  • This is part of the new wheel series I am working on this summer! I am remaking my wheel videos on my new SKUTT wheel!!! Here is a link to my wheel- available from most good pottery suppliers. skutt.com/products-page/potte...
    The video is focused on the shaping of the thinned cylinder into an interesting form. The techniques can be used for shaping any form, but this video focuses on cylinders- and possible cup forms.
    I discuss pushing out and in, and using leading fingers to help direct the clay in the way you want it to go.
    My new series will offer new videos with tips and tricks to successfully wheel throw pieces- from beginner to intermediate to advanced. I will be offering a good deal of EXPLANATION within the videos to help people understand the mechanics of why things work the way they do! I often tell my students they learn more from their mistakes than from their successes in throwing. In these videos in my series, I will try to distill my best tips I have learned from my successes and failures, and my students' struggles as well. Two things have led me to becoming the potter I am today. Countless hours of making pots, (and explaining how to make pots), and understanding and learning from my failures when pots didn’t work out! These are the things I want to share with you- to help YOU become a better potter!

    I’ve managed to reach this step but this is where I’ve hit a wall. Shaping is pretty difficult for me. I’ve realized to start shaping way before the walls get too thin. Thx for the vid it’s really helpful

    Hi! Do you have any videos on using ribs (including profile ribs) to shape your pots? Whenever I create a negative space with a rib and gently push the clay to fill that space, I struggle with throwing the pot off center and it goes kaffluey. Would love to see your technique using ribs!

      Hi Amy! Most of my rib use in videos would just be incidental… that’s a great idea to shoot a video concentrating on using ribs! I’ll put that on my list to cover when I’m off on spring break soon!! I’ll try to remember to respond to let you know- but in case I forget- hit subscribe so you’ll get notified!

    how wide is the top when it shrinks and is fired?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  3 года назад +3

      Hi DyAnn- my rule of thumb is after firing, I like the width of a mug to be the distance from my mouth to the bridge of my nose ('ish")... as I look in my cabinet at my mugs, they normally range between 3- 3.5" on the exterior. (I do have a few more narrow or wider, but the narrow ones are harder to wash- and the wide ones easier to spill when drinking). The ones in the video haven't dried or fired yet, so I can't be specific on those! I do factor in shrinking, as it always seems so dramatic in the size loss! ;). Of course, different clays will shrink at different rates... so you will want to find what works best for you! :)
