  • This is part of the new wheel series I am working on this summer! I am remaking my wheel videos on my new SKUTT wheel!!! Here is a link to my wheel- available from most good pottery suppliers. skutt.com/products-page/potte...
The video is focused on 5 different ways to TRIM a cup or a cylinder. These are the most common ways that beginners normally would choose from when learning to trim.
    Using a Giffin Grip-
    Using a thrown domed CHUM
    Using lugs on the rim
    Using a sticky bat
    Using a film of water
And the bonus items I describe:
    Using a foam bat
    Using a chuck
For links to the giffin grip and the sticky bat, just consult my searchable googledoc of links here: docs.google.com/document/d/1X...
My new series will offer new videos with tips and tricks to successfully wheel throw pieces- from beginner to intermediate to advanced. I will be offering a good deal of EXPLANATION within the videos to help people understand the mechanics of why things work the way they do! I often tell my students they learn more from their mistakes than from their successes in throwing. In these videos in my series, I will try to distill my best tips I have learned from my successes and failures, and my students' struggles as well. Two things have led me to becoming the potter I am today. Countless hours of making pots, (and explaining how to make pots), and understanding and learning from my failures when pots didn’t work out! These are the things I want to share with you- to help YOU become a better potter!

Thanks Karan, the part about trimming straight down, was exactly what I was missing from all of the other numerous trimming videos I have watched. As a self taught potter starting out during covid this video was vital to my continued learning process. Because you have taught beginners for decades, your explanations are far superior to most other potters' content. I will benefit greatly from your caring attention to detail! Much gratitude, Lou

I bet that in the video I’m using an inexpensive Kemper- I like Dolan- only have a few- I’d love to try Diamond core and bison- but have to save up for those!!!
