At 72 years old I've loved and listened to this song for most of my life. Seeing it through your unique perspective was amazing! Thanks for sharing your experience,!
True story...I graduated high school in the suburbs of Los Angeles in 1979 at the height of the best rock ever. This song was already "old" but became a last dance anthem at our school dances. It starts out like a slow song and let's you cuddle up for a long time maybe sneak in a kiss. By the last verse, we were all rocking out and singing the lyrics as everybody knew them. As the song finishes, you knew the dance was over but always left with an invigorating feeling. I was so blessed to be born at such a time. And as we wind on down the road...
Zepplin is in a league all their own. There was and still is no Rock Band ever to compare them to. I also love the blues style they incorparated in Nobody's Fault But Mine, Ramble On, Bring It On Home and When The Levee Breaks. Robert Plant on the harmonica is masterful. Jimmy Page and John Bonham on the drums completes those epic songs.❤Stay safe
There's a big reason why 'Stairway to Heaven' is the #1 song on rock radio of all time and is still being played on classic rock and modern rock stations... It inspired almost every single rock/ metal band that came after... Even Elvis Presley had heard it and loved the song because his daughter Lisa Marie Presley was a Led Zeppelin fan. The members of Led Zeppelin were huge Elvis fans and were invited to Graceland to meet 'the King'... and they got along very well, apparently... Robert Plant was in heaven meeting his idol. They were devastated when Elvis died in 1977 in what was a terrible year for Led Zeppelin...
So glad you listened to this version. Live ones were tough back then. They were on lots of drugs during their concerts. So were the attendees. One of my all time favorites that never gets old. ❤
I've heard this song 8956 times since the 1970's, and not once did I realize that the song itself is constructed like a stairway. You caught that on the first listen. Hats off to you! 🤠
That's only 169 times per year and only 3 times per week. I have been listening to Rock/Classic Rock radio since 1976 and had the radio on at work and after work, at home, and sometimes hear 2 times in a day. That means I have heard this easily, 12,000 times.
@@bnparts90 I forgot to mention that I listened to the Dolly Parton version another 3100 times, which pushes my number to 12,056 times. (Yes, there is a Dolly Parton version. 😂 Very different from the original, of course, but still pretty good, imho.)
Awesome that you went back to listen to the original recording. Too many reactors who make the mistake of starting with the live version (and then Heart's cover version) never go back to hear the original masterpiece. In the future, I would highly recommend always listening to the original studio recordings of Led Zeppelin first (don't pay attention to the naysayers in the comment section). Also, I recommend listening to the original studio recording of the song "Since I've Been Loving You" next. It will touch your soul! So much better that the MSG version which is always so highly touted by those in the comment section. Peace .
I was a slight oddity in the 80’s. A southern girl in love with Led Zeppelin. When I first heard this one, I saw though the lyrics, “man’s attempt to build its own false destiny”. I immediately went to The Tower of Babel a described in the Bible in Genesis 11:1-9. “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” Keep on Rocking! ☮️🎶✝️
I met my future wife in middle school. We danced to this song at the last dance of the 8th grade. My family moved away from there in 1979. We reconnected in 2014 and just celebrated our 9th anniversary. Stairway to Heaven will always hold a special place in my heart.
Guess what? It is actually a flute. In fact, in most languages, and that includes English before the instrument also becoming to be called recorder, is called just flute, while the name of the other instrument is the “transversal flute”.
@LeonardoPostacchini thanks for that tid-bit. While both may technically be classified as "flutes", but when BP mentioned it being a flute, I am sure he was picturing the standard chorus type flute (aka transversal flute), and not the plastic recorder instrument that is the introduced to most children in Elementary schoool music class. It always just amazed me that JPJ used a kids instrument in arguably the greatest Rock song of all time.
@ what you call the recorder, is not a kids flute, there are professional versions of it, there are professionals specialists who play the flute and there are classic pieces written for those flutes. It is not “technically” a kind of flute, it is in fact the flute, the one you are calling flute is the one that is a kind of flute, the transversal one.
@ btw, here is the solution to your mystery, he did not choose a kids instrument, he chose a traditional instrument, one that had the right sound for the music. The flute is known for producing almost no harmonic overtones, less than any other instrument, it sounds “pure” because of that and is associated with divine or angelic.
