Someone else may have mentioned it, but you can set the brightness knob on the MSR between two settings and it will be OFF. I keep mine set between 4 and 5. A slight nudge either way and it’s on.
Just purchased the Romeo MSR for the RUGER PC CARBINE 9MM
Careful, I said the same thing you did and he got his feelings hurt.. but why review something if you don’t even see that it states it on the box😅
Shit I had no idea tbh, that for the tip.
If that's the case, can bumping it around cause it to change settings?
@@95talon07the msr adjustment is “hard” to turn.
Enough that ppl complain about it. I love mine it competes with my other red dots
Good review. I have both sights. Both great. I like the MSR a little better because you can see clearly through the covers and there's no rubber lens caps to lose.
Yea thats a good point
The flip up style lens is so much cleaner
I was going back and forth between the two and your review sealed the deal for the R5.
I need to grab another one l lol
Good review and comparison. Thanks for taking the time. Really appreciated you doing the actual comparison of adjusting the sights on camera. Good stuff.
Glad to be able to help
@@MrBlane85 except you gave misinformation… your main point was the fact that the MSR doesn’t turn off, it has the same mechanics in that facet, as the Romeo 5.. I own an MSR, it turns off after leaving it untouched fairly quickly and turns back on when you bump it/ pick it up. Do your research before you do a video explaining the product smh.
@@Abcdefghijllmnop you bored Ottis?
@@MrBlane85 I was actually, you obviously zipped up tho 😂🤫🤐
@@MrBlane85 you should give legit reviews if you’re gonna review something.. pretty simple, look at your top comment, it states your fault. You’re a leach.
Well done my friend. I cant tell you how many reviews I've seen on this and no one shows the red dot on a red dot scope!!! I was looking at the MSR today but they didnt have the Romeo 5. The MSR's dial was tight, not easy, in fact a bit cumbersome to turn. Many excellent points on the dot. I think you sold me on the Romeo 5. Thanks much for being right to the point on everything!
Both are nice. You did alright. Post some range video when you can. I'd love to see that. Keep pushing!
Yea I plan to. Need to step my RUclips skills up lol. Didn't plan on this becoming a thing but I'll run with it
Bmore.Tactical yo soon as I heard you say yo. I was like subscribe good to see other Baltimoreans on here we go through some shit when it comes to gun laws as if criminals obey that shit
Been looking for a new red dot for a couple of builds. Was looking at both the MSR and Romeo 5. Your review and the comments have helped me decide on the 5.
This is the first time I've come across one of your videos and honestly I'll keep watching them.
I will say that I can see it both ways. Tactically speaking the last thing you want to be doing in a self defense situation is fumbling with knobs. And I like the motion activated nature of the Romeo5. But at the same time if that situation hits and you have to make an adjustment for some reason, you're gonna want the biggest knobiest adjustment when your fine motor skills are reduced due to the inevitable chemical dump you experience. I have the Romeo 5 and personally love it, but wanted a review on the MSR.
So it really is a matter of preference and training. But whichever one you choose, TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN! Because in a SD situation you're going to fall back to your lowest level of training, and rarely rise to the occasion. Which situation do you want to find yourself relying on in a life or death situation: luck or training and muscle memory?
Great video, brother. Keep it up.
I appreciate your support but you are absolutely right. Whichever one you select you need to train with it and get used to it
Turning on with the knob is a gross motor function that can be done without visual verification, in the dark, etc. - just like flicking off a safety. Auto on/off is NOT preferable if you are out in the field moving or if the weapon is in a vehicle because it will be on when you are not using it. Auto on/off is also exactly one additional point of possible failure for Murphy’s Law. What if it fails to only off? The MSR also comes with flips ups which are important for winter when there is snow. My first red dot was an Aimpoint H2 with no auto features and the MSR is just as good IMO.
The 5 is more for home defense the msr is better in the field.
You don’t have to use auto on and off if you choose not to. Just saying.
You don't want to be turning a dial to change dot brightness (which you should've already adjust beforehand for home defense), but it's okay to be spending time while paused to press buttons. Um, you can dial a change in brightness a lot faster than have to press buttons to cycle through brightness. Having the solar panel on some red dots helps change brightness based on the ambient light level, but then you're into the $300+ red dots. Plus, the buttons are covered with a rubber membrane which eventually wears and tears away exposing the electronics underneath. The dials have an o-ring to seal out water. Dials have been used for around 40+ years (I had an Aimpoint a very long time ago with a dial). Press buttons would be nice if you didn't have to step through each increment at a time, and some include changing the MOA and reticle sizes, so you have even more increments to step through. A twist of the dial is a lot quicker. Most users like the buttons between they look more cool, and are more sleek reducing the profile of the body of the red dot sight. Really comes down to if you want sleek, or bulge. For a carry weapon, sleek would be better, but the rubber membrane doesn't last as long as the o-ring in a dial.
