Today, we are reviewing a brand new plugin by Waves, the SSL EV2.
I know SSL's quite well; I mix on a 4000 and have made many records on this console and many others around the USA and the UK when I lived there, so this is going to be interesting. I have very high hopes for the SSL EV2, because the recent reiterations they have done, like the CLA Mix Hub, have been a great step up!
The SSL EV2 is a brand-new recreation of the legendary SSL 4000E console channel strip, which they have made with full cooperation and authorization from Solid State Logic. Its new features include the original SSL ‘O2’ Brown EQ and the console’s richly saturated mic pre and line inputs, SSL EV2 delivers a new level of analog depth and detail - an elevated take on the timeless SSL sound.
SSL EV2 comes loaded with over 600 presets - including hundreds of presets by Grammy®-winning producers and mix engineers: Jacquire King, Stuart White, Joe Barresi, Lu Diaz, Dave Pensado, Rich Costey, Jack Joseph Puig, and many more.
The SSL EV2 Includes:
* Brand new modeling of the classic SSL 4000E console channel strip
* Authorized by Solid State Logic
* New level of analog depth, richness and detail
* New: Switch between the iconic Brown (O2) and Black (242) knobs
* New mic pre/line section for rich harmonic saturation
* Place Dynamics before or after EQ for more creativity and control
* 600+ presets by Grammy®-winning producers and mixers: Jacquire King, Stuart White, Joe Barresi, Dave Pensado, Lu Diaz, many more

What are some of YOUR favourite plugins? Let me know what you think of the SSL EV2 below!
Awesome thank you
Waves Studio Rack is changign how I work!
I can say one thing, I need him.
@@samgeiver that's cool!
@@serge1643 lovely!
I learned more listening to you explain why you're twisting which knobs than I have on most plug ins that actually try to teach those lessons. My current project that I've been tweaking along with you and yours, is already sounding better on the low end and the snare cuts. Thank you.
Thanks ever so much! I’m so glad to be able to help
I live for music, but honestly this channel does so much for my mental health. If I’m feeling down I just find one of Wazza’s vids. I don’t know what I’d do with out it
That’s very kind of you Chris!!
So this came out yesterday, I watched a bit and then left it for today to make sure I could watch it in sections so I could pay attention. Then this morning I started watching it more seriously and while listening to the song I was thinking "oh! Great song I could listen to this all day." Now it's the end of the day and between watching this in my living room when not tracking in my studio, I kind of did watch it all day. Really good demo of the plug in Mr. Huart. You make me play better. I'm very thankful to have your videos available.
Thanks ever so much Todd! I really appreciate it
This plugin converted me to SSL. Love it!
Marvellous
bought it and downloaded the multitracks. Super happy with this updated version of their SSL channel. I have all the different channelstrips available from all kinds of vendors and this one is for sure in the ballpark with UAD´s SSL E4000! Thanks for providing great content. I made a mix using only the EV2 plugin. Got the SSL glue for sure
Thanks for the multitracks! Always love mixing well recorded tracks.
You’re very welcome Dan!
Wow Got the drums in place so fast on my current mix! I really needed this! And wow love the results!
Just extraordinary Warren! Thanks so much for the demo, the multitracks, and your genorosity of time and spirit. You're an inspiring Teacher :-)
Thanks ever so much Mike!
wow we just got the upgrade email from waves what a tresure and then here you are teaching me how to use it better thanks Warren!
Marvellous! Thanks Sam for sharing!
11:17 haha! Great SSL plugin and great review dear Warren! I don't know for those people but I really enjoy this "on the edge" sort of saturation. And beside sounding good, it reduces those jumpy peaks!
Me too! Love pushing the gear to it's limits!
Cool that they updated it, the SSL Channel strip Plugin is the #1 most used plugin in my mixes so I'm happy when there are new versions coming out to test - thanks for the multi tracks 🤘
Thanks Ady for sharing!
The old gold is still the best one.
Even though this video is really just a review of new software, the way you did it, I'm sure everyone learned something new. I know I did.
Great video Warren, very much appreciated.
Thanks ever so much Dean!!
