  • After much thought I decided to change my channel name and I wanted to walk you through why and what it means. Saem, or 샘, can mean several things!
    1. It's a shortened form of 선생님, or "teacher"
    2. It means a spring... meaning this channel can serve as a fountain, or a consistent source of Korean knowledge
    3. It's the first half of my name, and a nickname my friends have for me!
    This change holds a lot of meaning for me, as I explain in the video. I hope you like the new name as much as I do! :)

    Your name is 샘물? I thought your real name was "All," middle name "Things," last name "Korean" ;-) Liked the explanation for the channel name, and it makes a lot of sense! And I understand about not wanting to use your real name in English. My real last name isn't "Go" either :P

    Digging the new channel name with the triple meaning and am excited about the website! : D
    Also thank you for sharing about your name. I remembered it vaguely from your 30 facts about me-video, but have noticed that it didn't come up a lot. It's so cool that it's in pure native Korean! Thank you for being our 샘물 쌤

    Your story about your name is really sweet :) you shouldn’t be ashamed or stressed about your name. You’re right, it is beautiful! And of all people, we as viewers interested in learning Korean are indeed most likely to care about pronouncing it right and not judge you for it :) also I think the reasoning behind the channel name is super cool! 👍 (sorry this is so late, I just joined lol)

    How do people not know how to pronounce 샘물? TWO. syllables.
    On a side note, I love your story. I’m a new follower so I just know you as “Your Korean Saem” which I thought had a “servant” ring to it. It’s very selfLESS, which is very attractive. From the first video I watched, I was very attracted to your wealth of knowledge and your mind. You’re so intelligent! Watching those videos of you explaining how to pronounce Korean consonants was exhilarating, and I knew right a way I could listen to you all day. Then I watched another video of your lessons and then another and then another and 3 more after. I thought I’d seen the best, but this is the first personal video I’ve seen that’s not about Hangul and I’m speechless!!!! Dopamine overload. It’s better than drugs! You’re a master storyteller. You stirred my emotions to make me want to beat up those people that butchered your name. You should write a book. I’ll be the first to buy it.
    But also, there are Korean words that explore human emotions that Americans have no words to compare, and I’m starting to think that maybe Americans aren’t aware of those emotions. This is why I’m always wondering how Korean dramas could make me wail. I quit watching American dramas because I’ve seen Korean dramas and so I can’t go back anymore. I’d have to stoop low to watch an American drama. If people today can identify as male, female, binary, etc even though they aren’t biologically, then I would like to identify as Korean. 🇰🇷
    Again, I like the name of the channel. It’s selfless, endearing, intimate, and has a sense of servitude (as in I’m here to serve you or teach you and water you so you can grow).

    I work at a University so I see many international names and I do notice that some Americans have trouble pronouncing names properly (or even close to what they should be), I don't think it was until I started learning Korean that I realized how strange English pronunciation is (especially vowels). Hi 누나!❤ Can I request a video to you?😞 Can you make a video about why does "네" sounds like "de" or why does any word starts with ㄴ sounds like D?:( I know ㄴ wasn't the same with ㄷ but ㄴ was the same with english "D") and any korean words that starts with ㄴ sounds like an english "D". Same with ㅁ, any korean words that starts with ㅁ I hear it as english "B". Can you make a video about it? Pleaseee I'm very confuse,notice my comment! :((((

    • @td8008
      @td8008 3 года назад

      I am a new learner, but may be I can offer my perspective.
      1. What sounds you 'hear' depends on the sounds you know. Since ㄴ ㄷ have similar tongue position you might hear them blend and the closest sound to you is English d even though neither make the d sound.
      2. We get lazy when we talk no matter the language. We go the easiest route. We blend sounds together. The faster we talk the more we muddle sounds. We don't pronounce every syllable all the time. So we can say things like "whadever" with t sounding like d instead of "whatever". Since the tongue position is similar the t sound leans toward d. So ㅁ can sound different if you don't say it fully. It isn't that we never say a hard t, it just depends, so same for ㅁ.
      The more Korean speech you listen to, even if you don't understand it, the more you hear.

    • @YourKoreanSaem
      @YourKoreanSaem  3 года назад +1

      I will make a video on it someday but the short answer is that ㄴ & ㅁ just tend to get “denasalized” and sometimes sound like their “stop” counterparts ㄷ & ㅂ. Your listening is not wrong, it’s just the way the words are sometimes pronounced. ^_^ You may be confused now but the more fluent you get the less confusing the words will be.

    • @aldrinalipio9808
      @aldrinalipio9808 3 года назад

      @@YourKoreanSaem Oh denasalized means there's no totally air flowing in your nose right? So that means It is a English B and D sound because when you pronounce N and M it must be a little air flowing in your nose? So that means ㄴ and ㅁ where intentionally pronounce as D and B?

    • @YourKoreanSaem
      @YourKoreanSaem  3 года назад

      ㄴ isn’t being intentionally pronounced like ㄷ, it’s unintentional but it happens because they take place in the same position. So yes ㄴ requires air flow through the nose but sometimes the air flow is blocked and sounds like ㄷ. Same for ㅁ.

    • @aldrinalipio9808
      @aldrinalipio9808 3 года назад

      @@YourKoreanSaem Why does the airflow blocks? even you need a few air to make ㄴ sound?
