Finally its time for a teardown of the junkyard 4a-ge engine I bought a few days ago.
In this video I also cover some of the 4age engine family basics, and how the engines are different and categorized. I talk about bigports, smallports, redtop, bluetop, 16v and 20v and all the other 4age realted stuff.
Unfortunately the junkyard 4age engine turns out to be a total piece of junk. Came from the junkyard. I should have known. Its rod bearings are ruined beyond belief.
In the videos to come I will be dropping the engine from my MR2 and actually work on fixing that one. The junkyard 4age still wasn't such a failure because I did get a working distributor, wiring harness, cylinder head, ECU and some other bits with it. Stay tuned for more fun stuff to come.

I love the fact that the 4AGE is basically a Toyota clone of the Cosworth BDA, made famous by the Formula Atlantic race series. And the Yamaha head is a work of magic, like a cherry on the cake!
Great intro for a first time owner like me, I'm pulling it apart tomorrow. cheers from Aus mate.
There are always step backs when you're working on cars on your own. Practice makes perfect! Maybe this step will take a much longer time, but in the end this car will be better then ever! Keep on working, mate! We'll be here to follow your journey!
You said it! Thank you for your support, it's the best motivation.
Go on mate! Do not be discouraged.
Machine your own crank to U/S and off you go!
Cheers
Huge appreciation for working in flip flops.
Ancient Aliens must've assembled that head. They get confused by anything that doesn't involve some sort of torsion field drive. Tough break but you've got a good attitude, can't wait 'til you get things sorted!
ZatoichisCaneSword! I'm working through this, can't wait to get it back on the road. Thank you for your support!
You forgot the supercharged 4age, and the early sc and late sc ;)
So unfortunate that your broke the first engine :( Your video's and guides were so good I hope you find out exactly what you did wrong
+Vortrex99999 The 4agze is a different engine, but you're right, I should have mentioned it. I was downed for a bit by the failure but now I see it as sn opportunity. Will definitely find out the reason behind the rod knock and update with a video. Thanks for watching.
Hey man... I am being following your videos.... Very nice and informative thanks a lot....
First! Psyched to watch this since I actually own one. XD
802 Garage I think you might be the first person saying first on this channel. That's like a double first. The holy grail of the firsters? Congrats :) Which 4age do you have? I'm guessing a bigport? Got EGR? AFM or MAP? 3 or 7 ribbed block?
Really? That's crazy. I've already gotten a lot of "first" comments for some reason. I just like to do it on channels I actually watch to be silly. I always leave some kind of real comment with it though. Maybe I just have more immature viewers. :P
Mine is the stock 1985 MR2 engine. I believe it is the 3 rib with an AFM. I did a bit of research on it a while ago, but totally forget the details. I'll probably look it up again now. Listening to your video, I believe mine is the big port blue top, if you will.
Yeah mine is an early version, big port, must be 3 rib, pretty sure it is AFM because it looks like a giant MAF, and makes a whopping 112 HP.
802 Garage If it's an 85 than it's most likely a 3rib and has the blue valve cover. Definitely a bigport. Those have the lighter internals, not the best for turboing, bur they rev easier. I'm looking forward to you starting to tear into the mr2.
I was hoping for info on the 5 valve engine.
Is it superior to the 4 valve engine?
Why Yes, or Why Not?
For T-VIS I just say all the letters. You'll get this all sorted, sad about the new engine. Once you get the car running and unsieze the junkyard engine... Formula Atlantic build? :D
+PGTMR2 Oh man I wish I had the funds for a Formula Atlantic build. That's definitely on the list of my dream engine. But I think I have a plan for something really fun, will probably be announcing it soon.
driving 4 answers Alright, I'll keep watching. My buddy has an 07 Escape and just got rod knock, definitely interested in what you come up with.
I always say "T-vis" as if the second part is a word.
802 Garage Then it sounds like a visual aid. My car has VRIS, I give it the same treatment.
Amazing explanation!!!
I'm getting my 4age 16v skimmed, ported and polished is it necessary for me to redo the shimming of the head or can I can throw on some new valve stamp seals and refit it?
I would check the shimming to see if all is in spec and reshim as necessary. I doubt all will be in spec.
@@d4a thanks will do.
I’m not sure if the old 4a-ge engines had composite head gaskets vs. mls gaskets, but if they do how do you get all of the composite material off the block so an mls gasket could seal on there?
Very late reply but from what I know, all 16v N/A 4a's had Composite gaskets. As for removing the material to replace with an MLS gasket, MLS gaskets can cause trouble on blocks that haven't been machined, so unless you want to machine the block as well, or unless if you're doing substantial tuning, its best to just go with a composite gasket as a replacement.
Here is Australia we have some many of them even i have 2 4age 16v and 1 20v engine already in my ae82 re build the car but still not finished a l so h ave aw11 lsd gearbox from mr2 bolted to that 20v
#3 always goes bad
Hi, i have been wanting to get a small port, i got friends & some mechanics(acquaintes) saying it’s a weak engine..crankshaft etc
Thoughts?
4age? Weak? People turbo the stock 4age internals to 250 hp with zero issues for an entire season of racing / drifting etc. I don't know who told you this, and I don't mean to be rude, but it's complete nonsense. Also in today's times there's absolutely no reason for you to listen to me, a friend or a random mechanic, it's all on the internet and you can research the 4age reputation and hundreds of different builds yourself. It's an old tried and tested engine that by now had everything imaginable done to it and the resources are more than plentiful.
I love 4age the power engine ever
Just got a 4age 20v silver and its supposadly losing compression id like to pull the head can i do it while its still in my car?
Did you actually test compression first? If it's really bad you'll need to pull out the entire engine anyway