I've never had the pleasure of an SSL and I bought the Waves bundle
for what ever it was in 2008 , $1300 Canadian . I ended up only using the compressor .
I used this SSL EV2 today and now with this vid I'll be using it a hell of a lot more . Great vid , Thanks
The clipping LED is going like a kick drum!! This is NUTS! No seriously, thank you, Warren, once again : ) good demo
Oh no the red light is on! Haha thanks for your great comment
I'm stoked to dig into the ev2 this weekend. Great video, my friend.
Fantastic! Thanks Dustin! I hope you're well!
Hey Warren Please do the all SSL-style plugins shootout!!! I've been looking forward to it quite a while. With the release of the SSL EV2, it would be so great to see the sonic qualities and the "sound" each one imparts on a mix! Surely, they all have sharing characteristics with the SSL desks, but each one is different. Even the old SSL Waves plugin is way different than the CLA Mixhub. Not in a good or a bad way though. It would be nice to check how each one reacts to different sources!
Hej.
Svante from sweden here...
Great introduction to SLL ev2. It made me realise that its just like when i was a live tech many many years ago. It made my life much easier when mixing old school material. :-) Its a much more analog feel to it. So thank you wery much for this eye opener for me. I had tossed it in the bin but give the pluggin a new chans and now i am very happy for that.
I downloaded the tracks and made a mix in synk with your youtube-class ;-) I posted that i link in my previus post but it was removed. Sorry if that was not allowed, my bad.
Onece again a very big thank you. Now the lightbulb lighted up in my head :-)
😀
Best regards
Svante
By far, the best vídeo about this, and all other SSL plugins I ever found...
That was way better than the plugin, but a lot of "how to"(s) can boost the mixing quality of every possible viewer...
Thanks a lot, Warren. You did it, once more.
Wow! Thanks ever so much
Wow! That high end eq band doesn't sound harsh at all!! That's amazing!
That's the special thing we love about an SSL
@@Producelikeapro Exactly!
@@AMB666 agreed 100%!
Thanks a lot! Every video of yours is a holiday for my eyes and ears!
Thanks ever so much
Ahhh thank you so much for multitracks !! I want to play guitar over thoose drums man ahaha ! Have a great new week. ☺
Thx Warren. Great demo of the new waves plugin. Love the trick with duplicating the drum bus, learn something new every time with your mix sessions. Would love to see a shootout between Waves and the SSLs ownm plugin..
Cheers for this Wazza !!! I hope you and yours are fine and well !!!
Thanks Richard! Same to you!
After getting the SSL 4000 bundle from Waves I was hesitant to get the SSL EV2 but I decided to take a chance. I am very thankful I did. The EV2 just feels right when I use it, it gives me the feedback I am looking for when dialing things in and the difference between the Black and Brown knobs is quite distinct, really nice feature they added there. My mix chains have been seriously simplified after getting this, I don't know why but I can get everything I need with very little additional plugins. Thanks for the video!
Late to the party here. I applied this mix method in my Waves LV1 live console with fantastic results. Thank you for making the SSL mixing work flow so clear. 😀
This was really nicely done. Thank ever so much! 🙏🏽❤️
You're so good at what you do! An inspiration for a young guy like me. I gotta say, the recordings where amazing as well!
Thanks ever so much!
Great lesson. Love this. Helps me understand my mixing tools much more.
Thanks ever so much JJ!
This is amazing stuff. I’m just sitting here enjoying the feel
Thanks so much for such an informative video. I have the SSL G-Master Buss Compressor and love it - I use it on every project! I think I'm sold on the EV2!
11:12 is definitely my new favourite Warren-moment. I could not stop laughing. Amazing video as always and with tons of knowledge. Thank you Warren.
Haha thanks ever so much!!
Nabbed it earlier this morning before your demo. $39! Thank you for this demo!
Fantastic
I love waves SSL ! Sounds so great! Need to check this one out!
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Thank you so much for this Warren. To be honest, with all the Black Friday sales going on, decisions were becoming hard to make. This video nailed it perfectly. Purchased. Thank you. 👏👏👏🙏🙏
That's wonderful to hear! Thanks for sharing
This was nicely done! Thank you ever so much! ❤️🙏🏽
Thanks ever so much to you too!
