Thank you for sharing this Japanese classic horror movie (with English subtitles), it's much appreciated. I wouldn't have had the opportunity to watch this anywhere else.
This is excellent. The film has nothing to do with horror but with the effects of war on human beings. The peasants are put into an animal like state and forced to do evil. Hachi is amoral and justly punished for it. But the old woman is a "human being," as she says at the end. She is driven towards evil by desparation, grief, and lack of food, but knows the difference, since her "victims" are samurai who started the war and caused all the misery. I loved the atmosphere, personally.
So many scenes were beautifully framed and made me think how the controlled the lighting such long time ago, the acting of the old woman and hachi was great, the acting of the young widow could have been better, even tho she was meant to play a simple-minded girl. The samurai who had a mask scene really made me sad, obviously he put the mask on to hide his face. What a spectacular ending when directly or indirectly the samurai take their revenge. There were slightly surrealistic elements in it when they talk about kyoto and "a horse gave birth to a calf", "frost in summer" and "the day was dark, the sun turned black (probably a solar eclipse)" The most brutal as per me were the first scene where the poor men can't even catch a break before they are speared, then when two guys came over swimming to ask for help and they fking speared them, and then the dog scene. They were all primal and animalistic, great direction and cinematography, especially framing. I actually would have liked the ending more if the mask didn't come off at all. Also, opinions are personal, i hated that lustful dog-like hachi guy, like wtf dude catch a break, mauling at the woman like a king dog ew. So satisfying to see him die. Edit: loved the use of music too, gonna search on the instruments, and which era it's set in. lovely movie: 4.5/5
Thanks for posting. Onibaba is so strange and so weird to someone from as western culture like me. Yet it does have humanity and characters you find that you care about, even if you don't, or perhaps can't, fully understand them. We need to see more of this kind of film as an antidote to the films that Hollywood expects us to watch, that are all predictable, unengaging, generic corporate clones.
This is one of my favourite Japanese period drama films. So sinister and brooding, you almost feel the claustrophobic tension on screen. The superb acting and cinematography that captures such a beautiful yet bleak existence almost feels hypnotic at times. As for those who want to try and put hate on a film of this calibre, frankly you're only showing yourself up for a lack of taste and maturity. Japanese cinema is well known for its appreciation for minimalistic, subtle approach with the ideas being represented through visual metaphor and symbolism. If you haven't got the capacity to think a little deeper, then I suggest you get back to Hollywood mainstream conveyor belt Marvel fodder.
I just saw this on HBO, I actually enjoyed it. Good stuff. I think Hachi really missed out on not taking the mother in laws offer, she did not look bad at all.
Been meaning to check this out for a long time. Loved it, ordered another one of Shindo's films, and I'll probably preorder Criterion's upcoming Blu Ray. What a great experience. This a great film, despite what some of the TikTok brained fools in the comments may think. Very dark, atmospheric and sexual. A chilling depiction of what the ravages of war and desperation can do to people. The whole twist with the mask reminds of the old Goosebumps story The Haunted Mask. Wouldn't be surprised if RL Stine watched this film before he wrote that one.
This is a masterpiece of a film that I cannot get enough of. Bought the Blu ray not too long ago after I saw it on Max. It's sexy, thrilling, horrifying, violent, and full of a bunch of manipulation and fuckery. Every character does horrible things, but is understandable why they would do such horrible things. War makes people that way. It's an examination of jealousy and survival. The mother in law needs the daughter in law and is afraid of this new guy taking the daughter in law away from her. She needs her to do the things she cannot physically do. You really can't blame any of them for wanting different things. The mother is fearful of her old age and is constantly reminded about it throughout the movie making her go to more desperate measures to survive and keep the daughter in law on her side. Meanwhile, the daughter in law and Hachi want to experience their youth and love sexually with each other while they still can. It's breaking humans down to their most primitive and it never stops. It's a great message that jealousy and manipulation can lead to horrific consequences. Japanese war movie mixed with Japanese lore. Whomever doesn't love or even like this movie just purely has shit taste in movies or just doesn't get it. A masterpiece through and through.
@@Agave310 I am actually. I appreciate certain aspects of the film but I think it suffers from being classed as a horror when in reality it isn't. Eh, Shindo's *Kuroneko* kicks this movie's ass. That is arguably my favorite horror film. This isn't really horror at all, it's more of an examination of gender roles and war in a sort of erotic suspense story. This is fine, but Kuroneko is hands down the best ghost movie ever, and I recommend trying it out if you liked this. (It also features the same star, same director, etc.)
@@livewithpatienceandcomposu2510 I'd say the parts that involve the mother wearing the mask and the ending to be straight up horror, but it is a mostly slow moving creepy film with a very long build up where the horror itself may not even be supernatural. Amazing movie, there's a lot of theories about who it was that killed Hachi at the end. Do you personally think it was a random samurai or the old woman's son?
I think, the latter. The old woman is trying to scare her daughter-in-law away with the samurai mask in the fields which in my opinion is intended to represent the ghost of her deceased son. Don't you just love movies with endings open for interpretation? :D
I would go with the random killer, a drifter not unlike Hachi who escapes from the war (ironically, the tables have turned this time and he kills Hachi and not the other way around, like usual).
Thanks for uploading this great movie. Very atmospheric and at times unsettling. Great direction, filming and acting with a very dark story. The scene in which they chase and kill the stray dog shows these women to be very primal and animalistic in their behavior and attitudes. It is a jarring scene and it made me wonder if the dog was actually hurt and/or killed during the filming of this scene. It is not shown to die on screen, but the dog looks to be flung wildly by the older woman up and towards the ground. In those days animals were abused and killed on screen during filming. I think that would be even more true in Japan during that time period.

