If you are having an issue opening a jar. You can either, one, take the back of a butter knife and hit it on the edge of the lid. Secondly you can hit the bottom of the jar, with the heel of your hand (my preference), you will hear a pop sound.
@BerylShereshewsky As the Grand Master Bruce Lee said: “You have offended my family and you have offended the Shaolin Temple." At least those of us on the West Coast and the Temple in Seattle, WA!!! I know you're an 'east coaster' at least at the moment, but many of us on the West Coast can be greatly offended if you bring your Miracle Whip around 'us' lol I'm not kidding! Many Aunties, Uncles and Cousins, etc. will raise a great fuss! And at the very least mock you for it! But for my part it only seems like your discriminating against us in the west because: "Where's the Best Foods Real Mayonnaise?!?" But since I am very old and getting wiser by the day I know and fully understand that peoples 'taste' in food and a great many things especially when it comes to 'comfort food' and everything else can be dictated by what they themselves have experienced. As for myself - I love and eat Boxed Mac & Cheese!!! Doesn't matter what kind! But I do prefer plain Kraft. As Mayo goes - it doesn't matter 'what I get' (if ordering something), but IF i had a choice I would choose Best Foods. lol In 1976 my auntie said: "You want a salmon sandwich?" YES! When she handed them to us!!! It was a Half-Smoked Salmon (jarred) mixed with Best Foods Mayo and a sprinkle of finely diced onions; "Half-smoked Salmon Salad Sandwich!" As opposed to "Egg salad sandwich" where the egg is replaced with what ever salmon! I think it was the 16oz sized jars. Drain most of the juice or drink it like I do LOL Drop in one tablespoon of mayo and stir... Add onions and stir... Taste and add mayo to your liking. I've found for 'me'/'us' you need almost 2 tablespoons worth of Best Foods Real Mayo! That was especial cause of the Half-Smoked Salmon, but we'll do it with regular canned or jarred salmon too! Not as 'impactful' but still good cause of the Salmon! I've also done it 'the day after' with Baked Whole Salmon! LOL With us Natives of Alaska - "Half-smoked Salmon" is an Especial delicacy! Thank you for sharing and have a nice day! 😺Beryl!!!😺
Great idea, just yesterday I was commenting with my cousin I would love to see what is in other countries fridges
As a Kentuckian, beer cheese and pimento cheese is a way of life here. My mom is mostly a miracle whip person. I would consider the main US mayos to be Hellman's, Duke's & Blue Plate. Blue Plate is always forgotten because it is mostly sold in the south.
I do keep my (rolls of) films and few bags of coffee (divided in small portions) in my freezer/fridge, I’m sure not many people shoot films 📷🎞️ these days. 😊
The person who put in the last dish 100% should consider doing audible books, such a lovely soothing voice.
Oh 100%. That or voice acting
My exact thought too! Beautiful, calming and her narration 100%!
Oh my gosh! Agreed!!
Seriously. She's giving me shivers 😅
Agreed 100%
I was laughing my brains out when the Filipino seller who sold you Lady’s Choice talked to you in Tagalog and questioned your life choices (paying so much for delivery)! So Filipino. 😂❤
The banana bread makes sense to me. Growing up my mom was praised by the other neighborhood moms for her 'homemade cakes.' It was cake mix she put mayo in instead of the eggs. She swore it made the cake mix richer and more moist. Nobody ever caught on either.
I add mayo to cakes and quick breads for years. Always a hit.💝
My mom did this too!!! Where did they get this brilliant idea 😅
No idea, maybe from one of the women's magazines that were all over the place. 💝
> richer and more moist
Yeah, it's adding additional oil.
My mom didn't do this (add mayo to cakes), but I've been hearing about this trick for years! First time I've seen it in banana bread though--brilliant!
Ladies’ Choice is also the go-to mayo brand in the Philippines, so they might be sold in Filipino stores near your area, Beryl
I feel guilty now, ever since Kewpie arrived in the Philippines it became my go to mayo, and there's like less than 20 pesos difference in price hahaha.
During the holidays Lady’s Choice were sold out. I had to be creative to somehow imitate its taste. I mixed cheap mayo and kewpie mayo together.
I buy my mayos based on how well they sound as a female-targeted razor brand.
Lady's Choice: ✅
Hellmann's: ❌
Ladies' choice is actually a Filipino brand.
@@jacers14 As per their website : Lady’s Choice was first established in California. It started as a quality food brand with a wide range of products under its umbrella - canned meats, pickled vegetables, jams, and spreads.
You do what I loved about Anthony Bourdain. You bring people together through food. Understanding more about each other through the cermony of it all.
Using mayo in cakes - especially chocolate cakes - is very common in the Southern United States... so I'm not surprised at all to see it in banana bread (and I'll definitely be trying that - it sounds great!). 😄
Hellmann's Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake is my birthday cake
Chocolate mayonnaise cake is one of my favorites.
I just made it! It's absolutely delicious! My bf who hates bananas raved over it too 😍👍
We always added Dukes mayo when making gernan chocolate cake 😋 (Tennessee)
Love Polish salad. There as many versions as there are people in Poland! And we always cut it "too big" according to our mums, grandmas etc 😂😂
its just a salad.. not unique to Polaks
It is actually Russian. It is Olivier salad. But I guess it is cuter to call it Polish.
Ham is a very Russian addition to the mayo salad, you wouldn't really see it in Poland. But (usually canned) peas/corn are a common addition here, as well as raw apple.
Russian salads are awesome, I love beat salad.
I guess it depends on the region. North East Poland adds ham as well
In Romania we add diced beef instead of ham. Canned petit peas but not corn and you can substitute roasted red pepper for the pickles if you don’t care for them. Roasted red peppers slices go on top of the salad for presentation. Also the cut needs to be much smaller, about the size of the pea.
We make plenty of side dishes using mayo + ham combo. Now not so popular because everyone is watching the calories, but still can be found in some places. We usually mix mayo with horseradish (traditional) or other spices, like capers, paprika, pickles and then put it inside rolled ham, slices of chicken breast or other cold cuts. But sure, the two cuisines will have plenty of similarities, being strongly connected to the French art of cooking.
Lesser Poland also adds ham
As a Polish woman I confirm: there are two mayonnaise camps in Poland. I was brought up on Winiary, my boyfriend doesn't recognise any other than Kielecki 😄 the finer you chop the ingredients, the more respect you get 😄 And definitely peas for the salad!
I came here to say it needs peas!!😊 my bf is a German born Pole and makes this a few times a year. I make my version too- I'll add diced green apples sometimes. And we like extra dill ❤
We call it French Salad in Croatia
Kielecki is basically solidified vinegar.
Winiary FTW!
In Brazil we make this polish dish very very similarly to this. I’ve learned how to make the mayo from scratch with my mother in law, that learned from polish settlers in the south of the country, but in general all over Brazil we use Hellman’s. We make it with potatoes, carrots, hard boiled eggs…I like adding diced purple onions and chives. All nice and diced, if there are lots of people together we gather to help peal veggies and dice them ( we dice the veggies before boiling them, I like them usually 1x1cm), and if we are feeling fancy we add raw apples, ham and raisins, mix it all with the mayo and put it in the fridge to have it cold at the time of the meal (remember , here it’s terribly hot). We usually have it on weekends as a side on that Sunday lunch to accompany white rice, a great golden roasted chicken, green salad, farofa (never forget the farofa) and of corse, a freezing cold Guaraná. Ahhhh, in Brazil we call this dish Maionese, that means “Mayo”😂. I was smiling the whole time the polish girl was showing the dish because for us Brazilians it became a staple weekend dish, I truly felt connected to her. So amazing that connection I didn’t even know we had.
The text you got about why you paid $40 for mayo is so funny but tbh if i worked at that store my curiosity would be the same and i would ask.
II wasn't expecting the chat for the Ladies Choice Mayo to be in Filipino hahaha.
Yeah me too. Go Filipino store, i don't have one nearby. For me to reach a Filipino store who is actually owned by a Filipino, i need to cross boarder to Austria although when we go to Asian groceries they have some Filipino products.
I wasn't sure I'd be into a mayo episode, but this was so fun to watch. And now I totally want to make my own mayonnaise with my immersion blender just to be excited about it coming together like Beryl was.
It was soooo fast! I was shocked!
I'm one of those people who doesn't like mayo. I make it for tuna or egg salad, though. The process is fun! Maybe if I try new kinds I'll find one that works for me. Sour cream isn't my thing either.
The person who narrated the Taiwanese dish has such a calming voice.
It sounds like an A.I. voice, could it be A.I.?
@@ruthi.9808 yes definitely agree with you.
She sounds like Cate Blanchett reading a recipe book
I've used mayo in chocolate cake instead of eggs, it functions exactly as intended, bring richness and fat. That recipe also called for a stout beer to intensify the dark chocolate. Let me know if you ever want to do RANDOM ingredient in WHAT?
there are also other controversies about Polish sałatka jarzynowa, one is about adding an apple to it, which i recommend, but it has to be chopped finely and is best eaten the next day, and the second is about adding canned corn or green peas (peas are in my opinion more popular)
i'm very happy that you liked majonez kielecki :)
I agree! You need apple and green Peas to complete the salad.