For a plinker, sleek is irrelevant. For home defense, I've had both, and dials are much quicker. Geez, you don't even have to be looking through the red dot to change brightness. For home defense, you're really going to stand there to tell the assailant "No, stop, I have to press some buttons to adjust the brightness, okay, now you can come at me"? Also, a fat dial can be found easier in [near] total darkness versus you trying to find the buttons, and figure out just where to press.
For home defense, perhaps the front and read lenses can be removed. They're valuable when outside, but not when outside. You don't care about glare when inside your home, nor care about a sniper snatching your location. There looks to be screws to let you take off the front and rear lenses.
The motivation activated dot, like Holosun's Shake-Awake, helps to reduce battery consumption. However, I can't see anyone not deliberately powering off the sight when storing it, like in a safe, disabled in a drawer, or trekking to the range. For home defense, who would rely on a claimed longevity rather than replace the battery every year? I buy a slew of batteries, and replace ALL of them in every electric or electronic device for 2 reasons: to ensure the device actually works when I need it, and to eliminate corrosion damage from leaking batteries. I don't like my flashlights getting corroded, so I'd get more ticked off it my red dot sight got its battery contacts corroded.
Talking about batteries, on the Romeo5 the battery compartment is accessed by a frontend cap. For the MSR, the battery is under the cap on the brightness dial. So, both can units can have their batteries replaced without removing them from the rail which would lose the zeroing. The Romeo5 uses a AAA battery, and why the access cap is a cylinder. That is a lot more capacity than the coin cell batteries can hold; however, make sure to use a NiMH AAA battery to use the sight in wider operating temperature ranges (-30C to 75C) than for alkaline batteries (-20C to 40C). The MSR uses a lithium coin cell battery, so less capacity but wider temperature range (-20C to 60C) than an AAA alkaline but less than for an AAA NiMH. You might not be in a comfy air-conditioned home or car when you need to use your weapon. No wonder the Romeo5 has such a long battery life: it has a huge battery, and shake-awake. Would be interesting to see which red dot stays illuminated when constantly on. A lithium CR1632 coin cell battery has typically a 130mAH rating. A NiMH AAA battery is usually rated from 600 to 1200 mAH. Geez, no wonder the Romeo5's battery lasts longer even without shake-awake.
Both those units come with a 2 MOA dot. From what you show, looks more like a 4 MOA dot, or bigger. I do plinking for fun, and varmit shooting, and those dots look just too big for my taste. I'll have to revisit Sig's web site to see which rail-mount /green/ dot sights they have rated for a 1 MOA dot, and which can be enlarged. I suppose that'll move to the expensive units.
vanguard, solid points. I am not sure you are aware there are THREE versions of the Romeo 5, the SOR52001 Romeo5 uses a 2032 (this review) its the SOR52101 and 2102 that use the AAA....
Thanks. Was looking at both, went with Romeo 5 your review helped.
Glad I could help
just bought the MSR and juliet 3x combo to go with my first rifle, a IWI zion 15
What's your thoughts?
Went with the Romeo 5x instead of msr but I love it and the Juliet 3x
@@libertyprime2852 I need to check that out
Just brought that combo what’s ur thoughts on it?
That’s funny cause I have the exact same red dot with the exact same gun lol
what you do is select a dot setting that works both in light and low light condition and leave it on the batt is good for approx 22000 hours depending on what average setting you select for both day and night....
Nice comparison! I am deciding between the two and this helps to get the Romeo5. Both are good and I would probably be happy with MSR too.
I picked up a new Sig Sauer MSR for $109.00 free shipping from Birmingham Pistol Wholesale..... Love the Night Modes for home defense....
I have 3 of the Romeo 5 red dots. Hard to beat.
Yea agreed, I’ve been happy about them.
I had MSR for rifles I use to take for range practice. It is affordable and at the range I do not need these extra features. If it always was 20$ difference I would go with full romeo, but normally it is at least 30$ extra... so screw it. Will go cheapskate but I have bought 3 MSR scopes, two for shoguns and one for a rifle and it works for me.
Yea I agree
You can get the 5 for $99 shipped if you look around. Solid buy for something that's considered "cheap" with great build quality and features.
I got my Romeo 5 for my AR For around 130 at a local gun shop. Great vid man already been subscribed.
I appreciate your support. I really like sig optics as well tho
Each of the numbers marks on the MRS have half marks for turning the optic off. Check the manual. Pick your brightness then turn it one half mark to turn it off. You just have to remember to turn it a half mark to turn it back on.