This is the best break down of using the SSL 4000 Channel in a mix - Ever! The SSL Channel is my fave on live instruments. I started with the Waves SSL and later migrated to the UAD version which has a different feel in the sound. i am looking forward to see how the Waves upgrade is different and how it compares to the UAD and other versions. Would like your review on this since you have a real SSL Desk to compare to. Always enjoy your channel and like how you really show the unique good stuff of all the products you review.
I LOOOOVE this thing. I have the 9000J channel which I also love and it almost convinced me to get an actual mixing board. The EV2 has convinced me thoroughly. That EQ solo button has been the wheelchair I so desperately needed to work strictly on a console-type plug-in. Now the only "outboard" stuff I use is on the master bus and other instrument busses or sub mixes. I use the EV2 on the individual channels just like a console...until my mixer arrives!
PS~ Now that I've had a crack at the multitracks I have to say that in spite of following along with the video, this is a moderately difficult mix!. The electric guitar, piano, and vocals fight for space and it took some serious negotiations. In the end it all worked out beautifully without sounding like a carbon copy. Thanks for sharing!
After having this plugin since the day it came out, I just learned that you can shift-click the Threshold and Ratio knobs that they will move at the same time! So Cool! :-)
Thanks for sharing that!
@@Producelikeapro You're welcome my friend! :-)
Great info here Warren thank you!
Thanks for this Warren. TBH, I've been getting by on stock DAW plugins and a few critical plugins like Fab Pro-Q but haven't used any Waves for a good while. This demo really sold me and I just bought the channel. Cheers
once again, thanks a lot for the great info and tips!
Thanks ever so much
Wow, what a great Sound! You are so talented! 👍🏿😎👍🏿
i love the ssl native , thx for the video. super like always
Thanks for watching!
Nice plug! I am using the Solid State Logic versions of Channel strip 2 and Bus compressor 2 on everything. Just got their X-EQ2 for M/S and mastering/bus eq. Did a live stream tracking with them and making sure Windows 11 plays nice. All good! This one sounds great too! SSL stuff is my favorite so far for my drums for sure. Awesome vid Warren as always!
Huge fan of waves plugins here! Love everything they do! Also a huge fan of SSLs emulations. Can’t wait to try this plugin. Thank you so much Warren for such incredible review and free multitracks. You super duper Rock! 😀👍
Thanks Alexey for your support!
It's cool. Great presentation Sir Warren!
Thanks ever so much!
I finally came over to the Waves camp after being a UAD taliban for years. Nothing beats the SSL in musicality and precision. Most of my favorite records are made during the early years of SSL 1978-1982.
Another top video, I’ve been using this for a few weeks now and learnt more in that short time than playing around while the sun comes up.. 👍
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it
Happy New Year
Sounds great! Looks clean too!
Thanks ever so much!
Only bought the SSL4000 collection in Sept 21 so get this for free…result..thanks for the tutorial and multitracks to try. And yes I am now marvellously well..Excellent content as ever.
Lovely! Waves plugins are always tops!
sure am glad I got the Waves upgrade plan
Thanks for the review example.I will add this to my collection. I would look forward to a shootout of ssl plugins as I have the ssl product as well as the waves and am looking at the softube console and ssl emulation.
that snare wire toggle work is on fire
great video quality and lighting!
Thanks ever so much
While most people will whinge about the clip light, my OCD is screaming "LABEL YOUR BUSES!" :)
Great video nonetheless
Haha I hear you!
Hi Warren, i love waves stuff, this is on my bucket list, i can't help but hear Roxanne
..... You don't have to put on the red light..........(put on the red light) but you can if it sounds good right! thanks for doing this review, have a great day, all the best.
Listen to this on my midrange cellphone man it pops
Appreciate your generosity and enthusiasm, Warren.
Thanks ever so much
I love when the red lights lit up...;-)... Its all about the distortions...that means compression etc...
As always, another great review I discovered when searching to see if you had a review of the new Kali in-8 V2's, always like to get your take on new products I haven't heard or found yet, and was news to me that waves had updated this, goes to show it's worth searching your site now & again.
