  • So the F1 Goat debate is one that will never be settled. Never. You could have a driver go into the double digits in terms of world titles and there would still be differing opinions. The older generation will have different experiences of how hard it was to driver a car, the levels of support from teams on a radio. So many different factors.
    Personally, when an F1 driver or legend speaks I sit up and listen. Becuase i'm just a guy in box room making videos. They know alot more than me. So rather than go over the same old stats. Lets' look at what some F1 legends and Big personalities in the sport have to say about who they think is the F1's greatest driver of all time.

      Jim Clark - simply look at race starts/poles, fastest laps etc to wins, this when his car repeatedly kept breaking.
      Also - Indy win, touring cars, sport cars, even driving an ERA.
      Unlike the one trick ponies today.

Winning at Spa with all the above going on and to win over 4 minutes! Won Indy 500 by over 2 mins too! (Doesn’t that mean he lapped the entire field!?)

      Honourable mention to my GOAT runner-up, Juan Manuel Fangio; Take his iron discipline & remarkable talent, but replace the nearly 50 year old man with a mid-20s man with today’s modern diet/fitness, modern cars, safer tracks, OH BOY you’d have a version of Fangio that’d be tearing up the Grand Prix season & giving Clark an almighty title challenge!

    Lewis is a one dimensional driver. Give him the best car; and he can do the job. Give him a car that's anything less than the best; and he struggles for points
    Michael, on the other hand, was THE most well-rounded driver in the history of the sport. Regardless of what anyone can say about questionable tactics, Michael was involved in EVERY aspect of the Team... not just driving. His feedback was on another level. He was able to provide the Team with valuable information, after a few laps, which can only be matched by today's modern technology. Even then, the ability to push the car to a limit that other drivers would be afraid to approach, was one of his stronger qualities. The _"feel"_ of the car, as it hit each corner, each bump, etc... was something that he could read above and beyond anyone else.
    The way that Formula One has essentially replaced every aspect of racing with technology controlled by the Team, except the actual driving, it has reduced F1 to a level that is closer to radio controlled cars than ever before. Gone are the days when we can genuinely see a driver work his magic by putting cars on pole, or winning, when it had no business being there. Michael did it for years, which is why he was THE GUY to beat for most of his career.
    Put Lewis in the Haas; and if he can help them develop the car to the point of winning championships, then talk to me about who the GOAT is. Until then, he's just a competent driver in the best car. Period!

    • @davidius74
      @davidius74 2 месяца назад +1

      Not only that but Michael's fitness regime was second to none. back then most drivers didn't really put much thought into fitness until Michael came along. Ever since then EVERY driver has a strict fitness regime.
      Also back in the 80's and 90's When Prost, Senna and Mansell were at their prime and the start of Michael's career the cars had a lot more reliability issues, the cars were a lot more even with a lot more drivers capable of winning races. It made the racing more intense as every driver had to look after their car while also trying to give it their all. Now though with all the telemetry in the cars, the teams can tell the driver if their is a slight fluctuation on ANY component of the car including the aero and then they can adjust things via the laptops in the garage to get it all back right. You never had that 20, 30 40 years ago and beyond.

    • @MickPsyphon
      @MickPsyphon 2 месяца назад

      @@davidius74
      Good point! Michael understood how physical fitness gave him an edge over drivers with better equipment. It gave him the stamina to push harder and for much longer.
      When you looked at the top 3 finishers when Michael won, you clearly saw the difference it made. Michael was full of energy; and barely broke a sweat, while the others looked haggard, yet happy; and clearly sweating in their coveralls. They were the first to grab a towel to dry their faces.
      Michael was the first to bring his own gym set and bicycle for working out at each race. He was diligent about his fitness regimen.
      I laugh when I hear modern F1 drivers speak of how Hamilton's physique is a natural for F1. He works out just as much as Michael did; and has Michael NOT introduced the physical fitness regimen to his F1 preparation, who knows whether Hamilton would be working out as much as he did and does. Young drivers only do it, because Michael demonstrated how vital it is to a driver's success.

Six times monaco wins enough for me five of them consecutive, to win a race by using only sixth gear, fliying qualifying laps 1.5 sec faster than a teammate multipl world champion in the same car, unbeliavable defence to williams Renault which has active suspontion and telemetry systems ( all of them are resticted later) which is the best car of all time in monaco 1992, Lap of God in donington park in a rainy weather he started in sixth pole position and he was the leader before first lap ending and schumacher was still in fifth place, races in rainy days like in a dry..... .very early lost..RIP

    It's that thing. Micheal said Ayrton and that he wouldn't have won the titles he had if Ayrton had lived. He also listed Fangio. Fangio and Ayrton both said Jim Clark. It's impossible to say because career length and differences in reliability make numbers a bit meaningless. Jackie Stewart only took part in 99 GP so how can you compare his numbers to someone more recent. He saw more of his friends die than some drivers with 99 starts have had point scoring finishes, it was a different world. Enzo said Tazio was the best. It was one of the reasons he loved Gilles Villeneuve was because he reminded him of Tazio. So many great drivers worth of respect through the generations. Enjoyable video as always 👍

      Prost and Senna are both incredibly overrated.
      F1metrics mathematical model believes they aren't even in the top 10 of all time. this is an incredibly objective model that relies on team mate chains (e.g you can link Senna and Prost to Schumacher using Mansell and Piquet or Mansell and patrese as Schumacher was team mates with both Piquet and Patrese). You can account for age related decline and also Schumacher's lack of experience when he faced both Piquet and patrese. In whatever case you consider, Schumacher looks significantly better. There are better drivers that fit between Schumacher and Prost/Senna in terms of relative performance.