Creepy old movie. I was searching for infos about the mask, because i saw it already at a killer in a video game(Clock Tower II) and want to know whats the legend behind this so-called Hannya-Mask
He’s totally lying! The first few parts was true, but the part about the farmers beating her son to death is false. I haven’t watched this before today, but my prediction is that he killed her son....a little far fetched, but I also think he ate of him as well. A lot of what he said didn’t make sense, because how would farmers that had their harvest pillaged chase and beat someone if there’s nothing left to steal? Also, where would they find the strength if they had? You can tell that he doesn’t think highly of women even if they’ve showed him hospitality.
I've had the same thought when watching it. I think he has killed their son and husband, just to get his hands on the young and attractive wife. Not sure about the cannibalism part though, but where's famine such occurrences are not rare.
I think thats the whole idea, people not proud of the depths they go to eat. He is painted untrustworthy and self centered, it think that is the intended implication.
Would be interesting to see this movie redone, but take place in vietnam. Starving viliagers totally uninterested in politics, lunging on wounded of both sides after agent orange and search and destroy killed their chances at an honest life.
I love that idea! And as a director I would pick either Bong Joon Ho or Kim Ki-Duk to shoot it in the style of "Memories of Murder". Nothing gets solved in the end, no one knows who did it, who's the murderer.
@@livewithpatienceandcomposu2510 Memories of murder is a classic. I also love "a dirty carnival", two korean films no one i know has seen but should. I think memories of murder predates the big trend that started with oldboy. I like it much more.

God damn it William Defoe
Are they speaking a dialect of Japanese? It sounds Japanese but different.
I can't tell. I'm not a native speaker nor an expert on Japanese.
Southern dialect

The look on the face of that samurai who gets caught eating rice is unsettling as hell. Creeped me the fuck out the first time I saw it.

Same here, same here :D
Creepy old movie. I was searching for infos about the mask, because i saw it already at a killer in a video game(Clock Tower II) and want to know whats the legend behind this so-called Hannya-Mask
It's Oni or the Demon mask
@@MythsandMysteries2k24 no, they're right. the mask featured in this movie is a hannya mask. it represents a jealous female demon
1:40:33 acting is just so real it feels like it hurts and that actually scares me.
If I watch this, I would need subtitles for the metaphors.
Hey you think you could do the rokurokubi movie?
And I love it! 🥰
great movie ! beautiful girl
Willam Dafoe. He recommended this movie……
Same here
I don't know. That movie about Japan's version of Hell was way weirder than this.

Hachi es el tipo de wey que se liga a todas en un Conalep
Why is everyone in the comments so mean just enjoy the movie

goated movie
Best RUclips video
is it just me or does the old lady sound exactly like goku?
The ending...
Left me with a real sense of WTF. Still found it interesting.
@@SidewaysBurnouts I haven't seen it either. Thanks for the tip! Definitely going to check those two movies out!
@@livewithpatienceandcomposu2510 Most of my favorite Japanese movies never go online, except "battles with out honor or humanity" by fukasaku is on tubi, his best movies in my opinion are "graveyard of honor" and "street mobster". For korean movies I love Chaser, I saw the devil, etc. those are always on netflix, like The wailing. Best Korean show is "kingdom" about zombies in fuedal times.
@@SidewaysBurnouts I've seen only "The Wailing" out of the titles you've mentioned, although "Street Mobster" sounds familiar to me as well. Might have seen it.
