    Thanks for this awesome video, I had a great time working on this game (I did most of the AI, pathfinding, some staff combat and some player movement stuff). And you're totally right, the player movement and combat were absolutely the prototype for Jedi Outcast, which we did in 10 months (for that one I did the lightsaber combat, the force powers and the Jedi/Reborn AI). We brought over the player animation system from this game into our Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force engine and lightsaber combat was born. These are some of my favorite game development experiences.

      Shame that your work is not being developed further -- it would be amazing to polish it and to get rid of the quirks produced by unstable connections and liberately introduced network lags for some new games!

    For reference: Raven was thrown into the COD mines because they REALLY screwed the pooch on Singularity super-hard. (Searching for "the confessional singularity" should bring up an article with all the gory details.) Combine that with seemingly nobody buying Wolfenstein 2009 until people started making videos about it being underrated, and they kinda *had* to make Faustian bargains to keep the doors open...

      Neversoft and the ghost of Infinity Ward apparently worked together well enough on Ghosts that, combined with the decision by Neversoft's bosses to retire, the decision was made to merge the two studios together. Since they were working on COD games, the Infinity Ward name was kept, and the Neversoft eyeball was, uh, doused in petrol and given a viking funeral at the tip of a flaming arrow. Really!

    My favorite game from Raven was Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force. The single player is one of the best Star Trek FPS games ever made. However, where it really shined was it's multiplayer. Quake 3 gameplay. Star Trek next gen weapons with alt fire, strafe jumping, map making tools.....great stuff. The multiplayer scene started to get pretty thin around 2008, but it's multiplayer is still my number one pick for any multiplayer FPS I've ever played.

    Heretic II's ending is right up there for one of the worst video game endings of all time, leaving the player confused and without a feeling of proper closure. Probably the only other game that tops it, in that regard, is Clive Barker's Jericho.
    Heretic II is definitely one of those overshadowed gems, though, so thank you for this video.

      If you think that this ending is bad enough, look for an ending for Drakan:Order of the flame, where the game suddenly ends without proper closure. Or even worse, The Precursors, where the game literally ends by a phrase: "Don't you want to solve the mystery of the Precursors?". Literally the game trolling you as after this phrase the game ends with credits (and you won't even stop bad guys from doing what they are doing).
      In Heretic 2 we can at least see Corvus stopping the plague by finishing the spell.

      Truly one of those games that i would mind if it would get the sequel or full remake. Gore system and fair but hard balance were the brightest sides of that game. And with all respect for Dark Souls but those aspects are the things that DS series did not achieve even in the last game. The closest in fun of hack and slash (or just slash) the enemies to pieces is RUNE but it is more fast paced than SBoD and less tactical which is another very good game i guess.

    • @craftyyoungster4528
      @craftyyoungster4528 5 лет назад

      Rune is the one about a viking, right? It's pretty simple compared to SBoD (and at least seems pretty short), nothing complex like Severance's combos and more restricted movement but it's fun. Another simple 3rd person hack and slash game that I really liked is the first Bloodrayne. It's a little bit different with its abundance of guns (that you drop once they are out of ammo) but your main way of dealing with bad guys should still be close combat. The only problem with recommending it is that the first short tutorial chapter is pretty BORING. But once the player is past it, the game improves significantly, in my opinion. It's just so fun to run around playing a half-vampire killing machine that can actually terrify her enemies. It has a pretty nice dismemberment system too and I like how there are many situations where you find different groups of enemies fighting each other. Also, Bloodrayne 2 improves the graphics, adds more depth to the combat and platforming and manages to screw up by ending up way more boring than the first game. It's still bearable and okay to play with some breaks here and there but way worse than its predecessor. Too many stupid repeating puzzles, the platforming feels somewhat stiff and the enemies are way less fun: in the first game, you have the likes of Nazi soldiers with guns pissing their pants when up against the protagonist and you can understand why, in the second game you often get human punks fearlessly trying to punch a night monster lady with their bare hands after she chopped the rest of their buddies up with her arm blades.

      @@KojiroGanryuSasaki Yeah. I do acknowledge that, plus the level design. Seven Portals is responsible for a lot of bad first impressions.

      So in an ironic twist more Doom mods have been made using these features than Hexen mods.

    • @Kijinn
      @Kijinn 5 лет назад +6

      Without any doubt, Hexen is significantly better than Heretic.
      Its biggest flaw was the confusing map-puzzle design. There's no denying it. Everything else was an immense improvement, though.
      The enemies, weapons and map design in Heretic were bland, uninspired and badly conceptualized. Nothing seemed to have any rhyme or reason. Very difficult to get immersed in such a design mess.
      It was really just "Doom" with a fantasy theme that lacked a concept.
      Hexen added a lot of atmosphere, with stuff like tree leaves blowing in the wind and ambient weather effects. Places and creatures matched with one another...at least more so than before. Using the weapons was far more satisfying and the 3 classes added variety to the gameplay loop, since you needed to adjust your tactics.
      Heretic makes it easier to get through the game, due to its linearity but that is the only objective advantage I could think of and it's more of a flaw for people who prefer a non-linear world design.
      I would also add that "Hexen II" was a below average game. There was barely any enemy variety and you'd always only get about 2-3 of them per room. Combat was slow and cumbersome. You'd feel like playing the geriatric grandparents of the Hexen protagonists, going from the first game to the 2nd.

    • @HexenStar
      @HexenStar 5 лет назад +3

    • @HexenStar
      @HexenStar 5 лет назад

      Hexen II is way superior to Hexen I. Design-wise, atmospherically and creatively. Much more hardcore combat. Especially on highest difficulty. You actually have to think, plan and even calculate - not button-mash.
      It's only flaw was poor lighting system and certain missteps in weapon scaling (which are manageable). And, there Hammer of Thyrion now.
      However, with certain improvements, mods - the full potential of Hexen I gameplay can also be realized. Which still loses power to it's sequel...