Majonez kielecki is the best❤
I add both those things as well! Very tiny apple :)
If possible please make a part 2 to this video showing more mayonnaise because I love to see you use Mexican mayonnaise because it is made with lime. The mayo is delicious..
×EDIT×
I am not vegan but it be nice to see also vegan mayonnaise thrown in to be used for a vegan based dish. Let's not forget about our vegan buddy's..
How did I not know this about Mexican mayo?! I want to run out now & get some; but, I can’t.
I love you for both, introducing me to mayo made with lime, which has to be fantastic, and also for thinking about us vegans, you are a treasure! 💚
Reading this comment was crazy because I didn't even notice other countries mayo didn't have lime on it 😭
McCormick makes mayonnaise with lime juice. I bought it once from a Mexican grocery store here in Delaware. I love lime. It’s really good!
On street corn! I know there's a proper name for it but it was always sold from carts so that's what everyone I knew called it.
During the Chickpea video, you asked about ways to use the juice/aquafaba, and making vegan mayonnaise is one thing you can do with it!
I’m Filipino and I didn’t know lady’s choice mayonnaise was used in other countries 😊 it was nice to learn a new way to utilize it. By the way, you can find lady’s choice mayo at the Filipino market you went to in Woodside, Queens! 😄
Lol! It's not even Filipino so why be surprised? Just because we're using it most of the time doesn't mean it's ours. It actually originated in California.
@@sahvee730yes, Lady’s Choice was originated in California. But only Malaysia, Singapore, and Philippines sells their mayonnaise.
@@Lookcatbanana You didn't get my point. The OC assumed that LC is a Filipino mayo.
@@sahvee730 well, I assumed that too. Because many western brands came to the Philippines and started making products exclusive to the country.
@@sahvee730 naggoogle ka lang before commenting feeling mas matalino na to oh. 😂
I'd recommend adding finely chopped, apples to sałatka jarzynowa, it's quite common in some families. The crispness of the apple evelates the dish to a whole new level - just make sure you pick a variety that's not too sweet.
Apples are a must add in sałatka. And the fineness of the veg chopping does make a real difference.
I really really enjoyed this episode. You should do one with mustard. I prefer mustard over mayo. Kewpie mayo is really good
I love that idea!
@@BerylShereshewsky Grey Poupon is my favourite mustard, it's always in my fridge
@@BerylShereshewsky you could show how to make mustard, too. I make whole grain beer mustard with yellow (English) and brown (Indian) mustard seeds and IPA. you let it ferment for a few days, then add white wine vinegar (or whatever vinegar you want), salt, and honey or sugar if you want to add sweetness. if you want it super-yellow, add turmeric, but the basic recipe is much like Pommery whole grain dijon mustard, especially if you use French white wine vinegar or verjus, which is really what make a dijon mustard.
@@BerylShereshewsky Ha, a mustard episode would be excellent. There's this Czech dish "Španělské ptáčky" (Spanish birds), which has nothing to do with either Spain or birds. It consists of beef rolls stuffed with mustard, eggs, pickles, bacon or speck, and sausages, and cooked in a sauce that uses some mustard as well. It originally came from Germany or Austria (as Rinderroulade), but now it really is a Czech staple. It would be fun watching you make this :)
I have at least 6 mustards in my fridge! Mayo is only for crimping grilled cheese.
Using anything but Duke’s is like sacrilege in the Southern US 😂 from sandwiches to salads to even in baked goods like chocolate cakes. It’s made with additional egg yolks and vinegar so it’s extra creamy and tangy.
Right? I was expecting Dukes in the pimento cheese recipe.
Dukes Mayo Pie
In the South, it's always either Blue Plate or Duke's.
I live in the PNW, and we just got Duke's in the Fred Meyers here about two or three years ago. Thank God. People outside of the South probably won't understand, but Duke's is one of those red-line type issues...I can pretty much guarantee there's been blood spilt over non-Duke's mayo.
My Mom used to do a chocolate cake with mayo and it was delicious. I need to find the recipe. She also had a cake recipe using a tomato soup can... Really!! I will try this banana bread but need to replace the flour with gluten free flour. I have the celiac disease since one year! (i was diagnosed in January 2023). Love your channel. Greetings from Canada!
I do a microwave chocolate cake with mayo. No measurements. Dump in flour, chocolate (cocoa powder, chips, candy, whatever), squirt of mayo, sweetener, liquid and a pinch of baking powder & salt if I remember.
My mom also used to make chocolate mayonnaise cake! I'm from the USA.
I remember the tomato soup cake too. (Also Canadian)
Dylan Hollis featured that tomato soup cake in one of his vids! It was really really yummy when I tried it at home
Look up mayonnaise cake on the internet.
