@@lightcase377 bruh, we in Ukraine know what they mean but no-one's offended by it. Why would anyone be offended by the fact that our women are considered beautiful? (Which they are)
GO-a, the Ukrainian band, mixes folk music and electro. The singer is trained into traditional « white voice » (cristaline voice). The song is an ode to the pagan god Shum to make the long winter go away and let spring in. What’s so powerful is that they use traditional folk song themes (seasons) for a modern context (the long winter is a metaphor for the Covid pandemie).
Shum sounds like szum (шум), which in west and east slavic languages means... well, it's translated as noise, but most of time noise in english means unwanted, unpleasant, or loud sounds. While meaning at least in my knowledge of szum(шум) is more of light, natural, sometimes soothing sounds, often caused by wind, most often related to "forest noise" like singing birds and leaves rustling in the wind or "sea noise" the sound of the wind and the sound of the water hitting the sand on the shore. Hence probably the name of this god, as he is responsible for these sounds of the forest, especially since Slavic culture had tendency to give "soul" to objects, animals, plants and phenomena. Also it's probably some kind of local Ukrainian version of the Leshy, slavic deity of forest.
honestly, people don't know much about Eastern Europe which is disappointing, Slavic culture and music is just amazing there are even channels for that certain music in those countries. I feel like every slav country felt proud of Ukraine that day. They should have won because they sing in their own language and the music is culture true country representation. Its disappointing that some countries only sing in English even if its not their native language bc it might get them more votes. When she say that Ukrain's song SHUM sounds like a spell, about sound reminding him about being on a field, that is so spot on that it's almost creepy. I'm not a Ukrainian so someone else feel free to correct me, but the way I understood it based on interviews is that the song is a "modernized" version of an old spring festival to go from the cold, dead winter into the warmer, living spring. The sun rising in the end and all that. So it is pretty spot on that it is " a spell" being cast back in the odl days to summon the Spring so the people could finally start to farm and grow food again. That's why they are pouring grains towards the end. They are way better than me at understanding the performances! EDIT: Just to add, based on interviews and articles they chose this pagain ritual as a way to usher in spring after the cold year of Covid. So now when we seem to be able to get a grasp of it and push the pandemic back, that we should slowly be able to come back outside and live in the world, just like when the cold winter tyurns to spring.
