Oh, best pencil ever is the Dixon Ticonderoga. Dirt cheap, great eraser, easy to grip, iconic shape and color. Did I mention dirt cheap, too?

My biggest pet peeve about pencils is that they don't handle sharpening very well. I sharpen sometimes until half the pencil is gone because it there's still wood left on one side of the pencil, and the graphite breaks often. No matter what pencil sharpener I use-hand-crank, electric, or the small plastic ones this still happens.

as far as i understand, thats because the axis of the graphite lead doesnt coincide with the axis of the wooden case. so when buying pencils, look for pencils with perfectly centered leads

Bring a small razor, like one out of a pencil sharpener. What i did in school (before everything went tech) was carried around a small plastic pencil sharpener, and just took the razor out every time i wanted to sharpen my pencil.

Another 10-20 years, and pencils will be obselte. Kids will see pictures of pencils, and be like "what's that??", sorta like kids are now if they see a rotary phone.

Personally, I use the Ticonderoga Black, because it has a great eraser, and it's black. However, I am also a fan of the Original Ticonderoga because it seems to have different lead, which can be easier to write with. . . at the trade off of a worse eraser.

Yeah as I have been learning to draw better those thing stand out to me more.
It could just be a weirdly shaped upside down ear.
Well it was right when the dolphin is showing its ass
I just noticed that both ears are missing but the ear is different on in each picture.
It was the first thing I noticed in both pictures and it drove me nuts.

I've borrowed these pencils from a friend and they are definitely worth it! The only critique I have of them is that when the eraser starts to be used up and you try to use the rest, you can't press as hard as you'd like because it will go back into the metal pocket and the medal will scratch your paper. Other than that they're pretty great
The best pencils are the ones you find in your class after another class was there
Rotring 800 with Pentel Ain Stein lead.
Sure, another pencil might be better for someone else, but a mechanical drafting pencil is leagues better than any traditional wooden pencil.
And in terms of price, by the time you would've used up $80 worth of cheap wooden pencils, it'll still work fine.
It really is a nice pencil. :P

Dash Lambda i use my rotring 600 for nearly all my drawings but i couldve gone for the 800 or the 800+ but i didnt cause i didnt want my most used pencil to be rattly (i spelled it wrong probably)
I have Blackwing 602. Smoothest pencil I have ever drawn with. While seeing this video, I immediately took out mine and started doodling. They're really pleasurable to draw things with.

For me the best pencils are the Faber Castell TK 9000 in 2B and the Faber Castell 9000 in 3B

I do like the 9000, I have some as backups for my Blackwings. I don't draw at all, but I do a lot of writing and nothing beats a Blackwing for writing.

+JustFrost lol I can't send pics but what other proof do you want? It has whiteout that someone tried to scratch off on the side, the eraser is white, but barely used. Someone forcefully tried to reinsert the eraser and so the little eraser holder has a dent in it, and so does the metal. It has a horse on it and someone drew a line of sharpie on the wood, and even thought I tried to get the sharpie off, it seeped through the the wood and it still has a small stain.
The drawings done with the girly pencils looked so much better. 😝

I suspect everyone who is saying the Dixon Ticonderoga is the best pencil ever has not used a Blackwing. The Ticonderoga is probably the best budget woodcased pencil, but probably not the best woodcased pencil available.
I have never used a Dixon Ticonderoga pencil. My local art stores don't sell them. I was lucky enough to find a Palamino Blackwing pencil and bought one along with a pack of 12 Palamino Blackwing eraser refills. I love my Palamino Blackwing pencil!
I have used one and it didn't seem like a big deal... I am a very casual drawler and I tend to just throw ink and paint at shit without sketching anything with a pencil first tho
I used to use Dixon Ticonderoga pencils, then got artist grade (Staetler lumograph).. it uh.. yeah, I tried using Dixon pencils again and threw them all away. I don't get how people find them so great.

Rhett and Link convinced me to buy these pencils and let me say, they write like butter. It's like when you try to write with a normal pencil on a graphite shading, it's that smooth.

they are really nice and smooth, but expensive. I got a 72 pack (without case) Raffine Color for $25 on eBay. it has lots of different shades and the "skin color" pencils are so great.
and if you dip the tip in water it become 50x smoother and pigmented it's so amazing

J-jaylet it's not meant to be a pencil for normal use. It's for artists and people who write for a living (well at least back in the day with the latter, since most use computers now obviously)
The reason they were loved was because it was easier to do several hours with it and still obtain brilliant results without your hand hurting as your hand hurting is a problem when you write for so long.

Mechanical pencils beat out Ticonderoga tho in every way
Ticonderoga doesn't run out of led, mechanical pencils run out of led and are made cheap. They break easily. You have to buy new led if you want to keep the pencil.
+Shelley Kup and you have to buy new pencils if you want to use a Ticonderoga... If you are responsible with a mechanical pencil the original lead it comes with can last a few weeks, and buying more is a lot easier than having to constantly sharpen more pencils

I like to use a range of 6 hardness types from Fabercastell (6B, 4B, 2B, 2HB, 2H, 4H).