Would also love to see a Hardware Based SSL shootout with your views on Softubes Console 1 version against SSL's new Native Channel 2 & UC-1 Remote. I have Console 1 & Used the Native Channel V1 plugins, but would like to know your take on these against your SSL 4000 and especially the new SSL Channel Version 2 - am thinking of getting one anyways - but it's always good to hear other peoples views, especially from highly educated ears like yourself. Love the tips, keep em coming.
Thank you again for nice review. I'll check it out against our sl9000j
Fantastic!!
This video was great, man! Thank you
Thanks ever so much!
Thanks ever so much!
hats off to the lead guitarist. I find its constant driving melodies more important to this song than even the vocals.
Thanks for sharing
And thanks for the free multitracks. So much fun.
You’re very welcome
@@Producelikeapro oh and I see the SSL EV2 only supports 96khz sample rate. An interesting fact to kee in mind.
Very cool track & multi-tracks, btw! (You also incited my GAS, and I bought an EV2.)
Fantastic! Glad to be able to help!
I love how you say more and more times that the red light (clipping) isn't bad if it doesn't sounding bad. You can clip everywhere, clipping it's a sort of a saturation. If you try to hit the "mic" button very hard, you will hear it's distorting as hell without clipping. IT'S JUST HOW IT SOUNDS. A few days ago, I found myself clipping a kick to get his punchiness out, and it worked perfectly fine. Leave some dbs on the master and you're fine. Love from Italy✌🏻
It's very interesting watching Waren mix. I do almost everything differently and by seing this, I don't like what I end up with. Deffinitely have to change something. Anyway, the second mix is more like my taste. More mellow, smooth and warmer than the first one which is more HiFiish... brighter and more polished. I wouldn't mind if my stuff sounded like the second mix at all. Great stuff!
Great demo/tutorial Warren. My favourite(I’m English!) vocal plugin is Abbey Road Plates…I particularly like Plate D on female vocals for some reason .
Haha yes! Favourite indeed! Thanks for sharing
Gotit yesterdaymixed an orchestra track for a label in Paris with it today .. . Oh my god it's stunning ! on string's holy hell amazing clarity of the Eq shaping Could never afford a real one haha ha
Please can you make a video comparing all the SSL plugins once for all , in the same time with your console ? 😀 it will be so Nice !!
Definitely! The Ultimate SSL shoot out!
@@Producelikeapro Thank you so much ! You are such a nice mentor !
@@juancarlosguagnoni4062 you're very kind!
Thanks again Warren!! Very nice new plugin, curious how it its against the older SSL I have. I actually use a lot of the waves plugins that are out there. Like SSL, CLA, Abbeyroad, Renaissance, but also fabfilter ProQ3, and Ozone. love you're work!
Thanks Lex for sharing!
thanks a lot for the multitrack woow great job
Hi Klamt! Glad you like it!
Thank you Warren❣️
Thanks Audrey!
just purchased the plugin. At 39$ it's not a hard decision to make. Works great, I tried it on the tracks you provided. next step is trying stout on one of my songs
a shoot out eh? i'd love to see all the SSL emulations you can find shot out against your actual SSL with the same settings on every channel in the mix. have inserts in PT and plugins and go through them all :). this waves is a HUGE improvement over the old one (i never liked it much tbh). I would love to see it go against UAD, plugin alliance, the SSL native plugin, and your actual SSL.
That's exactly what I'm thinking!
@@Producelikeapro hell yeah! happy to help out IRL with this routing, patches, etc. You could get my friend katie in for another song too 😂. in any case, looking forward to some real comparison videos.
First of all, I am enjoying the beautiful music.
Thanks ever so much
Another home run Warren!
Thanks ever so much
The Waves plugins are pretty awesome and not very taxing on the system. When UAD came out I got the SSL channel strip and the Neve channel strip. They were good but used alot of DSP and were limiting in that sense. Sounded great but maybe UAD do not dominate the market anymore and Waves being able to run native and DSP makes them a very serious plugin maker thats more than affordable. Great video, cheers
Thanks ever so much for sharing Joey!
iPad is on another level has been for yrs
I use the Brainworx 4000E AAX here myself. Love to see a head to head Warren!
Yes! One day!
FANTASTIC!!!
