The game has been already released in full version 1.0 on the 20.6.2024 and the pre-order era was finaly ended. This review came closely before the full release, but so far is still the most comprehensive and professional. Thanks

My favorite city builder game!
One of the unique aspects of the game is that you can build your city from the scratch (literally). You need construction matirials like board and bricks, workers, machines and time to just build one single building. Not to mention all the logistic challanges to produce and bring all those resources. I think all these challenges make the player extra proud when they finally build a well functioning republic.
This is the BEST review I have seen on this game. Great job!
I'm psyching myself up for a full realistic attempt, and I mean attempt. Soul crushing disaster happens in the least expected places. It's also a huge investment in time, huge.

I'm still mentally preparing myself for a realistic attempt. Seems very overwhelming but can imagine it's very satisfying (assuming the game doesn't completely break you).
Yes, the game needs 1 more step up in game speed. It currently only has normal and 1 speed up. But sometimes, if youbare waiting for something, even on the fast speed it can take literal ages.
@@spamfilter32 Engine won't handle it. There is built in higher speed in debug/cheat mode but simulation breakes if used with anything more complex on the map. Even on good machine game visibly slows down when it has to simulate 100k+ population.
I love this game, so much freedom to build and manage. You can practically micromanage everything and I love it.
Like communists micromanaging all parts of the everyday life of the people. Brings back memories, lol
@@Kaesemesser0815 You should learn history first. Under Stalin, there were more acquittals in courts than under Putin. Under Stalin, you could choose your own leader at an enterprise. Under Stalin, you could have dismissed a deputy.

I love this game, I originally dismissed it as a Gimmick game back in 2020, but on a whim I picked it up on sale a few months later. This has become one of my most played games which is something as a semi-functioning adult. I usually save if for play sessions I know I can dedicated a few hours at a time. But I can not recommend this game enough to those looking for a challenging city builder. My go-to description is, WR:SR is the Dark Souls of the City builder genre. The learning curve is step, but skill is king and when you figure out how to make it all work, it's never the end, as expansion could still ruin your republic when not done right. It is a little micro-managementy but worth it when it all works.
Also, forgot to add, I love how this game has been Developed, these devs were open and honest all the way, listen to the fans and had a passion for this game. WR;SR isn't perfect, but it's a masterpiece of art.
1k+hours in the game since 2019 and all I can say is this is the very best management/colony sim/city builder I have ever played.
Great overview of an awesome game
I played this a ton in early access! Had a really great time back then. A few months ago I tried to do a new run with the new (then) water and crime mechanics, but I never quite got something to self sustain. Need to get myself to do another run at some point though (that actually works).
This is a game I've decided never to install. The dealbreaker is: I know it would suck in way more hours of my life than any reasonable adult can put into a game.
You can.. take a sunday and play. That's what i do and sometimes Sunday is my favorite day.
@@master1941 I firmly believe I should be able to do that... in a few years, once my daughter hits late adolescence and begins her own independent weekend life in full. ;)

I've put 130 hours into this game so far and I have still not turned on all of the systems it can let you manage. Most recently I've spent a weekend learning the waste collection and recycling industry because I wanted to increase farms yield with solid fertilizer that is created from bio waste. Attached to that comes building demolition service - after you enable it, demolishing a building is not free. It requires manpower and mechanisms to deconstruct or blow up a building and then the plot needs to be cleared of rubble and other waste. You can still quick demolish a building (not in realistic mode though) but it costs a lot of money, like around 1/3 of the erection cost. And like the video says: if you read this and thought "dear lord, that's awesome" the game is for you. Otherwise proceed with caution and watch some tutorials first.
There are so many nice buildings in the Steam Workshop, including some really interesting Art Deco structures.
WR:SR is by fsr the most honest of city builders. It is a State Capitalist city Builder, and doesn't shy away from it. All other city builder games are also State Capitalist, but try to pretend they are (quasi) free market. Take Cities Skylines, with their Industries DLC. The city owned the industries that were placed down. All profits went straight to the cities coffers. At least WR doesn't pretend that you, the player, don't own the industries.

