Oh my gosh...I started my pottery journey about a year and a half ago at 69 years old...I am loving it. Hopefully I will still be at it like you...after 15 years at 84. 🎉🎉🎉
Hi. The other reason for knuckle pulling is to avoid repetitive stress injuries. Fingertips are not really meant for exerting pressure and you will run into problems if you throw a lot and work with your fingertips.
Not going to lie, after my 3rd pottery lesson I had an event and had very long fake nails. I learned to throw with them using my knuckles on both sides of the clay instead of my fingers. To the day I still feel more comfortable that way even without those nails (I tend to overdo it if I use my fingertips and I make the piece fall onto itself)

Pulling with the palm or palm edge is a traditional english production throwing style great for big ware . See wichford pottery vids. Also using the heel of the left hand ( counter clockwise wheel) is a power lift for big stuff. I use it on almost all size lumps but really comes into its own on bigger stuff up to 50/60 lbs

Peripheral neuropathy here! I have little to no feeling in my fingers. I had some success with the nuckle pull today, but that palm pull might be even better for me. My nails are not the issue! :D
This is what I was coming to say! These alternative methods should be very helpful to me too. I love throwing, but I have very little sensation and strength in my fingers due to peripheral neuropathy (CMT). I can't wait to try some of these out! Thanks for the video!
I tried knuckle pulling with a combination of finger pulling today. My knuckle is definitely stronger. When I use my index and middle finger I feel I almost dry out the clay and take chunks out. I know what you would say. Practice, practice, practice!! 😉 I like the two finger pulling due to what you said...you have more nerves on your tips as opposed to your knuckle. Thanks so much for pointing that out!! You are one of the best instructors I've seen online and your very entertaining to watch with your humour. P.s. I stopped caring about my pretty nails!! Haha!

I recently started pulling with a wooden rib (wheel going anti-clockwise, rib in my right hand outside, left hand inside with a sponge). The wall thickness is much more consistent, and I can make a nice tall, straight cylinder quite easily. The top doesn't flair out, and if you hold that rib firmly enough, when you start pulling the clay, the only way is up (as Yazz sang, although I think it was a cover).
Actually I might make a video about it (pulling, not Yazz). I don't think I have seen a good video about pulling a straight cylinder with a rib.
I had a wheel throwing class in college. I feel like the instructor taught us to pull with the palm pulling method. I ended up dropping the class because I was also on crutches at the time and had an air cast and the wheels were up a spiral stair case. Maybe someday I will try wheel throwing again but for now I will stick to the coil and slab methods.
Thanks man this is really useful for me. With my hyper-mobility, I just flat out can't pull walls with my fingertips.
it just can't. Its like trying to throw with goddamn gummy worms. So I've been on the hunt for other methods as a work-around
its difficult to learn, but you'll get it with practice!
As a beginner I'm having alot of issues with finger pulling. My fingertips just aren't stable enough to make a consistent pull regardless of how slow I go. I'm definitely going to try knuckle pulling in my next class
I needed this, thanks. I basically only pull with fingertips, have not tried the other ones. I'm a noob, though, so that's why lol

Potted 45 years for a living. First pull up on large pieces of clay was always a Right handed pull. Gets all the particle orientation going in the right direction. Up and In
You say "just cut your nails" but it isn´t always about the look. For playing bass , guitar and ukulele I need my nails a bit longer on my right hand and short on the left hand. Throwing isn´t a problem with that configuration. But no, I don´t use the palm pulling tecnique. My nails aren´t that long
Why when you pull the clay seems so soft and easily pulled and the clay I purchase is much stiffer and more difficult to center and pull? What is you technique for ensuring your clay is very plastic? Love you videos and your pottery.! Very enlightening always search for new videos you have put out. Thank you.
I am a beginner and struggling. I can center and open, and can even make small stuff but pulling is where I get stuck! I palm pull, not because I love my nails, but because it is the only way I can pull ( I have arthritis in my hands and my fingers just don’t seem to work right. I also get pretty shaky after a few minutes on the wheel). However, I can not achieve any height with palm pulling. Got any suggestions?

