's all over you, Electric Spew"
yes!!!
It also is one of the videos with overly enthusiastically smiling drummers that were popular then.
Tears for Fears- “Head Over Heels” How come nobody (except for Donnie Darko) talks about that song?
Everbody hates Chris
That's A Classic !
Great song
I have many days wondering whether Head over Heels is a better song than Everybody Wants To Rule The World. It's just that good
I do, I like it more than Shout, but not more than Broken!
"Something About You" is by far my favorite 80's song of all time, no joking. That bass line and chord progression is incredible. The perfect song like you said.
Joseph Benda One of my favourite songs :) I’m a fan of them and that’s my favourite of theirs.
Lunatic Fringe - Red Rider
She Blinded me with Science - Thomas Dolby
Breakout - Swing Out Sister
Why Me - Planet P
Wind him up - Saga
Chris Petrillo: Red Rider also did Light in the Tunnel (prelude)/Human Race.. A lot of people forget this one from 1983. Wind Him Up goes well with On the Loose.. I always listen to those back to back.. Both are excellent tunes. The rest of your list also looks excellent.
I looove Breakout!
Saga is my favorite band ever. I have traveled from NY TO CANADA TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC to see them play!
“Under The Milky Way” by The Church. Still on my playlist.
Awesome song, awesome.
One of the greatest songs of any era.
My band plays that song.
Hauntingly beautiful.
North, South , Eat, West makes my heart sing.
Love Level 42. "Something About You" is ageless.
That album is awesome 🔥🔥
Lessons In Love is amazing too!
Yeah.. That Too
Lessons in Love is sooo freakin' good!
LOVE STILL
“Wouldn’t It Be Good” by Nik Kershaw!!!
Love Nik Kershaw! Excellent tune.
In college I was working at the student run station - we went FIVE CUTS DEEP on that Nik Kershaw album, "The River." Heavy rotation for almost an entire year.
I know about that song from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories...lol.
DEFINITELY!!!
I had a progressive english teacher who played Nik's second album to the class and made us examine the lyrics - brilliant
How about "Love, My Way" by the Psychedelic Furs
How about "Heaven" by the furs
Don't forget the ghost in you and pretty in pink!
Literally the best Psychedelic Furs song!
Mark Peterson love that guys voice from Psych furs!
The entire Forever Now album is perfect from start to close
I’d add Heart and Soul by T’Pau and The Sun Always Shines on TV by ah-ha. BTW, I love Level 42. Lessons in Love is another great one.
Yes! I always preferred The Sun Always Shines on TV over Take On Me.
Carole Decker’s voice was distinctly 1980-something wasn’t it? And as for the Level 42 reference as soon as that first guitar chord hums you always know Lessons in Love is beginning!!!
Life in a Northern Town by Dream Academy and Welcome to the Boomtown by David & David are two of my all time forgotten 80's songs! (but I have many)
Welcome to the Boomtown!! A true hidden gem!!
Jason, Excellent choices. So on point. 👍👍
Should have read further down the comments. I just posted "Boomtown" as a missing hidden gem.
Oh yeah welcome to the boomtown.
Life in a Northern Town still gives me goosebumps.
I think "I Can Dream About You" is the quintessential 80's song.
It is pretty good.
Great 80's movie too !
One of my favorite songs from my favorite 80’s year 1984.
Been in radio 42 years and that is one of the handful of songs I never got tired of hearing.
It was a favorite me and my dad loved listening...this and "Nightshift" along with nearly all Phil Collins. Good memories....miss my dad he passed in 2014 from cancer.❤
"Promises Promises" Naked Eyes and "Don't Answer Me" Alan Parsons Project
Promises Promises!! I like that song!! ❤️
Yea, both of songs are great. Hands down.
Promises Promises is the song that exemplifies the decade for me. Kinda post new wave, early Romantic movement with a lot of electronic sounds, yet brimming with emotion and feeling. That guitar solo and the synth pad underneath could be a museum exhibit of how I feel most of the time.
Eye in The Sky
I just found out Allan Parsons was the “equipment guy” at Abby Road studios when The Beatles recorded “Abby Road”, and he set up all the gear for their famous rooftop performance.
Oh, he was also the sound engineer on a seldom heard of little album by some obscure garage band from England. I believe the LP was titled: “Dark Side of the Moon”, or something like that. I mean, seriously!? I always assumed it was a Bob Ezrin.
"Something About You" captures everything that is positive about the 80s. What a time to grow up in that decade!
The Waterboys The whole of the moon is a stunning hidden gym. I don’t even know where to begin to describe how awesome that song is
I agree.