@@LeonardoPostacchini Apparently this is your subject of expertise. It is definitely not mine. However, if you pole 100 random people on the street, I think most if not all would probably have the same interpretation of what is a flute and what a recorder is that I have stated. Certainly that is through our own ignorance on the subject, but it is what it is, and with that, going back my original comment to BP, while I may be incorrect in my assumption, but I do believe that when he said “flute” he was referring to what I mentioned above. Regardless, you are probably right. ✌️
I've commented before ,having followed Led Zeppelin since I bought their 1st album when it was released over 50 yrs ago and every album there after suffice to say i know every song , lyrics even most guitar parts ,drums ,little changes ,when they occur ,etc, etc...big fan always have been and still am. I've also seen them live. They were a group who toured constantly, worked like crazy and partied just as crazy....their live performances weren't always the best because of the road lifestyle and the toll it took. Their albums are magic ,works of art and in my opinion BP is what you should focus on. I know from watching your show you prefer live performances but there aren't many filmed of Led Zeps concerts. Play more of their music and just listen ☮️
A subscriber funded radio station in California, was asking for 10dollar donations to play stairway to heaven. Robert Plant rang the station to say if they don't play it he will give them 10,000 dollars not to play it! Stairway to Heaven 1971... journey of the spirit after death!! THE 70s indeed an unmatched music era... BEST decade for popular music, it's influence on modern music gave birth to many new & cool genres!! WOW!! Time flies.
Your reaction is the real deal. THIS song has always been considered as one of the top 3 rock songs ever in the rock & roll 500. It's just magical... and like you said... It just builds to the end.
If I had to pick just one song to represent all of classic rock, I don't know how it could be any other song besides Stairway to Heaven. It has always been that huge, like it came into the world that way and never diminished 👍😎
Led Zeppelin wanted the audience to listen to the songs on the whole album. It is the best experience. Take some time one day to just play a whole album to feel how each song builds towards the whole.
Some radio stations on Memorial Day weekend have a countdown of the top 100 rock songs of all time. This usually comes in at number one . A few decades ago a radio station cut to the chase and just played Stairway to Heaven all weekend. "Ok, that was Stairway to Heaven. Coming up next is a song by Led Zeppelin, Stairway to Heaven!".
You really have to listen to Heart's version played at the Kennedy Center. They even had a choir. And the drummers son was playing. Robert Plant was brought to tears.
Robert Plant said that the lyrics he wrote for this definitely open to interpretation. They have a lot of great songs , Ten Years Gone , Misty Mountain Hop, No Quarter , my favorite is Fool in the rain though.
Greatest Rock and Roll band of all time. Greatest front man, greatest drummer, one of the greatest guitarist last, one of the greatest bassists and keyboardists. 100 of 100. The best. These four dudes are perfection.

There is a great BBC interview on RUclips in which Jimmy Page talks about the creation of Stairway. Has about 14 millions views. And you are right, it is art.
Live versions of songs are great but, the studio versions are what we all remember hearing first and they are the foundation for the live performance. I will take the studio version over the live every time.
@@lindalou6105indeed. A couple Springsteen songs, The Flood, spirits in the night are WAY better in the live at Hammersmith version than the studio version, cheap trick is much better live, Peter Frampton is better live. But this, I think, is better as the studio version.

Led Zeppelin. They were in a class of their own. Once you've heard their music, you recognize it every time. One of the few bands that I never have to be in a particular mood to fully enjoy. Anytime is great time for some Led Zep.
Jimmy Page, Led Delle lines guitarist, once was quoted as saying about Stairway to Heaven musically was, "Whispering to a Hurricane." And I love his quote. John Bonham, the drummer, had difficulty learning to play the song due to the quickening tempo and timing. As you can hear, he finally mastered it. Thank you for your reaction and commt
Stairway to Heaven, by Heart - Kennedy Center Honors doing a cover of this with the remaining members of Led Zeppelin being honored. The late drummer John Bonham's son Jason, drums with Heart on his fathers original drum kit. A must watch. Brings tears to the eyes. The bolo hats the choir and Jason wore were a also a throwback to the the late John Bonham who wore one. Robert Plant was told Jason couldn't make it, then was able to show up at the last minute. Big surprise.
Wil NEVER EVER git tired of listening to this truly, literally epic song. Did you ever get around to Peter Frampton Live - Do you FeeLike We Do? Another MASSIVE masterpiece from the 70s
Honestly never noticed that. You have to be right. There is no way its not that. You def nailed that. I agree. Totally ascends the whole time. I just always get lost in it snd never thought about that. Wow good job
Your absolutely right, it IS like a stairway. In the decades I've listened to it, I've never thought of it in that way. I've had more goosebumps than I could count, but decipher the meaning? You're way closer than I am!
This is one of those songs you want to hear the studio version first for all the technical mastery. Then you can watch and appreciate a live performance, but you know the layers in your head and get the live performance skill differently.
Part of the impetus for Jimmy Paige was that, when he was younger, he was a session musician and he was always admonished to play at a constant, steady pace. He wanted to change tempo and this song was the vehicle for doing so.
Your analogy just blew me away. Never thought of this song like a stairway.

😂😂 8956 times! Right? 😂😂 Thanks for that giggle
There's a video of Jimmy explaining how this song was made!
When this comes on while driving you make sure your destination is farther and takes longer than the song lasts.❤️🔥
you are correct. constant building crescendo throughout the song. so rare, and incredibly difficult to pull off. its what makes this song so special
Never comes down, you plato because your there❤❤
❤ seen in concert have many albums awesome times awesome memories ❤❤❤
Been a fan for over 50 yrs, nothing more to say, the gods of rock ❤🙏
Awesome that you went back to listen to the original recording. Too many reactors who make the mistake of starting with the live version (and then Heart's cover version) never go back to hear the original masterpiece. In the future, I would highly recommend always listening to the original studio recordings of Led Zeppelin first (don't pay attention to the naysayers in the comment section). Also, I recommend listening to the original studio recording of the song "Since I've Been Loving You" next. It will touch your soul! So much better that the MSG version which is always so highly touted by those in the comment section.
Peace .
This one piece is a masterclass in writing. Lyrics, vocals, orchestration, production…
This is just the greatest piece of music I've ever listened to!
I agree!!!
@Kev, do try a moment of Scherezade. A truly moving comp. Close your eyes as it takes you where Jimmy and John and John and Robert take you here.
“Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
Keep on Rocking! ☮️🎶✝️
I met my future wife in middle school. We danced to this song at the last dance of the 8th grade.
My family moved away from there in 1979. We reconnected in 2014 and just celebrated our 9th anniversary. Stairway to Heaven will always hold a special place in my heart.
What a sweet story! You are lucky to have re-found each other!! I hope you have many happy and healthy years together!!
Awesome!🥰🤘
Awww ❤❤ that's awesome
Congrats Rick. May you two enjoy this song together until your very last breaths.
It's actually not a flute, but rather a recorder. Yes, like the one you played hot cross buns on in 3rd grade lol. JPJ was/is a phenomenal musician.
Raised on Led Zeppelin as I have an older Brother. This never ages, classic that will still be played in hundreds of years time. Mind blowing music. ❤
Black,P. Stairway was RELEASED in 1971 And still one of the MOST POPULAR SONGS OF ALL TIME
I've listened to this song for 50 years and THANK YOU for I'd never put the build and Stairway together! ❤ FRESH EYES!❤
I remember them saying on the radio, when I was a kid, that this was the most requested song in America for a full ten year period.
A subscriber funded radio station in California, was asking for 10dollar donations to play stairway to heaven. Robert Plant rang the station to say if they don't play it he will give them 10,000 dollars not to play it! He drove many miles to deliver cash and told them that they could not play it until someone gave 10,001 dollars. When asked why he said he i😮
When asked why he said he was sick of it! He said it was a load of shit, they must have been on acid when it was written
@@stevestacey5272 He is definitely tired of the song.
You're not tripping! I've always heard this music as a stairway ascending to Heaven! 👏👏👏
The greatest rock song ever written! Over 50 yrs old & still no one has done it better - Led Zeppelin from East London, mind blowing talents & yes exactly, a crescendo all the way into heaven!
