I am kinda on a budget, woke up the other day quickly looking at reviews and made this choice in an hour. I got the the Makita mower after watching your video. The Ryobi mower battery does not last long. I got the Makita model MXL08 21-in blade yesterday with 4 batteries & charger package $699. from HD . Very impressed with it. My lawn is about your size and the back is larger, got the job done on all batteries. You have to stop every 3-5 min to unclog grass buildup into the bag if lawn is kinda damp, depending. Height adjustment on low works great, if your lawn is bumpy you may also pickup some earth, FYI. I have no complaints but wish the handle will fold when storing the mower. My reason for Makita because the Duo-Bay battery port. Great video review sir. P.S, I just found out I got the Pro model.
Thanks so much for taking time to make a comment with this detail! I’m thrilled to hear that my review helped. I totally agree about the lack of fold down handle. That’s my single complaint. In fact, I just put my handle back on today after it being in storage for winter. We live in Colorado Springs so winter is a bit longer. Thanks again for the comment and info. I wish you the best on your projects and lawn work!!
Great review. I really like that you narrated your unboxing instead of trying to live-talk through it. MUCH better way of doing unboxings. I'm new to Makita and new to the cordless world of lawn equipment, but I pulled the trigger and just spent a fortune on the Makita Chainsaw, Blower, Weed Trimmer and Mower. (Taking advantage of the 2 extra battery promo going on this month - so I'll end up with a total of sixteen 5.0 aH batteries!) Two things I wonder about re the mower. 1) Someone told me that you can wax/ceramic coat the brand new undercarriage and it will significantly help keep grass from sticking. Going to consider doing. 2) I'm going to look and see if anyone has gerry-rigged an aftermarket contraption for easy handle bar folding. Probably not - but you never know. I'd even pay Makita if they would sell an optional handle bar assembly.
Thanks for the comment! Woah!! You went all out. I love it. I don’t think you’ll regret it at all. Thanks for the idea of spraying the undercoat. I might try that. Enjoy your new tools!!
I picked up the MAKITA-XHU07T hedge trimmer. It's amazing, literally like having a scapel or samurai sword to trim. Hands down the best hedge trimmer I've ever used and I've used them all. How do you like the lawnmower thus far? I have a newer Honda HRX 217HYA 200cc with hydrostatic transmission that I love. I have a decent hill in my back yard I mow about 8k sq feet total for entire lot. My lawn is extremely thick and best in the neighborhood. Think 4 batteries would be adequate?
Wow I got mine on sale at home depot for $199 dollars and I new it was a great deal when I was going to purchase an extra battery for my makita drill and the battery alone was $149.99 and this mower came with 4 batteries and a charger and the mower itself I’m so happy for my purchase
I had the same problem with my wheel, but I started to using it like that and after two uses it broke off, I had to replace it. This is because they are careless people at the factory packing or rather throwing stuff into the boxes. I don't think it happens during shipping because that would be damage to the corner of the box.
Australia: Mine wasn't packaged like that. Batteries were not in the catcher. It was well packed. (Model: DLM536T4X) $1,350.00 - Virtually the same/similar. Only thing i found is my mulch side shoot kept falling off... don't know if it was my error installing or uneven terrain but will troubleshoot as was my first time using it as i unboxed it today. on first use i was very happy with it. I gave up before it did, i suffer from plantar fasciitis so can't do too much at once and the fact i had to give up before it did pleases me.. The batteries lasted longer than i did as i have 10x + the amount of lawn to mow as you have and i was completely happy at just how much it did before my feet gave in due to the pain. precisely why i got self propelled but i found that didn't help my condition it was more the terrain softness of the lawn and amount of steps that was stuffing up my condition not the mowers afterall but that's okay i can deal with that. I can have a spell recharge and tackle the rest which is good for me.
Hello to you in Australia! Very glad to hear that it has all worked out for you. We have enjoyed our mower now going on three seasons. I hope yours lasts a long time and continues to do well. Also I hope your plantar heals. That is no fun at all. Take care!
I purchased this same mower with 4 batteries included from Home Depot online. It was easy to assemble and the feature set with those great Makita cordless batteries is really great. I also love the two battery charger station. As for the packaging, I was actually shocked at how poorly packed it was. In my case the outer box looked like it had been returned from the gorilla cage at the zoo. Rips, tears, and holes galore. Inside the batteries were already in the mower and the nuts and bolts were literally loose and rolling around in the box. I guess Makita quality does not extend to their mower boxing. Also the red handle power lever seems to hit a detent when I pull it up to the main handle bar. This I believe is a defect and a potential safety issue. It's supposed to flip down to stop the blade from turning when you let go, right? After hearing that Makita will not respond to warranty issues, I guess I'll give home Depot a call. I would add that I mowed my entire front yard in 20 minutes with the self propel working the whole time on the first set of two batteries, leaving them with one light at the end. Very impressed. Overall I am quite happy with this Makita cordless mower.
