I remember when that song came out in late 1998. It was a breath of fresh air. When I first heard it it sounded like a guy influenced by Todd Rundgren and 90s Britpop. I was thinking that this is the direction indie rock/pop needed to go to appeal to America on a large scale.

Just got out of the Army and moved back to my parents home from living in Italy and deploying to hot zones. This song helped me transition to being a civilian after 8 years and a some serious injuries. Those that served will know. It was not easy. I am an Airborne Infantry soldier and I wanted to give everyone the middle finger! Sitting in my car after a long day dealing with civilians and not knowing if I could handle it, I would crank this song and enjoy the music and the vibe as I understood the punkness of the song and the middle finger the singer was throwing out there. Fun Fact: Veterans aren’t the only people who’ve experienced hardships. Get over yourself, soldier boy. PS: You signed up for it, quit being a whiny baby.
@LuckyCharms777 Wow. 'Til you are staring down the people you have been told are the enemy, and you know either you pull, or it's you on the ground, you don't have a bloody clue. This is the theme of Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark" - a favorite of mine. I've gotten what I thought I wanted many times, and sometimes DID have that integrity. But. Sometimes not, and thereby hangs a tale or two.
This was always a “background” song to me. I liked its catchiness but never really delved into the lyrics. Thank you Professor for once again opening my eyes, and ears, to the value of music and what it has to say to us.
What a great story. I have so many great memories mixed in with this song. When you said he co-wrote “Game of Love” I realized immediately that both songs evoke similar emotions and that’s because this guy’s fingerprints are on both. Really cool. I’m glad this kid didn’t stick around to be tortured by touring and interviews until his love of music was destroyed BUT….I can’t help but be saddened thinking about the great catalog of wonderful hits that could have been. His voice is One of One. Unique and emotional…I don’t think it’s a coincidence that people like Joni Mitchell and Santana were drawn to him.
I still hear this song on local FM pop stations and SiriusXM’s 90’s on 9 all the time and I’ve never gotten tired of it. My tongue still gets twisted trying to sing the last verse at the end of the song. Good job Adam.❤
As always thank you for anything from the 90's Professor. I turned 19 in 1999 and with my 20's on the horizon, this was my last teenage anthem! Rock on sir!
And I turned 29 in 1999! December 31, 1999 was a really, really surreal day. I remember watching the television all day, including a concert by Jean-Michel Jarre at the pyramids at Giza, and an interview with Arthur C. Clarke about whether 2000 or 2001 was the official start of the new millennium. Also, drinking beer pretty much the entire day, wondering whether the Y2K Bug was going to destroy civilization as we knew it.
I've heard the story behind The New Radicals and of the song, "You Get What You Give", but I'm super excited to get a more in-depth story from you, Professor!
YES, love this song. I've been wondering for years about the story behind You Get What You Give. It's aged finer than wine and the lyrics hit so different now
Such a great Song. I love this show how it's always reminding me of these special lightning in a Bottle songs u don't usually think of unless they pop onto the Radio or a movie or lately without those as much, This Show. Soon as I saw the silhouette of the hat ..I knew what song that was.. it's one of my all-time favorite songs... It's a great pick me up song when not all is well. ..and damn I miss the days of the malls.. thanks again
I never heard this song until maybe 2006. It must not have gotten a lot of airtime in certain markets. I had to go digging to find out who and what I had just heard.
Was just thinking how jealous I am of Adam's shirt collection then he announces that collaboration! Cool, will definitely check it out. This song is a perfect example of me not even knowing what i didn't know--had not listened closely enough to the lyrics. The story of him hearing his song on someone's radio is so cool. Thank you Professor!
I love the whole album, sure this is the best track but there are no skips on it. Gregg Alexander is certainly a mysterious character, very few interviews since the New Radicals and yet, he's been able to keep busy in the music industry
I always remembered this as one of the high points of the nineties. The groove, the drum sound, the vintage feel which at the same time sounds fresh, that piano and of course the vocals. Simply a stand-out track of the decade, of any decade, really
I find it such a coincidence that you said that Prince's Purple Rain is what inspired him to want to be a musician, because every time I hear this song, when the guitar solo comes in at around 2 :50, I start hearing Prince's guitar solo from the Live Aftershow 1988 version of Just My Imagination
As a bassist I have always applauded the bass line for this song. It is proof that bass lines do not have to be in your face to push the flow of the song.
Thank you. Gregg, for me, is one of THE overlooked and under rated singer/songwriter/Producers of all time. He was inspired by the best, he honours the best songwriting, and 'plays the game' of the music industry the way I wants. Also... Just like Film Director's, he himself is a true 'auteur'. His songwriting signatures are all over the songs he has written for other artists to perform... from Texas, The Hollies, Keira Knightley, Ronan Keating, Mel C, INXS, Julian Lennon, and as you listed Adam, many more. He's up there for me with Goffin/King, Neil Diamond, SAW... Are you able to interview him sometime in the future please? I'd love to hear how he approaches writing a song, what inspires/influences him when writing, and who are the songwriters he's respected from a child. With an added Top 5 songs that he loves from the 50s through to the present day. Brilliant, and long overdue, upload Adam, but hugely grateful that you have included this into your hugely impressive catalogue. Three chords and the truth indeed, Adam ❤
Interestingly Greg left the JW’s and became a “stick it to the man” icon, Prince, who started it all for him, became a JW and significantly toned down his music.
Omg, I had forgotten about this song. But it is a timeless bottle of lightening truth drop...still perfect and revelant in this very day! I keep a playlist of older songs full of truth drops that i was too young and blind to fully take in at the time of their release...but now i hear the words loud and clear these days, and i play thru the whole list on the daily while I'm at work. Reminds me that I am not so alone in seeing the current reality I am living in. These songs seem to reach thru the timeline to teach and comfort me in these pretty dark days. Like a time traveling miracle. Thanks for this reminder...I couldn't wait to add it to my list!!❤❤❤❤