The whole album is awesome
Ronan Keating does a great cover of it too
The Waterboys were a light in the darkness of the synth heavy decade.
Great song. Was listening to it today
It was played as a prelude before the start of U2's world wide Joshua Tour last year. Thats how i first heard of this hidden gem.
The Human League's "Human" is stunning
Oh yeah, "Human" is a great song.
Very true... I was waking up that song for a very long time.
My all-time favorite
@@justinrussell851 Me too!
Cole Fortier not a forgotten song at all tho
"Saved By Zero" from The Fixx, "I Can't Wait" by Nu Shooz, "Get The Balance Right" from Depeche Mode
Yes!
Saved by Zero: Real Genius soundtrack!
"I Can't Wait" by Nu Shooz one of my all time favs.
The Fixx did some great work back then.
Absolutely....The Fixx had so many awesome song. One of the most overlooked band of the 80's.
I've always loved "Dance Hall Days" by Wang Chung. So underappreciated. That song was also briefly featured in "Bachelor Party" starring Tom Hanks and "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion" starring Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow.
That is a standout song, without a doubt. I remember hearing it and wondering how they came up with the musical concept. None of these were my personal taste in music, but sounds like this unavoidable and defined the attitude of the decade. Great choice!
GREAT song!
I loved Dance Hall Days too. But people only want to hear Everybody have fun tonight, which is good too.
Love that song. An interesting reggae-tinged cover of it was done in 2016 by Theophilus London.
@@janejones7638 thank you for reminding me! ( goes back on playlist) you know?
Colin Hays cover of his own song Over Kill ,from the Sroundtrack to Scubs is one I just want to mention for no reason
Nik Kershaw - Wouldn’t it be good.
Fantastic song.
I had almost forgotten about that one, then heard it again a few months ago. Great song!
The accoustic version is awesome as well if you've not heard it
Except it promotes suicide.
Omg I love Nik Kershaw I found the tape two days after my wife died.
@@tunafish1689 I don't think so
Here's a rare one: "Don't Disturb This Groove" by Th System. The next is "The Perfect Way" by Scritti Politti (spelling) . Those are two under appreciatr radio charting songs from the 80's that included music videos.
Scritti Politti.. had that cassette.. I swear I thought I was the only person who remembered them.
I'm pretty sure I have Don't Disturb This Groove on 45 from when I was a kid. Great song!
Uh I was obsessed with Scritti Politti back in the day!
Big in Japan is another one
Two of my favs
The 80s makes me think of Howard Jones' "No one is to blame".
Same! He was very under rated; that song has some of the best lyrics of pain that I have ever heard.
Daryl Braithwaite...Let me be..
HoJo had a good song/music video combo, with What Is Love.
HoJo was a hit machine
Oh yeah! I just got goosebumps on my arms thinking of that song! Good one!
Kate Bush Running Hounds of Love album...Running up the Hill, Cloudbusting, Waking the Witch, Hello Earth. The whole album is haunting and amazing!
@Tip Toe Agreed!!!
💯💯💯💯💯
It's a work of genius
@@AndrewSowerby wish Kate would create a new album!

Two of the greatest 80's slow songs that really pluck those emotional chords are "Lady in Red" by Chris de Burgh and "Drive" by The Cars
Over used!
Drive.. loved it❤️
"Lady In Red" is actually in my list of least favorites. The lyrics are beautiful, but the rest... I might grow to like it, though. My teen has learned the songs in my list and plays them for me often 🤦🏻♀️😂
My favorite forgotten 80's song is "Catch Me I'm Falling" by Real Life. Theres so much energy in that song that its incredible, and it immediately gets stuck in my head as soon as I hear it. It only reached no. 40 on the Hot 100 though somehow. It's a shame.
Nice one. Great song.
I still love Head Over Heels by Tears for Fears!
Great song. Tears for Fears has live concert footage on youtube. At must see.
The whole album "Songs of the big chair" is beautiful, love it!
That's a masterpiece!
"This is my four leaf clover..." That whole album is fantastic!
Me too, but it received a very nice placement in Donnie Darko.
Oh man, that Dan HArtman song... So true! I worked in a record store in the 80s in Philadelphia. I hear that song and I'm there again! Thanks!!!
"Ride Like the Wind" - Christopher Cross.
Intro Riff... Simple yet.. Beautiful.
The outro guitar solo towards the fade out just gets me going. I wish it kept going forever.
I Still prefer the saxon version
goddam "christopher cross" - love that song
“Ba da da da
Ba ba ba baaa
Ba da da da
Ba Ba Ba baaaaa……”
Sailing is also a great song as well
I'd recommend Swing Out Sister's "Breakout" (really holds up decades later), Icehouse's "Electric Blue", and maybe The Other Ones' "Holiday". Truly hidden, all three of them.