Wooow the lady from Taïwan has such a soothing voice, litteraly asmr 😌
This is ultimately my favorite food series on YT. As a Taiwanese-American I've had cold noodles at various food stalls and restaurants when I visit because of how prevalent it is everywhere in Taiwan, but this was my first time seeing it homemade which was delightful! Glad you enjoyed it and even made your own mayo😄🥰
oh yay, you've got the excellent garlic press. tip: you don't have to peel the cloves before pressing. it's actually a little easier to clean the press if you don't peel. it's up to you, of course. also, to julienne veggies, I personally think the Asian method is easier than the European method and just as good -- just cut into thin long slices on the diagonal, then fan those out and slice into julienne. fast and works really well. you can also use a mandoline (wear a cutproof glove -- Dyneema gloves are thin and STRONG) to cut thin slices and then julienne. there is a julienne blade for most mandolines, but I'm not a fan.
The Taiwanese speaker needs her own ASMR channel. She has an amazing voice!
It sounds like a A.I
The Taiwanese speaker sounded like AI or a phone sex person to me 🤣🤣
I was totally thinking the same thing!
In the Netherlands we put mayonnaise on fries and it’s the best.
The Polish Saładka really resembles a Dutch recipe called ‘Hussar Salad’ ( the origins of the name is unknown ), and we top it with a layer of mayonnaise and paprika powder
Mayo on fries is just heavenly.
Greetings from your neighborhood Germany. 😊
Had a Belgian friend in college that got me to try mayo on fries. Ever since, it's my french fry condiment of choice...
It isn't unknown why it's called hussar salad, it's russian. The recipe became popular in the 1800 when the Netherlands had a Russian queen. Hussars are russian mounted soldiers
Reminds me of my potato salad goes great with sausage s on the side. Love
What Brand is most common?
as someone from the south, i only ever heard pimento cheese pronounced as pimentah cheese. of course in the south we were all using real mayo. another surprise ingredient is green tabasco. adds another level of zing! and yes, it’s always best on white bread with the crusts cut off
For making perfect size uniform cubes for the Polish salad we use a little device, looking like a jar lid rim only with the wires stretched in a criss cross pattern. You push it down the boiled veg, a small distance/ section at a time then twist round. Voila, perfect cubes 😊
A friend bought me 3 of those back from Poland many years ago. I gave one away, one broke and I still have 1 left and I use it every time. It makes it so much faster to cut using this device. For the eggs I first put them through an egg slicer to get the horizontal cuts and then through the device for the other cuts.
That's the comment I was looking for, I have never seen anyone chop everything by hand (by anyone I mean my grandma or my mom)
Where's Duke's??? It's a Southern US condiment tradition, BTW. 😊😊😊
Seriously, Duke's should have gone into the pimiento cheese instead.
@@stefthepefstraight Facts! I'd never put miracle whip in it lol
That Miracle Whip would get you on a real serious town-wide old lady sh-tl-st, and you wouldn't even know why. People you never even met would just be shaking their heads and not talking to you!
Reading the comments, Joanna seems to have been right about the controversy! 😁 I'm not Polish, but we make a similar salad. In my family, we grate the carrots, pickles and celery root, so it's more potato- and egg-forward. We also add canned peas (yum!) and no meat at all. The salad is commonly eaten on Christmas Eve here. Traditionally, we fast all day and our Christmas dinner is supposed to be festive, but still meat-free in our tradition. Although a version of the salad with meat is also widely spread and I love meat, I simply prefer this salad without it. Tastes like Christmas to me. 😊
I gotta say I loved Beryl feeding the chat by saying she'd add a few things, haha. That salad looks magical.
Hey girl hey! I know you get this all the time.. but I wanted to say thank you for just being you. I have always loved trying different things but was always afraid to try them and hurt someone's feelings If I didn't like someone. With my food allergies to dairy, shellfish, seafood, and cherries, and lastly my Religious and Cultural beliefs of not hurting cow. I always thought my range of food would be limited.. you have opened my mind to new thing.. much love.❤
Oooooooooh, you about to start a fight with that pimento cheese! Southerners are particular about their pimento cheese. Miracle whip in pimento cheese is an extremely controversial choice. I’ve also never heard of adding anything other than the mayo, cheese, and pimentos except maybe some heat or some salt and pepper.
Beryl, Rajat's Hand (we take what we can get hehehe), Asha and friends. Peel before you boil....you can toss the peels in with the peeled veggies if you want some of that taste in the veg. (and then you've begun a veggie stock as well, from the other recipes in this episode you had shallot and green onion scraps, celeraic peelings and more carrot peelings) .