Demonlord468 thanks!!
@@MrBlane85 NP i wondered about that when i bought mine and noticed the DOT would cut off between numbers and got to looking in the manual and the optic turning off between each number is designed so it can be turned off for extended battery life. Pretty neat feature other than forgetting to turn it back on under stress is the only thing i dont like about it. Think i would like it where it turns on with motion and off after so long not using or moving the weapon personally.
@@Demonlord468 I'm glad you taught me that tho. Thats why I like the Romeo 5 for home defense because it cuts on by itself with motion.
@@MrBlane85 Yeah i think my next one will be the Romeo5. All those Romeo Optics are pretty damn nice for their prices.
Demonlord468 soon I’m gonna need something with increased magnification
Bro I definitely had to double back and watch this. I seen it when it dropped but I don’t think I owned my ARs at the time so it was more so entertainment for me. Now you just helped me decide Romeo 5 Is the better option for me at the time. Good reviews are underrated by far!!! I hate buying anything without some unbiased perspective first.
I try not to buy anything without buy a few reviews first, gotta do my research lol. But you already know I appreciate you supporting me and watching so much of my content. 💯
Bmore.Tactical I’m on gunbuyer and they have an option for $129.99 and $137.50. SOR50,000 and SOR 52,001. Are you familiar with the difference? Is it battery life? I can’t really tell the diff other than price.
Courtne B let me look. I shop gunbuyer pretty often.
Courtne B I’m not seeing the difference, that’s crazy haha
Bmore.Tactical that’s crazy. One probably won’t have a battery or some ish like that.
Ty for the review. Leaning toward the Romeo 5. Like the auto on setting.

Watched your vid and went with the 5. Ordered mine from Brownell for $99 out the door with free shipping! It's pretty much a holosun on a budget which I love and have mostly all holosun red dot and magnifier.
How do you like it
@@krms101 this red dot is great! For the price with an Auto on & off feature and cool looking but solid casing, this thing rocks. I have it on my 8.5" AR and it's been holding zero with well over 1k rnds shot through it.
I can't decide I found the MSR for $73 on Amazon that matches the color of my AR but really like the Auto shut on/off feature
What did you end up going with? In the same situation. MSR or Romeo 5 at double the price.
Ran across a Romeo 5 on wish and pulled the trigger. only $50. Everything so far looks and feels great. Now I'm just testing the auto off, won't be testing the waterproof part tho 😂. Only thing I have noticed so far, is your Romeo 5 seems to be a bit brighter in the video.
If you bought it in wish bro it might not be a legitimate Romeo 5
Yea the ones on Wish/Geek are all clones/knockoffs.. they are high end clones, but clones nonetheless.
Bro got a fake Romeo 5 💀💀💀
Lmaooo he said wish booiiiii
Romeo 5 looks a lot better from the side. IMO Romeo 5 with auto-off and shake awake would be much more practical. Thanks.
I totally agree
Primary arms has the Romeo5 for $109 right now through Memorial Day! Your decision has just been made for you. Never seen a better deal.
Right now the SIG ROMEO MSR is $89.99 at PRIMARY ARMS!
Ive have the Romeo 5 and just picked up the MSR cheap at the pawn for my broomstick. Thanks for the video for my needs.
Good Review, thank you. I have both the ROMEO MSR and the ROMEO 5. In my opinion the ROMEO 5 is far superior to the ROMEO MSR especially for the price difference. I bought the MSR to put on my 1st Generation Sig MCX (a 16” barrel 300 Blk) that I am relegating to just being a collectible, CQB training weapon, and a range toy. The MSR and a set of MagPul MBUS flip up sights are replacing a Vortex Razor 1-6x24 Gen-II E LPVO that had been on this gun. I definitely don’t need the MOTAC feature on an optic that spends most of its time in a gun rack in my gun room. For a gun I will primarily use as a trainer the MSR is a great optic. However, if you are going to use it for anything more than training, I highly recommend stepping it up to the ROMEO 5.
I have both msr and a magnifier on my AR pistol...love jg.
You shoot indoor or outdoor? How the far out have you pushed it?
Both... outdoor I got it at 300...Ive seen ar pistol get over 400 with 3x magnification
@@patrickharvey6979 yea you putting in work
If you want, Sportsmans Warehouse has the Romeo MSR and the Juliet 3 MICRO Magnifier bundle for $299. Pretty good if you are wanting a magnifier as well.
Magnifier pair up with the Romeo 5 good?
Great video and review. Great insight on home defense situations! SALUTE
Thanks for your support
The MSR doesn’t need auto off…. 20,000 hours of battery life is over two years. Leave it on and you’re good to go. If you want to play it safe; replace the battery once a year.
