I’m a 70 y/o Caucasian woman from Texas, but somewhere in another life, Aretha & I HAD to be true blood sistas. Nothing better than good soul music and she was the best!! R.I.P. Ms. Franklin, my Queen.
All Hail The Queen!!! This was a fantastic performance by the Queen of Soul!!! Nobody can do it like "RE"... I love me some Aretha!!! Thanks for this posting... This is my jam...
Wow! I was doing some work when this tune came on in the background. I'm 61 and something in my little brain connected with this deeply, even though I haven't heard it since growing up in NYC. I can't get this out of my head now, and why should I? I've been suddenly reunited with my past by none other than the Queen of Soul ( I prob didn't realize it was her back then!)
wonder why she doesn't sing this in concert. she leaves this era out of concerts. no jimmy lee, no who zoomin who and I knew you were waiting. This era is ignored except for the TIED, DRY FREEWAY OF LOVE
+cee eumo She sings her biggest hits from any era. Her concerts will feature whatever album she's promoting at the time. This video was made around 1988 when Jimmy Lee was still recent. These days she's singing songs from her latest Divas Classics album and not doing Jimmy Lee, Another Night, etc.
+cee eumo That was 1994. She did it then but she sings whatever she's currently promoting at the time. These days that's Rolling in the Deep or I Will Survive. In 1980 it would have been United Together but not now.
In 2015 I actually met one of her on and off again back ground singers in LA (just by surprise at the mall), told her I was a BIG FAN, we spoke for 30mins, and asked her about it and she said for years people have requested those same tracks all the time and behind closed doors she says no, I'm not interested in adding those songs to any of my performances. And when she does surprise fans with a song they haven't heard in over 20 years, it's because someone begged her enough (usually family or friend) and she finally said yes. but only once. So to answer the question, Aretha Franklin does what ever the heck she wants to do. She is stuck in the 1960's and 70's. Her concerts are very repetitive. 90% of the time All we hear are the late 60's a few songs from the 70's, maybe a gospel song, and freeway of love. I have heard Respect, Natural Woman more than I'd like to hear it. So if she didn't sing those in a show and replaced it with one of these songs, it wouldn't hurt her show at all. And she has left out Respect before. But this has nothing to do with not being able to squeeze in all of her hits in one concert. There is no excuse as to why she won't sing any of her hits from 1986-1998, except for the fact it doesn't cross her mind and she doesn't want to. Out of the 1000's of concerts, shows, and TV appearances she has done she has had plenty of opportunity to sing these songs in question, but Aretha always waste her time singing other artist songs instead. Especially songs she's not very good at singing like Nessun Dorma and Adele. Usually the 1st time around was fine but everything after, thumbs down. Yes other singers have sang other artist songs in their concerts, but Aretha will drag it out for YEARS and sings them over and over again. How many YEARS did she open up with Jackie Wilson's song higher and higher. Or Instead of singing Rolling In The Deep, and messing up the lyrics Every Single time, she could fill in the gabs with her own hit songs that no one has heard in over 30 years. I'd love to hear A Rose Is Still A Rose, A Deeper Love, Willing To Forgive, Jimmy Lee, Another Night and more. Before it's to late. And no one can say she can't sing those songs anymore, her voice can't handle it. Aretha's voice can't handle her songs from the 60's anymore and she still sings those. So I guess we'll all have to reach out to Aretha in some way and beg her until she says fine ok, yes.
Did she ever sing this live in her concerts after 1989? I've noticed that she ignored singing a lot of her 80's material in the last 30 years (minus "Freeway Of Love). Personally, I think she didn't like a lot of it. because she was being revamped/reinvented as someone who could also sing Pop, in order to keep her career relevant with the changing music tastes. I love "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" with George Michael, as well as "Through The Storm" with Elton John: those hits kept her current and up-to-date with different audiences. But there are few (if any) videos of her singing them live after 1989. I wonder why?
Not sure if she sang all of her 80s hits, but she had many throughout the decade, including #1 R&B song (Get it Right) and many more. Her early 80s hit Freedom (Blues Borthers movie which was seen as comeback of sorts) is one think she sang, but so many seems like would be hard for her not to. www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop/8471264/aretha-franklin-80s-thrived
