In this video, we're taking a look at the It's The King of Soap Bubble Bokeh, and Why You Might Need One. The TTArtisan 100mm f2.8 is a budget lens that produces beautiful soap bubble-like bokeh.
This lens is perfect if you're looking for a portrait lens that will produce some amazing bubble bokeh. Not only is the bokeh beautiful, but the lens is also budget-friendly, making it a great option for anyone looking to add a bit of bokeh to their portraits, without spending a lot of money. Хобби

A wonderful bubble lens especially with front-side backlight
Fingers crossed that this kicks Pentax in the pants to not only make their new film camera but also put some of their old m42 lens formulas back into production.
Could make them a major lens player again.
Thank you for your review! I purchased one when they were announced to use with my A7iii and Pentax K3 with adapters. I tested it recently and was very happy with some shots I took along a local highway at night, set to f/2.8 focussed at infinity. If I can figure out how to attach an example I will post it.
I am looking forward to trying it out for night street photography around Sydney, Australia next weekend.
Nice work. I tried the 100mm and enjoyed the bokeh but felt it was to tight..I have an old Fujinon 55 f/2.2 it's wider fov and cheap price makes it more versatile and the soap bubble bokeh is one of the best in the business.
I already have a Helios 44-2 but this definitely looks like an interesting lens! I did not know about the oil on the blades until I watched a video pointing it out as an issue with some of the copies! Maybe in the future I will consider this one, but for now this lens just looks very interesting
Yes, I have a few helios with oil on the blades.
have you tried adding a closeup lens to this like raynox dcr250 &/or the nisi ones, and made this a macro lens?
can i mount this is nikon d750? what kind of adapter i should look for
how dose this compare to Meyer optic orester 100 2.8? I plan to buy this m42 lens
Hi Mark! What do you think about using it in concert photography and festivals mostly low light? I know it might sound funny but I just bought a X-T5 with a couple of lenses and i don't have at the moment the funds for a zoom like the 50-140 f2.8 X. So this would be roughly like an 150mm
M42 is kind of a universally adaptable mount now for modern mirrorless. I’ve been wondering if someone was going to do this. I think Voigtlander was the last major brand to release M42 for “modern” cameras.
Yeh, I already had all the adapters, for the vintage lenses. It’s a pretty cool idea, a modern M42 lens. These Chinese lens makers are great, they just make stuff and and see if people like it.
@@markwiemelsYes thankfully I have a good supply of adapters and other M42 glass 😊
@@markwiemelsIncidentally the v2 versions of the K&F adapter M42 to Sony has a more matte black internal finish than the original version.
I was wondering about that. Probably a bigger issues with wide lenses, than tele, but have had issues with adapter reflection with some lenses in the past.
Exciting offering. I’d love to see more modern-made vintage-style lenses.
SLR Magic Cine Primes ;)
@@_rhapsodist Maybe they're good, but not even close. Off the top, cine is just a non-starter for a lot of folks, with a lot more cost and bulk for anyone who doesn't need cine housings. Plus, most of these have a lot more elements and groups than I'd expect.
How about Tessars and Biotars and Planars? At most, SLR Magic lenses are described as having almost vintage character. I'm talking literal vintage designs. Like this triplet.
Just in time for Christmas and all those festive lights Mark. Liked.
Yes! I should have mentioned that in the video, it only just occurred to my while editing it.
could I put this on a speed booster? for MFT
Old 56mm fuji has boker with edges and it was frounded on by some for new 56mm .
I get confused
Great video, you are a great source for all these interesting pieces of glass.
Thanks. So kind of you to say.
Awesome review, thanks for putting it up. I am going to buy the lens. Is there a low budget modern lens that does really good swirly bokeh? With this lens and the TT Artisan 35mm f0.95, a swirly bokeh lens would compete the budget bokeh trifecta🙂
I don't know if one, but the 100mm does swirl a bit at the edges.
Thanks to this video, I ordered the lens because of it and then Simon's utak review adding in even more interest in getting it.
Funny enough, I happened across it within an hour or so of when it was posted, but took a few days before actually hitting purchase. I had a few other things I wanted to order with it. An A Mount adapter so I can use it on my A900, and a E Mount that I will get from the purchase of the Helios 44M from ebay.
