Im 72, and have been running around in the boonies since I was a child. In the early 70's I traveled to many national forest & wilderness areas. I met all kinds of people. I saw more then a few dead over the years. Rescued some, helped searched for others. Ran across many who just didnt know the first thing about basic survival prepar edness. They bought all the packs & boots etc. They walked into the mountains following well marked trails. Little did many of them realize until it was too late that they had badly underestimated things.
I dont go that deep into the woods its normally short day hikes with my dad but even there we pass people anywhere from 20 to 80 wearing sandals and carrying absolutely 0 water with them, theyll stop and ask "hey is this hike difficult" to us when we're hiking out. This has happened so many times my dad n i have started telling people "its hard without water" rather than being honest. Even if you think a trail is easy or flat enough for you, you can still get into trouble if you arent prepared.
These Amazing Powell county Rescue volunteers rescued my twin sons and their friend 2 without their shoes after a canoe dumping deep in the most treacherous part of the river! 4 years ago from the river gorge! We will always be exremely grateful for the wonderful amazing work they do! Thanks again to you all! One of my twin sons became an EMT partly due to that experience! and Great job to the police helicopter crews on this particular rescue! GREAT WORK ALL !!!❤❤❤
Exactly, 7 days prior they warned it. National guards were put on alert in several states and these dufuses go hiking. Hope they charged them for their rescue.
It takes skills and nerves of steel to do what they do especially in that type of weather risking their lives to do it .I don't think they get enough credit for what they do.Job well done.Mission accomplished ❤
Nice Job! Very familiar with this helo. It's an old vietnam era Bell UH1 "Huey". Because of lower budgets many older military helos are utilized by state police after the military upgrades to newer models. Seen it take off and land many a time on the tarmac outside my office window near London/Corbin airport during the summer.
I'm an older woman that has always wanted a ride in a helicopter but have never managed it - looking through a first person camera, especially when he opened the side door in-flight, was every bit the thrill I thought it would be! Glad y'all rescued the hikers, and thanks for the secondary magnificent views!❄️🚁
Thank God for people like y'all. I know that these kids have parents who have been beside themselves. I pray that The Lord bless you in Big Big ways. You are heroes.❤️
So many questions, so few answers. I’d like to hear the full interviews, like why couldn’t they hike out? Too far? No food? Someone was injured? How did they get help? How did they get on top of that rock! Etc…..
@@janetpattison8474 The simple answer is they either didn't check the weather forecast or ignored it. Where they were air lifted from is not hikeable with snow on the ground without ice climbing gear. Quite simply, they were not prepared for where they went.
So happy to see none of those young men were obviously injured. Hopefully this experience inspires one or more of them to join search & rescue in adulthood.
The Cold Within Six humans trapped by happenstance In bleak and bitter cold. Each one possessed a stick of wood Or so the story’s told. Their dying fire in need of logs The first man held his back For of the faces round the fire He noticed one was black. The next man looking ‘cross the way Saw one not of his church And couldn’t bring himself to give The fire his stick of birch. The third one sat in tattered clothes. He gave his coat a hitch. Why should his log be put to use To warm the idle rich? The rich man just sat back and thought Of the wealth he had in store And how to keep what he had earned From the lazy shiftless poor. The black man’s face bespoke revenge As the fire passed from his sight. For all he saw in his stick of wood Was a chance to spite the white. The last man of this forlorn group Did nought except for gain. Giving only to those who gave Was how he played the game. Their logs held tight in death’s still hands Was proof of human sin. They didn’t die from the cold without They died from the cold within. ~James Patrick Kenny
These fools didn't have any way to build a fire and no way to light the wood if any wood was even up there to build a fire. It's always out of area and out of state people that come in and end up in trouble or far worse dead. I have been all over those mountains and i never ever take a risk.
This is really nerve wracking! Great job pilot, and all the rescuers! The snow isn’t deep where they landed , I wonder why they couldn’t hike out. Stuck on top of the rock?
Yes, the only way to get up on top of the rock is to free climb up a crevice in the rock. Even on a perfectly sunny day, it's extremely dangerous. There was no way they were getting off that rock until the snow cleared.
Job well done rescue team. I have climbed the gorge. They just made an error in judgment. They will think about it next time, and they will be safer i am sure
I hope that the state of Kentucky makes Beavis and Butthead and their cousins, pay for this "rescue" for being up there in this weather in the first place!!!
Oh,yes, they do look embarrassed because they shouldn't be there in this snow.I was a careless hiker like them almost 50 years ago.Was lucky to survive a fall without broken bones, just some stiches
It’s a mystery to us all. The snow where the copter landed wasn’t deep. Did they have proper gear? Why were they on top of that rock? Why couldn’t they hike out? Was one of the hikers injured? They didn’t have warm clothes? No food? They didn’t ck the weather b4 going out in the wilderness? Too many questions, so few answers.
The size of their packs tells me they had 3 season hiking gear. They definitely didn't have ice climbing gear, which you need to get to that location with snow on the ground.
If you're brave/foolish enough to trying climbing to the top of Courthouse Rock were they were, it's even scarier trying to get back down from there -- at that's on a clear day with no wind, snow, or ice. It's a rare person who'll even try to climb up there, and trying to get back down from there ain't no joke!
@@rssvssyou prolly don’t know what courthouse rock is, it’s about a 50 ft free climb up a rock that’s already dangerous enough with just a little rain. They obviously weren’t smart enough to look at the weather, they climbed the night before when there was no snow
So, why are these people out there? Why are regular people trying to figure out gas for their cars as a daily struggle? Who are these tourists who require rescue? So many require rescue...who are these special folks?
Why are they wearing jeans? Cotton kills! Number one rule for hiking in winter is no cotton! Number two is be prepared. Number three is expect the unexpected. Number four always carry the 10 Essentials. Know how to use a map & compass, know your route, let someone know your intended travel route - time out and time expected to be home. Most importantly know your limits and expertise, and heed the around times. Last but not least, dutch the ego. Getting home is a successful adventure out. Glad they were rescued. Kuddos to the pilot and team.

