  • Is your Porsche 911 with a 915 transaxle shifting roughly? Before you take on an expensive transmission rebuild learn how to adjust a Porsche 911 shift linkage. It's easy and you can do it yourself. This particular car is a 1978 SC. I advise replacing the various rubber bushings, they are cheap and easy to do yourself and can make a huge difference. Check out this technical article for more shifting based information

These old Porsches, even with a short shift kit aren't really known for their great shifting abilities, but don't be discouraged! Shifting can usually be improved through adjustment and bushing replacement.

This is just what I needed to know. I installed a short shift kit and a new coupler and got things out of wack. Thank you

Nice video - thank you for posting. I finally adjusted the shifting “decently” on my wife’s ‘83 911.

Very helpful, I set up my gear change first time with this video. Interestingly the gear knob was stubborn but I was able to simply lift the gaiter up and everything was fine.

Great tip! Currently installing a new factory short shift kit along with a new Rauch & Spiegel shift rod coupler, so glad to have found your well done video. Definitely the best piece of info I’ve found to line things up for smooth 911 shifting. Thanks much!

Great video, to readjust the shifter after replacing the bushings at the coupler and under the shifter. Thanks.

This procedure worked great for indexing my early 911 trans. The only change is that for the early trans (901 and 911) with a dogleg pattern, set everything up opposite as far as shifter position and coupler position. The coupler should be rotated towards the left side of the car and the shifter should be resting on the right side of the gate.

Do you think I should do this for my 1971 911 e?

Hey, your technique sort of worked on my 76, but when I first did it, I turned the trans all the way clockwise, and shifter to the left, but this resulted in no reverse. So, I moved kept the trans all the way clockwise but moved the shifter sightly left of vertical, and it works perfectly.
When I first got my 912e (yesterday), it was adjusted all wrong and reverse lockout wasn't working, so going from 5'th to 4'th would engage reverse unless you pulled the shifter all the way to the left.
Anyways, with a slight adjustment to your technique, it works perfectly now, reverse locking working great, all the gears click nicely.
    Thanks

Great helpful video. I'm a bit confused with the position of the coupler. I know the shifter should be vertical at 90° and slight push forward until resistance. But what is the correct coupler position? Is it forward/ vertical or forward turned clockwise until it stops? Thanks again.

      +RNR24N7 Hi,
Your coupler should never get 'vertical', it should always be in a horizontal configuration where its wider than tall. If its taller than it's wide something is terribly off, like a loose coupler set screw. Make sure that the pointed allen head set screw is screwed in snugly to the shaft from the transaxle that the coupler slides over. In terms of coupler position, you can see how its done at 1:54 in the video. Check out this link for other helpful hints. www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_shifting_improvements/911_shifting_improvements.htm
If you observe how the coupler and shaft from the shifter interact, you'll be able to reason it out as well. Be Gentle! Don't turn the coupler hard with crazy grip strength, you may hurt it.
Thanks for watching! Glad I could help, it gave me a devil of a time the first few times I did it which is why I made the video. Do it a few times and you'll figure it out guaranteed. Good Luck!

That can be common if it is out of adjustment. The guy in the link below was having the same issue you're describing. I recommend checking out Pelican Parts technical forums if you're a DIY kind of guy. (forums.pelicanparts.com/boxster-cayman-forum/599809-how-do-i-adjust-shift-linkage-no-reverse.html)