Wow I just left a comment about “Electric Blue”! Love that song, and “Breakout” too lol
Plus: Basia, ''Promises''
Electric Blue and Crazy...so good.
Yeah... Breakout was one of my favorites !
I agree about Swing Out Sister. I love that song. It's always been a fave of mine with such a good positive message. It came out about the time I was moving from being *only* a fan of R&B/soul and hip hop to being much more inclusive with my music, and it was perfect.
I love and miss the 80’s. I listen to a radio station that only plays 80’s music. I graduated high school in 1983
Also an '83 graduate, and I am still amazed at the music that still holds up today (The Fixx, early INXS, The Human League, Duran Duran, Billy Squier, etc, etc, etc.). It was a magical time that I go back to every time I hear an early '80's song that I remember listening to those many years ago.
Class of 84 here
'88 here
Missing You by John Waite will always have a place in my heart. Also, anything by the Eurythmics. Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, phenomenal!
John Waite, in general, has a special place in my heart. I am back in time every time I hear the Babys.
@@kellidinit3725 Ditto! One of the best voices in rock.
My favorite 80’s song is Major Tom - Peter Schilling.
Good call. Love a story in a song.
The different story by Schilling too is a great song.
Genau! Nür auf Deutsch!
my husband´s boss is German and the other day hubby was listening to that song at work , his boss stormed in to say he bought the single in his teens and loves it
it was in Atomic Blond lolz
good song though
The Pet Shop Boys “What have I done to deserve this” and Tears for Fears “Head Over Heels”.
Todd Humphrey Why Don’t We Live Together? by Pet Shop Boys
Head over heels is extremely popular thanks to donny darko and its cult following.
_What Have I Done to Deserve This?_ is one of my favorite songs of all time. I literally just posted this in response to another comment, just before I saw yours.
@@GreyFox001 I was gone say... Head Over Heels always makes me think of that Darko steadcam shot.
Yes to both of these. Although for me THE Pet Shop Boys song was Suburbia. I loved that song in the 80's and I love it now.
“Steppin out” Joe Jackson.
This is an amazing song!
YES! In my top 100 of all time! Love Joe Jackson...
On my playlist at work
Agreed. Belongs in top 10 most underrated, overlooked songs.
Absolutely one of the best '80s songs!
"Digging Your Scene" by The Blow Monkeys. One of the best sax songs of the 80's!!! Let's not forget some of the songs by The Flirts or Book of Love. Wow, the 80's had all genre(s) of music. It all just came spilling out in that decade.
And, anybody remember, “Mexican Radio” by Wall of Voodoo and, “Just Got Lucky” by JoBoxers? And, “I Got You” by Split Enz?
I thought that I was the only one still listening to Mexican radio
Dude, what would the 80's be without Split Enz? It gave us the best band ever.... Crowded House!
Three great songs
I do... What does he say?
Just Got Lucky!!! Brilliant song 💯
“Things can only get better” - Howard Jones
“One thing leads to another” - The Fixx
“Method of Modern Love” - Hall and Oates
“The Warrior” - Scandal
“When the world is running down, you make the best of what’s still around” - the Police
“Frame by Frame”- King Crimson.
Howard Jones, no one is to blame
Human Being yes Patty Smyth The Warrior has been on my work out playlist this week!
Great list! We have the stories of a few of these songs coming soon...
!!!!!!!!!
@@ProfessorofRock your channel is really really terrific. Keep up the great work. I love the Dan Hartman song big time.
“Promise” by when In Rome still gets me in the old heartstrings!
I always wondered if When in Rome were the Pez People from The Big Picture.
The Promise. And Yes. A beautiful pop song.
Best one hit wonder. Love that song
So good.
It was in Napoleon Dynamite to great effect!
Yes, thank you! "I Can Dream About You" by the late, great Dan Hartman is, by far, one of the most brilliant 80's anthems I've ever heard. Every time I listen to it, I get very nostalgic, despite me not even having been born or having grown up in the 1980s.
such a jam
Awesome tune,as soon as i heard it again,i knew where i was ,what car i had, where i ŵas living, this song literally smacked me in the face with fantastic memories of my teenage years in the 80,s
I guess I always thought this was a Hall & Oates song… my bad…
@@Martini24x7 H&O did record it, and I like their version better, but that’s the soul in me!
The Prof covers this in another video, but it’s a song Dan Hartman wrote for Hall and Oates that they didn’t pick up, so he recorded it in their style and had a massive hit
Shatterd Dreams by Johnny Hates Jazz could be in this list.