I saw his video too, it was really good.
Mark, thank you for work on alerting your viewers of inexpensive lenses. For me, most modern lenses & 📷 tended to be too sharp (tho not always a bad thing) or sterile (not a good thing). I find vintage lenses produce visually interesting images better than do my current lenses. This TT Artisans lens looks like a future purchase. Do you know if other focal length (50 or 65mm, for example) of this design will be included in the future. Thank you again for your review. Looking forward to discovering other alternatives from your work. ✌🏼& 📸
I don't know about any future plans for other focal lengths, I don't have that level of insight. It's a good idea though, so I will mention it and see if they say anything. I really like these budget lenses as a more reliable alternative to vintage lenses, none of the haze, fungus, oil the aperture blades issues.
Does this lens work with the modern day camera’s electronics? Or do you need to shoot completely in manual mode? I love unique lenses….I own many Lensbaby lenses which are so fun!
Manual
thoughts, VILTROX AF 16mm F1.8 , sony 50mm 1.8 fe and samyang 85 mm 1.4...... OR sigma 24-70mm and 50mm 1.8 OR the viltrox 16mm, sigma 24-70mm and sony 50mm. For vacation trip to Paris/London/Scottland , Trying to decide.
I enjoyed the images out of the Sigma 24-70, but found that lens to be very heavy, and I prefer a lighter setup for travel. I would go Sigma 28-70 or Tamron 28-75. If you are using the ZV-E1, FX3, or A7SIII, with the crazy good low light sensor, then I would go with the companion wide zoom, Sigma 16-28 or Tamron 17-28. If you have one of the other cameras, I would go with the Viltrox 16mm. Zoom lenses are better travel lenses, as a rule, as the most important part of capturing the image is having the right focal length. The other lens to consider, is the Tamron 20-40, it's small, affordable, and great, it's my main lens on my ZV-E1, but I do miss the reach of the 28-70 at times, but the 20 on the wide end is very useful, and the lens is very small.
This is for the sony a7iv, and I have these 4 lens so trying to figure out which ones to bring.@@markwiemels is 3 primes not a good idea at variety of focal length, as the 50m is super small, and the others arent 2 bad, walk around in the day mostly with the 16mm, and then 50mm for night time with the 85mm just in case for closer shots. Then the handheld weight is lower then the 24-70mm sigma
The best thing about this lens is that you can use it on medium format cameras up to a Pentax 67 and boy oh boy is it nice.
Oh, wow, I didn't know that!
my SLR Magic 35mm f1.2 (full frame E-mount) does the same trick and it's been out since some years, give it a try ;)
How is it on a crop sensor size camera? Do you lose a lot of the character?
I really need to test that, all my samples are on full frame. Will try to test it and come back to you.
Excellent question
@@markwiemels appreciate it. I'm interested in this lens on a Fuji. Curious if they will come out with a 65mm version for crop sensors
Just pick up a lens turbo ii m42-fx speed booster, they do a good job.
I understand the company Meyer Optik Gorlitz company (based in Germany I think?) makes some rather beautiful looking m42 lenses. One of which, the Trioplan 100mm would be a direct competitor. Saving the rather more expensive price…
I’m a little confused as to what is going on with the company at present, though? The old company name had been dormant for decades, then I think was bought and newer lenses were made, but there were reliability issues, and then the company re-started with production back in Germany. I’ve really wanted to try some of their lenses out, particularly the re-make of a classic Zeiss. Perhaps you can find out more for us and review some of the lenses? It would be interesting to compare this lens to the original vintage and newer versions of the Trioplan.
Thanks, since making this video I have had a few questions about them, and was planning to reach out.
The Trioplan, new, in UK. lists around £1000, $1250.
I bought a Nikon Z6 exclusively for use with my vintage glass collection. I am very excited about this release.
Yah, this lens is a very similar experience. I love vintage lenses, and taking the time to work out how to get the best out of them, and what they do well, it’s really rewarding.
Nikon F lenses are the universal donor lenses and the Nikon Z cameras are the universal acceptor bodies. I might buy a Z body (c’mon Nikon drop the Zf already..!) but likely zero chance I’m buying Z glass because they are the desert island lenses… do not adapt to any other system.