I did a research about Greg and about this song myself about two years back so it's interesting how you scraped up all the info there is. Really great job👍 Wish you did an interview with the Man himself. That would be awesome. I also love "Someday we'll know" aslo an amazing song. Greg is a genius. Such a shame he gave up the game. I understand him but still.. wish he did at least one more album.
Wow! Great video & song breakdown mate. Thanks for explaining & finally solving what all those lyrics mean. I've always luved the positive & uplifting vibe this song has always held! 🇦🇺
Hey Adam, the term "frenemies" was used back in 1953 by Walter Winchell, suggesting the relationship between the US and Russia be considered "frenemies". Anyhow, keep up the great work. I look forward to seeing your videos, the best music history channel ever! Also, have you done one on Ben Folds or Ben Folds Five?
Great segment. I kept waiting for you to mention that Danielle Brisebois of All in the Family was part of New Radicals. She didn't play on this song (though I think she's briefly in the video), but that connection never ceases to amaze me.
Talk about a man true to himself, his story reminds me of the song I Did it My Way. Great song that he could be still performing to this day if he chose to instead he chose himself. Amazing, great episode professor!
Great message in the lyrics for sure but this song musically is fantastic too! The instrumental components in this song come together like a fine wine. Just a great great song all around. Thanks Prof!
COOL! One of those rare not my Jamm but I actually LIKE songs!! It's one thing to have the passion,,, it's another to take charge and GO Do what it takes!! Good for him and Great Story Adam! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼
Ear Worm. Teenage Symphony to God. There is a supernatural vibe in this song that hits the soul. When this song/video came out I was well into adulthood, way too old to be wearing those comically giant flared pants the kids were sporting back then, but this song hit me, too, just as hard. I never bothered to search out who did it. I didn't want to spoil the magic by knowing everything. At that time I was obsessing over Jason Molina and Songs:Ohia which was a different vibe of light in the darkness, but equally magical. I forget how long ago I heard 'YGWYG' again, but it hit me again uplifting the soul just as it did in '98-'99. This is one of the few songs I will listen to twice in a row. Eventually it finds me again and I will feel it. It will be played at my funeral. Thank you Professor for filling in the blanks 25 years later.
I think he was involved in writing most of the songs on the Begin Again soundtrack, which includes Lost Stars, and he recorded two songs for it under a pseudonym. Love that soundtrack. It’s one of my favorites. And I love You Get What You Give, too. I hope he keeps writing, even if he isn’t recording himself.
I remember first hearing this song while vacationing in Mexico, Christmas 1998 and loving it and then going back home to America and it was a hit. This is my favorite 90s song and one of my all-time favorites.
Alright, you've finally done the New Radicals. Now you HAVE to do Wheatus "Teenage Dirtbag". The story behind the band, the recording of the song, and particularily the lost master recording of the song are so interesting. Please Adam, not only is it a great "Bottled Lightning" song and story, but both the band and the song have garnered quite the cult following.
I totally respect his honesty!! You absolutely see artists and bands still touring that haven't cared at all for years. If you don't love it anymore get out!!
I joined a New Radicals forum in 2002 and 22 years later we are all still together and they are some of my best friends! The New Radicals have 2 new songs out and a good one is "Murder On the Dance Floor!" Great song!
One of my all time favorites for sure...when this released, I was in the Navy based in SoCal, and I would just drive around up and down the PCH with the windows down and this CD playing...so many great tunes on this one that you could probably do a whole episode on the entire album. Though I am primarily a metal/rock guy, I have always appreciated well crafted pop music, and this sits at the summit for me. Thanks for covering it!
A long-time favorite of mine, and one of the greatest videos ever. Though she didn't play on "You Get What You Give", Alexander's main keyboardist/percussionist and co-songwriter both on his earlier albums and in the New Radicals touring band was child actress Danielle Brisebois, best known for her role on "All in the Family" and its follow-up "Archie Bunker's place" as Archie Bunker's niece. She also wrote the bottled lightning song "Unwritten" for Natasha Bedingfield.