Tony Lee Glenn great song! It’s so underrated! I still listen to that song regularly!
Very well-crafted and recorded. Love the bass line and tone-
Tony Lee Glenn Fabulous!
Sure "Shattered Dreams" could be on this list... because this is a shitty shitty list. Christ. I remember reading Rolling Stone Magazine's review of Johnny Hates Jazz "debut" with the question: "why does Johnny hate jazz?" Because these idiots blow chunks as musicians... the FIELD they are supposedly in... what a STUPID SONG with a sorry ass weak repetitive chorus... blah blah blah "shattered dreams, shattered dreams"... what WHINY BLOWHARD song.
@@hotelfoxtrot4979 you're a bit of a misery I reckon.
It's My Life - Talk Talk
Robert DeStefanis absolutely!
Amazing song musically and lyrics are great
Life's What You Make It - Talk Talk
No Doubt covered it on there Greatest Hits release.
Talk Talk has several AMAZING songs!
I agree, Level 42’s - Something About You is an incredible song
That album was fantastic.
@@brettscott8288 Also 'Sowing The Seeds Of Love'; very good lyrics.
I agree. I don't like anything else I've heard by Level 42, but I LOVE "Something About You"
Just the other day, I told my wife that it was one of my favourite 80's songs. Funny that I just stumbled on this vid
Yep, this was a huge song. Another song I don't remember seeing in movies was 'Its My Life" by Talk Talk. Not Stefani.
"Slow Hand" by The Pointer Sisters is one of my all-time favorite songs. It's sublime.
Or Hi Gloss's "You'll never know" from 1981
The ENTIRE “Streets of Fire” soundtrack is amazing!
Agreed! It’s rare to meet anyone who knows the movie, let alone loves the soundtrack! I have it on digital, cd and vinyl formats I love it so much!
Of course.....Jim Steinman was a genius!! Such a great movie and the music..........just, wow! Such a rare thing for a movie like that to be rooted in reality but transcends to mythical proportions in feeling fairytale-esque. Blessings!
Blue Shadow should be a much more well known song! A stunning rock masterpiece.
@@rjasonw74 oh man! How did I forget about that song!?
"The Promise" - When In Rome
We have the story behind this song coming soon on Professor of Rock VEVO.
I love that song
Then you need to check out Sturgill Simpson’s cover of “The Promise”. Very different and still the same
Wasn't that song used to great effect in "Napoleon Dynamite"? But, yes...excellent call as it's been largely ignored.
I love that song, very underrated
"I can't wait" - Nu Shooz
Did you listen to the extended version of that one?? Blows the radio edit out of the water.
It was like “Tainted Love”; it wasn’t a huge hit until it was remixed.
5Rounds Rapid The extended version with “Where Did Our Love Go” right? That version is great.
As an aside, listen to the extended version of “Numbers” by Soft Cell.
Manfred Mann Yes. My wife, who hates covers and synthpop, loves that version of Tainted Love.
I freaking love this song
Level 42 is CRIMINALLY underrated. Amazing vocals, and the great 80s accompaniment
M-Pop Muzik
Gary Numan-Cars
These were both released in 1979, but were ahead of their time, because they sound so 80’s
Cars is a banger! Listen to it once a week at least.
I'm pretty sure that I have one of those "Songs of the 80's" CDs with "Pop Muzik" on it.
Conversely, I would've sworn that "Mary Jane's Last Dance" was an 80's song, but it didn't come out until a few years into the 90's.
I guess.
@@TheSuburban15 oh Tom Petty song
@@tylerdurden9132solid banger ! I crank it to 11 everytime
Radioactive by The Firm. Twilight Zone by Golden Earring. The Politics of Dancing by Re-Flex. Vienna by Ultravox. Gotta think of one more...
The Firm was a great superband.Egos left at the door & had a good time? Imagine if they release them jam sessions or playing each other's bands song's? Or on tour? Imagine Playing Stairway to Heaven w/o Plant?
nope...but Satisfaction Guaranteed by the Firm is incredible...
Oooo Twilight Zone. What a gem
"Things Can Only Get Better", by Howard Jones.
Or "New Song" by Howard Jones
“No one is to Blame” by Howard Jones
Everlasting Love is another gem.
I agree no one to blame is way better hojo song
First cassette tape/album i ever bought! (Dream into Action) all great songs.
Another Forgotten song is
Laura Brannigan “Self Control “ ✨❤️
Agree. When many people think of Laura Brannigan, they think of "Gloria". But I feel "Self Control" was really her best song.
