To be fair, he made a decent point that people overseas that watch Japanese anime do so because they WANT the Japanese style of animation. Trying to change that for the sake of Westerners would likely be doing a disservice to both Japanese viewers AND foreign viewers.
Well, they get their funding from Japanese watchers more. If Westerners gave more money, then they'll listen to them. It's only a matter of time.

There’s some confusing or misleading wording used in some parts of the video, I’d like to clear those up here!
In 2:07, it’s mentioned that the layouts come from the animation directors, but this may give the impression that ADs are the ones who draw those layouts. In reality, the key animators draw the layouts, and then ADs make corrections to those. After that comes the genga phase, where a key animator (who may or may not be the same person who drew the layouts) will apply these corrections and draw the cleaned-up keyframes. This is the phase the animator is working on in the video. (There may also be additional corrections from animation directors after this phase.)
In 11:40, Gigguk’s asking about the amount of background artists per episode. Fujishiro says it’s about five, but he was really only talking about the studio’s own in-house background artists. There is of course outsourcing involved for this part of the production as well, and most studios, including J.C.Staff, cannot produce all the background art by themselves. In addition, many backgrounds tend to be reused across episodes (with slight modifications), so it’s not like you actually get hundreds of unique backgrounds drawn per episode.
in 16:24, the subtitles say “filming”, but a more common translation for 撮影 in this context is photography. But as the process in anime doesn’t involve photographing anymore, the most accurate term for the process nowadays is *compositing* (this term is commonly used in Japanese as well).
Big brain!
Thanks for the clarification. I agree that it's very important to know the correct info when understanding how animation companies work.
Big brain
Also, when talking about wanting to do "long running projects like one piece or dragon ball" he was actually specifying something like 3 or 4 cours, and I get the feeling that the example of series was less of a "we want to make a 900+ episode giga project" and more getting enough room to stretch your planning and writing muscles (e.g. being motivated to put in the work to set up payoffs for the future that you know will come, since you're basically booked for it, while also getting complete control over pacing etc.) without being constrained to the 1 cour they got

Imagine if Hollywood actually "prepared like an exam" reading source material when adapting video games, books, and comic movies. What a NOVEL idea.
They do. However there's more creative freedom in Hollywood that allows for plot lines that make more sense to sell movie tickets than they do to adapt the source material.
95% of production actually do that. It' s the executives that often goes "But why there isn' t a sex scene for western market thoo?"
It's exactly how it can sometimes happens to anime, with the "fanservice" or other things. Every market cater towards his audience.

Also don't lie Garnt I know you were looking for anything Railgun or Index related
Ikr. Railgun 3 was like the best season so far of both Index/Railgun ;)
Hopefully anime studios will open up even more in the future. I really appreciate Garnt and Joey introducing us to the inner workings of the studios.
Alright Team! You heard him. We need to find that man's binoculars!
This was a great video, I hope you can do more like it in the future. It was great seeing JC Staff at work and learning some new things. I didn't realize they were still doing so much on paper and figured everything was just digital now.
This would make a great bluray extra on any home release too!
You know a show is funny when even the staff are laughing while making it. I'm glad that they're having fun doing their work.
Gigguk finally went to his dreamland.
Always love seeing the studio animation process!
(And to the one worker who had Nightmare band merch at her workspace, you're appreciated~)
Thank You and J. C. Staff for this wonderful opportunity. I've never dreamed of a day where I can see the inner working of a big anime studio. I wish I could like this video 1000x times.
Well finally something I was really curious about (how anime gets made in these studios) and it gets recommended to me.
*Thanks Gigguk senpai but in all honesty, I RESPECT these people working at these anime studios working insane work hours to give us quality material animes us to enjoy.*
Thank you for these insights! I hope one day you get to do a long version of this!
This is a actually very insightful and interesting
Should have asked when the next toaru adaptation is coming out
Let's wait for another 7-10 years for another Toaru announce, but it was sure that they're waiting for Railgun to have enough material so that they can Milk Index to adapt the next Railgun Arc
„…if anyone finds it, I’d appreciate it if you could return it.“
Give this man some binoculars
Gigguk is a GOAT at making great anime/manga content on RUclips we gotta give him more credit.
He's the rightful King and Syd his Dom Queen
This just makes me appreciate Mappas season 4 because it only took them four months to make that honestly i wish people would be more appreciative they work so hard and i say this to all art studios
Same thing with OPM S2 which they had to work on from 4 months to less than 2 months
Petition for Gigguk to go to a hanime studio and see how it's made
What a legend
Thank you so much Gigguk, me being oversees and getting to appreciate the inside of an anime industry was phenomenal
And that you got to speak with the director himself as well as various staff was...dude! Seriously one of the best videos I've seen