    Both Schumacher and Hamilton were part of the most dominant team eras ever, Ferrari 2000s and Mercedes Hybrid... You could hardly do bad with those cars.
    Fangio on the other hand... Was so dominant and won with 4 different manufacturers in an era where the driver mattered far more than nowadays, plus that was an era where if you made a critical mistake, you could die.

    • @ey1615
      @ey1615 Год назад

      Fangio always found himself in the best car though….
      Competition was also lower back then. Also much less races.
      Also you can't equalise the dominance of Ferrari & Mercedes. Mercedes dominance was far worse.
      Mercedes:
      2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020: 7 WDCs in a row, 1 of them not even Hamilton
      2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021: 8 WCCs in a row
      Ferrari:
      2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004: 5 WDCs in a row, all with Schumacher
      1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004: 6 WCCs in a row
      That's 5 WDCs VS 7 WDCs and 6 WCCs VS 8 WCCs
      Mercedes was on the top for 2 years longer.
      Mercedes also built more dominant cars. 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2020.
      Ferrari only built a dominant car in 2002 & 2004.

The claim might be true for Mercedes era, but Ferrari was indeed only 2002 and 2004 dominant. In 2001 Mclaren and BMW had too many DNF's and driver errors to have a chance. I think the GOAT of formula 1 was Niki Lauda and its a bit sad that not mor people would agree to this statement.
    As i see it i rate winning the championship with multiple teams higher than winning a bunch with just 1
    No doubt about it on a qualifying lap Senna was the quickest but F1 is so much more than that it's all about having the patience and knowledge needed to build a team arround you to get the result you want.
    Look at Vettel he's won 4 championships but nobody has him in the goat debate because he never was able to win it at Ferrari. If he had Lost in 2010 and 2012 but won it in 2017 and 2018 then he would be in talks as the goat for sure.
    Niki is litterally the only driver to buy his way into the sport, get his face burnt off and lungs permanently damaged in a firery crash and still nearly win the championship that same year only losing by 1 single point.
    He retired from F1 and came back to beat Alain fucking Prost in the same machinery to win the title the same guy who would go on to match and beat Senna in a number of championships.
    Lewis Hamilton owe's 6 of his 7 championships to Niki for convincing him to move to Mercedes when he did, he has a legacy with so many teams in the sport and did it all.
    This is why i think Niki Deserves to be in the GOAT discussion because nobody none of the traditional "goats" did what he did.

    Fangio and Ascari. It gets tiring to hear these discussions without tipping our hat to the forefathers. By probably the only criteria that eliminates variables like the number of races per season, the mortality rates attributed to ever improving safety etc., the percentage of wins/ races entered is about the most straight forward and accurate single metric. While this can't account for things like the dominance of a particular car/s or team(example being Merc...notice Lewis struggles when not in a dominate car) Fangio and Ascari were significantly better racing drivers.

    • @Mark-zk3gu
      @Mark-zk3gu 2 года назад +2

      Fangio, Ascari, Stewart, Clark, and Moss are the 5 drivers from past Formula 1 who were a different breed. F1metrics, an objective mathematical model, also completely agrees with this assertion, as all 5 of these drivers are in the top 10 of all time.

    • @void9720
      @void9720 3 месяца назад

      Ascari particularly gets underrated a lot (not that people always rave about Fangio, but people talking about the period between 1950 and 1955 often mention Fangio whilst neglecting just how amazing Ascari was). I’m not sure if it was the way he dominated 1952 given that the Ferrari was the only good car of this year, plus the absence of Fangio. I was not alive at this time so I have no personal experience, but from what I’ve heard - whilst Fangio was clearly absolutely incredible, Ascari was the only one even remotely close until Stirling Moss joined Mercedes in 1955. When Ascari died in 1955, Fangio said that he had lost his greatest opponent. It is good to see that Ascari gets mentioned along with Fangio in that regard.

    The idea that Schumacher had more competition because of Mansell, Senna, etc. is laughable. Mansell and Schumacher literally only shared one full season together, 1992. Same with Prost -- 1993. Senna was tragically killed in 1994, the first year Schumacher had a title-challenging car. The greats of the previous generation were gone, and I would argue that, right up until 2005, Schumacher only had one truly worthy opponent, Mika Häkkinen. And to a lesser extent Damon Hill.
    Clark, Senna and Hamilton, however, all had a plethora of very talented rivals to fight in their time. It's Schumacher (and probably Fangio too) who had the LEAST amount of competition from fellow drivers, because their careers coincided with periods where there were less other great talents on the grid.