Sometimes, we do get what we want just to discover it's not what we thought. Wonder how many have the integrity to walk away?
☕️☕️🎶🎵🎶
Thanks!
This is the theme of Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark" - a favorite of mine. I've gotten what I thought I wanted many times, and sometimes DID have that integrity. But. Sometimes not, and thereby hangs a tale or two.
Yup!
Thanks for watching!
A very enduring tune. I hear it all the time as well.
Know what you mean. That last verse is the best part but so difficult to get
Right? It’s a hard one to sing.
@@stephenbrown4211Put it on loop; you’ll get it. LOVE this song.
Awesome!
Thanks for sharing!
Getting old!
This is one of the best songs from the 90’s. I had it on replay in my car forever. Still listen to it and “Carolina” a lot.
Once in a very long while, pop culture gets something right. Number one both on the chart and in our hearts 🫶✌️
Gotta admit this song always filled me positive vibes. Didn't realize it was a dark as all that.
Gregg also had a writers credit on The Gane Of Love by Santana
He also wrote Murder on the Dance Floor.
I know this band personally and Danielle. This song was and still is strong. What's strange is I am listening to this song right now!
OK, that's a wild coincidence. 😊
I thought he might talk a little more about Danielle, given her acting history. Love this song and can really identify with Gregg.
@stanjames4031 Me too. But you know Men.
This song was my battle song for quite some time back then. A great one.
To me, "you get what you give" captured the optimism of the late 1990's and stands as one of the top songs from that era.
Huh?
Top?? Hahahaha. HARDLY
Love this song. Can't turn it off when it comes on. He might not have liked grunge, but the song had that ethic.
Great song. Thank you for covering it.
I've heard the story behind The New Radicals and of the song, "You Get What You Give", but I'm super excited to get a more in-depth story from you, Professor!
This is my favorite anti-pop, pop song. So brilliantly satirical and sarcastic.
YES, love this song. I've been wondering for years about the story behind You Get What You Give. It's aged finer than wine and the lyrics hit so different now
I totally agree!
Such a great Song. I love this show how it's always reminding me of these special lightning in a Bottle songs u don't usually think of unless they pop onto the Radio or a movie or lately without those as much, This Show.
P.O.R has more passion and musical knowledge than a whole group of Music Heads. Rock On Brother.
That's what I love about your song break downs, Heard this song hundreds of times, knew it had some cool lines, but never really listen that closely or make out all the words, great channel
I really liked their song Someday We'll Know as well.
I agree 100% with you. That should have been a full fledged single.
going to have to try that song when I can.
That was my other favorite song from their album.
Agreed!
@@MrAmtrak457 FOr sure!
“You Get What You Give” had such nice non-grungy production, good retro- so much like Todd Rundgren, I loved it!
Great song with lots of meaning and depth, so rare today.
Record labels are the downfall of music.
I am going to have to give this song a whole new listen! Thanks Professor
New Radicals! I loved that song! Nice to hear about them! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
If you remember the stale gun in baseball cards, you'll love this channel
Good one!

