  • 2021 was a rough year in the Sierra with all the fires and park closures. I got out for some fishing and give a recap of my 2021 and lack of trips in the Sierra because of the fires.

Welcome to semi-retirement. This is my 4th year of retirement and 36 years of teaching history. I wake up each day telling God "thank you" for retirement. I have not backpacked since June with fires and closed parks. Thinking about going to Salmon creek but still no campfires and I don't want to be cold, so will wait. Thanks for the video.

Thanks Blake! Retirement is pretty great and I’m really fortunate to have a small pension that also provides free medical so no worries. We earned it! My hiking buddy just had hip replacement surgery and also has 2 new knees so hoping he is good to go by spring. Going with or without him as I am greatly missing trail and backcountry bliss. You don’t realize how important it is to life balance until something like fires 🔥 keep you from going!

I’m so glad I hiked the TRT in mid June. So lucky I got it done before the fires started. I retired in July and have been going a little stir crazy as well, so I’m starting a seasonal job to keep me out of trouble. LOL! Good to see you back out there.

A seasonal gig sounds good as long as it doesn’t interfere with hiking! Congrats on the TRT!

Some rain and snow predicted for the Northern part of the Sierras. We in the Southern part of Arizona are warmish and dry and that's expected to continue. Right now those conditions are useful for me, but concerns me as it returns us to drought conditions and possible fires. Having tabled art and hiking for the last almost 2 years I find myself watching more hiking and adventure vids to try to scratch the itch. Soon, I hope, to feed the hiking and mountain hunger as well as a few road treks. I know you love the Sierra Nevadas, I sure do, but do you ever consider trying some out of state areas and the wonderful trails available elsewhere? my first "major" hike this coming year may be what I laughingly call a "through hike" A round trip of 34 miles on a trail through grassland and Mesquite shrub along our local river, totally flat and at 4200' elevation. I'll be 80 so am a little slower so will take 4 or 5 days to do it. It will be so good to hike and camp again, to explore the nocturnal river life as well. Happy trails and good fishing to you/

      Hi Trilby
Your trip sounds great. I sure hope I can hike or even backpack into my 80’s! You are doing great! I hope to visit Zion in a couple weeks and would love to do some trips outside of the Sierra. The wife and I have plans to someday do the grand National Parks tour but she is only 51 and we can’t afford for her to retire yet as she pads her federal pension. My hiking partner who is also retired just had a hip replaced and should be good to go by summer. Getting old sucks but it’s no reason to stop hiking. Like you said it just takes longer! Happy trails!

@@ApeMan You will enjoy Zion for sure, and Sedona if you get that way. I am making great progress with my recovery, working hard with physical therapy in a skilled nursing inpatient facility. Doctor says I'll hike again within 3 months it will be a little bit til I back pack but that will come as will the inclines of mountain hiking. Patience required. The saying is that human makes plans and the gods laugh. They had a grand belly laugh this time for sure. Keep those videos coming. They motivate.

Congratulations on your retirement! There is nothing like it. I retired almost two years ago at the age of 66. Now I go to the mountains whenever I choose and I've done so often. In fact, I have an overnight trip planned in this area (WV) next weekend. I spent some time on the JMT in the summer. You are looking lean and fit and in good hiking trim. That will help your knees as well. All of us need our time in the mountains. Enjoy!

The mountains are my medicine! I have 2 weekdays off every week to enjoy outdoor places when they aren’t so busy. Have fun on your overnighter!

I too just retired. Sort of. LOL... You might think about getting involved in forest management. I mean CA is terrible at it. They could use the help. Either that or just burn the rest of it all at once and get it over with so we don't have to breath the smoke over here in Nevada next year. That stuff is deadly.

Congrats on your sort of retirement. Pray for rain! We are off to a decent start.
