  • Looking for a review of the WEVO Porsche 915 transmission short shifter? Then look no further.
In its' stock form, the 915 gearbox found in pre-1987 Porsche 911's is an interesting transmission to drive. Many complain about its archaic design and how slowly it shifts. While I personally find some of those characteristics to be part of the charm of the 915 transmission, I must admit when I learned of the Wevo Porsche 915 transmission short shifter, I had to check it out.
In this video, I'll give you a thorough review of the Wevo Classic Porsche 915 transmission short shifter. In this video I'll give you:
    - Footage of the shift action so that you can see the length of the throws on the Wevo classic
    - Cost information for the Wevo 915 classic shifter
    - My thoughts on the mahogany gear knob I bought along with it
    - Comparison of the Wevo classic to the 1986 Porsche factory short shift kit that came on the car
    - A recommendation about whether or not you should buy this kit for any Porsche 911 with the 915 gearbox
    0:00 Start
0:08 Overview of what will be covered
1:17 In-car overview of Gear Knob, Boot and reason for doing this mod
1:35 Impressions of the 915 vs. the G50
2:23 Footage of Porsche factory short shift kit parts disassembled
3:16 Review of the shifting experience of the Wevo classic 915 short shift kit
5:59 Would I recommend the Wevo 915 classic shifter?

Nice video! I upgraded my 915 with a Seine Systems Gate Shift Kit in my SC and I also can particularly recommend it as well to improve the shift feeling. Beside of that a fully makeover of the whole shift linkage and first and formost the appropriate gear oil make a huge difference!
Many 911 owners / mechanics want to make it well and use the wrong transmission oil. They make the mistake and fill a modern (partly or fully synthetic) gear oil with far too low viscosity in the 915! On the other hand Porsche recommendeds in the car's manual a pretty old fashioned mineral based only SAE90 GL5 oil with a low temperature viscosity (40°C/104°F) of approx. 180mm²/s=180cSt and a high temperature viscosity (100°C/212°F) of at least 17mm²/s=17cSt. The reason for that is that the Porsche-patented synchronization of the 915 requires urgently a higher viscosity with a higher drag torque! If the viscoisty of the oil and therefore the drag torque is too low, the 915 won't work properly, especially when the gearbox is warmed up after a half an hour of driving...the result with the SAE90 GL5 will be a lack of shifting comfort while the gearbox oil is cold, but a huge improvement until the oil warmed up...unfortunately the oil vendors tend to take now those old oils out of range...but some smaller shops keep those oils in sale for old car ethusiasts like us ;-)
    Best regards from Germany!

Ive always had a love for the air cooled 911/930.I honestly prefer the 915 gearbox over the G50. The 915 gearbox was the first car I learned to drive a manual trans when I had my 85 911.
Now I’m looking for a 3.2L 911 engine and a 915 gearbox for 72 Bug. It’s fascinating that VW and Porsche almost interchange parts with one another.

Hey👍🏻Like the comparison. I've got the Official factory short shift fitted to my 3.2 and I must say it has improved greatly in the shifting, also 95% eliminating the 'sloppy' gate. With the 915 it's all about the 'feel' when shifting, unlike any modern car gearbox. I think the shifting issues stem from folks trying to shift quickly in the lower gears, forgetting they're not in their VW Golf gti. The 915 is a strong gearbox, but had too much bad press regarding the 1st to 2nd shift feel, eventually the synchromesh say's 'enough is enough'.
The WEVO is a lovely addition and I wouldn't think twice on buying one, but I am very pleased with the improvement of my factory option kit.

Shift kits in some cars make a lot of sense, I did that with my 2012 Mustang GT, was going to do it with my Challenger but they fixed much of the issues, maybe later on once more things wear out over time, in your case if your driving as you say you are yeah the kit makes much sense. Nice vid.....yeah when with a challenger because no 928's at a reasonable price with a Dog leg came up... hard to compete with someone who wants to but a GT version and two early 911 Turbos...

I have a WEVO short shifter in my 1984 Carrera. I also got a Stomski shift coupler. The coupler is also important to get. I was racing my car and the two together were wonderful. My mechanic, at the time, thought changing out the shifter, etc., was a waste of money. But he had to admit my car shifted better than any other air-cooled 911 he had driven. My car is now retired from racing and has undergone an "outlaw" restoration. It's beautiful and still shifts great. Everyone who has driven it says it "drives great".

couple of key features of the 915 wevo. The click is to prevent going from 5 to R. This is one of the real usp's of that piece of hardware, surprised that you weren't aware of it. The other usp of the wevo, is the centering spring in the transversal plane, which is not standard on the 915. As you mentioned however, for later 915's 3.2 with the factory short(er)shift, it really isn't the shorter throw of the Wevo that makes it valuable. The other two things do, though! I’m excited to get your review of that sweet Mezger engine ( and how much hp does it have with your apr tune?) how’s the gearing, acceleration and how the more modern the 997 as it compares to the air cooled stuff (but still retains the hydraulic steering feel) Does it feel heavy or hide the extra weight well? I’ve heard the 997 is really the last of the old school but that bigger leap into modernization in the 911. The 991 really went even more modern and even Id say, exotic, comfortable and yes, bigger. But is awesome in a whole new way. Love the 911, greatest car of all time. (All gens are awesome in their own way but so different but yet so familiar. Does the spring "return" the shifter to like a neutral setting? That is to say, if you pull it out of 5th, does it want to return to central neutral (centered between 3rd and 4th), so wanting to return to the left out of 5th or the right out of second? One of the things I like about my BMW is that when I pull it out of 5th, the springs are nice and strong and move the shifter back to the middle immediately. That way, it's a straight pull into 4th or a push into third. There's no hunting for gears. If the shifter is too loose or doesn't want to return to center, I find that it's more difficult to find the gears.

They also perform well but do have some sidewall flex that I wish weren’t there. I’m running Pilots Sports on my 993 and they are a better tire. Different size, of course, but less flex.