"Sorry, Teach...I didn't know the gum was loaded!" "You didn't know Freshen Up was loaded with flavor?"

Really good video on a great underappreciated song. It's a rare pop-ish song that I actually like.
Thanks for sharing!
Love the Scooters in the video❤
I feel the album as a whole takes you on a journey…starting with Mother We Just Can’t Get Enough gets you out of your chair and sets a mood for what’s about to come ❤
Soon as I saw the silhouette of the hat ..I knew what song that was.. it's one of my all-time favorite songs... It's a great pick me up song when not all is well. ..and damn I miss the days of the malls.. thanks again
this guy is so famous and talented, ive never heard of him or his songs
and i lived through the 70-80-and 90s
and im into music..
Do it!
I respect a guy who does something and figures out it is not for him even after being successful with it!
The New Radicals' You Get What You Give sounds like a World Party tune--a genre I consider Pop Psychedelia.
COol!
yehit always reminds me of ship.of fools
The first few times I heard it I thought that it was a new World Party song. I was surprised when the DJ said that it was the New Radicals.
It sounds so cool.

Wow.
Same 🙋🏾♂️
As a bassist I have always applauded the bass line for this song. It is proof that bass lines do not have to be in your face to push the flow of the song.
Thank you for covering this group. I’m still upset that they put out one perfect album from start to finish and then walked away.
Wasn't a group....just him. No bands members at all
Awesome video, a truly brilliant, uplifting song. That is why I love this channel. Great job Adam
One of My all time favorite albums. Never gets old
Cool!
Prince also grew up a JW.
Wow, what a story. I was pretty much an anti-pop guy when this song was released, but this video has given me a new respect for it. Cheers, Adam!
Awesome to hear! Thanks for watching.
hey professor rock! biiiiig thank you for covering new radicals sooooo much. even when i am at my lowest with bipolar this song just picks me up and makes me wanna take over the world with positivity. love ya. aussie gi.
Definitely one of the best songs of the '90s, and the video was filmed at Staten Island Mall, here in New York! Have a great day! - Dave
He controlled his own fate in an industry where most artists don't or can't control a damn thing. That makes him even more bad ass.
Excellent take!
Please, he was a hack. And riding off nostalgia.
@@dankeith6522 whatever that means. I guess if being a success is so easy then you do what he did.
Thanks for this one Adam. You are getting better and better at being you. A true Professor Of Rock ! 💪👏🤝🍻 This is my favorite song ever.

I listen to “Get What You Give” at least once a week.
Me too! And so does everyone else at the bowling alley.
Check out The Maine's cover of this song; it's terrific
Talk about a man true to himself, his story reminds me of the song I Did it My Way. Great song that he could be still performing to this day if he chose to instead he chose himself. Amazing, great episode professor!
His birth name is Gregg Aiuto and I hope to meet him some day. He's a genius. Someday We'll Know
Great message in the lyrics for sure but this song musically is fantastic too! The instrumental components in this song come together like a fine wine. Just a great great song all around. Thanks Prof!

Thank you Professor for filling in the blanks 25 years later.
one of the greatest pop songs of all time.
God Bless you Greg! 🤟
YEs!

One of my all time favorites for sure...when this released, I was in the Navy based in SoCal, and I would just drive around up and down the PCH with the windows down and this CD playing...so many great tunes on this one that you could probably do a whole episode on the entire album.
