    You can half the weight to be added by buying stick on lead weights that you secure with screws and put it right at the back just in front of your tail wheel 👍

    • @JamesRCPlaneTech
      @JamesRCPlaneTech  Год назад +1

      good point. I was trying to keep it clean on the outside but I probably could have done that and it wouldn’t look too bad. Save a few ounces.

    • @stevearmett1565
      @stevearmett1565 Год назад +1

      @@JamesRCPlaneTech you could have cut a small hatch there and secured it to that inside the plane for asthetics it also means that in the future if you ever needed to fix the tail the lead would be removable 👍

      Ya, I could have done that as well, and just covered with Monokote. Good point

    Job well done...Sad in some ways tho ..Really liked watching the build vids that now are all done....Hopefully your build table will have a fresh set of plans on it again soon....Good luck with the maiden..

      Thanks I really appreciate it. Its been a long process because the videos take up a lot of time as well. Im planning on doing another build soon. I need to evaluate the best way to do that, because Id like to speed up the build process. Hopefully the maiden on this will be successful and Ill be building something new not fixing this! Lol

    James,
    Congratulations! Your Smoothie came out looking amazing, the contours, color scheme and aluminum prop are perfect.
    I want to again thank you for this series, you went through every step of the build and honestly I probably could not have done it with out your guidance in a few areas.
    When you went to balance it I was like crap, adding weight behind the CG stinks. When you pulled out the oval fishing weights and said you were going to use them I was like “WTC”, then you proceeded to pound them flat with a hammer and I said “brilliant”.
    I hope they stay where the are when you do aerobatics. I was wondering if you could have cut out a hatch on the bottom to give you access. I like to use the tire weights they sell at Harbor Freight. For about $8 you get enough for a lot of planes. They come in thin squares and seem to fit well wherever you need to put them. I too epoxy them.
    I am really looking forward to the maiden, I bet it flies smooth!
    Tom

      @JamesRCPlaneTech  Год назад

      Thanks Tom, I appreciate it. Ya there are probably better ways to choose to balance, lead weight like you mentioned are a good choice and you are right also that I could have cut my way in somewhere and even back further to reduce the amount needed. Then just patch with Monokote. Honestly I was antsy to get this thing done and went the easier route and maybe not the ideal way. If I was not able to keep the final weight below spec, I think I would have cut my way in near the tail section. Hopefully the epoxy will hold them in. If not I will most likely go the way you mentioned. Thanks again. I appreciate you insight.

    Never wrap a 2.4 ghz receiver in foam. They need some cooling.

    • @JamesRCPlaneTech
      @JamesRCPlaneTech  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the insight. I’ll check it out and see how it goes. The foam I used is not super thick and not very dense like some others so hopefully it wont get overheated, but I’ll check it and perhaps remove it and make some foam standoffs instead so air can circulate better. Thanks.

      Hi, its just the spinner back plate, I had it installed without the spinner cone just so I could judge how to shape the nose of the plane.

      Hi, thats a piece of “extruded foam” insulation. It’s sold in hardware stores or online. I cut it to size as needed. Its strong, stiff and light, and perfect for making little supports and things. I get it in 2ft squares from Home Depot. Here is an example:
