I love to hear people's thoughts behind ordering super custom drums like this. Those are some interesting shell choices, but it seems like that's what you knew you wanted, and I'm all about the FAST tom sizes for the reasons you spoke about. I hope they came out better than you imagined. 🤘

I strongly agree with the idea of the flow of sizes. ... struggle to understand the jump from 12x8 all the way to a 16x16...seems like there's no continuum there
Beautiful kit! Sounds great out of the box too! I've got ESE Bearing Edges on my Cherry HVLT Rack Toms [8, 10, 12] & I love the longer sustain on the smaller Toms! Dark, Deep & sustaining! I went a bit different on the Floor Toms [Cherry VLT & Cherry X] for the 14 & 16. My 22 Kick is VLX. Feel like I could have went VLX++ but it's still pretty deep & low pitched. Natural to Regal Blue Fade over Exotic Olive Ash Burl. I almost went Cherry/Mahogany like yours but I opted to leave the Mahogany out and go for the full Cherry Experience. Next kit I'm planning on mixing a ton of different woods. Interested to see how you like the Purplecore Maple Kick. I don't think that was an option when I got mine. Purpleheart Snares are really good! That thing should be cracking! Enjoy!!
I think generally yes, especially when you get into the finish. Usually the floor model don't have the nicer finishes (exotic finish, fades or bursts, or different colored hardware). You certainly have more options when custom ordering, and you'll pay for each option you ask for. 😉
I worked with a place called Drum Center of Portsmouth. They are within driving distance from me. I knew most of the specs I wanted going into this, but they helped facilitate some questions I had (which they sent to DW on my behalf) and then put the order in.
