I know a woman that was a WASP and she told me that she flew a plane so complex once that she was more than half the way across the English Channel before completing her take off checklist.

If she was flying or ferrying aircraft in the UK during the war she would more likely have been doing it as an ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary) pilot rather than a WASP because the ATA oversaw and controlled all ferry flights in the UK from 1939 to 45. I'm not sure how many pilots who became WASP's flew for the ATA but Jackie Cochran and others certainly did. There is a really good book about how the ATA formed and its influence called Spitfire Women in which the part Cochran and the US female ATA pilots is featured. If you are ever in the UK and the subject of female pilots in WW2 is of interest take a trip to Hamble near Southampton and visit the memorial to these brave ladies, there is also the ATA museum at Maidenhead which is also well worth a visit.

@@RandyMabusedJWGrace Stevenson is mentioned on Page 238. I was lucky enough to meet Mary Ellis at IWM Duxford when she released her autobiography, which is also well worth a read.

If one of these women died while flying the family had to pay for return of the body and for the funeral...in stark contrast to any male pilot who died in a similar fashion.
