I'm 59 and started development professionally at 35, this was a very relatable interview. My manager resigned last month so I assumed her role too. However, it's right in the middle of pen testing and NIST certification with the company. Time management has never been more paramount than today. For every year I've been in dev, I've read article after article about people worrying if being 30, 40, or more is to old.. Pfff... Having the right "WHY" and hunger to learn, I think removes the over the hill argument in most situations.

I'm 36 years old. I have a small business and I hate it. Last year when the pandemic was raging I decided to go back to school. Finished my 1st year with a 3.8GPA, doing FT school while also managing a FT, struggling business. This whole summer I've been learning Vue, Node/Express, and a bit of React, and I can't figure out why I didn't start sooner. This video speaks to me so much ;) Thank you.

I am 32 years of age soon and I am currently working as a truck driver in Australia. I have progressed to the maximum limit my job can offer me and now I'm honestly complete bored of it. I have plenty of downtime in which I'm using to learn to code throughout my day at work and after work. This video inspires me to keep going at it, also knowing that there will always be things to learn constantly keeps me more interested in pursuing this career. And I want to thank you for making this video and giving in depth knowledge in the recruiting stage and what they look for. Super proud of you as well for what you have achieved so far and how far you've come. Keep going strong!

I'm 49 and I am so grateful for this video. I went to a tech conference in late 2019 and I was told that I would never get a job because they only hire "fresh, new faces" out of college. Yeah, it was demoralizing. I taught myself how to customize Squarespace. And now I'm on learning AWS but I am self teaching myself how to code Javascript. Thank you.

What a reasonable dude is your boss. Very likeable.
The fact that, when looking for a potential employee, he's looking for someone that will be 'happy' in the role and with the team is really interesting. It's almost as if we all need to do a personality inventory before applying for jobs, because if we aren't a good fit it might end up being an unhappy situation. I think your boss really understands what things can get in the way of productivity (workplace interpersonal issues etc). Great Interview.

Man I hope I can find a boss like that eventually! A friend introduced me to coding recently, after he watched me sit around for hours just messing with different mods for skyrim. He told me I should look in to front end development since I like to tinker. I've been hooked from that day. I've been making 15 bucks an hour for the past 2 years as an e-commerce tech and I have 3 kids. For the first time ever I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Videos like this help keep me engaged and motivated because I'm used to getting shit on at every turn. Thanks for the boost and keep up the great content man!

38 year old woman changing career out of customer service to IT and it is, indeed, terrifying. Lots of doubts going on. But I *want* this. The fire is there. I have shelved all excess life time sink hobbies. I have been hungry for every course and will continue to study and learn whatever I have to to make this a reality.
Hearing Jonan say "She will absolutely get a job because she wants it" hit on such a deep level. Motivation kicked up a notch. Thank you year-ago Jonan.

whoa....This is a great video. Thank you Chris AND thank you Jonan !!!!
I kept trying and failing last year to teach myself coding. Life got in the way (and some procrastination on my part due to fear and lack of confidence .... if i'm being honest). Now I am going to start again. I especially feel confident about it since Jonan spoke about older people learning to code. I am 51 years old and i am giving myself 2 years from today to be working as a developer. I am not a tech newbie but more like an advanced beginner when it comes to computers and stuff.
I just find the back end and I.T. side of things interesting and so i found myself trying to read books/watch videos on so many topics/technologies.
****Can anyone tell me besides the widely acknowledged path of learning ( HTML/CSS/JS ).... if learning Microsoft Office technologies and C# and Python is helpful (or even necessary) for starting as a developer?
I would really appreciate any helpful suggestions.
    Thanks
    PS...
It's probably very unlikely, BUT DAMN... I would love to work for a guy like JONAN !!!!! LOL...

Hey Chris, this video is awesome! Thanks! I really enjoyed learning from Jonan, and he had a lot of good advice to give. Hmm… I can just briefly give some feedback if you want to improve I think the quality of your deliverance that others may not say. Speaking from a viewer’s perspective wanting to hear exactly what Jonan was wanting to say, sometimes I think you interrupted him a couple times too many where I couldn’t fully get the full picture he was trying to paint. Speaking also with the thought of the goal in mind to help your videos out too. So I would recommend that you don’t have to talk less but make fewer spontaneous interjections. I definitely know it’s a balance between how you want to present yourself and what the viewer really wants to receive, so then you can consider this for follow-up interviews, if you’d like! If you do see where I’m coming from, I know it also takes practice too! As spontaneous talking helps break the ice, so it is harder to remain silent perhaps. And so otherwise, it was awesome to hear from both of you!
P.S. I’m rewatching just to see if my comment was fair. Hmm, it seems like the majority of his thoughts Jonan finishes. I think it may be the style of the video with the editing and splicing and the more conversation style instead of more of an interview style that I thought it would be, that made me think to comment. Anyway, just something to think about. It may just be more of a preference thing. I’m always looking for high quality content to consume, so this is at least more of my opinion than something that is very definitive. Anyway, have a great day!

What an amazing insightful video, thanks man. When he touched on people being above 30 with demoralizing lives I feel like that uplifted so many people knowing that it pertained to them specifically, myself included, well 29 but 3 months away lol. Hmm I wonder how far I can get in these 3 months!
