It was easier for a man to be a '"man" when his salary alone was good enough for the entire family. The family structure was simple and gender roles easier to meet. We became so materialistic at the same time no raise in pay for almost 40 years. Demanding life now forces both men and women to work and still they fall short. How much stuff did the wife and kids need in the 1900s compared to now? Even the quality of products you bought was better and lasted longer.