If you enjoyed the peanut tahini sauce you can make it yourself from scratch. heat the oil, add garlic and seasame Seeds And-Or Peanuts, cook til toasty add dry chili (or any chili really) and toast 30 seconds more, don't let it burn. Cool a bit for safety, then blend (you have the immersion blender) salt and sugar to taste. it can be all sesame for sesame sauce, all peanuts for peanut sauce and the mix in any proportions...I like 50-50
When making immersion blender mayonnaise try to have the egg yolk on the very bottom. put the blender over the yolk, turn on and slowly lift up.
The taste test was fun. Hugs to all you guys Jim Oaxaca
When you talked about doing a more "full" sandwich with the pimento cheese, I thought immediately of a pimento cheese BLT! The crispness of the bacon and the acid of the tomato goes really well with the creamy spread. If you want to go mega-southern, use fried green tomatoes and toast the bread!
When I recommend this channel I always say "It is Amazing over there. It's a Real International Family, bound by the Love of Food. A place where you can learn Beloved family recipes that turn into Your family's beloved family recipes. "
😭❤️❤️
🤗
Never thought I'd see someone from my city of Adelaide, South Australia! How exciting!
I am an all in Dukes mayo fan. So delicious. All these dishes look really interesting to try.
In California, mayo is either Best Foods or Kraft brand. Never heard of Hellman's or Dukes.
Thank you Beryl for inviting me to participate, what fun!
It was cool seeing someone from Adelaide, my maternal grandmother was Kuarna/Ngarrindjeri mob, so I obviously love the t-shirt.
I love mayo so much, I call it Vitamin M because it is so necessary. This is my favorite episode thus far.
Hey Beryl, thank you for refering my mayo video in your blog. 😄 I'm so glad it inspired your mayo recipe. Taiwan mayo is exactly like you said, sweet like frosting. Greeting from Germany. 🙌
It was sooo good ive used it so many times now!!!
This video is healing for my inner child. I'm American but lived in Europe for much of my childhood. When I was around 8 we moved to England and I started attending a local school. I took my lunch every day, but could not take a PBJ due to a classmate's peanut allergy. No problem, I started taking ham sandwiches. The first day I took one, I was mercilessly teased because my ham sandwich was unlike the meat-paste sandwiches the other students typically brought. The teasing continued for a few days before I stopped putting meat in my sandwiches... which became mayonnaise sandwiches. Occasionally I'd ad a slice of cheese. It's refreshing to see mayo being celebrated, because for so long it felt like a symbol of my shame and being bullied in school. Love your videos Beryl!
In France, our staple mayo dish is œufs mayonnaise. It's as simple as it sounds : hard boiled eggs with mayo.
The eggs must be hard boiled but still have an ever so slighly jammy yolk and the mayo is homemade with Dijon mustard, neutral oil and raw eggs. We even have a yearly œuf mayo competition and a championship.
C'est trop bon
My family, as I think most families in Poland add fresh, crispy apple and canned peas to sałatka jarzynowa 😋
Brasil too
Another fun video, Beryl. Here are a couple of suggestions for you to make your prep easier in the future:
1) Lady’s Choice is the most common mayo in the Philippines. I bet the Filipino store in Queens, where you shopped in your Filipino food shopping video, most likely would have Lady’s Choice on offer. It would have been worth the call and the subway ride to Queens instead of the whopping $42 for a small packet of LC mayo. (By the way, the texts screenshot that you showed indicated the vendor was Filipino since they used Tag-lish [Tagalog-English]) in their text to you.)
2) The easiest way to peel a potato after boiling is to score the raw potato first before boiling, as follows: with a paring knife lightly score the potato in the midsection (equator, so to speak) while holding the potato north-south pole. Once boiled, the skin will peel off quickly by gently squeezing the potato on each of the poles with your fingers. Give it a try. Easy peasy.
Keep up the good work and enjoy all your creations. We certainly do.
The beanie pulled over the face gave me a Fat Albert flashback. TV show from several decades back.
😂😂😂
I was thinking the same thing!
I love community videos!! They make me feel so connected and joyful
This episode was so much fun, thank you Beryl and everyone who contributed!
My favorite way to have (cold/refrigerated) pimento cheese - made with Hellman's and no celery - is in a baked sweet potato. The combination is *so* good and I was introduced to it at a restaurant in North Carolina, where I grew up. Also, for a classic pimento cheese sandwich adding a bunch of sprouts and sweet pickles is perfect. My family makes pimento cheese with Philadelphia cream cheese, sharp cheddar cheese, Hellman's, onions, garlic powder, cayenne, paprika, a touch of Worcestershire sauce, and diced jalapeños.
Yum, that's a great idea.
yay, so happy when there's a new beryl video! I'm here for the food and the vibes!