@@bradl2636 I would love a ZF, and would happily shoot vintage lenses on that camera. It would complete the experience. Adapted 3rd party M mount lenses would also be great, maybe even better, because the small adapter makes them feel more like a native mount.
@@markwiemels Totally agree and I’m waiting on the Zf and A7Cii to decide which way I’m going to go for my next full frame. Sadly it seems Fuji is quietly quitting APS-C enthusiast stills photography (XPro and X-E are gone) so Sony got me for crop sensor.
Try the canon ef 135mm f2 it’s a much better choice & a solid performer especially mounted on Sony Alpha cameras
I hear that's a good one. It's a totally different type, and price point of lens.
They should make a 58mm f2… eBay sellers of Helios 44’s (the “Batman” lens) will have a cow if they do 😂
That’s a brilliant idea. Plus, new lens, no fungus, haze, oil on aperture blades to worry about.
@@markwiemelsSeriously I’ve been wondering when someone was going to join to dots on this I’m actually surprised it wasn’t Voigtlander themselves… imagine the made in Japan quality it would be… even a Biotar clone…
@@bradl2636 absolutely.
@@markwiemelsI mean, they made like a bajillion of the Helios. If you're having trouble finding one without fungus, you're doing something wrong.
What's the filter size?
49mm
i want one.
I'm sure you would kill it with this lens. Just sent you an email.
Beautiful 🧼
Soooo... 100mm f2.8 lens in M42? With soap bubble bokeh? Sound awfully similar to the VAB Pentacon lens with same traits...
And BTW, rubber on ALL my vintage lenses is still going strong. That just speaks volumes about the state of modern "quality"...
Hi, i buy a Trioplan 100mm f2.8 (1970) and Clean it. The sopebuble is in rainbow. 😊
Hey dude, do you live in Aus? seems it from your footage!
Yes!
Very niche product IMHO.
Yeah, it’s something totally different.
This is for artistic photography won't use it for anything serious. Helios 44-2 is 100x better by far interms of image quality.
You have long arms, or a weird choice of focal length ;-)
Both.
Background seems way too distracting without a vintage character. Think I would stick to similar vintage lenses.
I have pumped up the saturation and contrast. It’s much more muted, straight out of camera.
Vintage lenses can be pretty hit and miss. Fungus and oil on the aperture blades is common. Focus and aperture rings won’t turn as smooth. The most famous designs keep creeping up in price. Personally, I’m excited that someone is making affordable vintage-style lenses with modern manufacturing, since now I don’t have to deal with the risks of eBay.
I’ll be even more excited if the eventually release some for APS-C sensors with extra short focal lengths that never really existed for this kind of vintage lens. I bet there aren’t many 33mm triplets out there, or 40mm biotars, but TTArtisan might make them, and maybe even with autofocus to combine old-school character with modern convenience. It’d be an interesting niche for a lens company.
It’s pretty but distracting at the same time
It's a "look" which is a matter of personal preference for sure. I pumped up the saturation of the lights, in editing, they would be more subtle otherwise.
Would’ve loved to see more images. Less talk. Thanks for alerting us to this lens!
Yes, it's a disappointing thing for me. The more I talk, and less images, the better the video do on RUclips, I would rather have the entire video be nothing but photos and video footage. Maybe I should make an image gallery that people can go too, sperate from the video.
@@markwiemels Wow - oh my - okay. That is disappointing but understandable. But yes, a look book or something like that would be cool if you had the bandwidth for it. Thanks for answering back!
@@sovereignacademyfortheperf4591 I have this suspicion, that more photos and video samples, allow people to decide if the lens is for them or not, more quickly, then they stop watching the video. This makes RUclips think the video is no good, because the total watch time is shorter, so they show it to fewer people. It's pretty annoying.
@@markwiemels Sheesh…! 🙄
Unfortunately the quality is bad
The quality of what?
@@markwiemels the output of the lens.its image quality
No, it’s quite good. As described and shown in the video. Not sure what you are seeing, maybe you are watching in low resolution on RUclips.
You do have to stop down to f3.5 to clean up the image, but one you do that, it’s pretty nice.