I hate having to have to remember to turn on and off my red dots. With the 5 I don’t have worry about it. That’s the deciding factor for me.
power usage is so low turn it on and leave it on...
Excellent to the point review, picking up the Romeo5 based on this, thank you!
Just got the Romeo 5 look forward to it, thanks for the video 🙌🏽💯
Hope you got a good deal
Mar with how cheap it is I’m thinking of getting on and throwing it on the mp15-22 cause something is better than just irons
Just got one for my 15-22 at PSA store for 79.00 plus tax.😎
I have mixed emotions. With everything going on that $50 difference really makes me want to go with the MSR but also with everything going on the Romeo 5 is IMO the better option.
2wheeled Demon Romeo 5 is better, so if you can swing the extra $50 do it. If you can’t, you won’t hate the MSR

Great video and comparison. I was looking at both of these(as well as the holosun) for my pcc 9mm build. Think I'm leaning more towards the 5.
What did you decide?
@@MrBlane85 went with the 5. It was a tuff decision...especially where I wasn't caring about the shake n wake. (I noticed it turns on when in the vehicle.) But I do like the MSR and I am considering going back for it and using it on a .223 platform
I have the Romeo5 and a few Holosuns... All are very nice but i prefer the Holosuns... It seems the dots are sharper with Holosun... But hard to say, both so close.
For the 5 I just got it. I notice the red dot is a little bloom like not a precise dot, looks blurry is there a way to fix that?
I'm not. rich, but when it comes to optics, get the best you can afford. Missing is free.
Excellent information
Just purchased Romeo MSR
Good video man! Thanks for the info!!
Thanks for checking it out
Not a bad review, but I'd disagree with the whole nob vs button scenario in an emergency. First of all, in an emergency, you're not gonna be fumbling around to mess with your brightness and even if you were, a nob is much more intuitive than trying to mess with those buttons. But trust me, if you're just trying to survive in an emergency the brightness is something you should have set before you go to grab it.
- Larsonious won’t argue your logic, never said I was an expert. And never been in that situation. Appreciate the feedback
@@MrBlane85 Wasn't going for a debate either. Just making an observation, sir. Good review though.

@@MrBlane85 So, I finally picked one up today and GD this nob is hard to turn. Lol. Overall, I really like it but I'm just gonna leave it on setting 5 until it runs out to see how long it'll last. Had to buy a new battery since the one they supplied was completely dead.
@@alucarus6 I like it, its a good optic. Great price too. How much did you pay?
You really think its easier trying to find and repeatedly press little flat rubber buttons, opposed to grabbing and twisting a big textured rotating dial, and doing that in a stressed situation..? You think you're going to be worried about having the perfect dot brightness set when someone is coming to do you harm? Does it really matter if the sight is ever turned off if the batteries still last longer than a 1 or two year maintenance change? These are real things to think about
Your dot on your Romeo looks 1000 times better then mine. My dot is super small and has like sun rays coming off it

Personally, just got the MSR. I like to think of it as a place holder. The place holder before it was a cheap $30 amazon red dot ( OTW 1x20mm red dot) so ive gotten used to training with dials and knobs. The msr is going to be replaced with a high end optic at some point but i really wanted to find an optic for under 150 that wasnt garbage. Pretty much narrows it down to vortex crossfire, bushnell trs 25/26, romeo 5 and romeo msr. Well needless to say the msr was the least expensive so it fulfills the things i need it to until I upgrade to a higher end optic. Should arrive in a week and ill let you guys know how i feel about it.

Never really considered this as an application for home defense as it's not very reasonable for me to use an AR due to how easy it would over penetrate. Almost anything besides a hollow point 9mm or a buck shot would probably kill one of my neighbors.

Thank you for posting your video. I'm glad to learn that the MSR has that drawback with the resetting the brightness... 👍
I would still recommend it tho. I use it on my AR and its easy to adjust. I just like the Romeo 5 a little more.
Which has a slightly bigger window ? Can't tell from the vid.
Romeo5 > Romeo MSR, but I'm not sure it's worth the $30-50 extra. The MSR still has a long battery life and the dots are pretty comparable. I do like that the MSR has a brightness turret instead of buttons, I like that the MSR doesn't require you to take off caps to zero, and I like the flip-up lens covers. Lastly, a Holosun HS403B is not even $20, sometimes not even $10 more than the Romeo5, and the Holosun has a much, much clearer dot than either the Romeo 5 or MSR.
MOTAC is an incredibly nice feature, though, especially on a home defense rifle that spends most of its time in a safe. That means you can leave the optic on and ready to go not just for a few years but, practically speaking, forever.
Good review