I love this channel so much. Beryl snacking in the pickles on the sly cracks me up and speaks to my soul
One of my favorite episodes to date. It shows you had a lot of fun😀. Thanks.
hi Beryl! if you see this, some recommendations for sałatka jarzynowa from my family - always add diced green apple for texture and acid, (polish) mustard (sarepska is best) for depth of flavor, and lots of black pepper.
also highly recommend eating it on a piece of buttered soft white bread - especially with a little slice of cheese (my favorite is królewski or edam). i hope you try this! enjoy!
Fun episode. First time I had homemade mayo, I was thoroughly surprised at how easy it was to make and how fresh and delicious it could be. I am a huge fan of garden tomatoes and mayo sandwiches in the summer, every day for weeks on end. Delightful. Thanks for always surprising us, when you surprise yourself, Beryl.
I had some of the pimento cheese spread she was referring to and I decided to try it on a bagel, it was heavenly 🥰
This may have been my favorite episode yet! All of the dishes looked so delicious and I’d eat every single one!
The Malaysian dish looked great. We have the same (in Bangladesh) but without mayo. Dim biran ( egg fry omelette) is a quick go to dinner, lunch or breakfast! Just add eggs, chillies, onions and spices 😊
Your videos have convinced me to try Kewpie Mayo 👍🏽
I love how she politely saying that “Russian” Olivier salad is just better 😂 than Polish version. As someone who tried both of them … couldn’t agree more .
Well... this was a rather poor version of polish salad. Normally we'd add apples, green peas, parsley / parsnip root, probably some onions, so like half of the ingredients are missing :) one big difference is the meat - absent in Polish version, usually added in Olivier, only sometimes also in Polish, because there are so many versions. The other difference is the vegetables should be cooked longer and not in water but in broth, altogether with meat, spices and other vegetables, like onions, leeks or garlic that don't go to the salad but flavour the other ingredients. I mean, Beryl probably tasted the good version of Olivier and less-than-half-made Polish. I like both versions, just the meaty one is a bit less interesting. Every time I have the vegetable only salad I am surprised how good they can taste just on their own. Hope she tries the proper version, too!
No offense, but the Polish salatka jarzynowa normally contains many many more ingredients:
I for myself use boiled potatoes, boiled celery, boiled carrots, good pickles, eggs, peas and apples. Furthermore, the cubes are too big. If you want to make a good salatka jarzynowa, the cubes need to be as small as possible, not bigger than 5 mm.
I have had both (including home made in Russia) and I prefer the Polish version. The addition of ham or other meat product does nothing for me. The Polish one usually includes peas and may include apple, corn and/or onion. Also mustard.
@@toochaotic7752 The Czech version is similar to the Polish one: everything that Beryl used plus parsley root, eggs, peas, a bit of mustard and a bit of pickle juice, sometimes also apples and/or onions (although I personally find onion overpowering and I generally dislike apples, so it's not in my version, but it is quite common). I would never put ham or other meat in there, it sounds quite horrific, and not many families do it in my country. Honestly, I am not a big fan of this type of salad (I much prefer the Austrian potato salad with broth and vinegar instead of mayo, and just potatoes and shallots), still, I make it for my family every Christmas, and the richer version is good.
Love this. My hubby loves mayo so thanks for the new recipes I can add to our rotation!
Also maybe consider a video idea of struggle meals around the world. Would be fascinating to see different cultures and how they survive on struggle meals.
Hi Beryl, the butter knife trick that I use is to whack the narrow back side of the blade on lid several times. I usually do about 8 equally spaced all around. It should come off no problem that way!
Much like the Banana Bread near the beginning of this video, one of my favorite cakes and the kind I most prefer on my birthday, is called Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake and it is delicious! My mom started making it in the 1980s, and it's probably older than that.
Mayo chocolate cake! Amazing and palmetto cheese in grilled cheese also Amazing!
I’ve always used a butter knife to open jars, but I learned to just whack it on the edge of the lid a couple times to break the seal. It always helps for me!
Seeing this video reminded me that I learned about Kewpie mayo from Beryl and watching this channel continues to expand my culinary experiences. Thank you Beryl!
That Polish vegetable salad is basically potato salad with carrots and celery root. I might give it a try the next time I make potato salad. The only thing i would do different is add some onion and both sweet and dill or fermented pickles and make the salad dressing by mashing up 2 or 3 eggs with a fork and mixing it with the mayonnaise and a little bit of pickle juice.
Definitely add some onion, and some mustard. I would be careful with adding the pickle juice, because the wetter the salad the shorter the time it will keep for (if you're going to eat it all in one day then that won't be an issue).
@@toochaotic7752 I've always added pickle juice just as my grandmother did. The pickle juice is a flavor enhancer and you only add a little to the dressing. It takes me about 5 days to eat a dish of potato or macaroni salad.