Thanks for the comment, Roik! I agree - the packaging for such an expensive item should be better! You want your customer to be confident in yoru products BEFORE they open the box. My red bar does not detent at all and drops when we release it. Sorry to hear that you may have a defect. After working with Home Depot for many years, I am confident they will help you. Thanks again for your comment and good luck to you!
@@diywithandrew I ended up calling home Depot about the power bar defect. They replaced the entire mower in a matter of days and that was just the delivery time. The replacement unit doesn't have any problem with an apparent detent. So job well done kudos to Home Depot!
Hey pretty good video, BUT Never wear sandals around lawnmowers. Having worked in several ER's over 30 years we saw MANY foot injuries every spring and summer from homeowners wearing open shoes while doing yard work. Some pretty severe ones at that.DONT DO IT!!
Just found this video, so glad I did. It was extremely helpful, thank you. I do have a couple questions if you have time. Once the batteries are charged, can you leave them on the charger and how long do they hold a charge if not being used? Jill Tatum
Glad it helped! I’m not sure if Makita recommends taking the batteries off the charger or not once they are charged. I take them off and place them on my battery charging station shelves. I’ve also gone months between charge and use and haven’t seen any battery loss between.
I store mine standing vertically against the wall, front touching the ground, with a piece of foam under it. There's no gas or oil to spill out, so it's all good.
Thanks for sharing. I'll definitely get one as soon as they bring out the 40V XGT version since I'm about to purchase the 40V XGT mitre saw :) For sure the future is battery powered. My local council is starting to invest in battery powered commercial mowers and they have been very impressed by them.
Cool. My observation is, that this specific model makes more sense in a urban environment, where you don't want to wake up your neighbors or you just have a little bit of grass to take care of :) fun to know those battery packs function in their other tools too. Electric-everything is future! We just need solar/wind power installations so that we can use all of this power without having to deal with the overpriced grids.
Thanks for your comment. The other day we were mowing and I had a normal conversation with my wife while we walked along mowing. I was reminded at how quiet it is!
I'm a guy who grew up cutting firewood for primary heat. Would never give up my gas chainsaw, but I have a milwaukee battery chainsaw and it is a beast.
Doing all this with his Birkenstocks on (probably not a good idea to do in front of the folks at home as shoes should be worn while doing any of this) and turning the lawn mower onto the side with the batteries lodged inside the machine so that a limb can be accidently taken off while showing us this thing. Sorry for pointing these things out but these safety things were going through my head while watching LOL
I modified the handle hardware based on the ICE Honda that it replaced. For the upper pivot point I used short sections of EMT formed to fit over the handle tube’s & silver soldered to all thread. For the bottom pivot I cut the heads off bolts that had sufficient thread less end cut short so the handle can be spread to pivot over them & then slip into them before the pivot bolt is tightened securing the handle to the mower. McMaster Carr provided the tool-less nuts & bolts along with all thread & bolts.
Dinky toy. I would never finsh my lawn in a whole day that way. These things needs way bigger batterys to even be considered anything other than a toy.
This summer will be my 4th season using it to mow our yard. Without a lot of batteries it would be hard to do a large yard but it is a great mower for my yard size and definitely not a toy.

Are the battery packs interchangeable with their cordless power tools?
Yep!

Good video, do you notice it tends to lay down the grass instead of cutting it? I also hear the motor race at times for no reason I know.
Thanks. We don’t have any issues with either of those things and we use it weekly still.
I just had one delivered this morning - thanks for the setup info!

should have waited and just bought the XML09PT1, which has a lighter cast aluminum deck.

Txs for your feedback about Makita.
You bet!!
I just bought one. Lovin it.
Glad to hear it! We’ve had ours 3 years now and still working great.
Does anyone know how to make the mower run only on hi speed? I have thinner grass and wish it could cut at the high speed only
I am not sure. Hoping our community can help!
Turn off quiet mode.
Buy a heavier blade, that worked for me. If you want to conserve battery just keep it on quite mode.
Why is started button blinking red? Can't start it.
Maybe the safety isn’t in?
Not sold on battery mowers yet.. like to see review of Makita chainsaw though 🤔
I’ve got that on my list to try!

Not here. In other places I might but her the mulch setting works fine.

The side discharge shoot easily falls off.

I would never use power equipment or mow the lawn in flip flops very dangerous.