Best rock n roll band ever in my opinion. So much so when my son was three I introduced him to them and every time they were on the radio I said Who’s the greatest rock n roll band ever? And his sweet little voice would say Wed Zepwin lol and at 24 he still loves them!
Stairway to Heaven 1971... journey of the spirit after death!! THE 70s indeed an unmatched music era... BEST decade for popular music, it's influence on modern music gave birth to many new & cool genres!! WOW!! Time flies.
Yes and the 70s began in 68😊
Your reaction is the real deal.
This song was released 53 years ago and still the greatest song ever made and it always will be☝️ LED ZEPPELIN FOR LIFE!!!
Those comments about listening to just the audio are spot on!
Heard this song hundreds of times. Never gets old, never.
i have to give you credit, for your crash course in 50 years of mostly rock music. pretty massive endeavor. kudos.
Led Zeppelin never disappoints.
You really have to listen to Heart's version played at the Kennedy Center. They even had a choir. And the drummers son was playing. Robert Plant was brought to tears.
You gotta check out more Led Zeppelin! They are THE most legendary rock band. I'd suggest their song Babe I'm Gonna Leave You next.
Released November 8th, 1971!! The year I graduated from High School!! Everyone loved it!!! Brings back so many great memories!!
One of the greatest songs ever
On FM Radio from the 70's though the 90's it always won greatest rock song of all time
Robert Plant said that the lyrics he wrote for this definitely open to interpretation. They have a lot of great songs , Ten Years Gone , Misty Mountain Hop, No Quarter , my favorite is Fool in the rain though.
This song is one of the all time greats!
Greatest Rock and Roll band of all time. Greatest front man, greatest drummer, one of the greatest guitarist last, one of the greatest bassists and keyboardists. 100 of 100. The best. These four dudes are perfection.
at 71 years old,,,this one still moves me,,,,just the sound and flow of the music,,,,,
BP - you got it and you don't even smoke. Lol I'm so happy you enjoyed this. It's ingrained in our teen-hood. I think we all can see what was happening in our past. Sitting on car hoods, listening to great music with friends..
Greatest song ever....!
Hands down this is the best version of the greatest song ever recorded!
Whole lotta love another great song 💓
There is a great BBC interview on RUclips in which Jimmy Page talks about the creation of Stairway. Has about 14 millions views. And you are right, it is art.
You need to listen to When The Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin or What Is and What Shokld Never Be both are amazing Led Zeppelin songs.
Live versions of songs are great but, the studio versions are what we all remember hearing first and they are the foundation for the live performance. I will take the studio version over the live every time.
Depends. Some artists are better live than others.
@@lindalou6105indeed. A couple Springsteen songs, The Flood, spirits in the night are WAY better in the live at Hammersmith version than the studio version, cheap trick is much better live, Peter Frampton is better live. But this, I think, is better as the studio version.
Welcome to my world man I really dig your station and your reactions. You’re a young man. I grew up with this Led Zeppelin, Doobie Brothers, Elvis all of them 60s and 70s rock thanks for all you do man I really enjoy the channel.
Proof that Ann Wilson is the female Robert Plant.
He has reacted to that one also.
Wil NEVER EVER git tired of listening to this truly, literally epic song. Did you ever get around to Peter Frampton Live - Do you FeeLike We Do? Another MASSIVE masterpiece from the 70s
GREATEST ROCK AND ROLL SONG EVER for me!!❤️❤️❤️😍
Best ever! ❤️🙏
Honestly never noticed that. You have to be right. There is no way its not that. You def nailed that. I agree. Totally ascends the whole time. I just always get lost in it snd never thought about that. Wow good job
This is on my list of perfect songs.
Theme song for our Senior Prom, 1973. 🥰
And yes, the studio version is the best.
Never gets old♥️🎶
Part of the impetus for Jimmy Paige was that, when he was younger, he was a session musician and he was always admonished to play at a constant, steady pace. He wanted to change tempo and this song was the vehicle for doing so.
You need to do there Kennedy Center honors with Heart singing this for them it's awesome and will blow your mind with how good it is!!!
