High Fliers: Women Aviators of World War II
The Intrepid Museum in New York held an exhibit earlier this year on "Women in Aviation During World War II," honoring the achievements of the courageous women pilots who tested war planes straight off the assembly lines. If you missed this terrific exhibit, watch Penny Colman's interview with curator Jessica Williams about these pioneering aviators and their decades-long struggle for recognition.

The story about Marguerite Higgins is not exactly true. She wasnt allowed inside even though she arrived with her General boyfriend. Allied forces were already there and they had orders not to let anyone in. She may have came back and entered days later but not at the time it was discovered/liberated. Makes me wonder if any of these stories are really accurate.

The experiment of woman military pilots in ww2 was a failure. NOTHING came of it really. That starkly showed that the differences between men and women in society are vast and may be too large to overcome in slap-dash emergency facades and charades. Further, apparently nothing but rules, roles and ranking changed significantly between then and now. There are NO significant numbers or examples of women voluntarily progressing after the wars to contemporary performance standards required for these and like so-called sexual discriminatory professions. After gaining all the freedom and support men have and more for such military service and roles, NO significant numbers of women have shown or exhibited any significant, new, much less, even just comparable efforts and skills, hardly at all. Only tokens and unusal examples. There is no such thing as the glass ceiling to women or minorities in america in federal service. Aircraft arent discriminating against race or sex.

Jeff is an example of sad primitive man. Everything he says is wrong and he obviously resents most bitterly the progress of women. Women pilots regularly fly the Prime Minister of Canada to international conferences/meetings in Canada's Air Force One. They have had a difficult time breaking through the glass ceiling in the military because of people like this man. The best response to Jeff Walther is to look upon him as jealous and feeling his own lack of qualifications. May I suggest the book "Out Standing In The Field" by Sandra Perron, Canada's first female Infantry Officer. For Americans and others it is a reminder that others besides Americans fight for the human rights of women. The ISBN # is 13:978-1-77086-494-8. Reading this book may help some people grow up.

@@maryrafuse3851 Canada's first female infantry officer rates a book? WAS it that hard? If so, what's combat/war going to be like? Is she going to lead troops into enemy fire OR send them off from the rear and survive any and all engagements no matter what happens to officiate at any and all surrenders? Is she an officer due to singular, personal, outstanding leadership in fighting ability and efficiency or a token? a dangerous weak link, a socio-politically imposed liability, so predictable, presence at any point in the process IS the weak point in that process, at least, as we are currently integrating female combatants/pilots/politicians. But the price for all of it will be paid by men and boys, while being denied all manner of recompense, defense or alternatives.

I know a woman that was a WASP and she told me that she flew a plane so complex once that she was more than half the way across the English Channel before completing her take off checklist.

If she was flying or ferrying aircraft in the UK during the war she would more likely have been doing it as an ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary) pilot rather than a WASP because the ATA oversaw and controlled all ferry flights in the UK from 1939 to 45. I'm not sure how many pilots who became WASP's flew for the ATA but Jackie Cochran and others certainly did. There is a really good book about how the ATA formed and its influence called Spitfire Women in which the part Cochran and the US female ATA pilots is featured. If you are ever in the UK and the subject of female pilots in WW2 is of interest take a trip to Hamble near Southampton and visit the memorial to these brave ladies, there is also the ATA museum at Maidenhead which is also well worth a visit.

Nah, you just go anyway where you are, jumping out the plane, however you must...and clean it up later with water...that`s how life works in war. Such BS is of no concern. You do what you have to do.

If one of these women died while flying the family had to pay for return of the body and for the funeral...in stark contrast to any male pilot who died in a similar fashion.