The end goal of WR:SR is communism, in creating an economy that is sustainable to the point where money has no value.
The real meta is that the player is ‘the state’, so to truly become the definition of a cashless, classless, stateless society, the player has to walk away from the controls.
It’s funny perhaps a wee bit morbid, as a native singaporean the central focus and concept was ironically very very close to heart

So no war production? Conscription? Even without war being declared, you gotta build up for the cold war.
There's no war production, but all the pieces are there. Vehicle production is a big thing so maybe they'll visit that area in the future?
You can deal with both the East & West, so something that looks at that tension - and possible consequences - would be an interesting direction. (If the the developers continue adding to the game after 1.0 that is).

Not all republics or even countries were involved in serious military build up. Not out in the open at least.
For example, Moldova was essentially a country sized wineyard and vacation destination for mid-high level party members (which backfired once there was no longer close cooperation between republics and country ended up with little to no industry).
Some republics were more into mining as well, especially the ones deep in Siberia and Caucasus.
And even independent countries (though definitely not sovereign) like Czechoslovakia or Poland had their own "specialities". For Poland it was heavy industry (shipyards, metalurgy, military production), while Czechoslovakia, especially Czech-part, had more focus on precise manufacturing (I think lasers were a part of the portfolio) and automotive.
It also backfired once communism was over because each country had "holes" in development and not every specialty was sustainable in the free market economy (like shipyards and mining in Poland).
Same happened in Federal Jugoslavia - each republic had their own specialty, though its execution was way better in general.

@@DrAhzek A valuable point - but of course hugely simplified. For instance, Polish mines and shipyards had every chance to survive and prosper; it's just that the EU countries bought out most of the industry of Poland, or forced it to be closed down, in exchange for an instant inflow of goods Polish people were so desperate to get. In many ways, it was a hostile takeover, which never ended (for instance, to this day big international corporations operating in Poland are paying almost taxes to ots government) If not for that, Poland might easily have become "the China of Europe"

But, as a person with experience of actually living in a communist country, I'd say it misses some key points: centrally planned economy is not effective; people within it are much less motivated; people in power keep stealing more and more for their private needs... Sure; with the rise of the country new challenges do appear here, but only as minor hindrances, addressed with relative ease... Huge entropy of the communist system is its inherent feature, and it doesn't seem to be present here!

I see completely where you're coming from. However, when I played the game I never got the feeling like the message of the game was 'Socialism is great and it works' - but the opposite.
One important thing to note - and something that addresses some criticism I've seen of the game - is that it's made by a developer who has first hand experience in all these things. They're a Slovak studio, and just like you, I'm sure they have the same criticisms and insights of life in Communist states and the subsequent aftermath. Again, I never saw this as shining a positive light on Socialism or Communism - just using it as a springboard for a resource focused city builder.

I understand you so well! If the game presented a "colony on the moon", we could take it for what it actually is: a funny exercise in optimization. But with this theme, the game can foster many idiots' thinking that communism is (or at least might be) a good thing... This game doesn't show the crucial flaw of the communist system: inefficiency combined with oppression leave people more and more dejected, and the system is bound to collapse on itself...

@@miceliusbeverus6447 tbf, games of the kind (which don't deal with human factors, or do it very poorly) might indeed be best suited into the soviet setup - as soviets indeed had tendency of treating people as mere resource (like lumber) and handled them as mindless drones. Rather than moonbase, where arguably mental stability is even more important, colony of cyborgs fighting against humanity would be more fitting. One of the main flaws with the communism is that its incredibly mechanical and thus is inherently failure whenever applied upon human society.
I can't really criticize the game in particular, I haven't played nor watched it - nor going do.
But media of the kind has proven to produce some really weird Soviet simps (and obscure encounters with them - to put it mild).
The rant was because of that, and for whatever reason there's been whole bloat of "let's play that Soviet whatever" lately.
Finally couldn't resist randomly venting about it.
