the thing with KISS not competing with bands like Van Halen in 1980 and the cover of Unmasked etc, is that at that time KISS could not care less about being an ass kicking rock band. It was all about the $$$ from the 9 year olds and their parents. Compare KISS in 1974 & 1975 to 1979 & 1980 and it is not even close to being the same band. KISS became H & R Puff n Stuff with guitars. I am surprised their songs were not about the alphabet and learning to count etc.....
Kerry Hudson I get what you're saying. I was 8 when Unmasked came out in 1980 and even I, at such a young age, knew that the songs just weren't as hard as their earlier ones. All the teens by then had so many other things to choose from. For Pete's sake, 1980 was the year of Blizzard of Oz, Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell, the first Iron Maiden, British Steel, AC/DC's Back In Black, Saxon's Wheels of Steel, etc. I always fully expected KISS to show up on the Muppets, Sesame Street, or Picture Pages with Bill Cosby.
I'm an occasional watcher and I just came across this old episoide now. I met Jay when I was in Vegas for the Kiss Rocks Vegas shows. I'm not from the USA but I happened to be in San Francisco on a work trip the week before, so I went to Vegas afterwards to see the show, decided to splurge for the backstage experience (photo, and acoustic performance). I got to the venue quite early and after looking around the hotel, I sat down at one of the bars and noticed a guy next to me with a Kiss shirt. It was Jay. Had a good chat and shared a few Kiss stories. When it was time to go to the venue, he also made sure I knew where it was, and how all the logistics for it would run. Really nice and friendly guy.
Guys, Jay is another fantastic guest .. Man loved this episode. Mark thanks for the work & showing the items.. much appreciated. Tommy loved seeing you laugh & smile throughout the episode. Mike great questions.. one of my favourite episodes.
i loved Ace,s show in Melbourne....but one reason i would never go for an Ace meet and greet....as much as i love him...he,s not reliable....and i think its best to stick to the old saying ...sometimes its not always a good idea to meet your hero,s.......its a shame for the people that did go...because they are not cheap these meet and greets also i agree with Mike...i think this will be Ace,s last tour of Australia...i cant see him coming back....so im glad i caught the show
I have seen some footage of the Paul Stanley 1978 in store appearance on RUclips. One girl in particular was hysterical. She was crying and said "I can't believe I'm seeing him!" Really cool footage!
I miss collecting back in the days before the internet. you are 100% right. Finding those bootlegs & 12" singles w/ rare b-sides was like finding gold. FUCK MAN!!!
Dear OG KIss fans (in your teens in the 70s) we, the children that started following Kiss in '78 and '79, apologize that we made going to Kiss concerts and buying their albums so unenjoyable. We're sorry for showing up on the Dynasty tour with our parents. We're sorry for buying the puzzles, the dolls, the 16 Magazines. How dare we think Kiss was awesome. You know what else we did? We stuck by them in their lean years when you abandoned them. (Not directed at the Three Sides crew who are in fact awesome in their own right.)
Okay, I'm 3 years late replying to this comment, but it needs to be said: My parents made my older brother take me to see KISS, 3/1/77. I was 9 at the time. My sister had to take me to the next one in 79. I had the swag. The puzzles, the magazines, the comic book and yes even the dolls. Kiss fans floated the boat. Kids, teens or parents, we put them on that pedestal and we've all kept them there. No apologies, no regrets. Rock on!
Here is my two cents regarding the Meet and Greet enthusiasm. I had my picture taken with Gene at the Convention in 95 and he wasn't even looking at the camera and he didn't even acknowledge me. He just stood there. Eric Singer was being a jerk to people who wanted him to sign their arms for a tattoo. Bruce was absolutely engaging and cool and Paul was great and engaged. Peter in 95 signed autographs in his bus while people were passing their stuff to a guy hanging out of the window.
The first album I bought was KISS gold as it was on a seperate stand in HMV, and it just looked great, if it wasn't there I wouldn;t have got it. Speaking of album covers, when I was going to buy my second KISS album, I picked up Hot In The Shade and going 'huh? whats this?' and I always thought it was misplaced in the KISS collection, because it was so different to any other album. Its funny, cause I was looking for a studio album that had the most songs (which was Sonic Boom) and if I had bought Hot In The Shade, I wonder how I'd feel listening to that album, and if I would have become so much a fan. I buy music from in store shops, I found some great bargains for KISS, Alice Cooper and Ozzy to name a few. I love the excitement going to a second hand cd store and seeing 'KISS ALIVE 3' for £3, thats not even in any cd selling store in the UK, with the exception of the big cities.
Wow, didn't know that about the Revenge tour, because I seen them in Detroit at the Palace in Auburn Hills on that tour and the place was a packed mad house, they even used that concert for Alive 3 album and video.
This is a great show. I just want to add my $0.02. As you get older things change. You grow up. As much as we all love the kiss of the seventies it couldn't last forever. Whatever was changing in our lives, was changing in their lives as well. These guys are twice our age. It takes a lot of guts to do something different and not be stuck in the same rut. Some people do it better than others when it comes to musicians. There's not a Ramones album that I don't like but even the Ramones experimented staying true to the band they were. If you put Bonzo goes to Bitburg against now I want to sniff some glue.... you will see what I mean. When you cease to grow you cease to live. I'm not saying this is a bad thing but for me.. if you own the first tool album you own them all. Ac/dc is another example. I love the band ac/dc. They are consistent they give you great rock and roll. But I only own three albums. Let there be rock. Highway to hell. Back in black. I don't need the rest. But this is coming from a guy who is played in bands his entire life and done solo stuff and who listens to anything and everything from Mozart's 9th symphony to James Brown and I can easily turn around and listen to Buck Owens. Johnny Cash, kiss. Blondie. Fear. Social Distortion. Cheap trick. Agent Orange. Enya. The Pogues. Siouxsie and the Banshees. The Rolling Stones. The Flying Burrito Brothers. Parliament. The Partridge Family. Waylon Jennings. Don Williams. And for god sakes even the Bay City Rollers on occasion of course! How can you not like Saturday night? So kiss changing direction has never bothered me. Their change of direction help me grow... expecially Peter's solo album... that I actually like other things. And to this day I still a credit Peter's solo album to changing the way I think. It wasn't very kiss. But he was a part of kiss so I listened. And as much as of Ace Frehley fan I am... Peter Chris's solo album really is my favorite of the four. Paul was Paul. Gene Was the Beatles. Ace was ace and he rocked. And Peter put himself out there. I have so much respect for that. Anyway what I've said could open up a can of worms Of who is on what and who doing what... And mental capacity.... Personalities.,.. But in the end all four guys are special.... And they sure give us a whole lot to talk about. What's wrong with us?!!!!! You guys take care I look forward to the next episode. Sorry my rent was so long.
