Hey Karen! I’ve talked to you on FB several times and LOVE this channel! Here’s my issue-my clay will be at the proper consistency, not too hard or soft and wedged very well. But when I start pulling sometimes I feel as if my dried out hands (I call them dry b/c I have dry skin, I do wet them before touching the clay!) are causing drag no matter how wet they are. I also do the drizzle of water on the inside and outside of the vessel. It’s using my outside hand that this happens to. I try using a sponge but sometimes it seems as if I can’t feel the pressure on the wall as well and I worry about uneven pulls. I have a throwing larger class coming up so I’ve been practicing a lot so I’m ready. But this issue can be frustrating…
This is a great series. I've got some experience, but it's been a while since I've learned all the important basics. I'm about to teach my daughter how to throw on the wheel and I was looking exactly four this.
Hello, this is the best series I have seen on RUclips about wheel throwing! I am a maths teacher in Turkey learning pottery at the moment. And I have been enjoying your videos very much. Would you make a video about how long one should practice each of these methods before moving on to another one and what sort of other practices we can do. Thanks!
New to pottery and taking classes. You explain so well and it's much appreciate and SO helpful. Question - how much clay should a new person start with to practice? 1LB?
I usually have my kids start with the size of an orange- or fist sized- like 1 1/4 lbs perhaps? That way it is less likely to generate too much recycle! If you have a flop, try to eliminate as much slip as possible and set it aside for an hour or so then it can be wedged again!
I am still struggling on pulling the walls. I am too gentle. I have watched this video many times. I still can't seem to pull up without throwing off the centre or too much pressur to cause it to be too thin
I can't figure something out... I earlier videos it says if you're right handed you should go clockwise but... Is this going counter clockwise??? I just practiced tonight and I'm right handed and I had a lot more luck going counterclockwise also... I'm so confused 😅
In earlier videos I should have always said counter clockwise for right handed!! I’d only recommend clockwise for left handed! In the centering video I go into a bit of the difference between the left and right hand rotation. :)
How thick should the completed cylinder wall be? I would imagine a mug has a generally preferred thickness for drinking. Not as important if a vase. Thank you
It is called a bat mate. It helps to prevent be bat from jiggling. I talk more about it in the preparatory video for the wheel here at 10 minutes.ruclips.net/video/AAd74qpKnPE/видео.html

I am a very concrete linear learner, and your videos NAIL my learning style! Thank you! By any chance are there printable handouts?

Karen what is your pottery wheel make and model please?

Hi Tracy! Sorry for the delay! I like my walls to be a little thinner than 1/4". I'd approximate 3/16". :)
@@KaransPotsAndGlass Thank you kindly. Each throw is a tiny bit better :)
What cloth is being used under the bat and why?

The inside is soaking wet
Undercut the bottom. Should be keeping wheelhead dry and clean at base of pot first pull up should have gotten you higher.