Agreed..it's been on my RUclips rotation last 12 months in Lockdown and Covid restrictions
"Self Control" made it into my "Kick-ass 80s Songs" playlist. Speaking of which, I really need to record that onto a cassette...
Another great song. Love it ❤️
Ti Amo was another gem
Right on Track by The Breakfast Club
Silent Running by Mike and the Mechanics
Broken Wings by Mr. Mister
West End Girls by Pet Shop Boys
The Sun Always Shines on TV by Ah Ha
Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush
My Top 5
Someone recently remade Running up that hill. I think it was Ava Max. She treated it with respect.
West end girl, and something about you, were both on the air, spring, summer, 1986.
Ooh Silent Running and Broken Wings!!!
Damn, I forgot all about Silent Running. West End Girls is one of those songs I can actually "feel". The intro takes me to another place.
Some trivia, The Breakfast Club wrote the song "Each time you break my heart - Nick Kamen" for Madonna then she gave it to Nick Kamen.
Heart and soul T'Pau. Should be on this list.
James Mincks one of my favourite songs of all time.
SUCH a good song. Fantastic chorus layers.
Bridge of Spies by T'Pau is a solid 80s power ballad as well: ruclips.net/video/jxQZnw_u1mE/видео.html
Hell yes
Long version, plz lol
"Take me home" phil collins, walk in the night and listen this song is on of the most beautiful experiences of all my life.
PCreplayer PC replayer I totally agree, also it’s my favorite Phil Collins song!
No jacket required is one the best albums
The devil takes many forms
"The Riddle" by Nik Kershaw deserves more attention than it gets, it's a whole movie of a song.
Aaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!
DON’T FORGET “WIDE BOY” still have the 45 single!
STELLAR SONG!
I won't let the sun go down on me is a great song.
Such interesting chord progressions

“Sowing the Seeds of Love” by Tears for Fears.
One of my fave songs ever.
Great song...from the nineties

The epic opening of Aldo Nova's Fantasy.
leopard pants
Yes.
So, so glad to see Level 42 on here. They are incredibly underrated. They have countless number of near perfect songs, if not perfect.
Leaving me now is haunting.
It’s Over too, a song which really captures the pain of the end of a relationship
Perfect Way by Scritti Politti. I love Mercedes Boy- that was one of my JAMS along with Al B Sure. Love Level 42 as well, the lead singer reminds me of Joe Jackson.
Der kommisar, escape club - the wild wild west, sly fox - lets go all the way. The fixx - Red skies.
I agree with those picks!
Love all your picks, but that song Wild Wild West was just horrible!!!! LOL I don't know why but it always made my stomach turn lol. Along with that song Walk The Dinosaur. HATED IT lol. Where there any songs in the 80s that totally drove you crazy? Not just disliked, but drove you mad? lol
@@mrhoffame haha ok, i'll switch it out for another regge-ish song , electric avenue, Eddy Grant's a winner for sure?
Der Kommisar by After the Fire is excellent! I play that whenever I'm writing or reading.
Shit I forgot about Der kommisar and sly foxd
Love Is A Stranger by The Eurythmics. Annie Lennox is stunning.
Love love love this song
She has such an otherworldly quality❤️
I just recently rediscovered this song, and LOVE it!
How about, “Electric Blue,” by Icehouse? Or Someone Somewhere(In Summertime) by Simple Minds. Those are both incredible songs
Patrick King agreed!! Two of my faves
I’m a big Icehouse fan, but most of their stuff I like was not that well known on US radio in the 80’s. “The Kingdom” “No Promises”, “Great Southern Land”, and “Paradise” are some of my all-time favorites along with “Icehouse”.
@@extantiaThey were and are still big in Australia, one of the few bands that can still play live, cleanly and accurately. Went to one of there gigs 12 months ago, out door concert on the river in rural Australia, bought the crowd to a crescendo. Was fantastic!!!
Stu eey I love hearing that! Thank you for sharing. “Measure for Measure” is still one of my all time favorite albums. I’m very keen on Iva Davies’ vocal and songwriting skills as well as Guy Pratt’s bass playing on that album.
Wow ! thanks for reminding me of Icehouse !
"The Night Owl" by the Little River Band
"Only Time Will Tell" by Asia
"Turn Me Loose" by Loverboy

Robert Michalscheck, great song!
Almost anything Crowded house is great!
And anything Split Enz ( the band that the crowdies came out of.) especially Message to my girl.
“I Can Dream About You” was “Our” song. I was dating someone and we couldn’t always be together, but she said whenever she heard this song it made her think of me, and she’d listen to it before she went to bed every night.
Great stuff as always!