Good Job! You pulled them out of a life threatening situation. Thank you!
These rescue guys are terrific
Can only imagine the relief and gratitude they feel. Great news. (I'm too cold when it hits 40°.) 😂
Congratulations to the pilot, and all the incredible people who performed the rescue! They were very very fortunate to be rescued.
That rotor wash from the Huey is and 80 mph down force wind. Hueys burn around 80 gallons of fuel per hour.
Nice scarf and jeans. Real survival expert that one.

Not enough budget for a new one, these were handed down by military National Guard to KSP.

Great job by the rescuers, but what the heck are you doing hiking out in that kind of weather? What no one ever heard of checking the weather forecast?
Too much of a hassle.
They were special needs.
Did they not know the weather would turn bad ; just asking 🧐

So what happened with the 3 - 4 people on the lower shelf?
Glad they are safe. Good job rescue team.

Beautiful day for a hike
Better than the average bear! 🙏🇺🇲
I love it when the plan comes together.😁
I did NOT expect them to land! Amazing
I'm pretty sure that Bigfoot is extremely happy that the 5 people are out of his woods. Wouldn't u if that was your home.
How EMBARASSING for them!
It didn’t look like they really needed to be rescued. We’re they lost? I don’t get it.
They went climbing and snow and ice came in faster than expected. They didn't have the gear to descend with all the snow and ice.
It was the cold. It got down to single digits lol. I'm in the next state over and my water is froze up
That disregarded the weather forecast and put the rescuers lives in danger. Charge them for the rescue.
That’s courthouse rock it’s like a 30 ft free climb up and extremely dangerous to climb down without snow as it is

Great that the crew is safe after that rescue. Now charge the hikers for it.
Redstar doesn’t and can’t charge for there services

Why were they rescuing these people? They look like they had gear. I didn’t look like it was Mount Everest. are there people who go snow camping?

Silly kids, don’t go hiking in that kind of weather
College students and they vote ? Just asking for a friend. Congrats to the responders , great job !
Didn't hear any of the college students say thank you ,
That's kinda of being Ungrateful...
They did 2 times. It's just loud during. He said "Thank you. Thank you."❤️
They thought was a uber to the coffee shop.

oh ffs!!
They couldn't see the trail I guess because of the snow.
The trail is steep, can't just hike it with snow on it.
There is no hiking down courthouse it’s a climb, you can see how they got up when the helicopter is coming towards them. It’s covered in snow
