People are complaining? That's funny. What's to complain about. Sony made a very smart decision going with a industry standard (M.2 PCI-E 4.0 NVME) for storage expansion. Means users have tons of choices/competition for drives, the install is extremely easy. Even if you are not someone that builds their own gaming PC (not saying that's hard by any means to be clear) or very tech savvy at all. Pick a drive, which is easy, just look for the "PS5 Compatible" logo. Then pop the cover of, remove two screws insert the drive, replace the screws and cover and done. Microsoft's approach is obv even simpler. It works like the old memory cards. Which is cool, the portability etc. But the price ($150 for the 1TB right now on Amazon US) isn't that great. You can get a Samsung 990 Pro 1TB for $130, which has significantly higher I/O performance (and you could use it in a PC/laptop later at some point if you wanted).
Seriously, how bloody brilliant is Sony? This is one of the easiest way to expand storage I've ever see. And as a owner of both PS5 and a gaming PC, i wish it was as easy as this on my PC
I particularly appreciated the specific but simple method for removing the faceplate that was stated. I think the face plates are a fantastic design choice by Sony. With other consoles, to get off the shell, you had to faff around with lots of tiny screws, of which could easily go missing. Plus, it took time. However, with the PS5, there's no such thing. It literally just has 2 plates which come off with ease, and you can get to the inner parts in minutes. Also, not only is expansion super easy, but they have a dedicated separate slot from the main SSD, so you don't have to replace one for the other, a new SSD will simply add to the total storage, which is great. Furthermore, the plates are so simplistic, that it allows one to easily buy a custom pair, to make their console look unique by replacing the white ones. I recently bought black plates that are sized 1:1 with the console, which make it look more compact and neat, plus, these new plates I have also have a vent on each side for the fan. something NOT mentioned here was how easily the storage screw strips. very likely you will need to use pliers to grip the screw and the spacer in order to remove it as even the phillips #1 screwdriver stripped my screw immediately with barely any pressure.
Use a #1 or 0 and keep downward pressure on until it "breaks free" on its loose it's simple. That's true of any nut, bolt or screw. Crack it then remove it
@@X_PATHOGEN_X I ended up using pliers to grip the screw and spacer to rotate it and it worked. I didn’t have a replacement screw so I used the same screw with pliers after I installed my firecuda SSD.
I might get one down the road, but at the moment, I find adding games to my console storage when I want to play them and the rest of them on a external HDD, helps me focus on playing and actually beating one or two games instead of playing one game and half way through jumping to another game. FYI to anyone looking to do this. It is a horribly cheap standoff screw that strips immediately when trying to remove, you can find forums with what to buy to replace the one either stuck in your PlayStation or stuck out of it.
@@zackmorris1419 ah yes of course, thank you for this valuable insight. I could have used you 10 months ago when I did this. You seem like a pretty smart person, and helpfully pointed out that every screw is tighten the exact same in the factory and there aren’t thousands of other people online who have had over torqued screws that result in being striped even when using the properly sized screwdriver and doing something as complicated as turning it in the right direction. Crazy idea, but the existence of a screw being loose on a factory assembled product implies the existence of a screw being too tight on a factory assembled product and can result in striping when removing.
I LOVE that SONY did this.. I just installed my WD "BLACK" SN850P and this video made it so easy.. Taking the back piece of the ps5 off took the longest.. i also do want to echo that the screws are very "soft" so i recommend following the advice i saw others state as well in that you need to be careful you don't over-do it in unscrewing the screws so you don't strip them (from the m.2 cover and the screw / spacer).. and also make sure to not drop the screws/spacer into the console fan.. Took about 15 minutes but half that time was me re-watching each step before doing it to make sure i got it done right. If i had to do another i'd get it done in 5 minutes..
You think because that you probably have one people that don’t should stop talking about the big issue ….who the fuck would be dumb enough to spend 1k on a console
Easiest upgrade ever, thank you Sony for making the cover removal/replacement and SSD slot access so easy. If you're looking to get a PS5, i highly recommend just grabbing that M.2 with your order. The extra space is necessary given the size of games now. Coming from PS4, the difference in the PS4 and PS5 download sizes is SIGNIFICANT.
This video should be an university example of initiation of workforce and youtube archetype of how-to videos. It includes even the slightest tips like taking extra care for screw not dropping into fan, it goes through all the thoughs that you should have in your mind when installing the ssd.
Why Sony didnt already have at least 2tb of ssd storage is crazy. Now I have to spend extra money to get one of these things so I can download more than 5 games.
Ok Sony, this is actually pretty sweet. Super easy, official instructions, and allowing to expand the storage in the first place. Major props on this one.
Beware: it's extremely easy to strip the screw that's meant to hold the ssd in place. Mine was way too tight to remove with a normal screwdriver. Now I have to get a replacement screw and some decent pliras to try to get the damaged screw out.
I had to end up getting players to get the screw out. You must have been pushing super hard though to thread it. I had to give one good half twist an I got the screw out to re use with plyers must have been a maufacting defect or somthing for some to be as hard as they are
Good job on this one Sony. I often give you a hard time about not being customer friendly, but this one is a step in the right direction for sure. See this is how you get happy customers. :)
I just want to take a moment to express how grateful I am to Sony for letting us buy off-the-shelf drives to increase the storage of our systems without voiding our warranty. I've been taking advantage of this ever since my PS3, and this is not an option presented by other console manufacturers.
I watched this too and the same thing happened to me. i used the #1 phillips like it said. the first one went fine. The second one didn't take and the screw stripped and now i'm fucked.
@@saadghumra7436 that's called "stripping" your screw. I tried to call customer service to ask about the actual part of the screw and spacer and they basically told me to fuck off?
Make sure your table is not metal. If it is make sure you have an anti static material layered on top of it. Also bring a Swiss army knife that hopefully has a Phillips head screw driver.
Getting the cover off was a bit annoying. I positioned the PS5 vertically laying flat so I pulled downward towards myself and that was easier. It slid off right away. Hope this helps if anyone reads it.
That totally works! Thank you. Yeah pulling towards yourself is much easier then sideways. Don't pull up against the resistance. Pull diagonally towards the opposite corner.
It's actually a cross point screwdriver. A true Phillips screwdriver has four blades and then four little blades between the main blades. Just like in gunsmithing when removing a screw one hand has to be on the butt of the screwdriver using a fair amount of down force while the other hand does the turning.

