I love Foster, York and Block, but I think Block did it the best she was Reno. Foster (who did great in the role) wasn't trying to show off and that's what Reno does. York (who brought everything she had) tried to hard to get notice, Reno shouldn't have to try. Block was Reno she got noticed without trying, she was simple in appearance, but when she walk in everyone knew Reno was near, she shouldn't try to get notice she just simply is.
lol this is super SUPER LATE but i saw both and while Sutton was fantastic SJB just was Reno there was no element of discomfort in SJB's performance. u could see Sutton wasn't 100% comfortable with the character it's just a bit out of her type and thats amazing, & good for her. she won the tony and totally deserved it. SJB was just better simply cuz she was more believable

Sutton's nasally tone has always really bothered me. I have always found her voice kind of grating. It isn't a voice I can listen to for long. Stephanie has a voice I could listen to forever. She is just spectacular and a gem of a talent.
Reno Sweeney is a “broad”. Ethel played her as such. So did Patti. Leslie was more of a “dame” …. Sutton was a little too “cutesy” for my taste, although she tapped the Good Ship Lollipop outta the role….SJB was a broad in the mold of The Merm . & Patti - I’m so grateful to have seen her!
as much as I adore sutton, stephanie absolutely blew me away with this one.
Love the richness of her voice. Shades of Lapone but less stagey and more controlled.