It's a very poor version of the salad. Add tinned peas and a finely chopped crispy apple. Don't add onion, it makes the salad go off much more quickly. Instead of pickle juice, add a good spoon of mustard.
Your maniacle laughing while measuring out the mayo for the cake had me totally laughing with you. It's funny! It's so much mayo! lol!
love the community video idea! always fun to cook along with you, beryl, mayo is delicous! 🛴❤
Beryl, I just discovered that my local grocery store carries kewpie mayonnaise. You're right, it is really good!
I can’t tell a difference between Kewpie and Miracle whip.
Beryl, my family used to add peas to the polish veggie salad but we now add kidney beans because my mom can't have peas anymore and beans fit well too. And we also add diced apples 😊
So excited for this video this morning!
Some good boardgames there at the end.
As a total boardgame nerd, I'm glad to see it.
I am not a big fan of mayo. I do not buy it often, but I am a true Southerner, so when I do, it's Dukes. It is fine on some sandwiches, but if I find it on a hamburger, I eill scrape it off. As usual, Beryl, a very interesting video!
I don’t mayo on burgers either. When I lived in SoCal I always had to request they leave it off…I think everyone there added mayo to burgers.
Here in the south it's duke's or nothing ! I gasped when I saw miracle whip going in the pimento cheese. 😂
Tomato mayo sandwiches are fantastic.
Fun episode. Our reaction & perspective on ubiquities ingredients is so interesting. I was kinda loosing my mind when you called Miracle Whip mayonnaise… it’s salad dressing. Well, it is mayonnaise, kinda 😂.
Pimento cheese is something I really want to love. Mostly, it’s just ok for me. Some time back Chick-fil-A featured a sandwich with pimento cheese & jalapeño, I think. It was quite good.
Texan here -- I had the same reaction! I wanted to yell at the monitor that "It's not mayonnaise!" every time Beryl mentioned Miracle Whip. All my collective Southern female ancestors would be clutching their pearls to hear of pimento cheese being made with "Miracle Whip." Also, I suspect Chick-fil-a, being Southern, got pimento cheese closer to how it should be than any other kind you've had. You might want to also try Chicken Salad Chick -- not only are their forty kinds of chicken salad great, they have great pimento cheese as well. And Southern Living magazine has several recipes you might want to try, depending on you preferences for fat, spice, cheese, etc. Long live Mayo!!
Amazing dishes not all was my favourite but some i could try
In Piedmont, a region in the North-West of Italy, we have a very similar vegetable salad to the Polish one, we call it Russian Salad. It is made with potatoes, carrots and peas (all boiled), pickles and variations can include raw bell peppers and canned tuna. You can peel and cut the potatoes and carrots while raw, you just need to time the cooking properly, the potatoes will go into boiling water instead of cold water, it will also allow you to keep the cubic shape of the potatoes dice without any crumbling.
The omelette dish is almost exactly the same as we cook omelettes in the Philippines. Minus the mayo of course. You need to cook it in lower heat, and flip it faster. The browning should definitely _not_ happen. In my case, I don't even flip it, I just keep stirring it until it cooks, so it's scrambled. But they taste the same anyway. 😅
Also weirdly enough, Lady's Choice is a Filipino brand. 12:19 The seller was asking you in Filipino why you paid so much for it, haha. Lady's Choice is the mayo of choice for dishes like macaroni salad or sisig. That's why they sell it in California where there's a huge Filipino-American community. They obviously thought you were also Filipino and were worried that you might have overpaid by mistake.
Not really a Filipino brand since Lady's Choice Mayonnaise is owned by the British multinational company based in London, Unilever. It is also the parent company of Unilever Singapore, Unilever Malaysia and Unilever Philippines where it is currently being sold. It's more of a "household name" kind of brand since it has been introduced in the Philippines in the 1950s.
@@lady.general That's what I meant. Not OWNED by a Filipino company, but more as a brand that originally became popular in the Philippines before spreading elsewhere. The Lady's Choice brand itself is originally American, and was introduced to the Philippines in the 1950s by its parent company (former American colony, bla bla), along with Royal Pasta (another Filipino household name brand of spaghetti and macaroni).
Though quite successful in America in the early 20th century, Lady's Choice was never really a household name in the US, as evidenced by the fact that Beryl didn't even recognize it as originally American. Meanwhile, it thrived in the Philippines, due to the fact that the Philippines retained a lot of American dishes that had become traditional over the years for festive food. Things like chicken macaroni salad, fruit salad, Filipino spaghetti, tuna salad, steamed fish with mayo, etc. which still remain holiday staples even today. Lady's choice found a niche it fit into very well.
It was only acquired by Unilever in 2000. I assume it was only introduced to Singapore and Malaysia after that. And I assume y'all use it for very different dishes.