Good video. This is needed to walk people through who are unfamiliar with this process.
That’s literally the entire point of the video

Quick and easy! My wife and i got some games, and we finally upgraded our storage. Thank you for the tutorial Sony! 🙏
something NOT mentioned here was how easily the storage screw strips. very likely you will need to use pliers to grip the screw and the spacer in order to remove it as even the phillips #1 screwdriver stripped my screw immediately with barely any pressure.
You save a lot of time for me with this comment. Thank so much
I read that a #0 screwdriver actually works better. Gonna try it next week when I get my WD drive.
Confirmed: my #0 screwdriver worked perfectly. No stripping.
I might get one down the road, but at the moment, I find adding games to my console storage when I want to play them and the rest of them on a external HDD, helps me focus on playing and actually beating one or two games instead of playing one game and half way through jumping to another game. That's been a huge issue for me playing on PC
Yep! I’m not playing as many games as I’m buying. Shitty habit.
First world problems.
@@yazanadnan1977 I've bought about 10 plus games for both PS4 and 5 that I havent touched yet and I'm buying more that are on sale. When people say it's not worth getting a PS5 because there's not that many games I always wonder how many games do you plan on playing at a time. If you're working, going to school etc then one or a few games should be enough until more come out.
@@eobardthawne324 I think people said that when it just released to also not feel jealous about getting one (I was one of those people) but man the ps5 (and xbox sx) are so much better since they have the ssd. Got the 980 pro too and like you a 3rd Party heatsink. Easy to install like you say and runs just as fast as the PS5 internal drive.
Do I need to have a specific software version to do the expansion? I saw something about being enrolled in a beta program?