I’ve found I have contrary opinions on types of clay, I don’t think of groggy clay as the “standard” or “beginner” clay for one reason: to beginner hands, it can hurt. I’d say its comparable to washing your hands with sand.
However, I don’t think porcelain should be the first clay used by beginners either (it collapses easier, also more expensive) although its my personal favorite. I think no grog b mix clay is suitable, so that it doesnt turn someone away with raw hands, but doesnr discourage with a collapsed piece 5 minutes in.
I think there's a difference in context here, when I say grog clay the clay that I'm talking about is relatively smooth. Be mixed with a grog still feels like b- mix.
but I feel like a lot of people think of straight 80% grog in a clay body when I say grog clay.
Some people touch heavily grog clay and automatically assume that is a representation of all grog clay. I would definitely not give, basically sculpture clay, to a beginner on the wheel. But they definitely would not get porcelain, they don't know how to handle it yet.
There is a middle ground clay which I usually give beginners

I was taught knuckle on the outside. Now I use different parts of my hand. Totally agree with you about long fingernails. They have to go.
So is that right to say every time when you pull the clay, it gets narrower because you are extreme pressure inward?
What kind of clay do you use? It looks much more plastic than what I've been working with.

I've had good success pulling with my thumbs. Learned that method from Hsin. I like it because you're able to stabilize really well!
Hsin is the man. the thumb is my go to as well unless its something pretty small or thin.

I have to pull with the palm of my hands due to the fact that I have a essential tremor my fingers shake to bad to pull with them and FYI I Ave never in my life had long fingernails!

Nope, I have nails, love them, but frankly, when I finally get back in the studio on Tuesday next week, after years of not being able to be there, you better believe the nails are gone! Lol.
I met a professional potter who used his fingers on the inside of the pot and pulled up the clay from inside, bracing the clay with the other hand on the outside. He makes beautiful pots, but I don't know anyone else who does that
This is also how I throw when making voluminous pieces.

I have adopted that type of pulling and it is really great. I have a lot more control and even though it's a bit awkward at first, I find that i pull a lot more evenly than with my fingers. It also allows me to get more clay distributed from the foot. Give it a try!

You are supposed to use palm pulling when you are throwing a big piece of clay instead of a small piece.

My class at the local gallery is only once a week. It seems like if I don't cut my nails before each class I'm taking gouges out of the clay with them. Super frustrating to do when you finally get a nice pot.
My finger tip and my brain are in different time zones some days.
Would really prefer if you can stop commenting on nails in such a derogatory way.... esp since that’s usually a more feminine trait, so it’s kind of come across as if you’re attacking women potters who happen to want to have nice nails, which isn’t a bad thing if that’s what they want. You can comment on how longer nails are detrimental to pottery without attacking nails.... because they’re f*cling nails and it really doesn’t matter LOL
Ain't got nothing to do with gender or sex. Wear the nails if you want. But the reality is unless you wanna do alot of work around it's gonna slow you down.
No matter if your male, female, non-binary, or other it's most likely going to be a detriment for a beginner. Write it in stone.
Again that’s fine, but you don’t have to be rude about it LOL, essentially since it comes off as you attacking women when you say it 3 to 4 times in one video. Telling you this as a woman, who knows you’re not trying to come off that way, and who has seen the other comments on this video. Again, you can say nails are detrimental to pottery throwing without bringing down people who didn’t know that. That’s part of being an educator.

I'm a woman. Acrylic nails are gross. Yes, I've tried them. Twice. They deserve all the ridicule, and more!

I can’t stand seeing people who have dirt in their nails. I use normal studio clay, and I also use red stone clay with grog. I always wash my hands, and clean my nails thoroughly
