    My personal opinion is to prefer the cr2032 battery as it is a lithium battery. AAA is more readily available but alkaline batteries are prone to leaking which would ruin the optic. Unless you used a lithium AAA which I would assume would be more difficult to find than CR2032. Years of installing electronic security system tells me to avoid alkaline whenever possible.

  • @paulc2548
    @paulc2548 3 года назад +51

    This is a great comparison, thank you. The problem with using AAA alkaline battery is that it WILL leak when you leave it installed and stored for awhile (sometimes less than one year and it will leak all over the place!). I rather use the CR2032 battery for anything that is stored most of the time.

    Maybe it’s me but, the thing about the 2032 battery vs AAAs is not a deal breaker (at least to me). Also, I like the fact that the Romeo 5 sits a bit lower than its bigger brothers. Oh, and I like/trust having caps instead of “exposed” adjusment knobs.

    I purchased a XDR and brought it back for the reason of the front glass. however my gun shop did open a few and we noticed a vast difference in the recess/cant of the glass and it’s depth. It was actually the same and consistent all the way across with the 5x’s however so for that reason I went with the 5x. One of the XDR’s you could see more of the glue/sealant and cant was noticeably different even tho all were off and inconsistent for the XDRs. 3 new 5XDR’s were compared. And 3 5x’s.

    I own three of the fives and their great Optics especially at that price point, in fact I'm about to buy another. I don't care about having fancy turrentine caps or the AAA batterie. In my opinion if they wanted to change and make those upgrades Sig should have discontinued the other older model and just offered the newest upgraded model around the same price point. I'm sure it would have been better for Sig also as they wouldn't have to have three different tooling operations for three different models. I wouldn't mind trying out an XDR but I can't justify the extra hundred bucks for a fancy extra unnecessary reticle. So long as the red dot cowtnesses with my irons that's all I want and need. Something that's going to be rugged and brings my eye on target quicker.

      idk about discontinuing the 5 and only having the x or xdr. lots of people dont want to use AAA battery when cr2032's are much cheaper and can be bought in larger amounts. furthermore lots of people want to use their own aftermarket riser mount which cant be done with the AAA battery versions.

    I know you did this review 5 years ago, but since Sig still sells all three versions it is still relevant. Now with that said, I want to thank you for this review. A couple of the features you showed as upgrades in the 5X and 5XDR to me are downgrades. If a ROMEO 5X or 5XDR were the only red dot I owned then it taking AAA batteries might be important to me, but I have several red dots and most take CR 2032s, so I have a lot of them on hand, making the fact that the ROMEO 5 takes CR2032s a nice feature. The other advantage is that the ROMEO5 has capped turrets, which to me is a huge advantage because a) the caps protect the turrets and b) I don’t have to carry an extra tool to make adjustments if they are needed, because the turret caps [are] the tool. Again, thank you for the review because you have shown to me that the ROMEO 5 is much better for the price than the 5X and 5XDR.

    • @timrobinson6573
      @timrobinson6573 2 года назад +2

      Yea, I agree. Also, having a circle around the dot is not worth double the price for me. It's kind of shameful that Sig markets these as upgrades or advanced models and it's really just minor differences.

    • @jimmyyeakel615
      @jimmyyeakel615 Год назад

      the theory behind the turrets was, that they are raised from the body and therefor subject to damage through impact. The 5x and xdr are recessed and therefor would be harder to damage. The triple A batteries are more readily available at a variety of retail stores and probably a little harder to incorrectly install. They probably account for the slight increase in weight to the site. The 65 moa reticle can also be used as a rough guide for hold overs if you take the time do the "math" for different distances. Also makes for quicker target acquisition if you're not worried about precision shooting.

    Good review here. I prefer the 2032 batteries. Amazon has them super cheap even the Energizer brand. I use them on bow sights too. Is the 2 moa dot size represent 2" @100 yards or meters? Something people don't realize that have never used a red dot is that with practice one can use the top or bottom of the dot for fine shot placement reference. My old Vortec Strikefire with a 3 moa dot lets me hit a 5" diameter plate at 300 yards fairly easily. That's on a ar15 5.56 cal. Taken many coyotes with the red dot set up. I just purchased Romeo 5X and I am noticing that the 2 MOA red dot is not really a dot but more a spherical shape and it looks more like a stain than a perfect dot regardless of illumination setting. This is my first red dot sight, so can someone tell me if this is normal or do I have a defective unit?

      You have astigmatism, go talk to eye doctor also looking into eotech hws, can help for folks with this issue. I have some in one eye, can still use standard led red dots but, it’s never a perfect dot.

    It kind of looks like the original 5 has a few benefits the others dont and vice versa. The caps being able to use as tools, and the ability to use a low mount. On the cons side, is you lose a reticule option and a less common battery. I kind of feel like the original 5 is better even if it were the more expensive option.

    I bought a Romeo5 as my first red dot and I thought I had an astigmatism because the dot was fuzzy. My second red dot was a $60 Bushnell TRS-25 and the dot looks perfectly round. I think my Romeo 5 has something wrong with it.

    I think I got a defective unit...I don't get a bold dot I get something that looks like snowflake....not very solid nor is it very bright....? And yes I did hold down the + button still not very bright. Showing what the red dot is supposed to look like for each unit in the video would have been very helpful.

    1:27 lovely to think that the people who can't put a battery in the right way are going to be operating a firearm, isn't it?
    They literally have a sign in black and white indicating which way the negative terminal of the battery goes as soon as you unscrew the cap.
    And there is an instruction manual that very clearly states what you just said. Man...

      I agree. Unless you’re shooting long range and dialing in versus holding over, I am of the belief that elevation and turret knobs should be capped. I doubt many people are looking to shoot at distance and dial in with a 2 MOA non-magnified red dot. I suspect most, myself included, sight in their red dot and then never mess with windage and elevation unless I lose zero, mount on a different gun, or wish to change to a different zero.

    Hey there. Is there a reason that you know of about the 5x and 5xdr not shown in the dog Sauer website? They only have the Romeo 5. I've been trying to find a comparison between the Romeo 5x and the sparc ar from vortex. Lots of articles compare the sparc ar with the Romeo 5 but I think this is an incorrect comparison and it seems to be about similar to the 5x... There isn't much info about the 5x anywhere but this video.

    For those who don't compete a lot , who aren't in Law Enforcement , or an 'operator" in the military:
    If you are an average Joe/Jane,... for home defense and/or general shooting get a:

    This is a tough, proven, holds zero for years, auto on, auto off, red dot sight. Don't spend a lot for an optic brothers.
    NOTE: The SIG Romeo 5 cost the same as the Holosun.