Tommy, you owe me a cleaning bill for my laptop. I had just taken a swig of my Vodka/ diet when you made your "Ace face". Funniest thing ever! You nailed it!
I went to see Ace in Dallas, TX last December. Chris Jericho (WWF/WWE, etc..) was in attendance. Jericho had interviewed Ace for one of his podcasts months before the show and Ace was great. The interview was awesome and Jericho said that Ace's camp called him after the interview and said Ace loved it and was thrilled with Jericho. Fast forward back to Dallas. Jericho said when he went to talk to Ace (at the show) that Ace blew him off and acted like he didn't know or care who he was! So, I think Ace has memory issues and personal issues since day one. He will not change. He hired a shitty manager. The guy looks like a flake and acts like one too. I saw him interact at the Dallas show. Ace is Ace man. I love his album Space Invader and he was good live but I stayed away from those crappy meet and greets!
It's the other way around. Kiss actually saved Vinnie Vincent. Take a gander at the Dan Hartman-Instant Replay video one time (once is enough). I think Kiss gave Vin his first real rock n roll credential. Anyway great show . Look forward to it every week.
Oh sh1t!!! 'Goldmine' magazine... I still have some of those from the mid-90's with things I still am hoping to call the dealer and still buy them!! lol Another great show guys!
This link contains several photos from Paul Stanley's in store at Cactus Records here in Houston, Texas. Very cool pics. Love the show guys, keep up the great work! rockinhouston.com/performers/paul-stanley/945/
H-TownAce ! That is an awesome website! I think that is totally cool that someone put the effort in to getting that thing up and running. A lot of history there and glad to see it preserved and made public. Thanks for the link!
Michael Brandvold was only refering to your comment that ace was done no more tour dates after 2015 but to be fair that was 3 years ago and how would you know for sure he was done in 2015 I think he's better now than when he started touring at the time of this podcast but I can tell you guys are great ace fans been binge watching your shows last few days keep up good work also you where right crazy nites is a good album didn't like it when it came out but now do so things do change thanks for replying back to me love the show nice to know that im not the only 50 year old man that likes to talk about kiss lol
I'm listening to this in February 2024. And Ace played up here in Petaluma, California about 1 year ago. It kind of sounded like you guys were being apologist for Ace, and a little too sensitive about the "wrong again" comment. The Tenderloin district is a reference to an area of San Francisco that has a strong gay community. That was kind of a dickish comment.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but, isn't Ace being managed by John Ostronomy and Rachael Gordon? (sorry if names are spelled wrong) If there are issues with the Ace m&g I think Rachael and John need to be cornered and find out the how and why everything was going wrong... I would be willing to bet that Ace told them "you handle it" Also, Mark's comment about the KISS camp being about respect of the fans, I will agree with, however, I have a Paul story that you might be surprised with..
Good to hear that the shows are getting great reviews. I agree with you guys, the meet & greets need to go, I can't believe that Ace is so dense that he doesn't see how shitty this is for his fans, very conceited. I do remember that the first time I saw a grandma at a concert was KISS on the Dynasty tour, I thought it was cool that a grandmother would take a kid to a concert but then I was also thinking that "this was not a good" omen. Another great show guys, you are on a roll!
Another great show, guys!!! Appreciate all the hard work ya put into it. We're never going to agree on everything, but it's always cool hearing everyone's opinion and insight on all things KISS, and listening to all the great guests.
Thumbs up from me!! AEROSMITH ALERT ⚠️ in the 59th minute!! Blue Kool-Aid Drinker. Peace out from the Southern Tip of Vancouver Island 🏝, B.C. Canada ⛱️ 🇨🇦.
First KISS show was Creatures with Night Ranger opening at the Centrum in Worcester MA. Best song on that album is War Machine in my opinion. However, any song is great from that album, especially after Unmasked and Elder.
We were outside around the corner before the show and waited for them to come out of a small Inn to jump into Limo's and drive right by us with Gene on our side, we flashed the horns and he returned them, was fantastic and many many moons ago!
This was an amazing episode, guys! This one and the one before are definitely a two for two. Hell, It's a 126/126.. But these past four have been absolutely incredible! But if I may, (I hope it's not "old news"), but I want to share something about the Ace talk in the beginning... I am a HUGE Ace fan. I have a tattoo of Ace on my calf, and he is the reason I play the way I do in my group. I have been on a few east-coast tours, nothing too big in the eyes of many but in mine, I treat them all like they're huge. Shit, I treat a local venue here in West Virginia like I'm playing The Garden because people come out to see MY BAND! However, I have had to let a former member of my band go because of the same attitude Ace had. Same with previous groups of mine.. Ace needs to thank his lucky stars that KISS put up with him the way they did for so many years. He needs to feel blessed that he is the "front-and-center" man of the group because I'm telling you, if he were just a guitar player in my local group, he would have been gone a long, long time ago. We have played more than a half-dozen shows back to back and yes, there were times where we were exhausted but we got up in the morning, checked out the city/town, checked out the venue, set our stuff up, talked to people, interacted with the crowd/bartenders/owners, and made sure we left a huge impression behind. And it wasn't just me, it was everyone. Before we hit an unfamiliar spot we make sure Everybody is on board to talk to everyone, answer questions, and blow up social media for where we're at "today." What I am gathering from Ace is that he's dis-respectful, lazy, unorganized, a bit of a cry-baby, and he doesn't need to be out on the road. It's honestly a damn shame because I love the man and just like you guys, I would love to see him get his shit together... In short, he would never be in my band no matter who he is.. Just stating that before the "he wouldn't want to be in your shitty band anyway" comments roll around. AWESOME SHOW! Love Jay as a guest! It only goes up from here! By The Way: Love the Housekeeping Intro/Outro
If I got invited to Genes home? After checking out the collection, I'd ask to use the bathroom, and leave him an "upper decker". My guess is it would drive him insane, and when eventually discovered...he'd probably blame it on Paul. LOL

