They ALL knew General Hue was lying about his feelings for her. They knew he loved Niao Niao with all his being.
The way the empress spoke of her heartache and jealousy towards the emperor and his other wife.....had me ugly crying. Wow, that too cut him to the core as well.

I cried so much over the last three episodes that I told my friend DO NOT WATCH. She watched it anyway. I tried to warn her but she wouldn’t listen. We both enjoyed the series immensely.
They are not marry others and won't do marry to others. Both are truly in love each other's than others. I wish he should have marry her first instead went to kill other ppl. Its his fault and lose his love.
This is a great drama. I feel the resentment and pain that queen suffers.

Who IS this guy? Is he Li? Is he Huo? Is he insane? Does he have a split personality? What is going on? This poor girl has been abused, gaslighted and mistreated all her life. What a sh!tty thing to do to dump her again. I hope this is all an act to trap the last conspirator in this plot. Good grief!!! The Empress had all the perks but was unloved. That makes me sad. The Concubine had everything else but not the title. Is that so bad? I am sorry also for the children. One pushed forward because of birth order but possessing neither the capabilities nor the inclination. The one better suited held back for the same reason or for being female. Life really sucks sometimes just because that's the way things have always been done. That also makes me sad.
Joiion, You described my thoughts and feeling. Unfairness always protected, called proudly culture, tradition and religion for thousands of years, even by victims. Brainwashed for thousands of years, the waking up and see the cruelties cultures and traditions and religions contain is not going to happen in near timespan. Victims will keep it all alive and even defend it by accepting they deserve to be treated unfair.

Spoiler Alert!!!!
TLDR - Male Lead was forced to switch identities with his dead cousin as a child. It was during the earlier war, both were the same age, and looked very similar. Part of a big revenge plot that lasted years.
Long story -
When the Male Lead (ML) was a child, he and a male cousin who was the same age, looked nearly identical. It was during a time of war, and they and their parents & siblings were in a city under siege. ML's father was close with the Emperor, and was in charge of the city's defense.
The uncle (the father of ML's cousin, and Brother in Law to ML's dad) betrayed the city, let in the enemy, and murdered the ML's father. All of this was witnessed by the ML, who was hidden from view.
Everybody in the city was massacred except the Uncle, who was allowed to "escape", by the enemy. ML's cousin and all other family members were killed (it was gruesome).
However, a very few people were somehow able to survive. Among those survivors were the ML and his Aunt (his cousin's mother, who was also the evil Uncle's wife, and sister of ML's dad).
Because the kingdom was at war, it took a full year for the Aunt and ML to walk back to their own side. In that time, ML told Aunt that her husband had betrayed the city, murdered her brother (his father), and was therefore responsible for killing the rest of their family. Unfortunately this information, physical exhaustion, shock, and starvation made Aunt mostly crazy.
But when she was rational, she and ML realized that they needed to get justice or revenge for all those killed, and take out evil Uncle.
They knew Aunt was losing it, and no one would believe her, and no one was likely to believe a child either, especially without evidence. Plus, due to family fidelity laws, if Uncle claimed ML was actually HIS son, ML could NOT testify against Uncle. And there was no way to PROVE which cousin ML actually was, as it had been a year, they were road weary and starved, and all their close friends and relatives were dead.
So Aunt and ML decided that if and when they made it back, they would say ML was actually the evil Uncle's son. ML would be protected by evil Uncle and not considered a threat, but could slowly gather evidence and make plans against him.
All of these scenes take place after ML has taken his revenge, and it is no longer necessary to hide his identity. In fact, he HAS to claim his real identity, otherwise he is guilty of patricide. But if he is avenging his father's murder, his crime is excusable and even required.
So that's the long version of why he claimed to be one person for many years, but was actually someone else. I hope it helps.

Your summary made it easier for me to understand what is going on. Overall, this drama was wonderfully done and the actors are fantastic. I am a fan of Leo Wu. Despite his young age, Leo Wu has perfect command of every role he plays. He is a brilliant actor. I can’t wait to see his next project. Thanks!❤