Marvellous
Love ur content respect your honesty.
I appreciate that!
Love the Waves SSL plugins, thanks Warren. Would you typically include the Toms, Overheads and Rooms when you double the Drum Bus, squash the compression and blend in, or normally only apply that to Kick and Snare? Thanks
There's no one way I do it! Some times I will do the hole drum mix, other times I will separate out the kick and snare, particularly if it's a very heavy track count.
Thanks sharing Sir and the multi tracks 👌🏾, is that normal for you to not click the Split knob to put the filters before EQ and Comp?
Hi Warren! Great video! I was wondering if we can use all this free multitracks as our portfolio mixes? I'm thinking not only of these multitracks but also your other videos when you or Marc gave us multitracks to mix. It'd be wonderful if we can use them that way. Thanks!
I resisted but relented due to your review and my lack of willpower. I owned the previous version so it was only $39. Thank you Warren for this review!
You’re very welcome
Hi Warren, thanks for this great tutorial on SSL. What SSL emulation would you recommend since there are so many out there? Either for beginners or not. Thanks, man!
Warren, how do you mix toms, because this demo lacks of toms? Thank You so much for this little mixing session, if've tried to apply all your mixing moments on each drum part and other instruments on my newly purchased SSL EV2 and I FINALLY getting into the zone, of which I was aiming to for years. I am truly thankful! Never thought I can actually mix something. You are true gift to us, newbies! Thank You Thank You Thank You. Deeply. You're the best sound engineer and tutor on RUclips. Hands down. I salute you, sir!
Thanks for your kind words! Yes, I have a ton of songs with tom tracks, it really depends on the drummer, part and of course what’s best for the song
Thank you I always wondered why the waves ssl plug clips so easily..
Thanks Warren
You’re very welcome
Im still learning my plugin alliance SSL plugins and after a few months don’t quite have the hang of the features. I often just use it for warmth and don’t do much of anything with it besides sending the signal through the circuits and adjusting the circuits. I often have the red light peaking and am never sure if it should be or not. I like the sound when it does but find myself lowering input so it doesn’t because I’m afraid I’m getting digital clipping which is never that nice. Now. When i used to have outboard gear and mixers(Only had Mackies) I used to distort channels all the time on drums for more oomph. Im new to using analogue SSL emulations so I’m just not clear what the emulation of circuits is really doing. Thanks for the detailed demo on how you use the plugin.
So far this one sounds great…. Gonna try it on a reggae track later today
Fantastic
First of all wow what a song and what a singer. I normally hate these mix comparisons because I don’t like the actual song but this is amazing. Second of all I hope this puts to bed the endless analogue v digital fights that have mirrored certain political arguments lol. Also this plugin os fantastic and thanks for being as unbiased as possible. Considering most of us don’t have SSL consoles so how on earth can we do a comparison? You on the other hand wow that was amazing thank you
Bought this today. Very easy to use and easy to get it to sound good. Would say that for $40 it's a very good buy :)
Marvellous!
Hey Warren, I was curious as to why you didn’t use the Bell Curve function on any of the instances of the plugin (unless I missed it). Even though everything is a use case scenario, when would using a bell curve on an ssl be a good idea? I was expecting the overuse of the shelf eq to muddy up the mix, but was surprised at the results!
Watching you being aggressive with the knobs actually taught me a lot. I have a bad habit of trying to not do too much, which I guess isn’t always a terrible thing. Now there’s room to experiment! Thanks for the great content!
Great review! I think the analog mix sounded better, but the plugin may be excellent in certain cases.
Bro you are on it quick....and this track is TIGHT!!!!! I'm about to cop this now... SSL too....Who song is this for real? Salute Produce Like A Pro...Peaceeeee
Haha thanks ever so much
Seems to be a habit of mine to watch your videos before I use the plugin even after I had it installed
Thanks Obed!
I have been using SSLs own plug ins which are really good,I kinda drifted away from waves ,when UAD 2 came out and Acustica Audio started dropping thier crazy good plugs, however this looks worth ago ,like you mentioned it's the way you use the SSL that gives you the sound I also boost highs into the comp always have ,I.think.its a must with rock drums even some rock guitars