@@d4a i havent i just bought the car and thats just what i was told, im pretty sure it has a bad fuel pump aswell cause i cant hear it run when i try to turn it over
Hey boss would you happen to have a spare plate with the timing marks that go behind the cams ? I’d like to buy it if you do
Sorry man, I just have the one on my engine. The other one I gave away ages ago to someone that needed it
@@d4a thanks for responding
is there anywhere i can find a list of which cars came factory with bigport vs smallport and which cars had 3 or 7 ribs?
Club4ag forums have a lot of useful info in their help section
Is blacktop 20v interference or non interference engine?
About the blue top vs redtop thing I think all it proves is someone Frankensteined that engine together from multiple engines at some point ... they probably pulled that cam cap from another engine too and then just fit the cam bearings to it. sucks when people do stuff like that ... they know what it all means but it screws over the next guy and casts doubt on the entire thing. Did you manage to salvage the salvage engine or was it beyond repair?
I picked individual parts from it but the block and crank are only good for being turned into a table and chair lol
The blue top engines were 7 rib blocks. Also with the 42mm rods. However you are correct as to say big port vs small port instead of red top vs blue top.
Also some engine didn't come with t -vis but were 86 kw or 100kw some did even say t vis on the intake mainfold either
Real bummer that junkyard engine was such crap. As long as it was close to free, it's still worth it in parts as you said. Gotta love previous idiot mechanics! I'm a big victim of that as well.
Out of curiosity, what oil were you running in your rebuilt engine?
802 Garage It was from a junkyard, I expected more but am not surprised. Used 15w40 mineral for the first start and 10km. Used 10w40 after that.
There are letters stamped on my cam caps but theyre not in alphabetical order. To be expected with anything worked on by a thai, along with things like rear brake pipes connected to F on master cylinders and fronts to R.
Working in flip-flops? We have something in common ahahah XD
Ovais Saand I was wondering who would notice first :) . It's just so comfy right? But it's not safe, I should drop the habit.
Yeah agreed, but sometimes its so hot in shop I rather wear flips flop
Good-luck with the project!
For it to rust like that..how long would it hav to be sitting..
Very long. In an open field, exposed to the elements. I'm guessing 5+ years minimum.
How much would you pay for an 86 coupe that doesn't run. I'm suspecting I'll have to rebuild the engine and other parts but I really want this car. My neighbor has it in his driveway but he's just letting it sit there
Depends on where you are, prices vary wildly. Offer something super low, just a grand or two :) maybe he wants to get rid of it and/or doesn't care or know what it is. If he's a hoarder of some sort he'll want a stupidly high amount of money and you will know right away. Just start a conversation. If he's nice tell him he can be a part of the project/ rebuild, that way he might not feel as he's parting with it. But even if you are willing to pay more, hachis will never depreciate again, the value will just keep rising.
driving 4 answers Yes, the neighborhood we live is a small town in Oregon and from what I can see (judging on the looks of the outside of his house) he's a bit of a hoarder but I also think he doesn't know what he has lol thank you for the reply
Interesting music
Give us a link for camshafts
if u need 4age parts i can help source from australia, heaps of 4ages here, have 3 myself
rotormaster Thank you so much for the offer. If I need anything I won't forget to ask.
so what's next step for ur car's engine and the broken bearing?!
sufian abughalia Next step is getting the engine out of my mr2, grinding down the crank, getting oversized bearings and putting it back in. I'll be also doing an interesting mod to the engine. Will anounce it soon.
Man didnt you already rebuild the engine currently in the car recently? What might have happened to it so soon. bummer
Sventle Rebuilt it last year. Yeah it is a bit of bummer, but I decided to see the failure as an opportunity to make something and work through it to get the car back on the road asap.
@7:55 Just like the mechanical "moron," who broke his MR2 engine. :D People always have made careless mistakes but apparently got lucky and weren't called names by some wise ass. ;)
If you are going to be working that deep into an engine, drop a few $$ on an engine stand. Save your back and a lot of time.
+Dave M I have an engine stand, it's just that I pushed it deep into a corner of the garage and piled stuff on it, thinking I wouldn't need it in a while. I'm getting it out to work on my good engine.
dude that sucks. get a set of micrometer and measure everything! see if you can at least get the crank ground down 0.25 on your old build if it wasn't done already..at least you didn't spin a bearing on your 4ag in the mr2.
lol I spoke to soon.
*maybe your old oil pump was toasted ?
I bought a new oil pump for my 5M rebuild.
CR2504life I bought a brand new one. I'll be doing a detailed diagnosis soon.
Alsosome 4age 16v are 86 kw not 100kw
So new superballanced crank then
DANIEL CAZOE I had this crank dynamically balanced, so I'll just be grinding it down and fitting oversize bearings.
横置の4AG、AW11かAE92どっちだろ?カムホルダーの位置を記録しないのかな?あとでえらいことになると思うけどね。
only a true mechanic has grease under his toe nails
Just do a rebuild?
Probably will one day :) Focusing on my main engine right now.

quiet talking then loud ass beepboopbeep music holy fuck
Hahah lol you're right I just rewatched it. Sorry about that.
its all good thanks for breaking the engine down and filming it

Mechanical motmonism.
Quattro 4 What's motmonism? Maybe you meant moronism?
driving 4 answers yeah sorry. Typo- nice vid by the way. Ive seen some bigger budget series lile the motor trend series on porting, and by far I gained more insight from your vid on the porting subject.
Quattro 4 Thanks, glad you found it useful.
do an ls swap XD
+fromatic2 Imagine a mid-engined 950kg car with an LS in it. What an awesome way to die :)
It wouldn't even make it to that stage. If by some miracle you fit it in there, the rear end would completely collapse under the weight of the engine.
16th !
