    Putin has never acted on impulse...never...he has often said in public that geopolitical matters have a mathematical logic to them....this military campaign wasn't dreamed up 2 months ago rather it has been on Russia's strategic drawing board for quite a few years. Putin and the Russian elite thinkers around him are strong and well versed geopolitical chess players and thus have taken bold action (which is incorrectly viewed as opportunistic and somewhat emotionally driven by many so called experts) based on all the pieces, positions and potential maneuvers of his US/NATO opponents. Notice how Russia has barely responded in word or deed to all the monumental sanctions etc? ...Barely a word, that should give everyone pause... The Russian's knew the potential consequences but they did it anyway; why? ...Desperation? No! Pressure? No! Were tricked? No!.... No mention of the Minsk Agreement or the fighting and death toll it was supposed to prevent. And I remember, in the 1960s, the US not wanting USSR missiles in Cuba, yet the West is unable to see the similarity with NATO missiles in Ukraine. After the West's dysfunctionality with the pandemic, like Canada's state of emergency and the US closure of the Keystone pipeline, this is just a continuation of their state of unreality.
      So Germany has reversed its energy policies, yet how long will it take to build the infrastructure and arrange a resilient fuel supply for it? And the British government is still resisting the restart of fraccing. Does nobody in Western governments understand industry?
      The West has been developing policies over bathrooms policies and climate change compliment battle tanks, and now reality has hit them. Their mistakes are basic and long term, going back well over two decades, so the current jingoism in the legacy media looks so crass. And it makes any resolution to the problems in Ukraine that much harder.

So much wisdom and insight, informed by history which we continue to ignore - we don't teach it, we don't refer to it, and consequently we don't learn from it... so we repeat it. I just wish, as an Australian that John Anderson would run again for Federal Parliament. This country desperately needs people of calibre who can bring civil, intelligent, wise and experienced dialogue to debate on policy, on the future of democracy and the direction Australia needs to go in. Ukraine has woken the conscience of the world but I wonder, as Niall Ferguson said in another interview with John Anderson, will the West's 'attention deficit disorder' kick in and in three months from now we've moved on from Ukraine and the lessons there, will Germany ramp up its spending on NATO. The West has weakened itself and Conservatism has become a dirty word. Not a good outlook. But thank you John Anderson for flying the flag. These interviews as so valuable.

He has an awareness of so many points of view that it's uncanny. Most of the time we encounter a man with a fount of knowledge who is all too eager to tell you which direction to take and that his conclusion is the best or most accurate one to adopt. Boris Johnson is one of the biggest critics of Russia and the UK isn't part of the EU anymore.

      A valid fear. And your being encouraged should be tempered with the chilling fact that the Obiden administration abruptly halted the flow of immigrants and refugees from Cuba and Venezuela (because those people know first hand the painful failings of Socialism and were seeking to escape it), while continuing to encourage the flow of what they perceive to be next generation of Socialist "voters" from other central and south American countries. The first group wants to come here to escape the yoke of totalitarianism, the second wants to come here for free stuff.

    • @TJ-vh2ps
      @TJ-vh2ps 2 года назад

      PS: the police are not the military. Nothing that you said has anything to do with foreign policy and national security: it is all about domestic policy and individual security from abusive police. Don’t conflate compassion for the oppressed with weakness: that is a common false trope that is often trotted out by conservatives who want to paint progressives as weak. Yet conservative politicians and news outlets who wanted to defund and disband NATO (though thankfully not Mr Hanson) are soft peddling the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while progressives are stepping up and pushing back against Russia.

    • @danielhagan921
      @danielhagan921 2 года назад

      @@TJ-vh2ps Sorry to tell you, TJ, that Tootall is correct. You list a lot incorrectly. First off, the southern border is a national security problem. It has to be far better controlled as terrorists, Fentanyl (killing above 100,000 Americans per year) and criminals are coming through now in great numbers. We're less safe than a couple years ago. This is an American border that is controlled, at this time, by drug cartels, not US authorities. Central America and Mexico would be affected so it qualifies as foreign policy AND national security. Abusive police are rare; good ones are the rule. Defunding the police is weakness, not only where the police are involved, but it shows a weak country, the USA, to the eyes of the world.
      NATO was never going to be defunded and Europe made sure of that by finally paying their way after decades of freeloading. Trump had to threaten stopping payment to get them to pay "their fair share" as liberals like to say. Trump only briefly (a few days) held up support to the Ukraine to get information from them on Biden's corrupt, deal-making kid. Doctor Hanson (remember he's a renowned PH. D) supports Trump and says Biden is the most dangerous president we've ever had. While we're at it, don't forget what happened in Afghanistan - Biden's weakness on display and weakness invites dictators to be aggressive. If Trump were in the White House, Putin would not have become so provocative in Ukraine this year. Biden had halted Trump's military support while Putin readied his army on Ukraine's border - more American weakness. Biden has been terribly weak on Ukraine support and I personally wrote to involved politicians on this to demand help be stepped up. Biden and company are only starting to support Ukraine (now), to the degree they should have, a full year ago. But come on, who's really running this presidency? Biden has only been tough when he talks; he's actually quite timid.

    Great Book from Mr. Hanson so far. One example of eroding divide between resident and citizen in Australia is the constant clammering by New Zealand citizens for benefits and welfare. We have a special relationship Kiwis and Australians but barriers should be removed towards citizenship for Kiwis instead of the clawing for benefits. One example is the opening of student loans to NZ citizens.
    The nest arrangement for Australia is that Kiwis come and work and live in peace but for those who's Australian dream does not pan out the Australian government is not responsible for propping them up with welfare.

      @@ge12mma345ge12 HI Daphne O, Ukraine is a sovereign nation - with its own language, history, culture... Ukraine like Byelorussia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Georgia (and 9 others) were invaded or under the control of Stalin after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. By 1924 Stalin exerted an extremely harsh control and systematic incorporation of these countries in Russia proper forming the ~ "Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics" (USSR). Following that he purged all his perceived opponents and oppressed the populations which cost humanity 18~20 milions people between 1921 & 1937. This not not taken into account the millions of citizens sent to Siberia to work the Gulag forced labor camps (Cf Solzhenitsyn, Nobel Prize winner's books). World War II enabled Stalin to consolidate his power over these nations (they had a common enemy, Nazi Germany) and extend his powers to what became the East of the "Iron Curtain": Poland, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, etc... Around 1990, Mikhail Gorbachev (Peace Nobel Prize winner), the head of the USSR, decided to "release" these various countries and let that have elections - this led to the break down of the USSR i.e. they rejected communism and their way of life improved significantly. Now, Putin, a former KGB officer what to reestablish the "glory" of the former Soviet Union, to that effect he installed a puppet government in Byelorussia, invaded Georgia, Dombass, and Crimea over the last 15 years. Ukraine is next. Ukraine has large amount of oil reserves, grain, technology (nuclear power), .
      Hope it helps, Ukrainians do not want to be "taken" by Russia - they want to maintain their independence. This is all well described on the web, I would recommend reading news from Australia, BBC (UK), France, and/or Germany as these networks will give you a more objective view of the situation as opposed to the "Big Media-dominated" US news channels and yes, I am American but our country has changed as you can see by the world situation consequences. Hope it helps, Ciao, L