any links to the photo of ace pointing at the empty wall? would LOVE to see that :)

BLASPHERIAN HORDES very cool! there's photos of that event online
I was there my mom took me. If I remember correctly the store was off 1960 around the champions forest area.
Another great show. That was hysterical when you kept getting Mark to leave!!
Good to see ol' Ron Jeremy again.

Great episode, Jay seems very personable. Awesome guest! Lovin' recent Suhs, Sullivan, Slaughter, Gooch! Thanks guys!
Another great show! Keep it up guys!
Based on the images/photos I could find, it looks like Paul's 78 Solo instore pants were in fact all silver with black striping down the leg
You fellas...you got this.

Does mark own a kiss coffin I gotta know
I'm also a long suffering Vikings fan.

I remember someone tumbling, couldn't remember if it was Paul or another concert, didn't he tumble from the left side?
We were outside around the corner before the show and waited for them to come out of a small Inn to jump into Limo's and drive right by us with Gene on our side, we flashed the horns and he returned them, was fantastic and many many moons ago!

If I got invited to Genes home? After checking out the collection, I'd ask to use the bathroom, and leave him an "upper decker". My guess is it would drive him insane, and when eventually discovered...he'd probably blame it on Paul. LOL
I don't know about you guys , but I am convinced that Jay is Peter Criss's identical twin minus the hair .. !