Love the part where I used the screwdriver you recommended, yet that screw in the SSD expansion slot not only did not come out, but got stripped as well. Had to buy a replacement off Amazon.
How did you solve the issue of the stripped screw? It just occured to me too
Exactly!! I thought I was the only one who had a smaller screw in the ssd slot! They REALLY should have mentioned that you actually need 2 different size screwdrivers!
@@tomblade Which size screwdriver did you use because I'm using a Philips 1 screwdriver and the second screw won't come out. It's getting frustrating

It's amazing Sony making this and having support guides for something like this. A+ support
That sound in his videos of when he starts the play station trailer and the sound to the last of the play station should already be released officially for the ignition of the ps5 console would be fantastic
Amazing. Thank you, PlayStation for making a good, simple video.
FYI to anyone looking to do this. It is a horribly cheap standoff screw that strips immediately when trying to remove, you can find forums with what to buy to replace the one either stuck in your PlayStation or stuck out of it.
Maybe learn to use the right screwdriver and learn which way to unscrew and rescrew before using something as complicated as a screwdriver.
Great tutorial I followed it and now I got an extra 2tb of storage in my ps5
Great video, installed my SSD with no issues. I'm using a 500gb SN850 with a Maxesla M.2 SSD Heatsink from Amazon.
This was the best tutorial out there. I can’t believe it’s not the first one that pops up when I searched for it.
This was very helpful!!! I got my ps5 in July and got a ssd card for Christmas and this was very helpful thanks Sony!😎
Got an ssd for Christmas too. So excited to install mine as well. The luxury of having more storage is gonna feel so satisfying 😌

Thank you Sony for making your console so user friendly and for making this upgrade so simple and easy! ❤
I am already excited that my ps5 is on its way home. This music is just raising my heartbeat with excitement even more 😁
This was extremely helpful! I was able to install it on my own very quickly. Thank you for this easy and user-friendly guide!! 😊
Wow. It took me 10 minutes, of which five were spent cleaning old dust buildup. This was a very helpful guide.
2TB WD SN850 with heatsink arriving later today. Thanks for the video! I have one in my PC as well. Awesome drive!
Ok Sony, this is actually pretty sweet. Super easy, official instructions, and allowing to expand the storage in the first place. Major props on this one.
I prob do some dust cleaning at the same time
Thanks for the guide! I was able to quickly add storage and get everything running in about fifteen minutes. Love the easy instructions and access!
Personally the best video to watch for this upgrade process
Sony made it simple and fast with that easy to access expandable NVMe slot. Love it.
"Say M.2 SSD again"
"SHUDDUP SUMMER"
This might just be the clearest instructional video I've ever seen. Great job!
Buy a set of replacement hold down screws because you will most certainly strip the one that is included with the PS5.
I stripped the one holding the spacer, I'm still trying to get it out
Just installed a Samsung 4TB drive in my PS5 using this video, took me 5 minutes.

It should have had 2TB from the start but this is the 2nd best option. Thx for the tutorial. WD850 is in now!
I had to give one good half twist an I got the screw out to re use with plyers must have been a maufacting defect or somthing for some to be as hard as they are
What size even is the screw? Mines becoming stripped even with the “supposedly” right size bit
Wow I was scared of the thought of taking my ps5 apart to put an ssd in but this was actually super simple
Perfect. 👍 it was kinda hard buying a ssd that cost almost as much as the console but what the hell. Best Buy has no interest for 18 mos
The Wd black 2tb ssd was $449 when I ordered it from Best Buy 2 months ago but is currently $319. Best Buy refunded the difference. 👍
i was worried this was going to be difficult, but thanks for the amazingly easy upgrade
Great walk-through but I'm pretty sure that's not a #1 phillips on the spacer screw, as even with a brand new driver it wouldn't fit in the screw.
I used the Cheapest M.2 Gen 4 SSD - Kingston NV.2 2Tb. It does not fully meet the required speed... but it works great and I had no issues so far.
Fyi, if you strip the weak SSD screw… a hex M3 screw works way better.

Yes, mine’s just rounded out trying to remove it. 😩
I watched this too and the same thing happened to me. i used the #1 phillips like it said. the first one went fine. The second one didn't take and the screw stripped and now i'm fucked.
Does any one know the side for the second screw trying to get another one cos mine has lost the shape ontop
No wonder I couldn't open the first screw, so hard to open
Tried this and the screw for the spacer immediately stripped. Wonderful.
cant even get it out…
Yup,
My screw is completely...well, screwed. Used the appropriate size, and watched the screw just get stripped immediately. Great job Sony!
