Would have liked the video better if Rane Roatta was left out of it. Someone who rides in a car for part of a race (Unbound) and then later rides across the finish line doesn't sit well with me. No problem with the riding in the car to get your bike fixed at a checkpoint but crossing the finish line (acting like you completed the whole race) turns you into a cheater no matter how much you say it turned into a training ride after the mechanical.
That guy Rane didn't even compete with the elites but in the Gran Fondo category M19-34. And not very fast judging from the results... no surprise with such a dangerous setup 😱 Safe to say he didn't take a taxi 😉
Thanks for the kind comments. We're hoping to do loads more, but if you missed it, here's one from Lenzerheide - ruclips.net/video/hlzVriV6onY/видео.html
I use the Schwalbe Ones, even at 700x35 they take an amazing amount of abuse and seem pretty fast. I've had no punctures since switching to them a year ago.
I use a compact groupset and a cassette withe the lowest gear on my gravel bike. I don't race, but it gives me all the gears needed for all roads and terrain
I love the pathfinders , but they weren't in stock at the local shop last month and I tried some of the Sawtooths in 700x 42 's and they are great too , super fast and grippy
I stick with SPD so I can get gravel shoes to be able to comfortably walk in! If you're racing that's different, of course, but I don't want road shoes to be off the bike with.
It really depends on where you ride. The majority of racers will likely remain clipped in from start to finish and conditions were perfectly dry. If you'll do any walking/pushing or conditions are muddy then MTB pedals and shoes will likely serve you better
I put on 38 cm wide handlebars on a road/gravel/city (pick one) bike and it has way less leverage than a 42. For good steering abilities a 42 cm is a must for gravel paths. And at least 32 mm tires. 28 just don't give you enough support in loose turns.
Worth noting that when sated 1X groupset at 6:33 that this 11s GRX has been swapped with a Garbaruk cassette & derailleur cage/jockey wheels to get better gear range
Have to say the two I really struggle with are this one and Toms Skujiņš. I would wish that they never featured in races, but they're both lovely people so I want them to do well 😂 Liam
My wording of that might have been a tad off. Likely that the pro road riders prefer the stability and float that they're used to with their road pedals. When you're putting out that much power for 5 hours, it matters...I guess 😂 Liam
I am sure it does. I think I might actually wanna try too someday. I just find it practical to have one system for all bikes and walking with SPD-SL is unsexy at the very least. Regarding btires I wonder wether WVA choice might have affected his puncture: 35mm Terreno Zero probably had too much pressure for this kind of course. Just my 2c.@@bikeradar
That 23-cm bar is ridiculous. It contradicts the concept of a gravel bike where you have normal-size drop, bar with a flare for better stability and control. How much stability and control gives this almost TT-narrow bar?
Some back of the napkin math shows a 23cm bar on a 140mm stem is only 20% more twitchy then a 40cm bar on a 100mm stem. Some of the most extreme examples (200mm stem on a 22cm bar) are just as if not more stable then a traditional setup.
Anything more pointless than multiple ‘aero’ tweaks to the nth degree then slapping on hundreds of pointless tiny wind sails that travel at multiples of your speed INTO the wind?
@@kramer450 narrow bars, skinny tires, 72 degree head angles. We found out after 30 years of riding that those don’t work. And now gravel riders start all over again.
Road pedals on an off-road race is a 'No No' for me..... And the clown with those ridiculously narrow bars is having a laugh.......there is a reason MTB-ers use wide handlebars.
What was your favourite tech nugget from the race? We would definitely like a go on Rane's bike 🤑🤑Let us know what you think in the comments 👇
This is far more interesting than looking at tech at the Tour de France with all the vastly different set ups and the whole jerry riggedness of it.
I use nearly all, what pros use on a gravel bike: road groupset and pedals, Schwalbe Overland tires, but I prefer an aero belly over pro 🪒 legs.
Aero belly is next level terminology. Love it🫄

I’m ignorant on this subject but fill me in or point in a direction of an article about it if you have a second.
Great video. Delving into tech for any race is great, I hope you could do something similar for XCO MTB as well. This gravel track was better imo.

I Rode with Pathfinder 42 s-works 😅😅 on this race
pulling out my best rice cakes for this one
Does anyone know the Storm bike model on 0:11 ? thank you
They will invent stumpjumper in 10 years
Watch this space 👀😂

I wonder if the 'old' Di2 grx is really superior than the new 12v mechanical, since they choose the older one.
Some nice gravel bling in there.
We do love a bit of gravel bling
3:15 what are those bolt holes for? Can't think of anything that'd mount there other than a cafe lock lol
I’ve been very happy with my Tufo Thundero tyres they seem as tuff as my old Pathfinders but faster and cheaper
I hadn't heard of them. Looking at their site they have a nice looking lineup of gravel tires.
@@festerofest4374 great tyres, one of the fastest. Old european brand.
I ride an ultegra 11 speed with 50-34 front and 11-40 (forty) in the back. 33 mm schwalbe x-one speed tires and deore xt xc pedals. Smooth and easy.
Pathfinder Pros or Trigger Pros would be my go to for this terrain
Niewiadoma schould sound like knee via doma. Thx for great video.

Did I also see a lot of Specialized Cruxes instead of the diverge in the video?
I don't think anyone at the sharp end of gravel racing is on the Diverge really as of now
Yea it seems to be the choice for this race. But the pros often just want whatever is lightest
Schwalbe G-One R up front, G-One RS in the back
Most of it makes sense. I think the pedals are a matter of habit. Not sure if the power transfer is better.

He also used to ride for Bahrein, he has been teammate of both

Where did the sinful looking bars/
banana guy end up? He wasnt even on the race results?
He was in a completely different category than the pros
garcia isn't a teamate of mohoric
It is amazing how easily people fall for the marketing trap!
Most people are getting brainwashed if they follow any media.
Giant Revolt...ing
Aren’t those 23cm wide bars now UCI illegal? Why were they allowed to race?
Because they’re faster and safer!
Any Classified setups?
Not that we saw, but they are sometimes tricky to spot, especially at the end of a race with dust-coated components

Is it just me or does the presenters t-shirt make him look like an extra from a movie set in an american prison...?

How can you say Rane Roatta is your favorite rider when he is a cheat? 😂
Yeah maybe don’t highlight a guy that DNFs another race but skipping checkpoints but still crosses the finish line pretending like he did?

Crazy how they make all the same design mistakes that MTB did in the 90’s
Time is just a flat circle and fashion always comes back around
Ah yes, gravel racing. They all make the same mistakes MTBers have made since the 90's.
What mistakes?
Given how different today’s mountain bikes are from the ones in the 90’s it’s hard to say those mistakes have been happening since the 90’s.
Spoken like someone who thinks oval chainrings and Biopace chainrings are the same thing...

Considering it was a road race, I’d choose gp5000 s tr 32mm
did you ride the track ? i did and would definetly go with a 40mm tire with profile ;)
