- The Dutch filmmaker Arjan Vlakveld has followed Rod McKuen for two years to make this documentary. Therefore he visited Rod at his house in Beverly Hills, California. Also there were made recordings during a concert in Phoenix, Arizona.
In the documentary are recordings of an performance of Rod in 1971 in Holland, by occasion of the action “Geef Gezondheid”. (Give Health)
Rod sings (parts of) “Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes”, “If You Go Away”, “Seasons In The Sun” “The Far West”, “A Boy Named Charlie brown”, “Building My Home Upon A Rock”, “Love’s Been Good To Me”, “I’ll Catch The Sun”, “A Single Man” “A Man Alone”,
In the film also appear Frank Sinatra and Petula Clark, with whom Rod has worked together a lot.
I was working as secretary to Neely Plumb, manager of the West Coast Division of RCA Victor in the early 60s. Rod was one of Neely's artists whose records he produced. I have treasured memories of Rod spending time in my office many days, chatting about this and that. My favorite was when Rod picked me up from the office one day, driving to the Farmer's Market where he picked out produce and we went to his home for lunch with Eddie. Afterwards, Rod clattered downstairs and came back up with a copy of his "Stanyan Street and Other Sorrows," numbered and signed for me. Watching this and other films about Rod bring tears. We were good friends and I miss him.
Rod Mckuen's poems defines many points of my life... Be it happy or painful. But even when it's painful, Rod Mckuen makes it beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
I love the man and his music ! For me he lives on forever in our hearts . See you in heaven
He used to walk down the sidewalk in front of my apartment in Sausalito, CA in 1970. I wanted to talk to him and tell him how much I enjoyed his songs and poetry. He seemed very much to himself and I was afraid to interrupt. Now I regret not speaking to him.
I met Rod Mckuen in 1981 when I interviewed him the Penthouse of The Sebel Town House Hotel in Sydney for radio station 2SM. He was a life hero for me and as a broadcaster his use of the written word and in performing those words brought a spiritual dimension to the his work so very unusual... unique. His spoken word album, THE SEA captures a creative dynamic that no one has come near to in recording spoken word lyrics. There is a set of 4 albums called SEASONS which I own in Australia and is far from being available now. It reaches the same spooky spiritual connection that he makes with his words, his songs, his presence. I spent hours with him after my interview. A kind of dream really to meet ones idol and have him take an interest in my own talent. We kept contact. I saw him in concert at Sydney's Opera House and we met two more times after this. The more he revealed of himself in his work the more mysterious in a way he became to me. I thank him for his inspiration which has lived with me through a long broadcast career. Jeffrey James
I also saw him at the Opera House.I have heaps of his records and books. He is my all time idol.
Excellent work! thank you for documenting Rod McKuen - great insight into the man and how he worked.
I realy enjoyed this Documentry i wished i had seen him when he was in the Nederlands A man alone just like my self I hope he is in a better place know god bless you Rod McKuen
Thanks for posting this. McKuen was a greater artist than most give him credit for. His work is better as spoken word material than on the page---but it has truth to it.
I'm sorry McKuen didn't live to complete his "barn" or the cottages he described. I hope his record collection and his archive of his own recordings are in good, appreciative hands.
He spoke and sang to my soul. 😇
I saw him in concert in 1974 in Portsmouth, England.
I saw him at The Royal Albert Hall, a night never forgotten.
Great documentary R.i.p.
The 20th Century's Walt Whitman. RIP Great Rod
Well said and maybe one of these days Rod will be recognised for the genius that he was. There was always too much jealousy and resentment pushed his way. Just such a shame that Rod never was granted in Death the recognition of all his work and wonderful collections he had, so much sold off or put in dumpsters. I treasure all that I was able to acquire and keep safe. All the best.
I really miss him . . .
I wish someone would release a book of Rod's complete poems and song lyrics!
RIP, Rod McKuen ! Wolfsky9
26:01: "...make your balls tingle..." Lol; spoken like a true poet!
Wel wel wel, ek het altyd gedog hy is van Kanada. iets nuuts geleer. Nog steed 'n wonderlike mens en digter!
I wonder if Mckuen and Scott Walker ever collaborated or performed together, given their love for Jacque Brel's music?

GOUD MERCI
Please tell me I misunderstood.
He isn't dead yet...

Really surprised to see him arguing w/ Petula Clark about the frame of mind of the words.......a woman's attitude towards some of his lyrics seemed to clash. He always liked Petula, and they seemed like an old couple who had been together too long during the argument during the recording session.
