@@trulymental7651 It is because we can tell that it's of a tree species that has been extinct from 320 million years, they are fundamentally different from modern trees. These ancient trees are most closely related with modern quillworts, far removed from any tree species alive today. 'Trees' aren't a monophyletic taxonomic group, it's just a catch-all term to refer to a wide variety of disparate plant species that converged upon the shape that we think of as a 'tree' (a trunk with branches to grow much taller than over surrounding plants in order to compete for sunlight).
Incredible! Just wondering how roman ruins from just thousands of years ago are buried under sometimes, metres of soil but this is still sitting on the surface after hundreds of millions of years?!
thats because it was found below at they think a reservoir they were making and would be very deep below. Now its placed at ground level but only some hundered years or so . Harry thank you so much for doing this video. My sister and I did your Harrogate walking tour back in May and I’ve been looking forward to seeing this video. Good luck with the bike ride. Just a quick question, why such a big backpack, are you homeless.
Wow. That is really cool and that you found a second tree stump nearby is incredible. At first I thought putting a plaque near the tree stump would be a good idea but have changed my mind. Labelling the tree stump would possibly attract the wrong sort of attention. I now believe both trees should be removed and put on display in the Harrogate museum.
I clicked on to see Harrogate, as an Australian, my husband and I owned a cottage in Bishop Monkton a long time ago. I'm pleased that I did, as the tree is remarkable.
slip of the tongue I guess. He meant fossilised, if it was petrified that would be a big piece of coal. Instead that tree decomposed and filled in the hole and as you rightly pointed out is fossilised. you can have petrified trees that are stone but this is not that due to its mineral composition being sand n quartz, which it can only be a in fill cast therefore.
Yes, it really is a beauty. It preserves some of the root system as well as the trunk, and unlike this one, it is prominantly displayed and has an information plaque which includes a picture of what the 'tree' looked like when alive. Well worth a look.
Really special! Scarsville Reservoir? And then forgotten? What kind of tree was it? That old, they might not be 'trees' as we know them but towering pre-conifers. And then they find another one? Holy heck!! Splendid!!