You should do a pimiento cheese themed show. There are so, so many ways to make it, and I have to believe that people around the world have their own expressions of it.
I use multiple cheeses, including a smoked cheese; mayo mixed with cream cheese; fire roasted piquillo peppers, and minced fresh jalapeño…minced red onion…
I don’t know of any cultures outside of the US that have pimiento cheese. It’s solely a US thing. Cheese is actually a relatively new export to many countries in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and Pacific Islands.
Great episode! I really want to make my own mayo as fresh mayo is better than anything, now that I know it’s super easy with an immersion blender. I also love that we got to see your board game collection. Love it!
Hellmans is my favorite too lol loved this video so much, thank you for sharing and all your hard work ❤ also the lady from Taiwan has the most beautiful calming voice 😊
It’s funny how I used to like Kewpie when it was a rare choice for me, but once I got to live in Japan for a few years and all I had was Kewpie, I started craving the more tart European version and have not come back to Kewpie since 😂
I believe there are at least three different versions of Kewpie. In the US, I have gotten all three of them depending on where I shop (supermarket, Asian store, or Costco). You should try each; they taste distinctly differently.
I love you. I watch your videos whenever I’m sad ❤
Loved this episode- so fun!
You can almost buy Ladies Choice on every Filipinos store😅
I was also wondering that as Beryl did go to a Filipino store in New York previously in a video.
Mayo banana bread is the best! You can also make it into banana muffins, and works really well with VEGAN mayo as well!!! Great hack for all the vegans out there :)
Beryl, your dedication to making as much as the recipe yourself as you can is unmatched, and appreciated 😁😁
Cakey banana bread could have chocolate frosting on top. Very good on pound cake also. Fun video. Thanks to all.
When I saw the new video I hoped so much it will feature the Polish Kielecki which is a staple in our contry, and it does! :D It is also one of my favourite episodes because I am a mayonnaise maniac;) So happy, Love you Beryl
Me too... and a little mustard (something mild like Sarepska or French).
Gotta admit, Miracle Whip in pimento cheese sounds like blasphemy to me. From Georgia/Alabama, and I've never had celery or chives in mine. It's just the pimentos and cheddar and mayo with a few spices (like cayenne).
I do love me some pimento cheese, though! My German husband has been completely bought in :)
Yeah, I had no clue what to think of that. We only use mayonnaise (Duke’s 💯), pimiento, cheddar and crystal hot sauce in ours. Crystal adds a touch of acidity and some heat. Louisiana brand hot sauce has a secondary hot sauce brand called Red Rooster. It’s one of my favorites, but difficult to find in N. Texas.
I agree, this recipe was blasphemy. I'm from NC (and have lived in GA, AL, and TN) and Miracle Whip and Pimento cheese should not be in the same sentence. Neither should any vegetable aside from pimento. Duke's mayo, pimento, cheese, a few spices, and a dab of Texas Pete (or vinegary hot sauce of your choice - Crystal, Tabasco, etc.)
I'm willing to overlook celery as an avowed raw celery hater, but the Miracle Whip is a step too far. That ain't mayo!!!
@@meeshaphrenic How to say you’re from NC without saying you’re from NC: your hot sauce of choice is Texas Pete. 😁
(My sister in law is from North Carolina, and this is their staple hot sauce)
@@sevenandthelittlestmew Yep, it's made in Winston-Salem!
Re: julienne carrots - get a julienne peeler! I have one that's a standard peeler on one side and julienne on the other. It's so good for carrots, cucumbers, daikon, etc.
That was excellent. I'm going to give a few of those a try
Miracle whip is not mayonnaise. It’s a salad dressing.
I'm really glad he recommended to put a slice of butter on top of that cake because I was afraid there wouldn't be a lot of fat in it.
Hi Dave, lovely to see someone from my home town on here. Great recipe! 😊
Cheers, and thanks to Beryl for the chance to represent SA
My Gran used to make us Hellmans Mayo and Stroemann bread sandwiches as an after school snack. Yum.
Add chocolate chips to your banana bread recipe it will make everyone happy.🎉
Shake them in flour first so they don't sink to the bottom of the bread
Beryl, I'm inspired by one of the guests you did a clip of during this video. YOU NEED A CAT. It can watch while you cook and even help you taste some of your creations!
Cats make everything better.
I ❤ Dave
Lady's choice makes me think of the song from Hairspray, but I'm totally here for the food too. Already tried adding Mayo to eggs. It's amazing!
Gosh. Never knew I'd love a video about mayonnaise this much!!❤😊❤❤
Miracle Whip is not a mayo, its a commercially made Amish Cooked Dressing
Yet it tastes the same as kewpie 🤔
No it doesnt Kewpie has no sweetness @@van3158
My ex liked Miracle Whip, which I did not.
